Rick Neuheisel Hires Ken Norton Jr.?

There are conflicting reports but SuC players drenched Ken Norton Jr. yesterday at the Rose Bowl, which kind of backs up ABC's report during the game that Rick Neuheisel hired Ken Norton Jr. to be on his staff.  The obvious question is in what capacity?? Defensive Coordinator, as ABC suggested??  It would be hard to believe that the ink is dry on such a deal when the LAT is reporting that Neu will be meeting with DeWayne Walker this morning about the DC position.  Obviously, if Walker stays because Rick wants him to and they can come to an agreement then great.  If he doesn't stay then thank you and good luck.

Jill Painter, Daily News, offers some insight

One of our Daily News reporters at the Rose Bowl asked Ken Norton Jr. if he's going to work for UCLA's Rick Neuheisel. Norton said something along the lines of, "Can't I even enjoy this?'' - referring to USC's big Rose Bowl victory. So, he neither confirmed nor denied the ABC report. He was dumped with a Gatorade bath - which he didn't seem happy about - so the signs certainly point to him leaving. Norton, by the way, is a UCLA graduate. His Gatorade bath came before Pete Carroll's.

Scott Wolf, Jill's colleague on the SuC beat adds:

There's been rumors at the Rose Bowl that USC linebackers Ken Norton is being pursued by new UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel. "Man, can't I even enjoy this one?'' Norton said.  USC coach Pete Carroll said he hadn't spoken with Norton yet, but that he's heard rumors that Neuheisel would pursue him. He added that he wanted to retain Norton. "I'm sure Coach Neuheisel hasn't called him yet, and is waiting until the season is over,'' said Carroll, who then rolled his eyes.

Nice.  Neu is already in Chetey Petey's head!!  In less than 72 hours.  Ha!  The season IS over Petey. The NFL is looking pretty good right now isn't it.  Go on … go!

DeWayne Walker is the defensive coordinator of the 34th best defense in the country this year.  There ought to be other great defensive coaches out there.   We trust that Coach Neuheisel, with his 8 years of successful experience and contacts, knows what he is doing.

I like RN’s proactiveness - and maybe weakening SC at the same time.

drbob @ 8:55 am:

It is great that Neuheisel talked at his Presser that he is going to take back the town and get even with those guys at SCum.

His blatant talk about bringing UCLA back to greatness will go over well with potential and verbal recruits, and also instill a different mentality for the team.

As he has put it, UCLA will get back to national prominence and win Pac-10 conference titles again.

Go Neuheisel !!!!!!!

Go Bruins !!!!!!!!!

Tom @ 9:24 am:

Skrew the LAT…That’s a $UC Paper to me!

Tom @ 9:32 am:

Man, I’ve been wanting Ken Norton as a DC since the start…Can you believe that idiot Dorrell passed on him after KN wanted to be the DC for UCLA?! That’s why he went to $UC…That pretty much said a lot a guy as a HC and why he wasn’t successful.

C. Williams, '57 @ 9:44 am:

Tom, the DC job and responsibilities in contemporary division I football is very complex and sophisticated. Ken Norton has potential…and we love him…but is nowhere near-readiness for that level of responsibility. Trust Coach Neuheisel, he knows what he’s doing.

Tom @ 9:49 am:

C. Williams’57- Your Kidding right?! Did you not see what has transpired @ SCum??? Whoa dude, you may want to retract your comment.

ATP @ 9:56 am:

The DD site demonstrated the power that can be generated when a lot of small voices are united and channeled into one large voice. I commend the effort and dedication it took to embark on and accomplish the site’s mission.

With the site’s closure near at hand, this seems like a good time to bid a fond farewell. Also, my wife is threatening to leave me if I don’t get off the computer.

To all bloggers, a huge high-five all around. Great job! You guys (and some of the female persuasion) banded together to debate the issues with civility, knowledge, logic and common sense. Many of the other Bruin sites threw garbage at the wall and hoped it stuck. It didn’t.

BruinBuddy, BruinPal, buycker, Lifelong Bruin Fan, whp ‘68, Roger, and many, many others whose name I simply can’t recall, it was fun!

Best of luck and I’ll see you at the Rose Bowl!

Happy 2008!

Go Bruins!!

C. Williams, '57 @ 10:00 am:

No, Tom, I’m not kidding. Ken was first a non-paid volunteer assistant at SuC, then, he’s just finished a year as the salaried coach of line backers.

ATP @ 10:01 am:

Post Script: I came very close to telling my wife I was gonna miss her.

Fred @ 10:06 am:

C.Williams’57,

You assert that Norton isn’t ready for the responsibilities of being a DC. What are you basing that on??? 13 years as a (pro) player and 4 as a coach and you speak as if he’s a neophyte. Keep in mind that most coordinators are promoted from position and/or asst coaching spots.

