San Diego Tribune: Mike Martz
Update: Fast and furious. ProFootballTalk notes that Mike Martz is rumored to be out as Detroit Lions OC:
A league source tells us in response to our item regarding the potential departure of offensive coordinator Mike Martz in Motown that Martz will be out, and that his potential replacement already has been lined up.
We won't put too much stock into this new report since it doesn't sound like anything more than a rumor. And we know what columnists' rumors are worth. But it bears noting that columnist Nick Canepa of the San Diego Union Tribune is reporting that former Ram HC Mike Martz "will be the next UCLA football coach:"
Word on the street is that Mike Martz (Madison High) will be the next UCLA football coach, replacing fellow San Diegan Karl Dorrell (Helix High). Martz, current offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions and former Rams head coach, no doubt would bring some excitement to that program.
A passing wizard, Martz worshipped at the altar shared by Don Coryell and Ernie Zampese (Zampese expanded Air Coryell into an aeronautical conglomerate). UCLA can use some football pizzazz . . .
High school quarterbacks, I would guess, should be attracted to Martz, who likes to get the ball downfield . . .
It makes sense. UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero really has put this thing off, and for what? He's waiting for the end of the NFL regular season.
The reason this doesn't hold water is because Canepa is going all the way in saying that Martz will be the next coach. If that is true, then why is Guerrero still scheduling interviews? Doesn't hold water. It would have more credibility if he said Martz is being interviewed.
Anyhow, what's another name thrown into the mix mean?? It means no one still has any clue who will be our next HC. If indeed DG interviews Mike Riley, Mike Martz, Jim Fox, June Jones, and Mike Leach then you have to say DG comes out looking pretty thorough. As of right now, we don't know that he has interviewed any of them. He could within the next week. Interesting times ahead.

Guerrero is looking for the best person. Get the best head coach and give Dwayne Walker one heck of a raise to stay on as defensive coordinator. Yes, I hate the wait too. He should have this done by next week.

This report about Martz doesn’t seem credible so far unless we get some further information.
First of all, how would Canepa know anything about UCLA football. He’s a SD reporter, who covers SD sports. If he was talking about SDSU, then I might give him the benefit of the doubt.
And, I can’t see Martz being interested in college football. At some point, Martz might get another HC job in the NFL.

The Vegas line against DG getting this right is at 300 to 1 and climbing. I loved UCLA and DG getting dissed by ESPN on the half time show of the WF vs Uconn game this morning. I need a scotch, in fact make that a double! On a side note: the Orleans Sports book doesn’t post the best lines, the Palms and the Wynn are much more aggressive. Also, thank you to Oregon State for covering last night.

BN seems to think all this interviewing by both DG and Block may be to at least partially start lining up some OC and DC candidates for the eventual HC. Could the administration be reacting to the debacle over Eric Scott, where they didn’t know his past and got egg on their collective faces? Just a thought.

We wanted someone with the charisma, personaltiy and pizazz to compete with Carroll. Someone who can coach with the enthusiasm as Carroll. Someone who can recruit with Carroll. We got him.

Dream Job, that’s what sealed it for me. Neuheisel WANTS to be at UCLA, much like Howland. We now have two caches that have no desire to go anywhere else…

RN Bring back Tom Cable for oc. The only time the offense kicked ass was when TC was running the offense. The years prior to and after the offense sputtered. The only reason he left UCLA for the nfl was because they offered more money.And he’s not an oc he is an offensive line coach.
