Replacements
Here is a list of possible replacements for Karl Dorrell from an earlier post. Add your ideas and comments below, we will revise as well. Also, we endorse what we call The Caretaker Plan for an interim coach, which you can read about here.
Editors Note: Ryebreadraz of BruinsNation started a good list of potential new head coaches. We cross-post it below:
With the (hopefully) impeding firing of Karl Dorrell, now is a good time to take a peak at possible replacements. I only considered those with head coaching experience or assistants who have been a coordinator for at least 5 seasons. Some of these are bigger names, however we all know UCLA does not like to pay their coaches so there are a couple smaller names that we should take a look at if we aren't willing to pay.
HC- Bronco Mendenhall…BYU (40 years old)
In his first season as BYU head coach, Mendenhall took a program that had not enjoyed a winning season since 2001 and put together a 6-5 regular-season record, a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference standings and earned a trip to a bowl game for the first time in three seasons. Building on the success of his first-ever season as a head coach, Mendenhall and the Cougars posted a 10-2 record in 2006, winning the outright Mountain West Conference Championship with a perfect 8-0 record. An Oregon St. graduate, he returned to OSU in 1989 as a graduate assistant. He also spent 2 years at N. Arizona as secondary coach where they had the top ranked defense in the Big Sky. He was then promoted to DC where his defense as again the best in the conference. He spent time at 3 different schools before landing a gig in New Mexico as a defensive coordinator where he was key in the development of Brian Urlacher and had one of the conferences best defenses. His biggest fault as a potential UCLA head coach is the lack of ties he has to Southern California. He has never coached in the state and has very few players on his roster from the Golden State.
HC- Gary Patterson….TCU (47)
A graduate of Kansas St., Patterson has turned TCU into a nation program since taking over in 2001. Patterson has put together four 10 win seasons in the last five years when no other coach in TCU history has more than two 10-win campaigns. His TCU program is one of only five teams in the nation to record three 11 win seasons in the last four years. An 11-2 record in 2006 included wins over Big 12 opponents Baylor and Texas Tech as well as a 37-7 victory over Northern Illinois in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. The Frogs' defense ranked second nationally in run defense (60.8 yards per game) and total defense (234.9 yards per game) while placing third in scoring defense (12.3 points per game). The defensive unit, with nine starters returning in 2007, posted its best numbers in all three categories during Patterson's time as head coach. After serving as a graduate assistant at Kansas St., he had assistant jobs at a number of programs before earning himself a defensive coordinator position at New Mexico in 1996. He turned down an offer from Minnesota that would have paid him $2 million per season so luring him to Westwood could be tough.
HC- Chris Peterson…Boise St. (42)
The Boise St. head coach is one of the hottest young coaches in the nation following the Broncos undefeated season in 2006 and win in the Fiesta Bowl. This was in his 1st year as a head coach after having been offensive coordinator for the 5 prior years at Boise St. Petersen began his coaching career in 1987 as the head freshman coach at UC-Davis. In 1989 he became the receivers coach for the varsity, departing in 1992 to become the quarterbacks coach at Pitt. He moved back west in 1993 to coach the quarterbacks at Portland State, and moved over to the University of Oregon in 1995 as the receivers coach. Peterson is the most sensible candidate for the Bruins as he has proven himself and has connections to the west, however he is likely to be tough to lure to Westwood, especially with the salary UCLA usually pays.
DC- John Tenuta…Georgia Tech (49)
The current Georgia Tech defensive coordinator is one of the premier DC's in the nation. GT's defenses have been in the top 25 in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense and pass efficiency defense in both of the past 2 seasons. Tetuna also spent a season as DC at North Carolina where his Tar Heel defense was statistically, the best in the ACC. He does not have any apparent strong connections to assist in recruiting however.
DC- Will Muschamp…Auburn (36)
This current Auburn defensive coordinator is a former Georgia safety. He was the DC at LSU in '03 where his defense led the nation in scoring defense. He also spent a year with Nick Saban as the defensive assistant head coach with the Miami Dolphins. He has also served as linebackers coach at LSU and his Auburn defense is currently one of the best in the nation. His connections in the south should bring in recruits from the fertile south.