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 10:27 am:

Good luck, ATP. Although I know you will be reading, if not posting. You won’t leave this site until this site leaves you. That’s just the way it is.

Tom @ 10:30 am:

C. Williams ‘57-Don’t know whatcha thinking and like Fred said, I don’t know what your basing that on, but you really don’t make any sense. Like I said, a volunteer or not and even if he did just finished his first year as a salaried of Line Backers, again, look at SCum the last few years and think about what you’ve just said. His coaching skills have been speaking volumes.

Tom @ 10:35 am:

ATP-Same to you! Being United , and speaking out really made a difference. I really believe that. Look how much media coverage this site got (ie. the SoCal Papers, ESPN,FOX Sports) We really did put the pressure on DG to get a QUALIFIED HC. As the old song goes

“If the Kids are United, We will never be Divided.”

Oi!

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 10:43 am:

I think that we should not retain Walker. Regardless of what he feels about the Washington job, what he’s doing is very sub-par. This is ego defined. The offer at washington was presented more than a week ago. The UCLA job was given to RN almost a week ago. This whole notion that he has to weigh all of his options is ridiculous. He’s upset he wasn’t given the UCLA job, he likely had convinced himself that he would be given the job, he may have made some promises or some concessions believing he woudl be named Head Coach, and now he’s in a difficult position.

I don’t want him to stay, at this point. I wanted him to stay, if this would’ve been reconciled right away, but now that it isn’t, this truly suggests there can be an ego fight. UNSETTLING!

Lifelong Bruin fan @ 11:49 am:

ATP–Thanks, I really enjoyed reading your comments and I believe you helped raise the level of discussion on this site. Hope to see your comments somewhere else in the future.

Tom–I completely agree with C Williams ‘57: I’m not sure if you understand the difference between being the defensive coordinator and a position coach (like a linebackers coach), but it is huge. Sure KNJ has a lot of playing experience, which qualifies him for being a position coach like he currently is, but he has just started coaching and it would be foolish IMO for UCLA to take a chance on him as a DC without any previous experience in that position. I trust RN to make an educated decision on this matter, but I do think it is great that he is trying to bring back KNJ into the Bruin fold where he belongs. I think he would be an asset for recruiting as well.

As for Walker, if he doesn’t make a decision today after meeting with RN, I would be perfectly happy to see him leave. Sure he deserved some time to think about whether to go to UW or stay, but a protracted decision making time only suggests he is not fully committed to the Bruins.

Tommy Bruin @ 12:00 pm:

Neuheisel is BRINGING SEXY BACK to UCLA Football. Pissing in $uC’s punchbowl by showing up at the Rose Bowl, now hopefully udoing one of the great crimes of the Doofus era and getting Ken Norton Jr. back where he belongs. This is going to be an exciting ride with Coach Neuheisel driving the bus, I can already feel it!

Tom @ 12:05 pm:

Eh, I think KNJ will do fine.

RyBruin @ 12:17 pm:

KNJ would be fine indeed. He is plenty intelligent and football smart to be a DC. I think he might be even more intelligent than a guy who gets dominated by spread offenses and is a “graduate” of Excelsior online College. KNJ has a great personality too.

BruinBuddy @ 12:57 pm:

ATP

Vaya con Dios, mi amigo.

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 1:40 pm:

I agree on KNj’s upside, and I’m thrilled that RN is going to try to win him back from SUC, but I would just like to see, just one time, please, what UCLA can do with a staff rich in coaching experience. I wanted to see a Head Coach with experience and success, we have that now. Now, I want to see a DC that has shown he can win, design a good defensive scheme, place players in their best positions to win, take the most that he can out of his players, and call a good game. We have that with DW. If he leaves, I want to find someone that can bring these attributes. For the O.C., I want the same thing.

Just once I’d like to see a staff filled with experience and success.

UCLABRU1 @ 1:43 pm:

ATP-The Rosebowl will be fun once again. It was great reading and talking sports, thanks. Good luck.

PatG. @ 1:46 pm:

Ditto everyone’s comments about how this website made a critical difference, and did so with class. Congrats to all in charge.
It’s really decision day for DW. Rick has gone way out of his way to express his desire for him to stay. No more groveling, please. If he leaves, so be it.
I suspect, as co-season ticket holders, you all have received the same pre-recorded phone message that I did this morning from Rick Neuheisel. What might not be well known, however, is that all offices at SC got a version of the same message today (a close family friend of mine who works there called to tell me)–”Hi, its Rick Neuheisel…” She said everyone is talking about it.
Happy New Year and Good Luck Rick.

