Neu Era Or … Neuclear Era?

Dan Guerero and Chancellor Gene Block's choice for head coach of our football team has the nation talking about UCLA football again.  The search itself, which we will get to in a day or so, had UCLA football in the news often (some good, some bad).   As we said a week ago, the media is not going to give Neu the goodwill they were dying to give DeWayne Walker for 5 years.  The goodwill the media gave Karl Dorrell even this past horrendous year will dwarf the goodwill Neu will get his first year.  Guaranteed.

How do we know this?  Remember Brian Dohn's threat to Dan Guerrero and UCLA if we hired Neu??  That was before we hired him.  Now that we have, half the reports out there in the beat press, the national press, the sport talk radio, etc., are about Neu being radioactive.  Here is just a sampling, the full articles are in some cases much worse:

  • Bill Plaschke LAT: "If he strays, then the entire program goes bankrupt."  "Yeah, Mr. Clean just hired a guy once known as "Slick Rick.""
  • TJ Simers LAT: "WHO FACES NCAA sanctions first? USC, which is waiting to hear what the NCAA has to say about Reggie Bush, or UCLA under Neuheisel?"
  • Michael Ventre MSNBC (SuC grad):  "Welcome to the 2008 UCLA production of “Faust,” starring Dan Guerrero as the title character and Rick Neuheisel as Mephistopheles, a.k.a. the Devil." "(Guerrero) hired Neuheisel, whose name has become synonymous in college football with chicanery. Neuheisel isn’t evil, merely cunning. He isn’t dirty, merely sneaky. He isn’t a felony waiting to happen, but he is a full rap sheet of misdemeanors."

Were there similar reports when Eric Scott was kept on at UCLA after being nationally ridiculed for being arrested for felony robbery??  And having, as we later found out, 3 convictions for unregistered weapons and disturbing the peace??  No. Instead we got a beautiful redemption piece by Brian Dohn, and charges dropped pieces from the rest of the beat press.  Nary a word after.

Yet, Rick Neuheisel hasn't been afoul of the NCAA for over 5 years (as the PR said, some of his infractions were a decade ago) and even those infractions were all minor. Neu was young when he committed them and now he is older, wiser, repentant, and committed to doing things right - basically all the things we would want in a human being let a lone a coach - and the press still want to crucify him??  The beat press is swallowing their 2nd bitter pill this month, the first with the firing of their guy Karl Dorrell and the second with the non-hiring of their guy DeWayne Walker.  They are mad and want to take it out on us and Neu.

We will repeat again, Rick Neuheisel will not get the goodwill he deserves as new head coach.  Next season, we lose 17 starters and 25 seniors, practically every one on the field will be new to the position.  We have a much tougher schedule.  You all know this because we have been writing about this since early in the '06 season.  We said at the time and since that any coach will be lucky to get this team to .500.  Brian Dohn said the same thing, and we put it here on the record.  He was undoubtedly convinced at the time that his 2nd guy Walker (Dorrell was his first) would get the job so he was making sure Walker had support already for next season.  Neu won't get the benefit of such wisdom next year or ever, unless he starts winning titles and even then he will not get the benefit of fair treatment by some.

Rick Neuheisel has a big challenge ahead of him that Karl Dorrell did not have and DeWayne Walker would not have had.  He has to fight the press from Day 1.  We think Neu will overcome this challenge but it is not fair to him, to UCLA football or to UCLA.  The press is ready to pounce on him and turn his tenure into a Neuclear era.  Hacks like Simers, Plaschke and Dohn are renegades who will search long and hard for that uranium … it will sell papers and keep their paychecks coming.  One spec is all they need to torch Neu and blow up his tenure.  With the myraid of rules and compliance procedures there is not a coach or program in America that is not absolutely clean.  It's impossible.  That is why programs have compliance officers whose full time job is to check the rules and procedures on everything every staff member and player does.  That is why the Washington compliance officer got the NCAA tournament pool rule wrong after Neu ASKED the officer for the ruling on it.  That is why Neu WON a $4.5 million settlement against both Washington AND the NCAA.