HC- Ron Prince…Kansas St. (37)
Prince succeeded Bill Snyder at Kansas State following the 2005 season. When he coached his first season at Kansas State he was the third youngest head coach in the nation. In 2006, Prince led Kansas State to its first winning record since 2003 with a 7-6 mark, as well as a berth in the inaugural Texas Bowl. The hallmark win of the regular season was a 45-42 upset of then-fourth-ranked University of Texas on November 11, 2006. Before going to Kansas St., Prince spent 3 years as the offensive coordinator at Virginia. Prince has no connections to the west coast, in fact Kansas St. is the farthest west he has coached.
DC- Mike Trgovac…Carolina Panthers (40)
He is the current defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. Born near Youngstown, Ohio, Trgovac was an All-American noseguard at the University of Michigan before starting his NFL coaching career. Since taking over as defensive coordinator in 2002, the Panthers rank fifth in total yards allowed, trailing only Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Denver. They are also sixth in first downs allowed and rushing yards allowed per attempt, ninth in rushing yards allowed per game and 10th in third down efficiency. Trgovac coached at Michigan following graduation and also coached at Ball St., Navy, Notre Dame and Colorado St. In the NFL, he has also been an assistant in Philadelphia, Green Bay and Washington.
HC- Jim Leavitt…USF (50)
The current head coach at South Florida, he took over the program in 1997 when the program was in 1-AA. He has taken the program up to 1-A and Conference USA to its current place in the Big East. Leavitt has led the program to an impressive 61-39 record. A mega-success in the first four years at the I-AA level (24 straight weeks in national polls)., he has the Bulls now in contention for the Big East title and has garnered national respect after a bowl win in 2006 and a crucial win over Auburn in 2007. The Missouri graduate has been heavily pursued by a number of teams, including Kansas St. and Alabama, who went as far to send him a contract for him to sign, however he has remained committed to the Tampa team he has built.
HC- Greg Brandon…Bowling Green (50)
Brandon was hired as the head coach at Bowling Green in 2002 following the departure or Urban Meyer and has kept up the level of success established within the program. He led Bowling Green to back to back bowl wins in his 1st two seasons for only the 2nd time in school history. In his first season the Falcons finished #23 in the country and finished ranked in his 2nd season, the first time in school history they finished consecutive seasons ranked. Brandon was hired after more than than 22 years of coaching experience at the

TD @ 8:14 am:
Rick Neuheisel needs to be the next UCLA hire. He’s always said this is his dream job, he is a former UCLA QB, and he deserves a second chance at head coaching. Honestly, how many quality, high-profile coaches out there would call UCLA their “dream job?” It would be a perfect fit. A quality head coach who actually wants to be at UCLA rather than using the gig as a stepping-stone to a higher profile position. Not that Neuheisel would turn down a head coaching opportunity in the NFL, but I don’t think he would leave UCLA to become the next head coach at say, LSU, for example. Hire Neuheisel for 2008!
frank @ 9:50 am:
Charlie Weis should be available by the end of this season.
John W. Reagan @ 10:03 am:
Terry Bowden would be a great fit at UCLA. He wants to get back into coaching. We need to get on that train before someone else does.
Hector Miranda @ 12:35 pm:
We need to consider what Ohio State University did in hiring Jim Tressel from Youngstown State. His four national championships at Youngstown State proved he could coach whether or not it was a 1-AA school.
I submit to you that we should hire Jerry Moore the head coach of Appalachian State, a two time national champion at that school and the architect of Michigan’s historic upset.
He is clearly a bit older than Tressel but Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno have shown that age should not matter in coaching selection.
TD @ 2:25 pm:
@ Hector
That’s not a bad idea in general, but Appalachian State is a far cry from Los Angeles. Jim Tressel knew Ohio and the Upper Midwest. Bringing Jerry Moore out here might not translate that well, but then again it might be a great fit. I still think Neuheisel deserves a shot at his alma mater.

