TJ Simers Column About You, The Dump Dorrell Crowd

TJ Simers pretty much devoted his column yesterday to you all, "the Dump Dorrell crowd."  Oddly, he was kind … well sort of.  First, Simers sets up the final moments of the Cal game and how it all was on the line for Dorrell and UCLA football on one single play:

Just a minute to go in Saturday's game, and it appears (DC DeWayne) Walker's career is developing quite nicely if he wants to be a head coach. And soon.

Cal is in position to essentially end the Bruins' season, the Dump Dorrell crowd swelling, the pressure about to mount on Guerrero. One minute to go and Guerrero is standing on the goal line, arms folded, judge and jury, watching Dorrell's team. The Rose Bowl is alive with noise and excitement, as good as it gets — as horrible as it might be if all goes askew in the next few seconds.

As we said, one play - one single play - ended up being the fine line between Dorrell getting hammered for another loss and Dorrellistas talking national championship again. Crazy, manic stuff.  If Guerrero read more

Monday Roundup: Dangerous Thinking

Ok, so we allowed a nice tribute to Dorrell stick for a few days near the top. We have to push it down now in favor of more realism. Today’s realism comes to us courtesy of Trev Alberts.

As you might already know, the great CSTV college football analyst Trev Alberts responded to one of our editor’s emails regarding his ridiculous praise of Karl Dorrell and the “incredible job” he is doing with our football program and his “steadying influence” in Westwood. Too funny. Here is the email we wrote Trev in response to that praise:

You should do a little more research before praising Karl Dorrell like you did in your recent notes on the Pac-10. You said Dorrell was doing an “incredible job” as UCLA football coach. Quite the opposite is true; you are factually way off base. What is ‘incredible’ about going 7-6 in his 4th season? What is ‘incredible’ about peaking at 3rd place in the conference in 4 years, and he has only managed that ‘incredible’ feat just once? You also said Dorrell was a “steadying influence” in Westwood. Not true. He lost nearly every recruit he had in his first class before they reached their last year of eligibility. He has lost all but one assistant coach during the 4 years he has been head coach, and in most coaching positions he is on his 3rd coach. He is on his 4th offensive coordinator! What is ’steadying’ about that?? - Anonymous

We also gave Alberts “the list” of Dorrell’s great accomplishments so he had all the hard core facts he needed to say “mea culpa” and save any little credibility he may have had. What does he go and do? He buries himself in deeper with this classic non-response response:

I think there are certain realities of where they are right now. That fact that they’re in USC’s backyard is certainly part of it. I don’t think it would really matter who the head coach is right now.

I’ve always understood and have been told that because of the way UCLA is set up they historically have not been willing to pay coaches top money. You add that and USC’s prominence together and then you have to fight the administration to pay top dollar for the assistants as well? If they’re not willing to pay the head coach, they probably haven’t made a commitment to the facilities either.

So you’re really fighting an uphill battle when all I’ve been trying to point out is that there are some bumps in the road. It’s interesting to me that you point out that 7-6 was no good, yet you’re upset about turnover.

It’s a dangerous proposition where we get into this turnover of coaches and head coaches. We live in a world where there are just enough universities that have long and storied traditions of circulating coaches every three or four years for not winning championship. I don’t know Karl Dorrell personally, but from watching him I like his demeanor, I like the way he interacts with the kids. UCLA is not exactly just coming off championship seasons when Dorrell was hired.

The point is we have 119 teams now and their fans expect their team to win the championship every year and if not it’s “let’s fire the coach.” Well, who are you going to hire? Paying the salaries that you’re apparently paying at UCLA, name me a list of coaches you’d rather have.

Huh? Where is it that Trev explains what “incredible” means? There is so much to chew on in Trev’s response. Nestor at BruinsNation covers it well so we won’t repeat, although we like how Trev hints that we are “dangerous.” The main thing that we have a beef with here at DD is the stupidity that we at UCLA have to accept the mediocrity that we are getting. These “experts” told us the same things about Lavin, and we know how that’s turned out. We also don’t like the ignorance the media displays when it comes to UCLA football tradition. This clown thinks we dont have any, so we shouldn’t expect to win. We have had many winning coaches and season under the same conditions that are apparently hindering Karl Dorrell’s “incredible” coaching abilities from giving us contenders.

Trev Alberts has permanently lost his credibility with the UCLA faithful.

