Dorrell's final days are being written up by more sports columnists and dare we say even the guy who has the biggest man-crush on Dorrell, Trev Alberts. Let's start with Daily Breeze writer Mike Waldner (HT to Nestor at BruinsNation):
Coach (Dorrell) has had ample time to demonstrate his strengths and weaknesses. Not even a win Saturday will save him from a pink slip.
You should have a read of Waldner's entire piece. read more
While the local press are in full Save Dorrell campaign mode, the national press continues to state the obvious, that Dorrell is on the hottest seat in the nation. USA Today published an entire article on the subject:
If UCLA's Karl Dorrell isn't on the hottest seat in the college football coaching world this week, he's at least standing near it.
We can't think of read more
There are more and more discussions out there in the press about replacements for Karl Dorrell, even if our beat press (*cough* Brian Dohn *cough*) chooses to ignore the talk. Tom Deinhart of Sporting News leads his column today with a discussion of a few more candidates that he has heard bandied about. You might remember earlier in the week, Deinhart talked about BYU's Bronco Mendenhall and Boise State's Chis Peterson, and thew in Texas Tech's Mike Leach for fun. Today, Deinhart talks about all the replacements we have been talking about for some time: read more
We will get to Wazzu probably tomorrow. There are still some residual Cal notes so lets just get right to it: read more
Matt Hayes of Sporting News, one of Dorrell's staunchest, if not oddest, supporters, may have finally ended his man-love relationship with Dorrell. Prior to the start of this season Hayes had Dorrell's team listed as his "sleeper pick" to win the championship!! Also before this season, he named the hiring of Training Jay Norvell, the guy who had our team score all of 6 points against powerhouse Utah and their underclassman and 6 points against winless Notre Shame, the best hiring of the offseason by any college football team. Dorrell's Training Jay hire beat out the hiring of Dennis Erickson by ASU, Nick Saban by Alabama, and Butch Davis by North Carolina, just to name a few. Hayes even said prior to this season that the loss against Florida State in the Nut Bowl was "an aberration." Woops … love is blind. And if you recall, Hayes said prior to LAST season that Dorrell had UCLA becoming a threat again in college football. No joke … Matt Hayes was as drunk on the Dorrell Kool Aid as they came.
Then came Utah … then came Notre Dame … and Matt Hayes started sounding a little unsure about his guy Karl Dorrell: read more
Dorrell admits he is getting the message. First, Chris Foster of the LAT, in his piece titled "UCLA's Dorrell gets no slack in cyberspace," acknowledges that are large base of Bruin fans are done with Dorrell, especially those on the internet: read more
Two more articles on the Dorrell madness we are dealing with. First up, Ted Miller of Seattle Post Intelligencer, writing for ESPN.com, has an entire article on the reduced expectations we now have this season for our team: read more
Maybe the fault lines are starting to show, maybe the pressure is getting to be too much. Lately, Karl Dorrell has gotten bitchy with the press and others over simple things and questions. He's also exposed again his lack of hard core football knowledge. Take for instance this exchange with beat reporters when asked what makes Oregon State's defense one of the best in the conference, Chris Foster LA Times reporting:
Dorrell said that Oregon State's defense was "definitely the best we have played against to this point."
And what makes the Beavers so tough?
"They're good," Dorrell said.
In what areas?
"Well, they're good everywhere," Dorrell said. "They're good against the run. They're good against the pass. . . . They are very good."
Great in depth analysis there Karl. It would be one thing to read more
College Football News' Pete Fiutak took, or stole, a page from the Reporter's Guide To Hacking when he took, or stole, an idea we had here on DumpDorrell, The Caretaker Plan, and used it in his most recent column about UCLA football without giving us credit. Why reporters feel they need to do this, when they have the job, the salary and the audience, is beyond our comprehension. What are they thinking … that their readers will suddenly realize that they're hacks?? Here is the piece in Fiutak's latest column (highlights are his):
Allegedly, The Caretaker Plan also includes dumping me for writing this sucky column … What’s the toughest place to coach in America? Alabama? Sure, the pressure is ridiculous, but it’s like that everywhere in the SEC. Notre Dame? Sort of, but outside of a few academic issues, Charlie Weis has every advantage in the book. No, the toughest place to be a head football coach right now is at UCLA.
Nowhere else in his column does he reference The Caretaker Plan nor where he got that reference from. We at DumpDorrell came up with The Caretaker Plan … how about a little credit Pete?! Just to lock down the evidence: notice how he capitalizes The Caretaker Plan, as we did being that we formalized the name of our plan, AND how he uses the word "dumping" in the same sentence … all while writing about the UCLA football head coaching position. Coincidence?? Hardly. Look, this isn't a fire and brimstone, picket outside the offices of College Football News kind of deal. What he did is just plain wrong and it rubs us the wrong way. Use our ideas, just give us credit. We aren't going to police anything or send letters from lawyers … just give us credit. It's not hard to do, we do it all the time - note how in our Caretaker Plan post we give credit to Steve Mason for coming up with The Mason Plan, the forerunner to our plan.
Pete, just give people credit is all we are saying. Be a little more professional … for Pete's sake.
We're still not ready to talk Washington yet … we are still in WTF mode. Anyhow, great comments and ideas are coming into the site from new posters. Keep 'em coming. We will have a more definitive Replacement list, adding your suggestions, and as we said we will also launch a broad campaign to Dump Dorrell once the 1st Pac-10 conference loss happens. Our first offensive was to get the word out, and so many of you did … the MSM picked up on the anger right away and Dorrell and our football program is taking more hits. The good news is that the MSM is reporting in so many words how Dorrell is on the hot seat (here, here, here, here, here, here and here). Also, UCLA is now in ESPN's bottom 10, coming in at #5 worst in the country, behind powerhouse Stanford. We particularly like this quote from Charles Chiccoa of Scout: read more