mikey @ 3:00 pm:
MMMM!! Nix on Neuheisel. Too many skeletons in the closet and some ethics problems. Last thing we need is a PAC-10 sanction, suspension, probation…
yabooo @ 6:21 pm:
Mike Price: A proven winner in the PAC 10 at washington state who fell from grace due to a minor indiscretion. He consistently upset his main rival, Washington, and took a small school to the Rose bowl twice. His programs were always ethical and clean as opposed to every program that Neuheisal has touched. Granted, he’s a bit older but I think this is some one that UCLA could afford and some one who knows football.

oooyeah @ 3:18 am:
Keep this name in mind - Montana head coach Bobby Hauck. Not a big name by any means but has a 43-13 record in 4 seasons at Montana, was a graduate assistant at UCLA during the Donahue years, followed Neuheisel to CU to become an assistant and recruiting coordinator at Colorado and Washington during Neuheisel’s tenures there. Montana is the #2 team in the (formely) 1AA polls behind App State, and is the 4 time defending Big Sky champions. If the bigger name coach isn’t pursued by DG I think Hauck could be a logical choice.
David Garber @ 1:31 pm:
Personally, I only trust coaches and coordinators that have been successful for over 5 years. I’m staying away from Chris Peterson because he could flop after his first season like Larry Coker did. Bronco Mendenhall has only had one ten win season as of date. Mike Price hasn’t been doing so well at UTEP recently. Plus, offensive coordinators have a greater tendency to do better as head coaches than defensive coordinators.
So, given all of that, here is my list. These are the best coaches I can think of right now that are under 50 who aren’t already at big name schools. The only issue with some of them might be money. But if UCLA wants to do really well in football on a consistent basis like USC does, then Dan Guerrero might need to make some sacrifices.
I know that some of these guys may not have big connections with high schools in California, but UCLA can just get a good assistant coach who has those connections.
OC Bob Bratowski, Cincinnati Bengals (45)
- 1975-77: Played wide receiver at Washington State. 1978-80: Assistant coach (AC), Missouri. 1981-85: Offensive coordinator, Weber State. 1986: Offensive coordinator, Wyoming. 1987-88: Offensive coordinator, Washington State. 1989-91: Offensive coordinator, Miami (Fla.). 1992-94: AC, Seattle Seahawks. 1995-98: Offensive coordinator, Seattle Seahawks. 1999-2000: AC, Pittsburgh Steelers. 2001-present: Offensive coordinator, Bengals
OC Marty Mornhinweg, Philidelphia Eagles (45)
- coached at the college level from (1985-1994), Packers Offensive Assistant (1995-96), 49ers OC from (1997-2000), Lions HC (2001-02), Eagles AC (2003-06), Eagles OC (2006-07)
- He is the only Offensive Coordinator that Andy Reid has ever yielded play calling responsibilities to.
HC Gary Patterson, TCU (40)
- The best and most consistent mid-major head coach in all of division 1-A.
DC Bud Foster, Va. Tech (48)
- Hokie DC for the last 12 years
OC Paul Chryst, Wisconsin (41)
- Chargers TE coach (1999-01), Oregon State OC/QB coach (2003-04), Wisconsin OC (2005-06)
DC Brent Venables, Oklahoma (37)
- Normally, I wouldn’t pick a DC, but this guy has been the associate Head Coach for the Sooners since 2004, as well as being the co-DC for them since 1999.
OC Al Borges, Auburn (52) or OC Rick Neuheisel, Ravens (46)
- The two best candidates with backgrounds at UCLA. Borges was their OC from (1996-00), and Neuheisel was their Rose Bowl MVP in 1984. Unlike some of the people I’ve mentioned above, their not the kind of coaches who win at least 3/4ths of their games each year.
Here’s a list of some other guys who might be good for the job, although they might be either too old, or they don’t have the same track record as the guys I already mentioned.
