Mission Accomplished! Final Post
Today we leave the Bruin internet pretty darn satisfied. We accomplished what we set out to do and got what we wanted. Bruin football is in great hands now, and the future looks very bright. The excitement around our football program is as uplifting, if not more, as the excitement around our basketball program was when we hired Ben Howland. We are already seeing the benefits of the change in leadership. UCLA football is back, and we can all now go back to being just fans again.
We have to thank Dan Guerrero for keeping his promise and doing the right thing - he made a commitment to excellence. For the first time in 40 years(!) UCLA football has chartered a new and promising course. We fired a coach after 5 years of non-performance. And, we hired, at long last, a football coach with successful experience. These two events are not foreign to UCLA football, we have done better in the past. But they were foreign to those who have occupied Morgan Center and Murphy Hall for far too long. Thankfully, Dan Guerrero looked to our distant past for answers and he made the right decisions. Guerrero renewed a tradition of hiring successful experience that once served us well and, we are most confident, will lead our football program to a stronger and better future.
We feel pretty good about our role in this change too. We started this blog nearly 2 years ago on a lark. We thought it would be fun to get our punches in on the debate regarding our football team. We had a couple of failed dry runs until we settled on this blogging platform, and then got going pretty hard the Summer of '06. We got to 100 visitors a day pretty quickly and we thought it was crazy that that many people would read what we had to say. When thousands started visiting this site daily we realized that Bruin football fans now looked to us to do more than just blog, they were passionate about Bruin football and wanted to see us help affect change. Soon we had a mission and we took it seriously. We did have fun, but soon after starting this blog we set out to get the job done.
People may argue whether blogs like ours or BruinsNation.com had any impact in the decision to fire Dorrell and/or hire a successful experienced coach in his place. Regular DumpDorrell and BruinsNation readers know better than anyone the impact we have had. There were far too many posts to mention on both our sites that shaped news and opinion on Bruin football beyond the internet, but here are some:
- The initial petition that got nationwide attention on Sports Illustrated's website, among others.
- The numerous news articles published locally and around the conference about our movement.
- The numerous radio interviews locally, nationally and on the internet.
- The Eric Scott arrest and subsequent revelation of previous convictions and his improper hiring.
- The revelation that Dorrell fired an assistant by text message.
- The complete annihilation of Kurt Streeter's tabloid hit piece on UCLA - so much that his media colleagues dismissed his work live on air - and the exposure of his psychotic thinking by a DD reader.
- That was followed with the exposure by a DD reader of Karl Dorrell's apology regarding Streeter's piece, and his later public announcement distancing himself from it.
- The exposure by a DD reader of the football program's faculty liaison Don Morrison as a pompous administrator, out of touch with his constituency, and his subsequent public apology for his unacceptable attack on a DD reader and Bruin football fan.
- The Daily Bruin ad that changed the perception on campus towards our football program, galvanized alumni to make a change, and made Dorrell's firing an inevitability. It is no accident that Dan Guerrero later said at a presser that he was looking for "successful experience" to replace Dorrell, the exact words used in the Daily Bruin ad and on this site.
- The List of Karl Dorrell's record that was passed around the Bruin internet virally and repeated in news articles in bits and pieces that made our case obvious and about performance.
We could note many others of course. We point all this out for a simple reason. We want to show that we have proven a time-tested truth, that united we can do anything. DumpDorrell simply was an organizing tool for the faithful. People came here to get news and a different take sure. But DD was always about change and DD readers knew that. When we asked you to act you did. You sent your emails to Dan Guerrero, to Chancellor Block, to Karl Dorrell, to the news media, to Kurt Streeter, to Don Morrison. You got on the radio stations and called Morgan Center. You signed the petition. And 47 of you paid $2,400 for the Daily Bruin ads (thank you again DD 47!). THAT was the reason UCLA has a new football coach and is set on a new direction. We got what we wanted despite the overwhelming local media bias and support to save Dorrell and campaign to hire the inexperienced DeWayne Walker. This was a people's victory. It came from the bottom up. We can affect change again at any time if we have the will. We all know that now.
