Next Up Oregon State’s Mike Riley

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

Update 2: Guess who else is in San Francisco this weekend … Lane Kiffin.  A San Diego radio station is reporting, according to internet rumor, that Lane Kiffin will be interviewed by Dan Guerrero as well. Take it FWIW.

Update: As quickly as one report about our coaching search goes up another follows stating the opposite. Corvalis Gazette says LAT report about Riley not true.  Read more at bottom.

It's been a little manic the last few days with all the announcements.  One more won't change the atmosphere.  Rich Perelman of the LAT is reporting that Oregon State's Mike Riley will interview with Dan Guerrero for the HC position today in San Francisco:  (more…)

FWIW, Terry Donahue: Rick Neuheisel Right Coach For UCLA

Friday, December 28th, 2007

From the FWIW department:  Terry Donahue just had a 15 minute interview on AM 570 and said that Rick Neuheisel "is the right coach for UCLA."  That was a bit of a shocker. Given the past between the two we fully expected Donahue to support Walker for head coach.  He did not, although it wasn't clear what his opinion of Walker was.  Donahue did say that "there are other coaches that are right for UCLA too." He said that as if to say that the search process was not complete so RN was not the only coach he'd support.

We have long said that (more…)

Guerrero’s Dilemma

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

Editor's Note:  BruinBlue at BruinsNation.com wrote this great piece below on the current coaching search.  We thought we'd bring it to you in whole as it describes the situation Guerrero finds himself in, whether he created it or not.

We are all still hoping that Dan Guerrero ends this extensive coaching search with a winning hire . And that might well still happen.  But I think it would be pollyannish to believe that the ultimate choice is going to be someone who is met with consensus approval, or whose name immediately gains us much-sought national respect for both the process and the hire.  It is tempting to simply hope that the man who brought in Ben Howland will do it again; but it is equally easy to believe that this search has been mishandled and compromised to such an extent that however it ends up, there are going to be some very unhappy people, and some immediate problems to deal with.

As I said the other day, no one is certain as to (more…)

Louisville Press: Steve Kragthorpe Contacted By UCLA, Not Interested

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

This from WLKY Louisville (HT to puffdaddy at BruinZone):

Newschannel 32 has learned University of Louisville football coach Steve Kragthorpe was contacted by UCLA. The university confirms Kragthorpe was contacted about the head coaching position that's currently open, but there were no face-to-face meetings. We're told Kragthorpe said he wasn't interested.  UCLA’s coaching search is in its third week.

Good to know that we are contacting good coaches. Not sure what else to believe about this report.  If the local press couldn't get this info DG is doing something right.

Sporting News: New Names

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Update:  TJ Simers is reporting in his hit job on Dan Guerrero that Steve Kragthorpe is rumored to be interviewing for the job.  If true, it would be odd, as Kragthorpe was forced to retain staff at Louisville and it has turned out badly.  There is no way he would do it again with UCLA (HT to raebreadraz at BruinsNation).

Tom Deinhart is probably more on top of UCLA football than any of our beat press "journalists," and a slight bit more fair in his reporting … remember his now famous story on Walker meeting with Guerrero during the season?!!  Deinhart is becoming a must read for Bruin fans … here is the latest news his sources have come up with:  (more…)

More Notes On Coaching Search

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Editor's Note:  If you haven't already voted for who you think should be our next head football coach, do so today, as we will be closing the round 2 voting later this evening.  Next round, Wednesday or Thursday, we cut to the top 5 vote getters.

Much news to report, so we'll jump right to it.  Many of you already know that Brian Dohn reported yesterday that Dan Guerrero is making candidates keep their traps shut during and after the interviewing process:

None of the football coaching candidates have made any public statement, not even to beat writers in the cities covering those teams.  Why? UCLA AD Dan Guerrero is telling the guys not to talk to the media about the search, who is interviewed, or how the interviews are going, according to sources.

Apparently DeWayne Walker didn't get the message.   Meanwhile, (more…)

Chancellor Could Get Final List Next Week!

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Wow.  LAT is reporting that Chancellor Block could get the list of final candidates to review and make a decision next week.  This is a bit of a shocker, especially considering we have only a few names that we know have been interviewed (Walker, Chow, Neuheisel and Harbaugh):  (more…)

Dohn Sources: Dan Guerrero Thinks This Is Career Shaping Hire

Friday, December 14th, 2007

We have said for over a year that this new hire for Dan Guerrero will shape his legacy and make certain once and for all what UCLA thinks of it's football program.  Today, Brian Dohn wrote on his blog that his sources are confirming that Dan Guerrero believes the same:

I am told Guerrero believes this could be a career-shaping hire, and he is feeling the pressure of it.

Great!  That is good news.  Dohn is also (more…)

Dan Guerrero Speaks …

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By now you know that Dan Guerrero issued a press release regarding the search:

"Our search for a head football coach at UCLA is progressing. Within the last week, we have done a lot of fact-finding and have also been involved in detailed discussions with some candidates. We will meet with other candidates in the very near future.

"I know our fans and donors have a strong interest in the search and I certainly appreciate their support of our program. Our goal for the search is to find the best head football coach for our program. We are working diligently and I am confident that we will achieve our goal."

A couple of points. Obviously (more…)