DC Tyrone Nix, So. Carolina
OC Tom Moore, Colts
OC Gil Haskell, Seahawks
OC Rick Dennison, Broncos
LB coach Brian VanGorder, Falcons
OC Kevin Wilson, Oklahoma
HC Jerry Moore, App. State
HC Don Brown, Massachusetts
HC Bobby Hauck, Montana
DC Bo Pelini, LSU

Jim Mora Jr - wants to be a college coach. NFL exp Great choice.
Norm Chow - We’ll have the best offense in cfootball.
johnny5 @ 9:28 pm:
Steve Mariucci - Mooch returns!
John Gruden - Wooo!!
September 24, 2007
Hector Miranda @ 11:15 am:
Garber makes a great suggestion in mentioning Al Borges. UCLA had a great offense when he was here, and we saw what he did at Auburn. Teamed up with a good DC (Nick Long anybody?) and we could have a really solid team on both sides of the ball.
Only question mark here is a lach of HC experience.
Here’s another long shot for you guys to consider:
Bob Ladouceur head coach of Concard De La Salle. He began coaching the De La Salle High School in Concord, California in 1979, when he was twenty-five years old. He took over a team that had never enjoyed a winning season since the school’s founding in 1965 and turned it into a perennial winner. From 1992 to 2003, he guided the team to 12-consecutive undefeated seasons, setting a national winning streak record for high school football of 151 consecutive wins – a record matched in amateur sports only by the 159 game winning streak of Passaic High School in men’s basketball. Ladouceur was enshrined to the National High School Hall of Fame in 2001 and has been named National Coach of the Year several times.
BruinOC @ 12:50 pm:
Why was I called a ‘Dorrellista’ (a direct link to my quote)? Then I was referred to as a ‘cultist’?
I’m only offering an opinion. So, if UCLA beat Oregon St. and Notre Dame, and are indeed 5-1…I’m just lost as a Bruin Fan on why there is so much hatred/venom?
If he beats a bad team, he gets no respect, that teams sucked. But when he loses, my goodness,…
I am not a apologist for KD.
Do I think he is capapble of winning a National Championship….no.
Do I think KD is the ‘Coach of the Future’ for UCLA…no.
But, to insult every quote, every statement he makes, and to blame every penalty on him (not the players) seems kind of harsh (and rather childish).
I agree with a lot of the statements in regards to his record, and what appears to be his inability to show any emotion (or produce emotion from his players).
These are the issues that we should be discussing, not calling KD (and anyone associated with him) silly names to get a point across.
If DG were to come to DumpDorrell.com, I assume he would leave immediately since the ‘writing/blogging’ are more ‘personal’ than ‘work related’.
Removing the ‘Head Football Coach’ from the University of California, Los Angeles is a serious issue, and should be treated as such. And to be taken seriously (this website - dumpdorrell.com), the ‘dialogue’ should be more on what he (KD) hasn’t done (as the HC) and what we all expect from the ‘Head Coach’ at UCLA.
I’m on the ’same side’ as everyone on this board - I just don’t have the hatred (as it appears to me - a new reader to the blog) as some have shown.
Again - just giving ‘my 2 cents’…
Go Bruins!!!
DumpDorrell @ 3:01 pm:
BruinOC .. you are out of line, and you’re confusing different comments. We called you a Dorrellista because you said a win over the second worst team in the conference takes Dorrell off the hot seat. We didnt call you a Dorrelista for any other reason. The rest of your comment is pure BS. Dorrell saying that he “answered the bell” is worthy of ridicule(!) considering that when we lose he lays blame everywhere else but on himself. Consider this a warning, dont accuse of things we did not say or you will be blackballed. It’s tough enough to take time out of our day to keep this site going but to have to babysit and police our site for bs comments like this is over the top.
JM Bruin @ 3:02 pm:
Bruin OC, to put it mildly I don’t think you understand the severity of the situation. I could sit here and take cracks at you all day, for that, but I won’t, cause you’re not the problem… Karl Duh-rell is the problem!!
Why do we hate him?… let me give you 4 major reasons!
Wyoming
Fresno St.
Arizona
Utah
Duh-rell or whatever you’d like to call him is the HC and is solely responsible for embarrassing us in each of those contests. Let me EMPHASIZE EMBARRASING US! He changes co-ordinators each year, and expects them to run this West Coast offense which he doesn’t recruit properly for… see Ben Olson and the receiving corps.
