Big Movement: Terry Bowden & Bronco Mendenhall
If anyone of you heard the Bruin Show last night one of our editors finally broke the news of which coaches had representatives contact us months ago about the UCLA head coaching position. We kept things under wraps for all this time out of courtesy to these coaches. We had hinted that they were big name Southern coaches. Last night we let the cat out of the bag and named them (listen to the podcast). The two coaches were Terry Bowden and Mike Leach.
We thought that since Bowden basically disappeared during the search that his preliminary inquiries to us and others yielded bad news for him, so he gave up. But lo and behold, after we broke the scoop last night, today it is all over the news … Terry Bowden is actively campaigning again for the job!!
Former Auburn coach Terry Bowden is interested in the UCLA opening. "I made a decision about a year ago to formally get back into coaching," Bowden said Wednesday from Nebraska, where he had a speaking engagement. "UCLA is obviously a great job. If the right person goes in there, it's a place you'd expect to contend for a conference championship and national championship. You'd be in a talent-rich area. They've shown glimpses of outstanding football the last few years."
Sources said the interest is mutual as there has been contact between UCLA and Bowden's camp.
Read the rest of the article. Bowden talks like real champ. He may not be our favorite choice … but ABW! And that is not all. As we said last night on the Bruin Show, Bronco Mendenhall has his hat in the ring, and we like that:
UCLA is also looking at former BYU, North Carolina State and USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow, currently the coordinator for the Tennessee Titans of the NFL. And today, ESPN reported the Bruins would like to talk to current Cougar coach Bronco Mendenhall about replacing fired Karl Dorrell.
Good thing we got our news on tape last night before this all broke in the MSM today. We have been on it here at DD but can't tell you everything. Dan Guerrero is losing some of his secrecy here, but hey it's good news to us. Let's hope this is all we hear … we would not want to go through what Michigan is going through with their search. We hope that DG is not keeping Leach out of the equation either.
We will give you our top 4 as we did last night in no particular order: Kelly, Leach, Neuheisel, and Mendenhall. Add 2 to the list as top-: Mora and Bowden.
One last item of note. We received an email last night about this new little blog: WeWantWalker.wordpress.com. Yep, its live. And what's hilarious is that our editor was talking last night on the Bruin Show about how we were going to launch AnyoneButWalker.com but decided we didn't want to go that far in making this all about Walker. After the show we got word of this site. Hilarious. We might just have to put up ABW.com now for kicks. Fire away …

JRBruin @ 9:49 am:
Glad I see some of the bruinsnation and dd folks are making their presence felt over on the walker site.
JRBruin @ 9:50 am:
Oh, and as for the rest of this article, I’m loving the news of other options. Still haven’t heard anything about us pursuing Kelly, does anyone have any indications of DG or our search firm contacting Kelly?
UCLAN @ 10:07 am:
Mendenhall would be great! Two ten-win seasons in three years. Two conference titles. I wonder if we could finally be lucky and actually get a really good coach like Mendenhall.
UCLAN @ 10:10 am:
Just wanted to add that if as DD says, Mendenhall himself was actively pursuing this job, and we do not hire him, we are idiots.
Ticked @ 10:10 am:
We need to drown that Walker site with all the firepower we can muster.Count me out if Walker is chosen.I have been a supporter both physicaly and financialy for years but that would be it.
AGBruin @ 10:43 am:
Bowden’s public statement about interest in the job puts a whole new spin on the search. I think just maybe we’re going end up with a quality coach.
Gary @ 11:32 am:
Thank you so much for this site. It is great to come here and get some idea what is going on…the media, bastards that they are, certainly are not letting too much “out of the bag”

Have you thought about changing the tag line under the banner to ABW?
Keep up the good work… This is exciting news all around. I’m still a little deflated after missing Johnson, but things don’t appear too bad.
Diego (Aka Bluebruin) @ 11:44 am:
outstanding work, DD!
Incidentally, is there any talk about Rick coming out of Westwood that you can confirm ? The only bits that I can confirm are all negative.