We are not at a stage in societal development where we have a noble and ethical press.  The press has no checks or balances.  We aren't just talking with football obviously. But specifically with Rick Neuheisel and our football program, it is a shame that the "fair and balanced" press is anything but already.   Nevertheless, Rick Neuheisel has the support of so many alumni and fans.  We believe that he will get the job done, and he has already brought great excitement to Bruin football again … at long last.  We can't wait until September. Go Bruins!!!

FUSC @ 12:37 pm:

Fuck those bitter writers. Good post DD good job on the whole website and thanks for the hard work you put in. Your goal and every true UCLA fans goals have been reached a GREAT coach with fire excitement and expirence. Those idiots won’t be talking shit in 2 years when we are playing in the Rose Bowl and SuC is in a crappy bowl. Maybe Neu is gonna be neuclar and SC will get destroyed by the once again Mighty Bruins

Dana Pt Bruin @ 1:36 pm:

Neuclear Era Begins Now…DD group. I think you all realize that a long hard battle for years has been finally won. But remember somthing. This battle lasted for years, the DD site is closing down for good. But the WAR still has to be fought and won. Rick Neuheisel needs and deserves all our help and support in the future seasons. Please let us all be there for him and defend him on the negative sports pages that are sure to come. Go Blue and Gold…Bruins !!!!

DumpDorrell @ 1:43 pm:

Dana PT … Excellent point! We will be sure and address that before we sign off.

BruinFan1980 @ 2:30 pm:

As soon as the SUC game ended, I told all 25 SC and Bruin fans gathered to watch the game the Neuheisel was the right coach for the program and he would become the coach. Most everyone scoffed at my suggestion.

In fact I only had one supporter. My friend Mike A. coached one of the lineman Nick Ekabatini in JC. He played center for the Marshall Faulk led SDSU teams, NY Giants and NFL Europe. He also coached and played a big role in USC lineman Fred Matua’s life.

So Mike knows football. It has come to pass that everything he said that night about Neuheisal being the right coach has come true. That he is a great recruiter, coaches great teams, offensive players want to play for him, NFL experience, can match Carroll’s personality. Most importantly he is an alumni who wants to be here.

TO GIVE NEUHEISAL THE SUPPORT HE DESERVES I IMPLORE THIS WEBSITE TO SWITCH TO “SUPPORTNEUHIESAL.COM”. AS A COLLECTIVE VOICE WE CAN COUNTERACT THE MEDIA BIAS THAT IS FORMING AGAINST COACH SLICK RICK BEFORE HE EVEN STEPS UP TO THE MICROPHONE TO ADDRESS THEM.

PatG. @ 2:31 pm:

DD: especially excellent points regarding the crying of the beat press. However, you failed to highlight the most pathetic of all articles in today’s papers–the one written by Paul Oberjuerge. You might recall that several days ago Paul cemented his impartiality in our minds by unequivocally stating “RN is the expedient choice, but DW is the right one.” His piece today was little more than a toddler’s tirade. He didn’t get his way, so now he has to pout. Doesn’t this guy have an editor preventing drivel like this from actually being printed? I’ve never seen such a distortion of facts and not-so-nuanced accusations presented as a legitimate sports column. What unabashed bitterness. We should not forget this childishness as a proxy for how many in the local press feel now that their collective idol, DW, was not chosen. How dare DG not follow their advice.
RN was not my first choice, but now that he’s been selected it seems only fair to support him until and unless he demonstrates such support is undeserved. Hurling invective like Oberjuerge’s is another example of why so many of us have lost faith in the beat press’s ability to understand what this website was all about. Shame on him and his inflated ego. Can you imagine Jim Murray stooping to this level?
Time to put away the swords. Good Luck, Rick.

mark @ 2:35 pm:

I wanted to thank the DD website and group for providing me with several months of up to the minute news, viewpoints and entertainment. I will miss this website. I am very happy with the Neuheisel hire, and I can’t wait for next season to begin. And I think bringing up RN’s past is going to get old pretty soon (if not already), so I’m not at all worried about the press. I hope you all enjoy the off-season, and in the meantime, go Bruins basketball!!

buycker @ 3:44 pm:

In all fairness to Pete Carroll, I doubt if he’s quaking in his boots over the RN hire. BUT, that day may certainly come. In the meantime, I think his two greatest fears are Jim Harbough and Reggie Bush’s ongoing NCAA investigation.
:-)

Brewnz @ 4:21 pm:

I say who cares. RN has all the support he needs in us. And I’ll say this much. There will be one incident that NCAA, PAC10 and UCLA will investigate because of this idiot media crying foul. But rest assured, that long wait to hire him included planning possible responses from all parties involved to this probable scenario. I wouldn’t be surprise the NCAA “backing up” RN, when these jackals try to exploit RN’s situation. Our coach and our football program will persevere. This a great time in UCLA and rubbers, ducks, and bears beware.

Jim @ 5:09 pm:

It’s been very interesting following this site. It brought a lot of us together. Thanks DD and the rest of you great Bruin fans and alumni. Happy New Year. UCLA fight fight fight.

Big Moe @ 5:45 pm:

Aloha DD…you have indeed made history in our football department! Part of the problem with the vitriol directed towards Rick (and indirectly towards us), is the fact that “writers” like Doh!n can’t deal with the fact that there are other venues for people to find their news, and state their opinions, and make change happen. Years ago, this would never have happened (Terry Donahue for 20 years?!), however, in the age of the internet and blogging, things happen without the “mainstream media”. That’s what’s killing these guys (and gals). Yes, their stuff makes it to the internet, however for the most part, what they wrote (until the explosion of the internet not too many years ago) in the papers was followed and unquestioned. They can’t get over the fact that they have become more and more irrelevant, and are having hissy fits over that irrelevancy! We know the media won’t give Rick a fair shake, and yes, Eric Scott should have been booted from our staff a long time ago…but not according to Doh!n and the rest of the media idiots! He was one of Dorrell’s guys…that’s why they gave him close to a free pass. We also know that this upcoming season will be tough (with road games at Cal, at Oregon, at Arizona State). If Dorrell/Walker were as great as they all say, with all these teams and more in home games (don’t forget the Notre Dame debacle), we should have done better than 6-7. Oh well…give it a little time. I know the whole attitude will now change - especially with SUC getting closer to major probation over Reggie Bush (I forgot, Pete Carroll and staff knew “nothing” about all that!). DD & Company…I SALUTE YOU FOR YOUR TREMENDOUS EFFORTS!!

Big Moe @ 5:50 pm:

By the way…Rick’s firing from U-Dub (and rightful $4.5 million settlement) was done by Barbara Hedges (check spelling?). Guess where Barbara was before becoming President of U-Dub…yep…SUC. A little conflict of interest, perhaps :)

JoeBruin @ 6:10 pm:

In the hiring of RN as HC, one should remember the principle in whaling “when you see water raising, harpoon it”. Such are the efforts of the bias media and soured alums.

Art Bruin @ 6:19 pm:

Congratulations to Rick Nuehisel and welcome home! There is already excitment back in BruinNation. I expect a little concern across town already with this hire because now we have a coach who is not going to be timid and will stand out. I believe the recruits across the nation will want to play this coach and take chances to be successful. Rather than holding it close to the vest we can look forward to an exciting brand of football from an offensive standpoint. Let’s keep DW as he will be a vital part of the staff and has proven his worth be bringing touch nosed defensive football to UCLA. This could be a beautiful relationship that will bring championships back to UCLA. Go Bruins!!!

Doug D @ 8:09 pm:

Reggie Bush was dealing with a wanna be agent, driving a nice car, and his parents living in a big house for free. Does anyone truly believe that Pete Carroll and the rest of his staff knew nothing of this? Please.

buycker @ 8:21 pm:

Exactly. Selective chastisement at its best. When the SC program gets nailed, will Mike May and the beat press back off?