LA Times Finally Printing UCLA Fans’ Disgust With Dorrell

It’s hard to believe, but the LA Times is printing actual criticism of Karl Dorrell. It is in letters to the Editor but hey we will give them credit for at least that. Check out some of the disgust:

The time has come to retire the word “gutty” when referring to the UCLA Bruins and Coach Karl Dorrell. Henceforth, substitute the word “gutless.”

Bombshell?!? Mariucci Contacted About UCLA’s Head Coaching Position Prior To SC Game

Scott Wolf, the Southern Cal beat reporter for the Daily News, is reporting on his blog that Steve Mariucci was contacted by UCLA about Karl Dorrell’s job prior to the big game. We of course have to question the credibility of this ‘report,’ particularly since Wolf gives no details of his source. Apparently reporters can throw out their journalistic code of ethics when they report on a blog. UCLA officials are denying the report (also from Wolf).

If USC defeated UCLA on Saturday, the Bruins already made contact with former Cal/San Francisco 49ers/Detroit Lions coach Steve Mariucci regarding the head-coaching position. But the 13-9 upset rendered such discussions irrelevant.

UPDATED: UCLA officials deny any contact was made with Mariucci.

We, of course, have to read more

“Dump The Joker, Hire Coker” & Other Things To Shake Your Head At

In not the greatest example of how to get the Bruin faithful behind you … we are hearing Karl Dorrell did not show up for the Beat ‘SC Bonfire and Rally tonight. Not sure when the last time a coach didn’t show up for the rally was but we are pretty sure it’s been a while (we could be wrong). Whatever the case, it would have shown that KD has some emotion, energy and fight by showing up. We think its pathetic that he no-showed, particularly given the ugliness of the streak and the struggles he and the team have had this season. It didn’t help any that they didn’t even light the bonfire, instead shooting up fire-ish confetti, apparently.

Dorrell Winning Awards This Year Already

How could we miss this? Dorrell won a coaching award at the end of last month. The Sporting News (Tom Deinhart) has crowned KD the coach “Desperately Seeking A Clue” after the home loss to Washington State. True that. Congratulations to coach KD.

From the obvious department: KD is not being considered for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award. He is not on the list. That means no $50,000 bonus. Tedford is on the list, and anyone who watched our game against Cal knows that our offense, with KD taking 25% of the playcalling over from Svoboda (have you noticed he has disappeared?), ‘dominated’ Cal’s #92 ranked defense. With all the “growing” and “learning” this “young and inexperienced” team did this year under KD, many supporters will be suprised that KD is not on that list.

You Get What You Pay For: The Sequel

Thanks to a DD poster we have more proof that UCLA pays our football coaches below average compensation packages, according to a study by USA Today.  The average in Div 1A program pays their coach $950,000 a year(not counting incentives). Karl Dorrell gets a combined package worth $881,000 (not counting incentives).  That is, of course, nice, but BELOW average.  We noted weeks ago a study done by Indy.com on the subject.  “You Get What You Pay For,” is the most viewed and emailed post on our site.

We have new data now.  Here is a little whopper from Karl Dorrell’s actual contract: KD gets a $500,000 bonus if he completes the 2010 season as head coach.  KD gets that amount prorated if he is terminated before 2010.  Makes you wonder if KD apologists and lackeys aren’t pushing for more time because of the extra juice. KD’s corporation gets $350,000 a year for the rights to use his name in licensing.  He is guaranteed that through 2010, in addition to his salary of $180,000, if he is fired before then.  Nice.  Why would KD EVER want to leave this job.  This is cushy.  If we go 5-7 that would pay Karl $176,000 per win. Not Bad!!

Still, the USA Today article confirms read more

LB Press Telegram: First To Openly State “Dump Dorrell”

The LB Press Telegram is the first local paper to openly question Karl Dorrell's record. It was bound to happen, but the timing is a little bold - before a home game against an average, inconsistent team that is sure to produce a win for our Bruins and a reprieve for Karl Dorrell from the pressure that has been mounting against him. Undaunted, Bob Keisser wrote a great article openly challenging Dan Guerrero on Karl Dorrell's record (also posted in full here). Quoted in the article are many of the facts of KD's abysmal record that are stated in the petition in Dump Dorrell.

