Dump Dorrell

Evening Update

Much to report. Many of you know that it is official now, DeWayne Walker interviewed with Washington for their defensive coordinator position, Perelman

UCLA interim head coach DeWayne Walker met with Washington head coach Tyrone Willingham yesterday here in Los Angeles. Our source said that Willingham "will do whatever it takes" to get Walker to shore up the Husky defensive unit.

That being said, Washington has no history of paying its assistants anywhere near the $300,000-plus that Walker is getting currently, and he will get a raise if he stays at UCLA as the new head coach or the defensive coordinator. Willingham is currently paid $1.4 million per season.

If DeWayne REALLY wanted this job at UCLA .. a HC position(!) … his first(!) … then tell us why he is interviewing for a DC position with a program about to fire its head coach the same day he interviews with Chancellor Block?!  This is a bluff that DG should call straight up.  See ya DeWayne.  What an enormously poor decision it would be for DeWayne to go to another program on the brink of collapse … with a prodigal son, Mora Jr., waiting in the wings to pick up the pieces as new head coach.  Not going to happen.  And if it does, well then we have our final confirmation that Walker is not ready to be a head coach, and may not ever be.

Moving along, as we have said, DG must be interviewing other candidates because he has not obviously announced a decision.  Today its coming out in the press, Dohn:

Several sources told me over the last two days that UCLA is still looking at candidates, and is not done with the interview process.

Well that's obvious.  If there are no other secret candidates (who have bowl or playoff games) the decision would have been announced.    Oddly, the NYT is still throwing Herm Edward's name out there as a candidate, but we think that is highly unlikely. Nevertheless, he did not deny.

Finally, Karl Dorrell is being listed as a candidate for the Houston Texan's offensive coordinator position under head coach Gary Kubiak, who was the OC at the Denver Broncos when Dorrell was the receivers coach there.  Kubiak needs to replace Mike Sherman who recently became the new head coach at Texas A&M.  If Karl gets the job, we save 2 large ones.  Good luck Karl!

JRBruin @ 7:50 pm:

I’m no DW apologist, but I don’t think it’s fair to ream him for simply interviewing with UW. There could be plenty of reasons, the one I’m hoping for is that it’s been made clear to DW that he’s not going to get the HC job.
Even if that’s not the case, it’d be prudent for him to take that interview. Afterall, if he doesn’t get the HC job, there’s at least a 50% chance that he’s out as DC as well.
Heck, we’re all pointing out what DW probably knows. DG hasn’t hired a coach, obviously he’s not satisfied with his two choices. DW is no dummy, the more time that passes, the less likely it is that he gets this gig - better to cover all the bases and at least have a job lined up if things don’t pan out.

colonybruin @ 7:54 pm:

al golden’s excuse was . . “we are on the brink of something truly special here at Temple” __ you noticed that al baby . . never mentioned , just what this ” truly something special” was ___ he never will

Jason @ 8:09 pm:

It truly is odd how we cant get a replacement. Marriucci wants to coach in the NFL again, he doesnt want to do college. I heard from a source that DG and UCLA are offering 3 times more than what Dorrell was making. Thats over 2 mil a season. People just now that its tough to win at UCLA with the academic issues. We cant hire thugs and good athletes without the grades

Big Moe @ 8:16 pm:

JR - so true! He’s got to cover his *ss just in case. However, the timing is awful strange….straight out of the Chancellor’s office, and into Ty Willingham’s presence? (via phone or in person). Is he playing DG for an idiot, or is DG that big of an idiot? I really can’t believe that he has screwed this up so badly. The longer it takes…just befuddles me. All the good candidates have been locked up (or at least played us and got better contracts from their current schools). Let Walker go to U-Dub, and as others have stated, go down with a sinking ship. He can’t be that dumb (but one never knows). If he stays at UCLA, he will undoubtedly get a big raise from his already inflated salary. DG should tell him to go…now! Leave us alone!

BC @ 8:23 pm:

Is it true that SMU has offer Rick Neuheisel the head coaching job? Can somebody confirm this?

Tommy Bruin @ 8:57 pm:

I’m hoping that Guerrero has a surprise after some team finishes it’s bowl - maybe a June Jones surprise, or Mike Leach? I hope that what the silence and inaction is all about. The alternative - that Walker and Neuheisel are the only candidates and one of them will be our next head coach - is too painful to contemplate. Neuheisel would be better than Walker, but he’s far from ideal.

Ticked @ 9:18 pm:

Herm being tossed at us now.I really can’t believe we get linked to all these losers.

Real USC Fan @ 9:47 pm:

U GUYS R PATHETIC! DeWayne should get the hell out of Dodge…. Why stay. He is not getting the job. Your AD will not pull the trigger on a non-tested head coach. He neeeeeds his job!

JSchlich @ 10:11 pm:

Nobody wants the freakin’ job except for Neuheisel or DW. As for rumors of outsiders, Herm Edwards is no more of a loser in his pro coaching endeavors than a guy named Pete Carroll. Maybe we’ll get lucky with a questionable hire like USC did, but that’s wishful thinking. How many Trojan fans supported Carroll as a hire, especially after his first season at 6-6????? Not many, but he proved that it’s all about energy and enthusiasm, which are prerequisites for good recruiting. Experience is part of the equation too, but put Petey on a level playing field talent-wise, and he’s average at best. We don’t need a genius or an icon, we need sombody with energy and enthusiasm who is a half way decent tactician. Our best bet is to give it to someone who wants the freaking job badly right now rather than look for a needle in a haystack. Our recruiting class has got to be getting jumpy. Neuheisel with DW as DC would be a good pair to cover both sides of the ball, and they can both recruit. DG, get your thumb out of your *ss and call the press conference!