BruinBuddy @ 8:37 pm:

The NCAA will eventually trim that plume right off the trojan helmet. When it happens the local press will be defensive for that jackass Bush who knew exactly what he was doing getting involved. And nobody can tell me that the rest of USC should not get punished for that, they all sat by and let it happen because nobody tells their stars what to do.

Bruce Nagy @ 9:06 pm:

Really good stuff…..newspapers in general, and the LA Times in particular, are really irrelevant and dying. It’s PC reporting. The thing is: I really don’t think Rick Neuheisel gives a rip. I did read Plashke’s column in total and it wasn’t really that bad…what he said to RN is : You have been given the chance of a lifetime, don’t blow it. Ya know what’s funny about the “Slick” name….Bill Clinton’s nickname is “Slick Willie”…..guess what? Every writer at the LA Times thinks he’s the best President ever and wants him and his wife back in the White House…… so when it’s Slick Willie nailing every female that moves, that’s okay…but when “Slick Rick” calls a recruit during the dead period, he should be indicted!

Doug D @ 9:20 pm:

Funny post, Bruce!

The problem with writers is that they feel they know more than the average person and that their opnion is somehow more valid than people who are not writers. I’m sorry, but getting a degree in journalism and learning the difference between their, there and they’re, and to, too and two, does not necessarily equate to superior knowledge in whatever field you are writing about.

BruinBuddy @ 9:41 pm:

I would rather see the local sports writers do something constructive with their time. Maybe a comparison of hot dogs from one college stadium to another would be nice?

J.J. @ 9:45 pm:

just read on mobile.latimes.com the Neuheisel wants Walker to stay as D.C. and get this……..he is also gonna try to get Norm Chow to be the offensive coordinator! I know its a little early and nothing in by any means for certain, but can any of us imagine or even fathom a coaching staff of R.N. Walker and N.Chow!!!!???? it would be effing’ unbelievable!!!! let’s pray for this trio Bruin fans!!!!!!!! you will see this in the L.A.Times in tomorrows sports section! Ucla football is exciting again! Go Bruins!!!!!!!!!!!!

buycker @ 9:59 pm:

Sounds good, too good to be true, but can they afford Chow too? I’d prefer to see RN, Chow and Ken Norton Jr. I’m thinking Walker is heading north to join TW.

Louis @ 10:01 pm:

Ucla is already better with RN as coach, but if Walker stays and Chow comes back to exact a little revenge against happy Pete, SC will no longer dominate this town without a real good fight and some losses against Ucla. I’m still pissed at the way they whopped it up in 05 when they beat us 66-19. I hope someday soon we can return the favor by a similar type score. Preferably at the Coliseum; the scene of the crime in 05.

buycker @ 10:11 pm:

Yes, I’ll never forget Pete saying in a post-game interview that he was “just letting the kids have a little fun today”
…at our frickin expense!! Big mistake. But what the heck, the 06 game, KD’s finest moment, was pretty good payback. It still feels good.

BruinBuddy @ 10:43 pm:

I truly don’t see DW or Chow working with Rick. There is just not enough money to pay them all. But there are plenty of good assistants around; especially Ron English DC, Dave Adolph DC, the SMU offensive coordiator is awesome and so is the OC from Tulsa.

BuckeyeBruin @ 11:34 pm:

I’ll never forget or forgive USC for that ‘05 game. Unfortunately I was there and the SC fans were so obnoxious I vowed never to return to the Coliseum. However I’ve since changed my mind because I plan to go in September and hopefully watch Ohio State beat those jerks on their home turf.

Go Buckeyes!! Go Bruins!!

John W. Reagan @ 12:21 am:

At UCLA Neuheisel hasn’t talked to a recruit, had a single practice, or coached a down of football and the press is ready to pounce? WTF? I wish the media was so tough with Dorrell. By 2009 Neuheisel will have UCLA in the hunt for the Pac-10 title, and by 2011 we will have made a run, or bagged a national championship. Yes, you heard it hear first. Do what you do Mr. Neuheisel!

whp '68 @ 7:32 am:

In the words of Edward J. Olmos/Jaime Escalante in the movie Stand and Deliver:

“You are the true dreamer..”