Thankfully change did come. We knew that we at DD would stop posting after this season no matter what happened. We told other Bruin site operators privately that we couldn't commit the time necessary to do the job right any more past this season. So if Dorrell had been given one more year, we would not have been here to continue the battle. Again, thanks to all Bruin fans' efforts, especially DD and BruinsNation readers, it didn't end up mattering. But we meant what we said. We are at the end of the road of our blogging career. We achieved our goal so we are done. Many have asked us to continue on in some new form. We won't be doing that. Instead, we will most likely disappear from the Bruin internet for a long while. We are happy to be just fans again.
We ask you to go visit BruinsNation, the best Bruin site there is. Also, we recommend BruinRoar, who posts very informative and interesting takes on all things Bruin. We also recommend Bruinville for daily Bruin news and they also have a forum.
We will keep this site up as a historical record of the fight to get our football program committed to excellence. Although we will not publish any more, making these posts available as an archive is important in our opinion. We know that we will be coming back to read about past games and past skirmishes in the battle to win back our football program. Also, when the inevitable posturing about our team begins again we can look back to the record as evidence. We don't know how long this site will be up, but another Bruin site might host it if we no longer can. So it will be up for a while.
We wish the best for Karl Dorrell. There certainly might be a program out there where he would be a good fit as head coach. Simply because that program wasn't UCLA doesn't mean it can't be somewhere else. We hope Karl Dorrell gets that chance to coach again and wish him the best in any endeavor he takes on.
So, here is our farewell. Thank you all for your support and efforts. We are proud to have done our part. Now we have some exciting football to look forward to!!! Go Bruins!!!

Well done! Bravo!!!! BEAT FRESNO!
Sanji @ 11:51 am:
I would like to thank all you guys @ DD for all the hard work you have done for the past two years. I have been loyal reader for about 1 1/2 years and am going to miss all the witty posts, rumors and news. It’s a great feeling to know that our football program is in much better shape than it was when this site was launched and I do believe that you guys had a hand in it. I am quite certain that the new staff will bring our program to the prominence it ones held and also place UCLA as a whole in the national spotlight.
Once again, my sincere gratitude to all you guys @ DD.

Thank you DD. You have served faithfully in this effort. Don’t let anyone ever tell you that your effort did not influence change. It did! It changed the conversation, it changed the focus, it changed us, and ultimately, it changed the Coach. Thank you for providing all of us a place to release our frustration and for us to feel as though we matter beyond just our ticket purchase. Thank you for a job well done.
colonybruin @ 12:16 pm:
Dump Dorrell I am sure the Gods are smiling down upon you __I think you give way too much credit to danny-boy __ with only one win (usc) . . dorrell would still be our head coach ___ danny-boy had to do what he did __ also dorrell will never be a head coach, he does-not have the mental make-up, to do it __ he is not the leader-type
3xbruin @ 12:32 pm:
Thanks DumpDorrell for the excellent reporting. Your efforts made a huge difference. It was the best (and only) soap opera I have followed. U-C-L-A f’SC.
Wes Wellman @ 12:34 pm:
You asnwered the questions all activists face-”If not now, when? If not me, who?”
There will probably never be a place for you in the UCLA Hall of Fame but, you will always have a place in the hearts of Bruin fans.
Andy @ 1:14 pm:
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Let’s hope that in 3 years we don’t have to see a NixNeuheisal.com spring up. My gut tells me we won’t have to worry about that! Go Bruins!!
JRBruin @ 1:24 pm:
Thanks DD, in my frustration with the performance of our football team over the past few years I needed somewhere to turn. This site gave us all an outlet to vent and share with likeminded fans. We’ve won a great victory and things are looking up, Go Bruins!
Fox 71 @ 1:45 pm:
I just want to echo the other sentiments. You kept a clear head, and kept your focus where it belonged. You kept up a relentless argument that could not be refuted because it was fact based. You didn’t get distracted by all the BS that was thrown around. And you not only took action, you made it clear that the rest of us could either vote for business as usual or take action ourselves to vote for change.
