Gameday: 4 Hour DeWayne Walker Lovefest On WWL

Hey did you hear there's a game today?  The WWL will host a 4-hour DeWayne Walker special today and in the background you will be able to see our Bruins take on BYU in some bowl game in Las Vegas.   If anyone wanted to know how great a head football coach Walker is just tune in for a few minutes, the broadcasters will tell you.   We fully expect today's game to be a long commercial for Walker.  The MSM has been pimping Walker for head coach since mid-season, despite the humiliation at Utah.

Walker's PR machine is something to behold.  He has managed to read more

Gameday SuC: Either Way, Today We Win!!!

Today is a great day to be a Bruin football fan!  Even though this game is almost meaningless as a football game thanks to Karl Dorrell, we know that today we can't lose.  If we win the game, we win the game … and we take something precious away from the hated for a second straight year.  If we lose we finally get to start a new era in UCLA football, and hopefully one in which we finally make the commitment to excellence we have long lacked.

Dorrell can possibly be back next year .. that is the dark cloud that hangs over the game.  But beating SuC today read more

Gameday Oregon: Karl Dorrell’s Last Home Game As Coach??

Vegas is the best place to watch a football game.  There is nothing like being at a Sports book watching the full 60 minutes of a game long since over at 44-10 but everyone is still watching for that last field goal to beat the spread.  But there  is something bitter about today's gameday.   Today might be, hopefully will be, Karl Dorrell's final game at home as coach of our Bruins.  Too much to say about that and there isn't enough time.  Today we are fighting for bowl eligibility and at least a .500 record to end the season, THE season.  That about says it all.

It's horrible that 25 seniors are walking out onto the Rose Bowl field for likely their last time (we still have an outside chance of winning the Pac-10 and playing in the Rose Bow game), having lost all the promise they had when they first walked down Bruin Walk and onto Spaulding Field.  We all had great dreams for this group of seniors this year.  The entire nation expected more.  It is a sad legacy they share with Karl Dorrell, but they deserve our standing ovation for their play for our alma mater.  Even if we lose today, the Rose Bowl should be standing tall for this group of seniors.

But we expect our Bruins to win today.  There are many reasons for this, the most obvious being that Leaf is at QB for the Ducks.  He is mistake prone and more importantly he limits Oregon's daunting spread offense that DC DeWayne Walker simply does not have an answer for.  Last year Oregon jumped out to a huge 21-0 lead in the first quarter of our game up north.   Oregon cruised the rest of the way.  Oregon won't jump out to such a great lead today.  Leaf can't run the same offense the great Denis Dixon does. Bellotti has to simplify the offense, make it more pro-style, for Leaf.  And that plays right into Walker's only defensive strength.

Our Bruins will also be playing with a chip on their shoulders, being stung by all the recent talk nationally about replacements for Dorrell, in addition to it being Senior Day.  It's sad that our 25 seniors are playing for bowl eligibility and a .500 season but that is what we get with Dorrell.  In the end, it's always about our Bruins winning.  Go Bruins!!

Gameday Arizona State: The Tomorrowland Bowl

Disneyland's Tomorrowland should be sponsoring today's game at the Rose Bowl.  It has been a Disney like season for Arizona State and the team that they bring to the Rose Bowl today looks like our tomorrow.  ASU comes to town a top 10 team with an 8-1 record lead by their new big-time winning coach Dennis Erickson.  Last year ASU was in the same boat we are in: Beacon-of-mediocrity Dirk Koetter, ASU's former 6-year head coach, had the program mired in a string of average seasons, full of promise and absent execution.  Koetter's final embarrassment was a loss in last year's Monster.com bowl to Karl Dorrell.  Koetter promptly got fired, paving the way for Dennis Erickson's and ASU's rise back to the top of college football … in just 1 season!!

