DeWayne Walker Situation Fluid: Decision Coming Soon

As some have pointed out in the comments Tom Deinhart of Sporting News is reporting that DeWayne Walker has already signed a contract to be the next Washington defensive coordinator under head coach Ty Willingham who is on the hot seat.   In response, Brian Dohn used his very close ties to the Walker camp to write on his blog that a deal has yet to be consummated.  Who to believe?

Deinhart:

The University of Washington has hired UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker as its new defensive coordinator, Sporting News has learned.  Walker, who coached the Bruins in this season's Las Vegas Bowl in place of the fired Karl Dorrell, is replacing Karl Baer on Tyrone Willingham's staff.

Dohn's response:

There is a report by the Sporting News that DeWayne Walker accepted the Washington defensive coordinator position. Sources told me tonight it is heading in that direction, but nothing has been finalized.  I talked to Walker earlier and while he didn't want to comment on anything, he said nothing is done.

While Dohn's report is probably accurate (we haven't heard any official news to the contrary, nor any reports out of Seattle), the sense that we get is that Walker's ego is bruised.  The double-edged sword of playing to the media to get the HC job came back to hurt Walker.  He probably now believes the bogus press image he himself helped create that he was the next coming of Bear Bryant.   No one else bought the image and came begging for him to be their head coach, surprisingly, and only Washington with a lame duck coach, has even talked to him about their DC position.  So Walker could get stuck childishly trying to defend his ego and take that nowhere job in Washington.  What a huge mistake that could be.  We hope we are wrong.

Anyhow, until we know further it appears this situation is still fluid.  Still, we expect a decision soon.  And for those emotional blowhards in a panic over possibly losing the only person who could ever take UCLA to glory, pay them no mind.   There are other great defensive coordinators out there and other great players that want to play for UCLA.    Our football program's future does not depend on one defensive coordinator that got blown out by Utah.   Peace … Go Bruins!

Bye bye DW…and don’t let the blue & gold door hit you on the way out! Take your “defensive prowess” with you to the losing situation awaiting you at U-Dub! See you on the unemployment line next year when Jim Mora Jr. (a defensive specialist) takes over the reins at UW, and cleans house. What will all of his super recruits do then…leave and join him elsewhere?

Dana @ 1:21 pm:

As much as we may have not wanted Walker for the HC, its time to put this childish nonsense to rest and welcome him back to the fold. Walker leaving would be a loss to the program- he stabilized the defense, where he did an overall good job, and was fantastic in recruiting.

ATP @ 1:25 pm:

Hey, Dana, its Walker who needs to embrace the program and the changes that have taken place. Neuheisel already extended himself. I’m willing to “welcome Walker back to the fold” if Rick sincerely wants him. But, let’s hear from Walker. Do you want the DC position, or not? Don’t keep threatening to leave just to elicit bowing and scraping on our part. Jump on board or get off.

Louis @ 1:39 pm:

Dana I disagree with you about Walker. I think his leaving to Washington would be good for Rick. If he stay’s he may cause a split of loyalty among the player’s who wanted him as Head coach. Defense was our strength but not that great. I hope Neuheisel can hire a solid DC and hires the assistant coaches he wants on his staff, not what the administration, player’s or AD demand he keep.

DumpDorrell @ 2:09 pm:

Dana … we are reporting our opinion of the situation based on the fact that Walker promoted himself. No other candidate did. Walker even had his brother go on a website promoting Walker to throw insults at his competitor for the position. Interviewing with Willingham moments after interviewing with Chancellor Block and then publicizing that through the press is another calculated move on his part. It all may have backfired. And now he may even take the Udub job, which would be a huge mistake. You can interpret these events differently but we are calling it how we see it. Whomever Rick decides to hire is ok with us, be it Walker or not. Neu has the success to be able to call his shots and earn our support.

alx324 @ 2:32 pm:

the only person that should be let go is Norvell. As far as the other positions I’m sure RN has a short list of positions coaches some with ties to the nfl and some probably for his stay at Colorado & Washington. I think that DW stays and pretty much everyone on the defensive side of the ball.

