ESPN Radio Interview + Updated Info

Our editor just finished his interview with Steve Mason & John Ireland of The Big Show on ESPN Radio 710. There may be a podcast available of the interview later here.  Mason & Ireland seemed to be pushing The Mason Plan again, which if you didn't know involves firing Karl Dorrell now and making DC DeWayne Walker interim head coach.  Mason then refined his plan to make it retroactive to the Utah game, meaning Karl Dorrell would have to return his salary he received from that point on. Good stuff.  They also liked the We're #4 slogan and campaign.  Listen to the interview if you get the chance.

We are tying to get the shop up on our site to get you t-shirts and "We're #4!" foam finger mitts (example right). It's not as easy as it may seem.  We work full-time and started this site on a lark (now we run it because we feel a responsibility to YOU the bruin faithful), but read more

DumpDorrell’s ESPN Radio Interview Followup: Response To The Mason Plan

One of our editors just got off the air with Mason & Ireland on ESPN radio 710.  It was a good show … John Ireland "ate crow" as a result of our last appearance on his show after the SuC game when Mason and Ireland said we should shut down our site. Now Ireland admits that he is firmly on the DumpDorrell side.  Mason put to our editor an interesting question, one he dubbed The Mason Plan. The Mason Plan is this: Dan Guerrero fires Karl Dorrell today(!) and makes DC DeWayne Walker interim head coach, as a sort of trial head coaching gig.

Mason asked what our editor thought of the plan. Our editor said that was a bad idea. Mason went nuts, saying several times that he thought it was crazy that DumpDorrell.com does NOT want to fire Karl Dorrell today (he then said he was going to start a site called DumpDumpDorrell.com - hilarious).  The reason Mason wants to fire Dorrell today is because it avoids the risk of ending the season with the nuclear record of 9-4 (where DG can't fire Dorrell and the NFL doesn't hire Dorrell away). Our response deserves explanation, which we couldn't really give in the interview.

Here is DD's full response to the Mason Plan:  read more

CBS’ Dodd: Dorrell Might Never Win Pac-10 Championship

Chris Dodd of CBS Sportsline is doing his season preview of the conferences. He has UCLA finishing 3rd in the the Pac-10 behind SuC and Cal. He wonders as we have that if Dorrell can’t win the conference championship this year if he ever will. Dodd also points out as some in the MSM are doing (Plaschke) that he still doesn’t know what Dorrell is all about - even now in his 5th year. Dodd:

3. UCLA: Still trying to figure out Karl Dorrell. Bruins held USC to nine, then gave up 44 to Florida State in the bowl game. If Dorrell doesn’t enter November with a chance to win the league with this crew (20 starters) he might never do it.

Oddly, Dodd has ranked our schedule tied for the 7th toughest in the nation. Check out our summary of Pre-season Rankings for more.

The Education Of Karl Dorrell

Much of the talk in the aftermath of the epic win over Southern Cal with regard to Karl Dorrell has been on the subject of Karl Dorrell growing into his job.  It's a new twist in the debate on his performance.  Only now, after his first big win, are reporters willing to state on the record their doubts about his abilities prior to the game.  J.A. Adande is a prime example, stating earlier this week that he thought after the Notre Dame fiasco that Karl Dorrell "didn't have the makeup of a champion." Then he says, "but maybe we have to wait a bit longer for the picture to develop." That is the crux of the new argument from the Dorrell supporters. The "yeah we thought he wasn't any good but now that he won this game we need to give him time" argument. Well, no, read more

Update On Mariucci Job Contact: Reporter On AM 710

Scott Wolf, the Southern Cal beat reporter for The Daily News, was on AM 710 with Mason & Ireland just before 5 pm explaining the bombshell news he disclosed on his blog that UCLA was talking to Steve Mariucci about Dorrell’s job PRIOR to the SC game. Scott came on suprised by the brouhaha he set off, and certainly by how ticked off the boys at Morgan Center are making themselves out to be.

The important question about his source came up right away. Who was his source? It was read more

Post ESPN Radio Interview: It Was A Laugh

If you heard the interview on AM 710 with Mason & Ireland with one of our editors you heard a good laugh. Let’s just clear some things up though.

  1. We do not do this for a living. No one can. It’s odd that they think that. We have careers, advanced degrees. We started this on a lark for fun, and people came to depend on us to help get the word out.
  2. We do not like wasting our time ‘giving some guy grief.’ If KD gets grief from this site he shouldn’t be head coach. This is just a fan site. More than anything we want to shut down this site. As we have said before, it’s a waste of our time. But too many Bruins want Dorrell gone and want us to continue, so we are not shutting it down.
  3. Karl Dorrell won 1 big game guys, lets not lose our heads. The team is 7-5.

Other than that, Mason & Ireland clearly got a laugh over our prediction that read more

Monday Morning Hangover: DieNasty

Editors note: one of our editors will be on live today on The Big Show with Mason & Ireland on ESPN radio AM 710 at 4:20pm for a 5 minute interview. Yeah, we expect them and some of their callers to take some shots at us.

Damn it’s good in Bruin Nation! We are still on the phone laughing it up with fellow Bruins across the country, hungover from the pure joy of beating the hated. We will remember this for a long time. This story will be etched in our collective memory. Where were you, is what we will be asking in 10 years.

The significance of ending the streak at 7, of keeping our record of domination over the Trojans in supposedly their game, and of taking away their shot at a championship, is still being felt. The Trojans themselves won’t know how much until years later, and some therapy. This may make read more