He does just enough to get by… see Steve THE GREASY ONE Lavin! That’s why basketball is so much better off now, that can’t be disputed! He needed to go for us to go FORWARD!!
Karl Duh-rell needs to go for us to go FORWARD! No one believes that “Karlton” can win a PAC-10 title, much less take us to a BCS BOWL. THEN WHAT THE HELL IS HE DOING HERE? You see it’s people like you who casually watch, and don’t understand, that keep people like me infuriated because we’re stuck in mediocrity, and you don’t want anything done. You ask Why do you guys hate him? BECASUE HE’S RUINING UCLA FOOTBALL! That’s why I hate him, because we’re a joke on the national stage, and HE KNOWS IT. And I say if he was a real Bruin he’d realize what damage he’s doing to MY SCHOOL AND STEP DOWN AND APPOLOGIZE TO WESTWOOD, THE REST OF THE CITY OF LA, AND TO ME AND THE REST OF THE ALUMI FOR THE HORRIBLE JOB HE’S DONE AND THE DAMAGE THAT THE NEXT COACH WILL HAVE TO UNDO!
That’s what it means to be a FAN, it’s my school, and it’s like watching my little brothers out there getting their asses kicked and “The Statue of NO-LIBERTY” just stands there like a deer in headlights and lets them take it. And I know that every Win he gets at this poing just holds off the inevitable. It just keeps us locked up just like basketball was, just like baseball was, and I hate it, cause he’s take the joy out of one of my favorite things, and I HATE HIM FOR IT!
Lastly what do I expect out of a head coach…. I expect to compete for a PAC-10 title every year! I expect to go to a BCS bowl every couple of years. I expect a team to be well prepared every time they take the field. We have the campus and location to bring in the right athletes for that, and that will never be a problem. But the college game requires coaching, you don’t need all 5 star recruits, you do need 4’s and 3’s, and with proper coaching and preparation excellence will follow. Excellence is a word that will never be associated with Coach Duh-rell!
this post has been edited. please refrain from using Dorrell’s name in association with a movie character that in our view is derogatory in its usage
Steve @ 4:07 pm:
This guy should have been dumped a long time ago. Hot seat now? Too little too late. There should be NO seat but a toilet seat. His voice and lips are so grating on me I can’t stand to listen and watch him. He is a whining loser. Ruined recruiting. I knew 3 yrs ago it would end like this. This should not be on the job training. Please. He is making close to 1 mill per!!!
BruinOC @ 7:34 pm:
All - (DumpDorrell) It is not my intention to be ‘blackballed’ (especially after only a few comments), so I will refrain from making any opinions that may cause this website (or webmaster) any problems/issues.
Thank you for the comments JM Bruin, you’d be surprised on how much we have in common, theoretically speaking (without the sarcasm) - no offense.
I am a fan (not casual) - and I came here to see what was being said, after the Utah game.
As the website stated after the Utah game - I believe more UCLA fans are coming here to interact (and to leave comments).
I’m not happy with KD’s coaching as well, but I honestly believe - judging how DG has handled KD in the past - the KD is ‘currently’ off the Hot Seat due to the victory Saturday Night (and with over 70,000 in attendence again).
I also so a more ‘animated’ KD - more than what I’ve seen in the past 5 years, but I assume he knows what a 7-6 seaon would mean.
So, although the way I state my case may be different then others, I believe we are all stating that DG needs to make a change.
I did not go to the game - in protest to the current program.
Anyhow, I’m still hoping for a 10-2/9-3 Season…
Go Bruins!!!!
DumpDorrell @ 9:23 pm:
Hector … creative, but Ladouceur is a long shot. Even the worlds best high school coach should have to prove himself at a lower rung program before being offered a HC job at UCLA. Rice hired famed Dallas high school coach Todd Graham after he spent a few seasons as an assistant at Tulsa under Steve Kragthorpe and W. Virginia under Rich Rodriguez. Graham quickly put up 1 good season for Rice then bailed on them for the open Tulsa position vacated by Kragthorpe when he bolted for the open Louisville position. So your idea is not far fetched, but Ladouceur would have to make a few stops before he should be able to get a HC job at UCLA. Borges most likely wont get more than an interview, if that, because he also hasn’t headed a program as you said, which is odd that he hasn’t done despite all his success. Plus he runs the WCO, which we may move away from.