BruinFamily @ 3:19 pm:
Thanks more than words can say, DD! This site helped give me hope while moping through the dark days of unimaginative football.
Fantastic the way I got more relevant and timely news here (and on BN) than any other source.
Now that we’re on the right track, I think I’ll go introduce myself to my family . . .
Mike R '93 @ 3:28 pm:
Thank you DD, I have enjoyed all of the updates. I like all of you want our football program back to National Prominence and success as in the decade of the 90’s when we defeated our crosstown rival SC many times. UCLA football was exciting with potent offenses. Now, we have a new coach who will rejuvenate all staff, athletes, alumni, and fans. Thanks for all your efforts DD, you will be missed. GO BRUINS!!!!
Tony Calig @ 3:38 pm:
Thank you DD crew for providing the information and forum with which much needed positive change could germinate and finally come to fruition for our football program. Though I have not posted in the six months that I’ve been a faithfull reader of DD, I have greatly enjoyed the posts and comments. On numerous occasions, I e-mailed both the Chancellor and the AD in order to voice my opinion as a Bruin alumnus and long time football season ticket holder. My personal choice, Coach Neuheisel, has now been selected. As I walk amongst the groups of fellow tailgaiters on my way into the Rose Bowl to cheer on our Bruins this coming Fall, I’ll look into the faces of the fans and wonder, do I know you from DD? Thank you everyone for everything. GO BRUINS!!!
DigDog @ 4:16 pm:
Thanks for your invaluable service to frustrated Bruin football fans everywhere!
BuckeyeBruin @ 4:43 pm:
Thanks again DD! You are a true change agent. I’m forever grateful–if it weren’t for you Dorrell would still be HC, we’d be embarking on another 6-7 season. Go Bruins!! Go Buckeyes!!
BuckeyeBruin @ 4:50 pm:
I’d be remiss in not thanking TroJan Simers again for publishing your site address in his column. I’m sure I’m not the only one who got here because of him.
DD has been a shining light in the despair of this past season in UCLA football.
Adios Amigos! BruinBuckeye (Proud DD47 member)
jon udell @ 5:23 pm:
you fought the good fight
BruinBuddy @ 6:00 pm:
DD thask for many hours of informative pleasure that turned into an actual interacting operative venture. Without your site I will likely have to go back to playing on-line poker to waste away my golden years. But likely I will come out of retirement and start working again to be able to afford those season tickets after the price hike comes.
Any word on Norm Chow since the Titans lost today. Actually his offense was very UN-Chow today and Nerd Turner made a fool out of Jeff FU$CHER.
Jesse @ 6:33 pm:
Thank you DD for all your efforts in getting UCLA football back on the right track. I also wish Karl Dorrell nothing but success if and when he lands on his feet. It is now full steam ahead and thanks for all the sites to check out regarding all things Bruin. Go Bruins and looking forward to the 2008 season.
BruinFanBaby @ 8:23 pm:
Thanks for everything DumpDorrell! GO BRUINS!!!

Great job DD. I only discovered your excellent website recently. It was great to hear what other people had to say and also great to have a venue to share our thoughts.
Thanks again!
DigDog @ 10:22 pm:
Good luck and good night.
Bob Stiles @ 10:26 pm:
Who’s got the rights to the DUMPDORRELL.COM book and film rights. It’s a great story. The first and maybe the last of it’s kind. Wouldn’t we all love to know what transpired behind the scenes. WOW! Bob Stiles
David75 @ 11:08 pm:
Thanks to everyone who contributed to DD. I loved it all. It was the first thing I read after my work day. Best of all, we won and got the coach that was the perfect fit for UCLA. It would be great if we could all get together before the games at the Bowl and knock down a few beers and talk about all the Bruin good times.
Gary @ 11:10 pm:
norm chow is expected to be announced as the new OC at UCLA on Tuesday
J.J. @ 11:51 pm:
Gary? how shure are you about Chow being the O.C? anyone else have any word on this as well????