You dared to dream and make this site a haven for all of us UCLA fans who wanted the mediocrity to cease. I am personally grateful to you and your efforts and look forward to participating in your future endeavors to support Rick Neuheisel. May I suggest registering PumpNeuheisel.com as a site name.

whp '68 @ 8:21 am:

“A gambling, lying cheater will not restore what little glory your Wetwood [sic] football team had. RN cheated at UW, Colorado, and probably cheats on his wife.”

Feebowitz, you sanctimonious piece of bovine fecal matter, when you get a chance, learn to read and do adequate research:

“Yet, Rick Neuheisel hasn’t been afoul of the NCAA for over 5 years (as the PR said, some of his infractions were a decade ago) and even those infractions were all minor.”

May I suggest the this piece as a primer on the sour grapes that you espouse and this piece on the $4.5 million settlement in his lawsuit with the NCAA and U of W.

It was a settlement in which the NCAA and U of W were attempting to prove Neuheisel’s gambling violated their rules ex post facto. They sensed that the jury was going sideways on them and they ponied up (i.e., what’s it going to take to make this go away?) U of W paid $700,000 to him in cash and forgve a $1.5 million loan. The NCAA paid $2.5 million in cash. If you read the article (and other articles on the lawsuit) you will see that Neuheisel stood to make a great deal more when (not if) he won. To paraphrase “Class of 66″ on BN (an experienced lawyer), there have been smaller settlements in wrongful death suits.

And, while we’re on the subject of cheating, you might want to take a look at what goes on over at at the University of Soiled Condoms to keep the South Central police blotter full:

http://www.bruinsnation.com/story/2006/6/26/113925/426

..next time, bring facts with you, blockhead.

alx324 @ 10:11 am:

I thought Edward J. Olmos ” Vato loco is qoing to kick USC in the culo”

john c scalia, sr. @ 10:35 am:

Ok. i’ve been wanting Neuheisel for over a year. If Walker had been given the job, i would not renew my season seats.
Maybe Rick should simply start pronouncing his name correctly–neu is german for new and is pronounced “noi” rather than “new”. sports writers are so illiterate that they’d probably figure it was a different guy.
go bruins.

Bruce Nagy @ 10:37 am:

I think the competition for DW may not come from Washington, but I have read that LSU, whose defense really sank at year’s end; Michigan, where Ron English was fired (and appears headed for Louisville) and possibly Arkansas, where the REAL SLICKSTER (Petrino) is are interested. If RN wants to keep him - and I believe he does — he’ll name him Ass’t HC/Recruiting and give him a nice raise. But we all know the money that an LSU or Michigan will throw around. If DW is thinking clearly, he knows that Willingham is in trouble and the Jim Mora Jr. vultures are circling. Evidently, UWub’s President wanted Ty gone, but relented. Then, the AD, who hired Ty, quit in protest. I also know this: I’m not ready to throw next season to the wolves yet….yea, a lot of seniors are gone but on the defensive side you’ve got guys like Harwell (pray for his knee) Price and Moline on the D-Line; Carter, the Bosworth’s, Hale at LB and Verner is a STUD and on offense, Bell (pray for his knee) really showed me something and I think Olson and Cowan will be reborn with quality QB coaching - just too bad they are seniors……BUT, Fresno, Tennessee and at BYU….geez!

ATP @ 10:53 am:

To loosely paraphrase a quote from Neuheisel yesterday:

……We need a running game. In the Pac-10 you have to be able to control the clock with a ground game at times. In my fourth year at Washington, we got away from the running game a bit and we paid the price for it.

In my opinion, Leach and Jones would have gone the other direction.

This is a great sign. It means Rick has been watching. It shows he knows the Pac-10. It also means he has learned from his mistakes. Expect to see some heavy duty backs lining up to come to UCLA along with pro-style passing QB’s like Nick Crissman.

