Norm Chow Takes A Bow

ESPN radio is reporting that Norm Chow has taken himself out of the running for the head coaching position at UCLA.  There was no mention of the reason, but the fact that he is no longer a choice must have the Walkeristas and Dorrellistas furious.  Also, lets remember that Chow never got a second interview!  Did he bow to save face??

We have not checked the boards or any other news sources … it's going to be get interesting the next few days!!

Update:  Here's Chow's statement, via Doh!n:

Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow pulled his name out of consideration for UCLA’s head coaching job Thursday, and said he will remain with the NFL team.  “I appreciate the interest UCLA has shown in me and the opportunity to speak with them about the head coaching position,’’ Chow said in a statement. “While I was told that our meeting went very well, I was given no indication as to what their final decision will be, or what their time frame is to make that decision.

“Nevertheless, I have decided not to pursue things further with UCLA at this time. My focus is on the Tennessee Titans and preparing our team for a chance at the playoffs.’’
Chow interviewed Saturday night in Kansas City, before the Titans played the Kansas City Chiefs. He was one of several candidates waiting to hear whether he would be invited back for a second interview.

UCLA has moved forward in its interview process. Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Rick Neuheisel, a former UCLA quarterback, and Temple coach Al Golden were both on campus this week for a second round of interviews, which included a meeting with school chancellor Gene Block.

It sounds like the problem was UCLA and the way they are handling this coaching search: “While I was told that our meeting went very well, I was given no indication as to what their final decision will be, or what their time frame is to make that decision…” Why would anyone want to work for a school that is being so wishy washy about hiring a new coach?

About to Puke @ 1:51 pm:

Cameron….Not giving Chow an immediate answer, or an answer that fits HIS time frame, is the most polite way of saying, “No thank you.”

asiansportsfanatic @ 2:05 pm:

This should not be a problem for UCLA. Slick Rick Neuheisel is the right man for the job anyways.

John W. Reagan @ 3:31 pm:

Why haven’t we hired Rick yet?

Dorrell Hates Me @ 4:22 pm:

It appears that it will be either Rick or Al. I haven’t heard of this Al guy.

Temple’s website… “Al Golden, who has 12 postseason bowl games on his resume, is in his second season as head football coach at Temple University. The Colts Neck, N.J. native was named the Owls’ 24th head football coach on December 6, 2005 after spending the prior five seasons as defensive coordinator at the University of Virginia. The 37-year old Golden is the fourth-youngest head coach in college football’s bowl subdivision.”

He may be a young, up and coming coach, but we are looking for a proven Head Coach or at least one with more experience. Also, it would be nice and wise to pick a guy who is familiar with the West Coast/California… Al hasn’t been a coach at a school across the Mississippi.

I’d still prefer Tedford, but Rick will do. You guys were right in that Bob Fields won’t be picking a coach until after the Rematch.com Bowl.

Interesting link to article about some background on situations at CU and UW. Seems pretty petty and backstabbing going on. I still say Bring Back Rick. He is the only candidate who has what it takes to go toe to toe with PomPom Pete.

Bluebruin (AKA Diego) @ 4:52 pm:

Translation= You called Golden in for a second interview, you haven’t called me for one and I’m Norm Chow, while Golden is a nobody. I have to save face, since it looks like they’re not giving me the job. I know, I’ll come out and say I’m not interested anymore.

LMAO!

Lifelong Bruin fan @ 5:47 pm:

I think Chow would have done a great job at UCLA so I am very disappointed to hear the news, but not surprised. But given that it is so, I’ll be crossing my fingers that it’s Neuheisel of the candidates I’ve heard so far. For all the people taking pot shots at Chow (he doesn’t deserve it), please, keep it to yourself.

Pat M @ 8:07 am:

Rick Neuheisel is the man. I like Norm Chow, but I understand his frustration at being kept in the dark and not being invited to a second interview with the Chancellor. I cannot understand why Golden was even interviewed. Are we resorting to nepotism at UCLA again? Norm knows the Pac-10, and so does Rick. We don’t need an outsider who has to learn the ropes on the job. We have learned from our basketball program when we hired Gene Bartow who was a great coach, but he could not adapt to LA or our fans at Pauley.

Hire Rick and let’s get on with recruiting. We need to start planning for an on campus stadium NOW. We are the only major college football program that does not have our own stadium. We will never be great without our own stadium.

DG is doing a great job so far. Keep it up, and see you all with Love in San Antonio.

I’m wondering when they are going to announce Chow has signed an extension with a raise?! Can’t believe you all really thought Norm was serious about the H.C. job. This is par for the course…go interview for a college head coaching job and then get his raise/extension to stay…
I think I blogged that about two weeks ago.

RISE UP @ 2:04 pm:

mme38,I disagree with your contention that Chow used his U.C.L.A. interview as leverage for a raise .I think it’s obvious that was Bellotti’s motivation .I’m guessing Chow grew frustrated and was put off by Dan Guerrero’s overture’s to Bellotti. I imagine that somebody with 37 years coaching experience (CHOW) recognized that Dan Guerrero’s handling of this hiring process was indicative of an athletic department lacking a clear vision for its football program . The hiring of and search for a “search firm ” AFTER Dorrell’s firing as well as Chancellor Block apparently conducting his own search are signs of ineptitude. As for who was on my list of coaches ? ( a question posed by Javier earlier today ) I really liked Brian Kelly because of all his experience .I also loved Chow for the same reason . Put either one of those guys with so.cal. talent and oh my god it would have been nice .You can see Brian Kelly’s team kicking butt on the picture box right now ,that’s a coach with a plan .

Ted H. @ 2:16 pm:

Chow wants to become a head coach. He withdrew his name due to Al Golden(Al who?) & RN being called back for 2nd interviews.

Bellotti used speaking to UCLA to get a bump in his base salary; other perks, or both from Phil Knight and the University of Oregon.

Ted H. @ 2:18 pm:

Can DG & UCLA announce that RN is our new head coach tonight after the Las Vegas Bowl…maybe walking off the field???

Roma @ 2:54 pm:

Hooray!!!

No Norman Chow!

Let’s get some personality in here. This
was lacking under Dorrell!

Roma @ 2:55 pm:

Keep Walker as
DC and get Neuheisel!!!!!!!!!

shony420 @ 3:17 pm:

hooray!!!!we get to get a guy with some ok,coaching experience as a coach.rick neuheisel, because no one with better credentials would take the job :)~ but hey next to al golden,he looks like a mike bellotti, and our BBteam just beat michigan so its a good day.
merry xmas.