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 11:03 pm:

SOME BAD NEWS TONIGHT…

I just heard the Joe MacDonald show and Joe, who’s friends with Rick Neuheisel, and is keeping contact with him during the search, reported tonight that Rick hasn’t heard from UCLA in a week!

WOW!! See, this is why the other candidates began to drop out. UCLA is not handling this well.

Peter @ 11:27 pm:

Yeah I heard the ominous news on Joe MacDonald show also. I can’t believe that there is a chance the DG will let Rick slip through the cracks. If he is smart enough to give rick a chance I really think its going to be deja vu similar to what Carrol did at USC. No one wanted job and Garrent took chance on Pete and the rest is history. Does anyone have any contacts for DG or emails so we can send him emails telling him not to literally screw this one up. He can’t continue to rest on his Howland hire and except Bruin nation to give him a pass if he screws us on this one.

Peter

Bay Area Bruin @ 11:40 pm:

KD as an offensive coordinator? HA that is laughable. But for the sake of 2 million, I think he would be a great fit for a Houston franchise (That is the definition of mediocre).

laubs @ 12:19 am:

We want Erickson, Bellotti AND Carroll.

An immodest proposal by the search firm that Dan Guerrero should’ve hired.

http://wewantericksonbellottiandcarroll.blogspot.com/

Joe Bruin @ 1:12 am:

I can’t believe that we are going to lose DW. 40 years of medirocitry. What’s 40 more?

Joe Bruin @ 1:13 am:

What’s 40 years of more of the same?

Dana @ 1:13 am:

In case any Texan fans are reading, please support Dorrell for the OC job. Some people are head coaches, and some are assistants and Dorrell would be a great assistant. He wasn’t that bad per se, just that he tried to implement a west coast offense in college which really doesn’t work with all the constant turnover of players. But, in the NFL, all the teams use the west coast offense so that wouldn’t be a problem.

alx324 @ 1:45 am:

Jim Mora is not the end all be all, he runs a west coast offense that doesnt work in college. If DG has no intentions of hiring RN then he better pull something out of his ass or he is the next one thats going to get his walking papers.

DigDog @ 2:26 am:

Based on Joe MacDonald’s comments, it sounds like Guerrero is going to hire Steve Lavin again. But, for what it’s worth here’s Guerrero’s e-mail address. Keep it clean, concise, mature and tot he point, please.

dguerrero@athletics.ucla.edu

Javier @ 7:03 am:

Brian Dohn finally wrote a unbias article about the UCLA search and the two candidates.

http://www.presstelegram.com/ucla/ci_7825682

I think it’s worth reading.

bones @ 7:09 am:

DW did the right thing by interviewing with Washington. It says to DG ‘put up or shut up.’ I think that DW’s next step is to interview for HC jobs elsewhere. I think he has decided it is now his time for an HC job, and he is right. He deserves that chance somewhere. I think he would be great as the UCLA HC, but it is looking less and less that is going to happen. If Guererro doesn’t act soon, he will lose DW to another team and we will be stuck with RN whether he wants him or not. This job is a tough sell to an established, well-respected HC. I think DG is smoking some bad stuff if he thinks he is going to find some diamond plated coach at this late date to come to Westwood and play dufus to SC and the Trojan Times.

Jeff @ 7:57 am:

It just gets curioser and curioser. The thought of Herm makes me squirm. I can’t say Neuheisel without thinking Neu-weasel. Great Plaschke column on Guerrero in today’s L.A. Times. It goes back to a comment I made here a while back: How could the AD not have a rock solid replacement ready to introduce shortly after he 86ed Dorrell? He’s as incompetent as his former head coach (you remember, the one who had no Plan C at QB when QBs 1 and 2 went down?). And if he didn’t have a replacement coach ready to go, that tells you Guerrero is incompetent AND indecisive–he waited until after the USC game to start his search. Sorry to be so glass half empty, but I bleed blue and gold and I’m in an awful funk over the current situation. Are coaching prospects turning us down because of the program, the money or because Guerrero isn’t someone they’d want to work for? I hope Guerrero proves me wrong with a surprise hire that would be a great way to celebrate the new year. But my guess is, Guerrero will settle for a holiday leftover.

Javier @ 8:47 am:

I think Rick Neuheisel is the right coach for this job. I don’t really mind what people say about his past. His record shows how good of a coach he is. I have read of some of the mistakes that he made which by the way were minor violations. The only problem with Rick is that he was caught when other coaches do it all the time.

Scott @ 10:17 am:

Are you referring to Joe McDonnell on KLAC?

Dana Pt Bruin @ 10:25 am:

It is time to hire Rick Neuheisel 66-30….say it again and again 66-30. DG please make my weekend. Unless you are really good at pulling some new rabbit out of your hat. I think NOT !!!

Louis @ 1:01 pm:

Bones, I don’t understand why you consider Walker to be a hc that would be good at Ucla? What do you base that on? Are you related to him? Are you a SC fan? Are you smoking a “blunt”?