Meanwhile, Dan Guerrero retained Dorrell and for his good deed Karl took up Koetter's mantle … cementing our mediocrity and losing this year's Monster.com bowl to Mike Stoops (who got another year to work his odd magic thanks to Dorrell).  See what we are getting at here?  ASU is our Tomorrowland.  Dennis Erickson is our futuristic coach … a winning experienced coach.  Watch how ASU plays - simplified playbook, balance and discipline - hallmarks of experience and success.  Today we will see our future march into the Rose Bowl (if Dan Guerrero choose to make excellence our future).  Dan Guerrero should pay attention closely.  While we can and should still win, there is no escaping the irony of the situation.  WE COULD HAVE BEEN THAT TEAM!!  And read more

Gameday: Arizona

It took us a while to even think about Arizona … this game is about as meaningless as they come, even if we win. Remember all the hype about Notre Dame for an entire year .. then when the game rolled around no one even talked about it?! This is worse than that … it seems no reporter has ever been as uninspired to talk about a UCLA football game than this game. About the only interesting thing to watch for is which coach will be sweating more knowing that if they lose they will probably be out of a job. So, we leave off today with a shrug … no notes. We will give you Nestor’s notes at BruinsNation who covers the game today with as much enthusiasm as one can muster. We will be watching the game of course and willing our team to victory. Go Bruins!!!

Gameday: Washington State

Today should be an easy win folks … we play winless in the conference Washington State at Pullman.  The coaches and players are sounding confident, focused, prepared and undaunted despite our recent troubles and Wazzu's domination of our game last year at home.   Even Karl Dorrell thinks the toughest part of the game today is simply getting there (from Brian Dohn)!

"I think the toughest part of the trip is getting there, but in terms of anything else, it's the same field, great crowd."

Ok coach.  What about the recent letdowns against Utah and Notre Dame?  Is the team ready with focus and effort (from Dohn)? read more

Gameday: Cal

It’s Gameday and we are at the game. It’s packed. Though we thought we’d be changing our prediction and picking an upset today, it ends up that we can’t call it. We think it’s possible but we just don’t feel it. Could be close game, could be a blow out. As you know, Dorrell’s teams are so inconsistent this year above any other year that any team can show up. Lets kick some Kal butt!! Go Bruins!!

Gameday: Notre Dame Fighting French

It's Saturday and Notre Dame is coming to the Rose Bowl to play our Bruins.  Could there be any less hype??  Talk about anti-climactic, this game should be a headliner and it's barely recording a blip locally.  Given the highlight status last year's game in South Bend got for some over-rated over-hyped QB and his coach, and given the storied history of Notre Dame AND the Rose Bowl combined, this game should be front page news everywhere.  And yet, it won't be shown in maybe 85% of the country.

Morgan Center has been pimping this game since last Spring, forcing read more

Gameday - Special Football 101 Edition: Oregon State

Class is in session kids.  Take your seats .. quiet down.  This is Football 101.  Open your books, Football For Dummies, to page 1.   The Bruins play the Oregon State Beavers today up in Corvalis, Oregon, in what promises to be a lesson in football.  Who will be the student, who will be the teacher?  That is what will be decided today.  Karl Dorrell set himself up for a great embarrassment if we lose today.  Maybe not on the order of Utah, but a great embarrassment nevertheless.

If you've been under a rock for the past few days, Karl Dorrell snapped at a reporter earlier in the week when the reporter asked him a basic question about Oregon State's defense … "why is it so good?"  Dorrell's response is gaining legendary status. "Like you guys really know … that's football 101."  Football 101.  Class starts today

Gameday: Washington

It's gameday and we will still don't really care to take a hard look at the Huskies … damn. Every UCLA grad we know is down on the program right now.  Sure, we will watch, we will make noise for our guys to win.  But we all feel let down in a big way.  We are firmly in The Suck. And it worse to know that the players are dealing with this train wreck when they should be pumped and playing for bigger things.  Whatever.  Let's just kick some Husky butt today.  Incidentally, we think we will win today more than we think we will lose, how's that for a prediction?! 28-24.  And look for the Dorrellistas to come out in full force after the win saying we rushed to judgment on Dorrell and the team.  On to the notes, and Go Bruins!!!