January 7, 2008
bruinhoo @ 1:33 am:
Thank you DD for the work you have put into this effort over the past 2 years. You did so much to make the case that Dorrell was the wrong man to coach our bruins, and in such a clear and iron clad way. Your efforts got the attention of the media, and provided UCLA alums and fans the weapons to advance the cause to those outside the loop in a clear, methodical manner. The cause may be at an end, but your devotion will always be remembered.
O D Taylor lll @ 8:54 am:
Thank You, I will be able to ware my UCLA hat with pride again. My Dump Dorrell T-Shirt is a classic only to be talked about not worn.
drbob @ 10:06 am:
Dump Dorrell, Thank you so much for advocating for UCLA football and the first step of firing Karl Dorrell.
Your site and effort was a major reason for his firing, and the subsequent hiring of an experienced Head Coach.
Now UCLA has a committment to excellence in football, not mediocrity.
Thank you again for helping to rescue UCLA football,
drbob
ATP @ 10:55 am:
DD….As a famous man once said, “The paper burns, but the words fly free.”
Indeed, the words recorded herein will forever fly free.
Thank you.
John W. Reagan @ 11:13 am:
Well done! I can’t wait to see Coach Neuheisel bring UCLA into the hunt for Pac-10, and national championships. GO BRUINS!
John Rowley @ 11:17 am:
Neuheisel is a great choice!! I just hope that everyone gives him a chance. Next year will be tough, as he will have a very young and inexperienced team. Let’s make sure our expectations for next season are not unreasonable…
Go Bruins!
BillSouthBay @ 11:38 am:
Excellent and dedicated effort DD!! You posted sensible POV’s at all times, and backed up your comments with facts. What a refreshing change. The mission is accomplished at last and now I am confident that UCLA will build on the once proud tradition in football and be the best in town, and a BCS contender under RN’s leadership and management.
I also echo your comments about KD. I hope, if he wants to coach, that he goes to a less stressed environment, say a D-II school, and develop his craft and success record, learn the shortcomings that are all too evident on national TV and in front of a large audience, and who, knows, he may return to the national ranks one day.
Bill
Long-Suffering Bruin Football Fan @ 12:36 pm:
I’ve never posted on a blog before, but I just had to say Thank You! I never found it necessary to post here because you guys pretty much stated my feelings exactly. (I had actually coined the term “Commitment to Mediocrity” myself well before I heard it here.) I’m sick of this loser mentality regarding Bruin football, so this was more like a support group for me, a long-suffering Bruin football fan. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I would gladly trade 5 of those basketball championships for just 1 in football in my lifetime! (I was born well after 1954!)
I would have preferred June Jones, but I’m thoroughly impressed with the excitement Neuheisel has already brought! What a great time to be a Bruin! Thanks again!
J.J. @ 1:31 pm:
I want to thank D.D. for a good job and all of my fellow Bruins for the fight we fought and for us all,for coming together and showing that there actually are die-hard Ucla fans and that teams like Michigan and Ohio State aren’t the only schools that have loyal fans!!!! now we need to make shure and sell-out The Rose Bowl and make it one of the tuffest places to play in the nation. Usc does it,so can we!!!! Nuehiesel is already changing the perception of our football program. now,we as fans, have to change the perception that us fans only go to Ucla football games when we are winning and not losing. we should be able to sell out all our home games and start becoming the 12th Bruin! What do you say fellow Bruins!!!??? for us die-hard Bruin fans,we are the 12th Bruin!!!! what do you think my fellow Bruins? catchy or not? give me your thoughts? I might have shirts printed for our home games.
Lifelong Bruin fan @ 1:38 pm:
Thanks to DD for the opportunity to allow Bruin fans to come together and voice their opinions here, and thanks to the other bloggers who made the experience an enjoyable one.
Go Bruins!
Tom @ 2:17 pm:
I just want to thank the WHOLE Bruin Nation for coming together on this and especially DumpDorrell.com for all their efforts to bringing UCLA Football back to it’s road to DOMINANCE. I sincerly believe this site, had a lot to do with turning the Program around as well as the Boosters.
