Ivan Maisel: Neuheisel Makes UCLA Interesting Again

ESPN’s college football analyst Ivan Maisel was on Colin Cowherd’s ESPN Radio show this morning talking about UCLA football. We are told that Maisel talked about Rick Neuheisel as a replacement for Dorrell. His exact words, quoted to us were “Neuheisel makes UCLA interesting again.” If anyone else heard this interview and what was said please let us know. As we have said many times, we at DD are not endorsing any replacement yet. We want to keep the discussion going.

In other news, we are getting Sunshine Reports of great practices, and another choice Dorrellism, from Karl Dorrell again this week, per Brian Dohn:

“It was good to see guys with a little bounce to their step, and really try to work hard on the plan. Tuesdays are usually the hardest day, because that’s when you’re getting most of the information of the game plan, and it seems like these guys did a nice job of attacking the information and trying to get it to be perfected on the very first rep, instead of the third or fourth rep. I was really encouraged with everyone’s focus.”

Look for more fluff from Spaulding Field. At least we can be sure that since the players are “attacking the information” and most likely that Dorrell and the coaching staff are “discipling the resources” and “coaching hard” that we should get a great game on Saturday at Arizona! Looking forward to that. Go Bruins!!

Dorrellisms, Walkerisms, Training Jay Scapegoats Players … Just Another Day Of UCLA Football

The flow of idiocy from our football program is now a constant stream. It seems like every day now we get some new ridiculous or embarrassing comment by one of our coaches or we get hammered in the press. We at DD can’t even keep up anymore. If we put every one of these transgressions up on our site no one, not us not you, would have any time to do anything else. But we are going to summarize a few things that have occurred over the past few days here: read more

Baghdad Karl & Other Stupidity

Some quotes postgame from Karl Dorrell and some of the players have us baffled.  Dorrell's quote goes beyond the usual cliche and unintelligible drivel, beyond the master of the obvious, and beyond the sunshine reports from camp or practices.  Now Karl is starting to sound like Baghdad Bob.  Brian Dohn reportingread more

The Karl Dorrell Press Conference Game

UCLA Bruins football coach Karl DorrellBy now we've all read or heard a Karl Dorrell press conference or two.  We thought we'd play a game with them … the Karl Dorrell Press Conference game. Yeah, not very original sounding, but it's a riot.  It involves alcohol, because you'll need it, so you must be 21 or over to play.

Here's how it works.  We give you a quote from a Karl Dorrell presser, and you guess after which game he made that quote.  If you guess wrong, you drink. If you guess right .. you drink … because in the end does it really matter?  Karl is still our coach.

Let's start with this first quote:

"We still have to worry about us." he said. "I believe our team needs to continue to focus on how we can get better week in and week out, with the details and discipline, on improving what we need to improve. There’s still a lot for us to work on. We’re really going to be hard on the details and the discipline on how to operate and execute."

wait … what??!  Yes it's unintelligible, but when he made the quote is too obvious. Everyone drink.  We're going to make it harder now. Next quote:

"There’s a lot of work for us to be done for this team. Penalties will be addressed any which way, shape and form we can. We have to really utilize our resources in practice; we’re going to have to discipline those resources as well just to make sure we’re getting our points across."

huh?! Discipline those resources??!? read more

Monday Morning Roundup: Worst 4-1 Team In The Nation?

Here we are in week 5, October, we are 4-1 and at #25 in one poll, USA Today coaches poll, and out of the rankings in the other, AP media poll.   This is not how we, or most people, envisioned this season going.  We should be at 5-0 and in the top 10 and yet we are only relieved to be at 4-1.   It's even more odd that a UCLA team can be 4-1 and not be ranked in one poll and only ranked #25 in another.  Not odd obviously when you consider pollsters are tired of being burned by Dorrell.   Dorrell is living in a Missouri state of mind … pollsters are saying "Show Me."  At #25 in only 1 poll, an argument can be made that we may actually be the worst 4-1 team in the country.

All that won't matter if Dorrell wins the conference.  Next up is our last OOC game.  0-5 Notre Dame is coming to Pasadena this Saturday knowing that read more

Karl Dorrell The Author: Football For Dummies

Football For Dummies By Karl Dorrell head coach of UCLA BruinsIt looks as though Karl Dorrell has found time to write a much needed book on the fundamentals of football.  We're pretty sure the beat press is going to be reading it thoroughly in the coming days.