Richard @ 1:54 pm:

KN is the mother of all traitors. I rank him just above Judas, Brutus, and Benedict Arnold. Do we all not remember him bumping chest with Toejam players and acting a fool in the 2005 game? Sick. He needs to walk on his knees 100 times around the Rose Bowl and then blow Joe Bruin after. On another note, someone needs to tell that old, senile goat Lee Corso that the Rose Bowl is UCLA’s home field. Also, Mark May is a jack ass for implying that RN will put UCLA on probation within 2 years. Sorry, I’m filled with hate today. It must be because I was watching those classless, showboating Toejams play yesterday.

Tom @ 2:13 pm:

Richard, KNJ WANTED to come and coach the defense @ UCLA and offered his services to KD b4 he went to SCum…It was that KD idiot that said “No thanx” that he was offered a job @ SCum.

Lifelong Bruin fan @ 2:35 pm:

Bluebruin–Hear hear!!! Completely agree with you that we need to go with experience at both the DC and OC positions. I would love to see KNJ back but not as DC.

As to KNJ being a traitor–he wanted to coach at UCLA but Dorrell didn’t want to hire him (at least not as a paid coach). USC was willing to take him as an unpaid assistant. You can’t blame KNJ for wanting to establish his coaching career and taking this opportunity. I think if he is willing to come back to UCLA, especially if it is a lateral move, this would clearly demonstrate where his allegiance lies.

Dorrell Hates Me @ 2:42 pm:

Dewayne Talker,

You need to leave for a small school’s head coaching job, because I’m not going to keep you.

Maybe we will schedule your school next season for an easy win.

Rick

Gary @ 3:18 pm:

Does anyone know if we stand a “sniff” of a chance to get this QB transfer from Arkansas that wants to go to SC??? I hear rumor that Neu may have the ability to “sway” him UCLA’s way….please advise.

Keith @ 3:24 pm:

It would be in everyone’s best interest if DW stayed at UCLA. Our defense was ranked 30th in the nation which is a huge accomplishment with an offense ranked 98th. How much better would our defense had been with just an average offense? Let’s not be too quick to boot DW. Look who had the 3 top ranked defenses - Ohio St, USC, and LSU. Defense wins championships. We have a major rebuilding job (losing 8-9 key seniors from the defense) to do and we don’t need to start over with a new offensive and defensive coodinator. Rick can handle the offensive side of the ball but we need DW to bridge the gap on the defensive side of the ball.

Jim M @ 3:29 pm:

Boy oh boy, sounds like ol’ TJ Simers has his panties in a good ol’ fashioned ball up his ass. His article about our new Head Coach sitting in the stands yesterday with wanting eyes, a set of jail pinstripes, and only a dream of playing on New Years Day was pathetic. Sounds like TJ and all the other ragscribes at the Times just sound quite cranky from our Dorrell pressure. TJ, just face it, we kicked your ass on the Dorrell issue and the Bruins have begun a new era that seems to be worrying a few in South Central. God bless this country and our ability to speak out against people like you, TJ Simers.

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 3:42 pm:

Keith, I agree, but if DW is going to play games like this, then forget it. He can be a potential hinderance from which we’ll have a difficult recovering.

Ted H. @ 3:44 pm:

TJ Simers please go away!

Ted H. @ 3:47 pm:

While a very impressive victory over the Illini yesterday, USC needs to get some “winning with class” lessons. Very poor sportmanship after a few of their touchdowns. I am looking forward to beating the Trojans in the future. Go Bruins!

Vittaya @ 3:48 pm:

Ken would have taken any job that Dorrell offered… oh well that’s all in the past now. Come home Ken.

-Go Bruins

joe @ 3:51 pm:

Everyone is saying that Dorrell turned KN down…that’s not true. Dorrell offered KN a graduate assistant coaching position, but KN couldn’t get into graduate school. Then he went to USC and became a graduate assistant SC. He got into SC graduate school, couldn’t get into UCLA. Karl didn’t reject him, Pete Carroll did the same thing KD, offered him a grad assist. job….but because of UCLA academic standards he couldn’t get in, therefore couldn’t coach

Gary @ 3:57 pm:

Does anyone know if we stand a “sniff” of a chance to get this QB transfer from Arkansas that wants to go to SC??? I hear rumor that Neu may have the ability to “sway” him UCLA’s way….please advise.

