Why Do Inexperienced Assistants Expect Only The Best Head Coaching Jobs??

What ever happened to “earning” it?! In college football these days it seems like inexperienced assistants expect to be given the best head coaching jobs in the country. Karl Dorrell at UCLA, Mike Shula at Alabama, and now Randy Shannon at Miami. Three top coaching jobs go to guys with no head coaching experience. And two young early 30 something assistants at Southern Cal, Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian, wanted to be interviewed for the Arizona State head coaching job. There are names just like them for every top job available. What is going on? Why can’t they prove themselves at smaller programs first?? Why is there this sense of entitlement?

Experienced Coaches Win Championships

There are many coaches out there proving themselves at the mid-major level or smaller Div 1 programs. Many of the most successful coaches today got their start taking head coaching positions the same way. Look at the recent champions (more…)