Big Moe @ 3:31 pm:

If Walker wants to leave, he’s a grown man, and should make that decision himself. No one’s ragging on Walker, her seems to be digging his own hole….especially if he goes to a bad situation at U-Dub. Yes, I believe he’s done a pretty good job as DC (albeit a few bad games mixed in), however, I’d try to lock him in to our program for the next couple of years. That’s his decision, not Rick’s. As far as the other assistants, get rid of most of them… Bring back Ken Norton Jr. into the fold as linebackers’ coach!

Brewnz @ 4:38 pm:

DW is butt hurt and needs to get over it. Got to hand it to Nue (and UCLA)for being patient and being the bigger man in this.

BruinBuddy @ 5:00 pm:

What do you think of the soon unemploeyed Ron English the DC at Michigan, He will not have his contract renewed by Rich Rodrigues because Rich wants his own guys. Tebow may have put up 35 points but most of those came from the interceptions that Henne threw. Those defensive stands at the end shows that English knows how to stop the passing game.

English has improved that Michigan defense from day one and he has always had stellar defenses that “PROGRESS” all season long and do not regress.

English is a Pomona guy and can recruit well here, he has been bringing California players back to Michigan for several years.

Best yet, he is a Rick Neuheisel fan, hes said that long before this job came up.

Glenn BRUIN Nicol @ 5:02 pm:

I would love for Walker to stay…….he honestly did a good job and is a good fit for the program. However, if he leaves, bring back Ken Norton as Defensive Coordinator and the defense will not miss a beat. Herbstreit commented today at halftime that he thought that would happen, that Norton would be the DC next year at UCLA. Either way, that would be good. I am sure Norton and RN would be able to sway most of the recruits to stay, as Norton and his 4 super bowl rings must carry some weight. Either way, we’ll be just fine.

buycker @ 5:05 pm:

That was a great little film tribute to RN and KD at the Rose Bowl today. And a good interview with RN in the stands.
Nice to see ABC is on top of things!!

Louis @ 7:29 pm:

I don’t think we should worry about position coach and traitor Ken Norton comimg back to Ucla. This is one of the clowns whopping it up more than necessary when Sc pasted us back in 05. F)%#k him. I hope he is on the SC sideline when Neuheisel has the player’s to avenge that horrible day. Yes as a lifetime Bruin fan I’am bitter and will never forget Norton, Carroll and the rest of the Sc sideline happy to pour it on Ucla 66-19. How dare you Glenn bruin and anyone else thinking it’s ok to bring back a traitor like Ken Norton Jr. Remember the great Jackie Robinson, who happened to be a UCLA graduate, retiring when he was traded to the Giants grom the Dodgers. Now that’s loyalty. F%$k Norton and Henry Bibby for choosing USC our biggest rival to coach against UCLA.

Louis @ 7:41 pm:

I’am really pissed off at all of you who think it’s ok to take back this whore traitor Norton Jr. I dare anyone of you to give me or other 100% loyal Bruin fans a rational reason why we should welcome a traitor back to the Bruin family that they betrayed and I do not care if it’s because the previous coach Dorrell did not give them a job. That is not a good enough reason to betray your school. Wake up people! Rick Neuheisel has drawn the battle lines and the biggest obstacle in our way now that we have a real coach, is to beat Usc. The losses to WSU and Utah are over! SC needs their asses kicked by UCLA and nothing less will do! Boy do I feel better now. Happy New Year everyone who doesn’t want whore Norton to comeback.

alx324 @ 11:02 pm:

wasn’t it dorrell that turned his back on Norton Jr?

If your girlfriend/ wife / significant other / loved one screws you over and then smacks you in the face, what would you do? Two options; either hang your head and cry, or go bang that slut she’s always hated/ her best friend/ even her sister… Ken did the latter.

Uh, hypothetically speaking, of course.

Norton was shown the door on his way out by Dumbell. WE TURNED OUT BACKS ON HIM!!! If he is gracious enough to entertain the invitation to come back, then I think we should embrace him and apologize to him for not allowing him to be a part of the UCLA family. AGAIN, PomPom figured out a way to get KNJ onto his staff when there were no positions available (he made him a graduate assistant and promptly promoted to an assitant position the following year). Why didn’t Dorrell offer the same?! Again, we turned out back on him…he should be one of the first to be considered for a job on the staff….WHY COULDN’T WE FIND A JOB FOR HIM IN THE MORGAN CENTER UNTIL A SPOT OPENED UP?!