It is the efforts of every loyal Bruin fan that ignited the call for the petition (thanks Emily Y.), to those who wrote the petition (ok, pat on the back) and helped clean it up (BruinsNation and DD posters), and to all those loyal Bruin fans who signed it and emailed it to their friends. We are not done yet obviously.  We need to keep up the pressure and give Dan Guerrero a loud and clear message that we do not accept the mediocrity our program has come to represent, and that we want a change.  If Dan Guerrero wants to invest in the future of UCLA and ALL its programs, including athletic, he needs to increase revenues to his department and the university. strong, exciting football program with an experienced, proven, winning head coach will bring back fans to the Rose Bowl, and revenues to Morgan Center and the university in concessions and merchandise sales, and donations and other interactions with the university.  Revenues must be declining under KD and this impacts every program at UCLA.  Karl Dorrell must be fired this yearA win today will not change that.  Sign the petition, and get the word out.

More Media Attention On Dump Dorrell Movement

Editors Note:  The petiton received 600 signatures in the first 7 days it was live (11pm Nov 1 it went live). Nice! Keep it up, get the word out.  Tshirts are available now. Get them for the OSU game.

The OC Register is the latest paper to acknowledge the Dump Dorrell movement.  Although there was no link or direct mention of the petition, columnist Steve Bisheff noted that the "Dump Dorrell campaign heating up on the internet" was causing pressure on KD and the administration.  He said "it's beginning to appear" that only a victory over Southern Cal can "save" KD's job.  Nice.  Although we think KD has lost the right to coach this great team already, we like to what we are hearing.

Bisheff may be wrong about Dan Guerrero being to blame for KD's hiring, however.  Nestor at BruinsNation has the KD hiring story and KD was not Dan Guerrero's choice, according to his investigation.  But Bisheff rightly points out the horrible gamble of deciding to hire a wide receiver's coach, a guy with zero experience, to take on the head coaching position at a marquee program when Pet Carroll already had a powerhouse across town.  It was a horrible, shortsighted decision that was bound to be a failure.  A big thanks to Bisheff for the aknowledgement.

Let us reiterate loud and clear. No one but Dan Guerrero knows what is going though his mind about KD and the football program. He has given no indication either way what he will do.  It's his program and his legacy on the line.  The Athletic Department is his and not the domain of all the Morgan Center carpet beaurocrats, holdovers from the Dalis/Donohue days.  So if you hear differently on the internet, don't believe it.

Dan Guerrero can do something few ADs in any school have ever done, build national contenders in three major college sports, Basketball, Football and Baseball at the same time.  We will soon find out if he will put the final major piece together or let it whither in years of mediocrity like Peter Dalis did. Our thoughts are clear, Dan Guerrero must act this year because it will be much much harder to fire KD later.

Gameweek Oregon State: Reality Settling In

Editors note: Tshirts are finally available here. Update: We will be sending staff to Westwood with tshirts Saturday morning and the Rose Bowl before the game so that you can have them for the OSU game. Details later. There is a limited edition of 200 tshirts first run so those who purchase them will get theirs first, obviously. If you want to ensure you get one, then purchase one online and then contact us to let us know you’d rather pick one up if we do this. For those who have already purchased tshirts check your email for details. The Dump Dorrell petition is closing in on 600 signatures after the first 6 days and is getting national attention. Email it to everyone you know.

The reality of another awful season and KD’s failed tenure as coach is settling in. In addition to the increased calls for firing Karl Dorrell and the national attention those efforts are getting, Morgan Center is out there profiling KD in new ways to the press. After 4 straight losses and three subpar seasons in four, they have to repair his image. Check out this bit of fluff the LA Times is putting out as a response to all the obvious criticism … “KD The Thinker!” Ridiculous. Morgan Center even made KD’s wife available and the LAT uses her like a political ad. What a bunch of tripe! Why not profile KD’s abysmal record?! For an $850,000 a year (+ $550,000 incentives) salaried public official, shouldn’t KD be judged on his achievements, not his demeanor at home?! It’s called pandering, and the LA Times is a master at it.

Let’s move onto this week’s game. Oregon State brings its surprising team to the Rose Bowl sitting in third place in the Pac-10 at 6-3. They need one more win to be bowl eligible (they have a 13 game schedule) just like Washington State did when they came to town. Coming off a stunning upset of Southern Cal and a blowout of Arizona State, OSU is riding high and touching the top 25. read more
