A Fairytale: The Tailor-Made Suit

Editor's Note:  This is the second post from new DD contributor Dana.

Once upon a time, there was a poor, young man who traveled west to a great kingdom to ask for the hand of the most beautiful princess in the world. But, when he tried to enter the castle, the guards sneered at him and refused him entrance.

"What can you offer the Princess?" sneered the guards. "A thousand princes come, offering gifts, and you come dressed only in your dirty rags."

And, so the young man would have returned home if not for read more

Here Are The Daily Bruin Ads: Awaiting Final Approval

Editor's Note:  We have 5 Daily Bruin ad placements.  The first ad is a half-pager on Monday. We will have ads after Oregon and after SuC. We dont want to say exactly when so that there are no Save Dorrell ads in competition. We will let you know the day before.

The Daily Bruin ads are now complete!  The only thing remaining is final approval from the editor and whomever makes the decisions on ad copy.  We got word that the draft copy was ok with them, but you never know.  There were 46 Bruin fans (make that 47 now), after some requested and received refunds, who stepped up and made this happen.  They not only talked the talk, they walked the walk.

On to the copy.  Below are 2 ad types, obviously not to scale. The first is the copy for the 1/2 page ad (the 1/4 pager looks the same only shorter and wider) and the second is the copy for the 1/8 pager.  We kept the large quote font for the 1/8 pager because it stands a better chance of getting noticed.  The DB initially wanted the same large quote font for the other 2 ad sizes but it detracted from the ad in our opinion.  Here they are, fire away with your thoughts:  read more

Daily Bruin Ad Copy

Below is the draft ad copy we are going to use for the Daily Bruin ad.  We are still waiting to hear from some contributors, but most contributors have agreed to have their donations used for the ad so we should have enough to meet the cost.  Some have declined and we have refunded their donations. A couple of people have made donations since last weekend to add to the total.  If you are one of the contributors that still has not responded please contact us.   Here is a draft of the copy that will go to the DB Tuesday (it may be too long), fire away with your thoughts:  read more

Update On Advertising

Editor’s note: We’ve received some pretty good arguments off-line for placing an ad in the LAT, so we are going to check into that too now.

A lot to get to tomorrow, but first we do some housekeeping. We did not get in touch with the Daily Bruin advertising because the only time one of our editors could call ended up being in the late afternoon just after 4 pm and wouldn’t you know the DB advertising section closes at 4 pm. So, it will have to wait until tomorrow. We don’t have any idea who the VIPs are that have influence with the AD but chances are some of the people who influence the VIPs read the Daily Bruin. We are not so sure about the LA Times sports section. Also, we KNOW that placing an ad in the DB reaches at least Bruin fans, still the most important secondary audience for many reasons but primarily due to their influence over our primary audience as we have said, whereas the same cannot be said for the LAT. So, we are going with the DB. Again, putting it in the paper makes it REAL. As for the copy itself we will wait to see what ad sizes and copy will be allowed. We will hit two main point centering around the main theme of excellence: 1) Time for Dorrell to go, and 2) We need a proven experienced winning coach.

Daily Bruin Editor: No Policy Against Publishing DumpDorrell.com Ad

We received an email response from the editor of the Daily Bruin, Saba Riazati. You might recall that we emailed Saba on Friday after we received word from the group whose ad got killed (see the killed ad below) that they were told by Daily Bruin staff that DD ads were banned. We asked Saba whether the Daily Bruin had a policy of prohibiting ads from DumpDorrell.com. Saba has informed us that there is no policy prohibiting DumpDorrell.com from placing an ad in the newspaper. Saba then referred us to a staffer to work with and we will contact the staffer on Monday morning and go from there.

DD and BruinsNation readers demanded that we move on the billboard idea. We think raising over $2,000 is a great effort, especially considering that we’ve had 2 horrible losses since we initiated the campaign leaving many people to believe that it’s obvious that Dorrell will be fired and no billboard is needed. That might be a reason for the stall in donations. We believe that Dorrell’s firing is not yet a lock and we cannot take this for granted. In fact, now more than ever is the time to apply pressure. We need to make it so REAL that it read more

Billboard Update

Editor’s Note: The ChipIn team updated our ChipIn widget to include the donations made prior to us installing the widget to log donations. The current total is now the correct total. If you make a contribution and do not see an update within 10 minutes clear your browser cache and reload the page to see the updated total.

Our billboard collection has stalled the last couple of days at $1,959 from 42 contributors. If we lose to Arizona we expect to have that number shoot up. If we don’t make our goal of $11,000 it has been suggested by many that we ask contributors if putting an ad in the Daily Bruin would be a substitute they would agree to. Obviously with the recent story of the Fire Dorrell ad we know that the Daily Bruin is open to publishing an ad in the paper. If you don’t already know the Daily Bruin killed the ad at the last minute because they realized that the site promoted in the copy was an adult site. We knew that days before but we never saw the ad copy so we did not know the URL of the site was contained in it (if in fact it was). The editors could have removed the URL reference and still run the ad, and why they didn’t is a mystery.

Anyhow, if this scenario plays out read more

Brian Dohn Confirms: Fire Dorrell Ad Running In Daily Bruin Today

Brian Dohn of the Daily News confirmed with the publisher of The Daily Bruin that quarter page ad stating that Dorrell should be fired has been purchased by a law firm in the OC and will run in today’s paper. Dohn:

An ad was purchased and will run in today’s Daily Bruin calling for Dorrell to be fired, according to Saba Riazati, the newspaper’s editor in chief. The contact number given for the buyer of the ad is a law firm in Orange County.

Riazati added the ad is “a little larger than a quarter of a page,” and was subject to the same guidelines as other ads for the publication.

“I’ve had at least a couple of students come up to me and skip the preamble of asking whether or not Dorrell’s going to lose his job, and just ask who I think will be replacing him,” said David Woods, a senior and football beat reporter for the Daily Bruin.”

If anyone sees this ad please email us the copy so that we can let everyone know. Great job by the people who bought this ad!!

Fire Dorrell Ad In The Daily Bruin Tomorrow

We are not 100% sure this will happen, but someone may have purchased a Fire Dorrell ad that will go in tomorrow’s Daily Bruin. If this is true, it is not us at DD. We think its a great idea and maybe if it doesn’t happen we should consider it (we did discuss this before) but it is not our doing. Just fyi. Look for it tomorrow.

Official Scapegoat #3: WR Coach DJ McCarthy Goes To LSU

So DJ McCarthy did the one-two to LSU, apparently not coming to terms with his alma mater and Ty Willingham at Udub. HT to Bluestreet at BruinsNation for picking this up. He’s got a nice write-up on the news. As he points out, McCarthy is one of 4 coaches we expected would be out after the end of last season.

Some “reporters” would have you think read more