We told you all to look for the Football For Dummies book earlier this morning.  We were a little surprised to see that Karl Dorrell was the author and that Training Jay Norvell is a co-author as well.  But there it is on the cover of the book … courtesy of Grok 451 at BruinsNation. Click on the image to the left to see a full picture of the cover jacket.   Dorrell can still run the table and make us all look foolish … nah!

Karl Dorrell Gets Spanked By Brian Dohn

Sensationalist title to our post? Sure. Unfair to both Karl Dorrell and Brian Dohn? Probably.  Karl Dorrell getting spanked by Brian Dohn in a blog posting?  Priceless.  Karl Dorrell deserves the backlash he is now getting on the internet for his soon to be infamous arrogant asshat "football 101" response to a reporter's question earlier this week.  Brian Dohn, LA Daily News, added to that backlash today with a response that is sure to warm the halls of Morgan Center.  First, Karl's famous outburst:

Asked what made the defense so good, coach Karl Dorrell was quite indignant to a group of beat writers. “Like you guys really know,’’ Dorrell said. “That’s football 101.’’  Class begins Saturday at Oregon State.

Here is Brian Dohn's take on the issue that has been all the rage of the Bruin internet:  read more

Karl Dorrell Exposed, Gets Testy With Beat Press

Maybe the fault lines are starting to show, maybe the pressure is getting to be too much.  Lately, Karl Dorrell has gotten bitchy with the press and others over simple things and questions.  He's also exposed again his lack of hard core football knowledge.  Take for instance this exchange with beat reporters when asked what makes Oregon State's defense one of the best in the conference, Chris Foster LA Times reporting:

Dorrell said that Oregon State's defense was "definitely the best we have played against to this point."

And what makes the Beavers so tough?

"They're good," Dorrell said.

In what areas?

"Well, they're good everywhere," Dorrell said. "They're good against the run. They're good against the pass. . . . They are very good."

Great in depth analysis there Karl.  It would be one thing to read more

Dorrell: I Like What We’re Doing Now

Looks like Sunshine Reports, as one Bruinzone poster put it,  are coming from Dorrell now too.  Here is what Dorrell had to say about this week's practices, Rich Perelman LA Times reporting

UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell was pleased with Wednesday’s spirited and intense practice, which included almost an hour of work accompanied by very loud crowd noise.

"I thought the offense looked sharp," he said. "I thought Ben [Olson] looked sharp, he operated pretty well with all of our game-planning things. I like what we’re doing right now."

There you have it. It's not exactly Dorrell "adding himself" to the coaching units this week but it's worth noting he thinks the players are looking "sharp." We can pretty much expect a focused and strong effort from the team this Saturday. No letdown from the emotion charged bounce back win over Washington.  All we need now is a little "added" Dorrell and we should be a lock to win at Corvalis.  And Dorrell doesn't leave any presser lately without doling out a choice Dorrellism or two.  This time its a mini-Dorrellism … "game-planning things."  You know, those game-planning thingys … Ben is good with them thingys.  Nice.

Dorrell In Full Self-Preservation Mode, Insiders Talk Replacements

Now that we "worked" the 2nd worst Pac-10 team - annihilated the worst defense in the Pac-10 and dominated the 7th worst offense in the Pac-10 - the Dorrell cultists and MSM apologists are out in full force.  Even on our site, a Dorrellista is saying that Dorrell is now off the hot seat.  It's to be expected.  We will hear more of this the next 2 weeks when we play equally bad (Oregon St.) and worse (Notre Dame) teams.  5-1 and these cultists are going to be reviving talk of Pac-10 championship and Dorrellian glory.

And it's not just the cult and the MSM apologists that are bringing the righteous talk. It's Dorrell himself, in full self-preservation mode. Check our this odd bit of chest-thumping:

"We needed a difference in me this week,'' he said. "It was important for me to coach hard. I have good coaches on this staff, but I'm the added coach who is coaching every area. I was trying to emphasize what my role is given the circumstances from the week before. I like challenges and being put up to the task like this. I answered the bell, and I'm going to continue answering the bell like I did this week."
