LAT: DeWayne Walker Has Not Accepted Washington Offer
Rich Perelman of LAT delivers the news:
A source inside the UCLA football program spoke to defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker today and although Walker has been offered the Washington defensive coordinator position, he has not accepted it.
Walker and several other assistant coaches will meet with new head coach Rick Neuheisel tomorrow.
Unless he has some other program he is talking to, Walker will be our DC next season.

Lifelong Bruin fan @ 4:39 pm:
Nice interview of Neuheisel in the stands at the Rose Bowl, and happy to see that ABC thought it was important enough to interview him. Herbstreit comments that he thinks Walker will leave UCLA and Ken Norton Jr. will come to UCLA as the defensive coordinator. I have no idea if there is any truth to this but that’s a pretty interesting tidbit.
BruinBuddy @ 4:51 pm:
That would make my day. Norton is still the toughest man in LA and he makes his defensive units tough also.
Keith @ 9:06 pm:
If DW leaves, Ken Norton Jr. will not be our next Defensive Coordinator. If you ask the people who know USC football, they will tell you that Ken is a great guy with a lot of energy and enthusiasm but not a great coach yet.
Herbstreit was merely speculating.
ATP @ 9:29 pm:
Keith, yeah, for sure. Norton is a long way from being ready to be a defensive coordinator. He knows the linebacker position and he brings some enthusiasm and physicality to the table, but he still has a lot to learn. I hate to see him on the SC sideline, but I have a lot of confidence in Neuheisel’s ability to attract and hire quality coaches.
Gary @ 9:55 pm:
What does anyone know, if anything about Neuheisal’s ability to attract this Arkansas QB transfer that is suppossidly going to USC next year….on Norton…if you thought Walker could recruit…this guy would run circle saround Walker
ATP @ 10:09 pm:
Just an observation of note. June Jones brought his run and shoot offense to New Orleans tonight to play Georgia. Things aren’t working out so good. Georgia 38, Hawaii 3 going into the 4th. I sure hope DG was never seriously thinking about bringing that one dimensional stuff to town. Wow.

Tommy Bruin @ 12:54 am:
Hopefully Walker will leave and take Norvell and Scott with him. Let Neuheisel hire his own staff, we don’t want any leftovers from the Doofus era.
BruinBuddy @ 6:21 am:
Although Hawaii has some very talented players, the line matchups were not even close. Georgia’s linemen put a whipping on those big guys from Hawaii.
Jeff @ 7:56 am:
Wonder what was going through Neuheisel’s mind as he watched USC dismantle the ILL-ini? He’s going to need DW’s help so he can focus on the offense. What are the QB prospects going into ‘08? Anybody coming in that could make an immediate impact in Neu’s offense?
Big Dave @ 8:07 am:
Is there any chance we can get Norm Chow as our O-Coordinator? That would be great. I wouldn’t care if DW left. Just don’t hire KNorton as D Coordinator. I am slowly warming up to RN. I’m not in love with the choice but I liked his press conference. He has a likable personality. KD was so BORING and used ALL cliches possible.
alx324 @ 9:53 am:
Mitch Mustain is already at SC. He will be competing for the starting job next season. Since he has one season of pt as a starter as a freshman under his belt he probably will emerge as SCs starter for the 2008 season. I saw Mustain play in a few games with the Razorbacks he is the real deal.
alx324 @ 10:02 am:
ATP the only reason Hawaii got killed was the O-line you knew it was going to happen because teams in their conference were beating up Colt Brennan, June Jones has his work cut out for him he now knows if he didn’t before that he needs to recruit major talent for the o-line if he wants to run with the big dogs, but thats the run-shoot in a nut shell.
Fred @ 10:13 am:
Hopefully Walker has the wisdom not to jump on Washington’s sinking ship. To leave UCLA at this point for a one-and-done opportunity would be foolish.
RN is a smart guy. He wants Walker for the right reasons, not because he’s being forced to keep him. Hopefully DW stays, but if not, I think KN moves to the top of the list.
Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 10:38 am:
I think that we should not retain Walker. Regardless of what he feels about the Washington job, what he’s doing is very sub-par. This is ego defined. The offer at washington was presented more than a week ago. The UCLA job was given to RN almost a week ago. This whole notion that he has to weigh all of his options is ridiculous. He’s upset he wasn’t given the UCLA job, he likely had convinced himself that he would be given the job, he may have made some promises or some concessions believing he woudl be named Head Coach, and now he’s in a difficult position.
I don’t want him to stay, at this point. I wanted him to stay, if this would’ve been reconciled right away, but now that it isn’t, this truly suggests there can be an ego fight. UNSETTLING!