Jaime @ 4:05 pm:

Finally we get the right coach to come in here and actually bring some life back to the program. One day after his first news conference as Head Coach, he is interviewed on national TV at the hated rival’s bowl game that just so happens to also be his home stadium. Who couldnt have asked for a better second day at the office. The process seemed to take too long and certain coaches were just not going to be a good fit. I did not know Temple even played football anymore after getting kicked out of the crappy big east conference. KN would be a good fit, he has experience, perhaps not as a DC but would be good to see him in blue again. I believe that UCLA is heading back in the direction it should be. Right back to compete against the best and bring a championship or two or more sometime soon. I wasnt around the last time UCLA won a championship in football, but i do remember all the rose bowls since the mid 70s. That was the game to play in and honestly it should still be the game to play in until there is a true playoff. Of course we all know, that wont happen and may not in our lifetime. So to all those sc players, fans, and band wagon jumpers (most of their fans are band wagon jumpers anyway) who did not even want to play in this years game, watch out, UCLA will be back and it wont take too long to beat them, win the conference, play in the Rose Bowl and just maybe play in and win a championship or two or more along the way. GO BRUINS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keith @ 4:13 pm:

Re: Mustain/Arkansas transfer - I don’ think UCLA has any chance. He is already enrolled at USC and will battle M. Sanchez for starting job. He sat out this year due to his transfer and it is highly doubtful he would transfer again. I don’t understand why Mustain chose SC in the first place. Sanchez is the heir apparent to Booty and that won’t change unless Sanchez gets hurt.

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 4:15 pm:

From what I understand, intraconference transfers will force you to sit out two years. This is part of the reason why Pete over-recruits so hard. Most of it is to take away big playmakers from other teams, more notably those inside the pac-10.

Ted H. @ 4:50 pm:

I believe that the freshman QB from Michigan (different style than Rich Rod’s offense) and the QB Coach may be coming to UCLA.

WHP '68 @ 5:19 pm:

“ATP @ 9:56 am:”

..thanks for your kind words. As you said, DD is the hero. If he pulls the plug, I’d be hoping he opts for another site so we can continue. abw.com anyone?

..but give BN a try; it’s a good clearing house on Bruin Athletics for folks with a similar mindset as this site.

Gary @ 5:32 pm:

thank you to those that cleared up the Arkansas QB situation.
Ted H…..your mouth to God’s ears…I hear the dude is awesome….6-7 265#….perfect!!!

Ted H. @ 6:04 pm:

Att Gary & Bruin Fans: The QB from Michigan is Ryan Mallett.

DigDog @ 6:27 pm:

Looks like www.dumpdorrell.com, having accomplished its mission, is becoming a snarky rumor site, a la TMZ and Matt Sludge. Sad. Time to go. But thanks for the great public service. I look forward to 25 years of WINNING with Rick Neuheisel.

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 6:39 pm:

INCIDENTALLY!!

Did any of you email Dan Guerrero and Chancellor Block? I emailed them right after Rick was hired. I congratulated them and thanked them.

We must email them in bad times and in good times. They deserve a congratulatory email.

Doug D @ 6:46 pm:

Tom, I don’t think you are thinking about what you are saying. KN is awesome and someone we definitely want back in the family. But he isn’t read to be the DC at a big school like UCLA. And yes, SC has been very successful but they were very successful for several years before KN went there as an unpaid assistant. Pete Carroll, their DC and their OC get the bulk of the credit for the success of their team. I’m sure KN was great to have around and helped the linebackers. But it is a long way from teaching a position to linebackers and becoming the DC and being totally responsible for the entire defensive scheme week after week. KN is just not ready for that yet. But I’m sure has learned a lot from Pete Carroll.

Jim @ 6:56 pm:

I go back to the Red Sanders days. At that time I was a U$C fan only because I lived near $C and the coliseum. When I graduated high school my parents could’nt afford to send me there so I, because of good grades, went to my now beloved UCLA. I have’nt in all these years been this excited over a new coach. Seeing him at the Rose Bowl yesterday was great. Also seeing him were all of the future football recruits. He is starting out showing his savvy. We got a good one.

buycker @ 7:19 pm:

ATP - just read your farewell. Keep up the good work, buddy,
you know your stuff!! I’m still thinking you may be a famous coach out here in the Inland Empire…..?

BruinBuddy @ 7:30 pm:

While we are discussingassistant coaches, maybe Rick can bring Jim Colletto home from doing time in Detroit. The more ex-Bruins on the staff the better. And Bob “Frigging Stiles” for a quality control coach would make my day.

James @ 7:48 pm:

I was one of those people who wrote to the chancellor to give him my 2 cents worth; happy to know it worked out so well. told him i had 2 degrees(BA and JD) and had been watching, following the football program since the time of Tommy Prothro.

a new era has arrived; go bruins

DumpDorrell @ 9:44 pm:

James … thank you for your contribution!!! We can see the light!