HE HATE ME @ 3:27 am:
I just saw Marty Mornhinweg on a list of possible coaches…I’d have to say no…if only for the reason that he elected to kick after winning the coin toss in overtime, this was obviously in the NFL…and of course his team, the Lions, lost.
BobTheBruin @ 10:52 am:
Any chance on getting June Jones away from Hawaii?
Hector Miranda @ 11:55 am:
I have to agree with Hate Me: Marty Mornhinweg is a really bad idea.
Having thought it over and over, If Terry Bowden is speaking as positively as he is about UCLA, I think he really is our best bet at getting a good quality coach. Steve Mariuci is second on my wish list.
Now, if only we could get UCLA to open some purse strings to get us a good coach.
John Bruin @ 3:45 pm:
JM Bruin & Bruin OC, I feel your pain.
Still, we should be careful not to insult people who agree with most of our opinions just because they differ in some particular detail.
OTOH: Do not take personally the anger and venom in these comments. I used to think that people who rant so on these sites had problems, but I understand it now: people need a forum to vent - and Dorrell has us a lot of fans a lot of reasons to be angry.
We have a coach who continues to hang onto his job despite not performing and it is infuriating to UCLA fans. We can cite statistics, discuss UCLA’s commitment to excellence and post other things - but ultimately it comes down to this: Five years ago he promised to make UCLA a contender in Div 1A football and he has not kept his promise and shows no indication of ever keeping his promise. Yet, there is no serious effort to find a coach who can keep Dorrell’s promise.
Some fans get angry with people if they give the appearance of supporting Dorrell - since they seem to be standing in the way of fixing the situation. I think we need to stop attacking those people - for one thing insults won’t change their minds. For another thing, if someone is starting to support replacing Dorrell and they see so much anger, and offensive material it might discredit the whole DumpDorrell movement.
Someone posted a comment that DG, if he looked at this site, would not take it seriously. True DG is not going to be swayed by emotional rants filled full of insults and derogatory comments. However, even if every post on DD were written carefully and respectfully, DG is not going to base such a crucial decision on a blog! He gets bags of letters from fans offering advice. He hears from Alumni with clout and connections. He has University administrators making their thoughts known.
I say vent your anger and frustration but just don’t take it out on a fellow Bruin.
BruinOC @ 3:53 pm:
Terry Bowden seems like a good fit - Southern Coach - Good Ole’ Boy, all the things that could be needed in Westwood. But, like Erickson, his was successful with the recruits from the coach he replaced.
Plus he left Auburn in the middle of the season (I believe in 99′) while he was on the ‘Hot Seat’.
So, if you want to give Dorrell some form of credit - he has stood up against the army of those against him, and not caved and quit.
DumpDorrell @ 4:05 pm:
Bob
His name comes up often … we will include all names on the Replacement list once we start our new campaign.
Just for everyones information: DD will not take a position on any potential new head coach until our first goal is obtained. We will put everyone’s ideas out there as a sort of clearinghouse or forum on the subject so that everyone can make their case and discuss names and issues. When we know our goal is or will be achieved - Dorrell is gone - then we will join the fray and try to achieve consensus … at least here on DD. Using whatever clout we have achieved to that point we will pass on that consensus to the community, including Dan Guerrero, Morgan Center, Murphy Hall, and the media.
DumpDorrell @ 4:12 pm:
BruinOC - Terry has made it clear now numerous times that he is interested in coaching again including in the Pac-10 (he said it yesterday on AM 570 we are told). He also apparently said that UCLA is one of the 5 or 6 schools that is underachieving and not reaching its true potential. Maybe not the best way to stump for the job but that is as close to saying you want the job without actually saying it.