I’m going to now be a season holder for the first time now, and I can say that for the first time in 5 yrs that I ‘m truly exited about UCLA Football once again. Hopefully I can see you guys next year @ the Rose Bowl.
I wish CF started tomorrow, but we’ll just have to wait. Well goodbye BN and see you @ the game. For all you TrOJans that visited this site(i.e Andre?) a change in the wind is coming, and is heading to Westwood.
If the head people at DD ever create another site of support(which it should) please email me with the address site.
Goodbye my Friends.
BruWIN your Life…Don’t SCum it!
Pete zacheat @ 8:18 pm:
Thanks for all Your hard work and HAPPY NEU YEAR!!
GO BRUINS!!!
colonybruin @ 8:57 pm:
Next year will be great __ we don’t have seniors or experience, but we do have the talent __ all these kids needed was real coaching __ rick-baby will show you, what good coaching can do __ the kids will finish next year, no worse than 10 wins _ biggest problem is Q-B . . . . maybe the D-B’s BUT a Good Def. Line will negate that _ we should have a Good D-Line _ so we get at least 10 wins __ the kids will show you that bad coaching is almost impossible to over-come __

did anyone post Rick’s record vs Pete Carroll?
January 15, 2008
Bruin genius @ 7:40 am:
>did anyone post Rick’s record vs Pete Carroll?
I believe he is 1-1 vs. Pete Carroll, and is 4-1 vs. Mike Bellotti.
buycker @ 2:41 pm:
Thanks, genius, sounds pretty respectable to me!
Greg from FV @ 5:00 pm:
Norm Chow is now available!
January 16, 2008
Andre @ 7:29 am:
Wow!!! The bestest, most fantasticist, absolute GOD of a coach, Norm Chow, just got his ass dumped.
Well, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Steve 56 @ 1:13 pm:
Get Norm Chow now !!!
buycker @ 2:36 pm:
OMG, if we could only get Chow….
January 21, 2008
DumpDorrell @ 12:03 pm:
Neu gets Chow!!! It’s official. We now have the best coaching staff in the conference!!! Incredible. This site was about bringing excellence back to UCLA football. We KNEW it was possible, it was only a matter of choice. There were so many objections to this simple desire it was mind numbing. Dan Guerrero made the right choice, and now we have Neu, Chow, and Walker … the triumvirate. UCLA Football is back!!

RISE UP @ 9:19 pm:
I’ve died and gone to heaven!!!! ATP , YOU WERE RIGHT ,I WAS WRONG ,Rick is the right man for the job . Now were gonna see something special over the next few years with this awesome group of coaches . Great coordinators and a bad ass o-line coach , WOW !
BuckeyeBruin @ 10:09 pm:
Yahoo!!!! Welcome back to LA Norm, and way to go Rick!! Neu has only been on the job a few weeks and he’s already put together a stellar coaching staff. This is such a welcome emotional lift after another dismal end to Ohio State’s (and UCLA’s) football seasons.
Now I can’t wait for fall. Go Bruins!!
Buckeye Bruin (now doing an 8-clap)
Ted H. @ 10:56 pm:
Congratulations! What a great move in getting Norm Chow has OC. Can’t wait for Spring practice!
Go Bruins!

Good Job guys
January 24, 2008
JC @ 7:50 pm:
We still have two bums at QB. Chow cannot help these two bums. We need better QBs.
Greg from FV @ 9:24 pm:
Now that Dorrell has been hired by the Dolphins, I wonder if UCLA will have a reduced payout to him instead of the $2 mil they have to pay him in the next two years?
January 30, 2008
buycker @ 5:58 pm:
We’re getting a five star JUCO QB named Kraft, started some games for his Dad at San Diego State before following him to MSAC.
January 31, 2008
Ted H. @ 12:22 pm:
Yes, that is Kevin Craft, who is the son of Tom Craft, the former SDSU HC. I believe he played at Mt. Sac. in Walnut. Kevin was headed to Hawaii to play for June Jones and then possibly SMU before Rick and Norm Chow called him and changed his mind. Should be some good competition at the QB position next season.