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 10:57 am:

Bruce Nagy @ 9:06 pm:
Really good stuff…..newspapers in general, and the LA Times in particular, are really irrelevant and dying. It’s PC reporting. The thing is: I really don’t think Rick Neuheisel gives a rip.

I disagree completely, Bruce. HE BETTER GIVE A RIP!! And personally, I feel that he does give a rip: A HUGE RIP! And I wouldn’t have it any other way. This is rick coming full circle. Underestimated and dissed from day one at UCLA. No greater motivation than to shut these mofos up!

ATP @ 10:59 am:

I’m sorry for my earlier post. I did’t realize that DD had posted Neuheisel’s exact quote regarding the running game. I guess I’ll have to start reading before I start commenting.

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 11:01 am:

I, too, heard about the Norm Chow for O.C. strategy. I don’t know if he’ll take a demotion in salary. His desire to return to So. Cal will have to be significant in order for this move to happen. He’s making one million in Tenn, but maybe his desire to return to L.A. is significant. Allegedly, his wife really wants him home more often, and a college job in the city is precisely the best route.

UCLA does have money. Rick took the job for less than he would’ve been paid at SMU. 1.25 Mill isn’t that much $$. I think that reduction has very much to do with leaving a balance of $$ to go after bigger named Assistants, Chow included. Still, it will be a pay cut for Chow, but one that could make sense for other reasons outside of money.

alx324 @ 11:33 am:

$1,200,000 is a lot of money Bluebruin (AKA Diego).

ATP @ 11:38 am:

Regarding the Chow rumors, if he wants to move back to the LA area, where he maintains a home, and money is not an issue, I suppose there is a chance. I don’t know what Chow has in his head regarding his relationship with Carroll, but if there is something personal that grates on Chow, who knows? He may want to be a thorn in Carroll’s side.

However, if Chow doesn’t come to UCLA, I hope there isn’t too much concern. Neuheisel isn’t going to hire some meat head as OC.

As far as Walker goes, I still don’t think its a good idea to have him on staff. I think he is a decent DC, but Ron English, among others, would bring the same intensity and recruiting prowess to the staff. If Rick wants Walker, and wasn’t pressured in any way to retain him, sure, go for it. However, it will be up to Walker to prove he is part of the team. We can’t afford to have a coach who is bitter at being passed over for the HC job going half speed or somehow sabotaging the HC’s efforts in even the smallest way.

Neuheisel said, when he was at Colorado and Washington, he was going 100 mph with no brakes. I’m excited because everything I hear indicates he is already going 85 mph after only one day on the job at UCLA. The difference being, he’s downshifting and tapping the brakes this time.

alx324 @ 11:39 am:

Maybe the reason the Bruins gave Neuheisel 1.2 mil was so they can give Chow 1 mil to be the oc and give Walker a pay raise to stay with the team as dc.

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 1:04 pm:

Alx324, not in today’s market for what’s supposed to be a top BCS conference Job. All top-4 BCS conference teams pay considerably more than 1.2 Mill. Put it this way; Chris Petersen is going to make the same amount of money in Boise. SMU was going to pay Rick more, but he turned them down. Duke was going to pay rick more and is paying their new hire more.

Rick is likely taking less money to have monehy to spend on the assistants.

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 1:07 pm:

alx, what you just wrote is exactly what I was speculating in my previous post.

alx324 @ 2:20 pm:

which post were you refering to? May hanging on jockstraps or something else? (lol)

alx324 @ 8:17 pm:

EVERY ONE AT DOUBLE D HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!

BruinBuddy @ 10:11 pm:

I was told that on a trojan site, the addition of Chow to Rick’s staff will not happen because he will be eligible for a NFL pension after two more seasons in the NFL. I had a talk with a ex-nfl player friend and asked hin about how much money would be involved in the Chow pension with that, He adised me it would mean abot $90.00 a month after social security at age 70. So we can assume the pension factor will not be a big issue.