Scott @ 11:52 am:
Bowden may not be a bad choice. 47-17-1 at Auburn and 111-52-3 overall. Granted he has been out of coaching for 9 years but he does fit the desire of previous HC experience with modest success…ABW
Jeff @ 12:15 pm:
here’s the thing! everyone says we need a coach with experience and I totally agree. what I dissagree about is someone like Chow not having enough experience.granted he has never been a H.C. but by far!,he has the most eperience of any choach out there overall. check this out. he has over 30yrs of coaching experience. he has seen how it all works. recruiting,off-season workouts, practice and team meetings, film study,etc.,etc. to say that he would not be ready as a H.C. is rediculous. he has seen every type of defensive formation(especially while at S.C. when everyone was trying to come up with a defense to stop their high powered offense)he is the best offensive coordinator in C.F.history. so by far! he is the most experienced, and it would be nothing for him,or little stransition at all,for him to step in and take over. plus kids would flock to play for him. Chow better get the job if offered! Go Bruins!
AGBruin @ 12:22 pm:
Vermeil was out of coaching for 15 years before becoming the Rams head coach. Bowdens personality and presence would do well in the LA media circus and would give Carroll a run for his money.
Diego (Aka Bluebruin) @ 12:27 pm:
Bowden is also a player’s coach, which I think is what we’d need in order to bring in better recruit. A player’s coach is precisely what Pete Carroll is, which is why he was more designed for the college game.
He brings energy, enthusiasm and a visible passion for the game. We’ve been lacking that since VErmeil.
John W. Reagan @ 12:54 pm:
Mendenhall is not leaving BYU. If he put his name in the mix, he did so looking for something from BYU. Frankly why would he leave BYU for UCLA? BYU has much better facilities, better fan support, and he’s a BYU guy. Mendenhall is probably just looking for a little leverage with BYU. Besides, Bowden would be a much better chioce. Bowden will start winning right away. However, the best choice for UCLA is Neuheisel (hands down), but of course we will not hire him.
Louis Miranda @ 1:20 pm:
I hope that the interest in Terry Bowden is real and not some rumor. I believe Terry would be an excellent choice. It doesn’t matter that he has been out of coaching, in fact it will bring him back energized and enthusiastic to coach again or why would he even bother. He had at least one year where he went unbeaten at Auburn in the tough SEC. This guy hasn’t forgotten how to coach and he has had success and has obvious experience. He said before the season began as a commentator for yahoo sports, that he felt that UCLA was over- rated and that they have lacked passion in football for many years. Boy was he right! He knows about the culture here in regards to football, and I’m sure he wouldn’t come out here unless he got assurances from Dan Guerrero and the administration that the negative culture surrounding the football program will change. Terry Bowden would bring instant credibility to UCLA football. This is a legitamate coach. No experiments with this guy. He will seriously have Pete Carroll and Sc concerned and fighting for 4 and 5 star player’s and he will turn the slide the Bruins are in against USC which currently stands at 1-8. UCLA will definetly win a Pac-10 crown and go to a BCS game and it won’t take him 5 years. Terry Bowden is a great choice not because of his father’s accomplishments, he is a great choice because of his own accomplishments. If Guerrero is serious about turning the football program into a winner with a legitamte chance to win the National Championship and this is not a rumor, then he will hire Terry Bowden now.
AGBruin @ 1:35 pm:
What an upgrade that would be, from Dorrell to Bowden - from a poser to a REAL football coach… let’s not over analyse this thing.
Bruinfan @ 2:55 pm:
Been away for a few days…what a change. I would like Neuheisel for HC, but I LOVE seeing names like Bowden and Chow being seriously considered. Like some one else just said, real coaches!!! ABW!!!!
AGBruin @ 5:19 pm:
Bronco Mendenhal officially denies any contact from UCLA and interest in job.
About to Puke @ 5:22 pm:
AG…No way Mendenhall is going to admit interest in the UCLA job while he is preparing his team to play UCLA.
scott @ 6:11 pm:
kelly is garbage. he is hated everywhere he has coached. he’ll be hated at cincinatti (where they wisely didnt give him an extension because he is unproven with his own players). and if he comes to ucla, he’ll be hated here in 2 years when he takes off for the nfl
Jeff @ 6:53 pm:
Terry Bowden or Norm Chow would be great. either of them would be an awesome hire! Just can’t wai to see our Bruins back on a National Championship level and on ESPN again all the time! let’s go Guerrero!
Jim @ 7:15 pm:
Sorry to bore you with the past but I attended my beloved UCLA in the 50’s. Red Sanders was still there and we had Tommy Prothro to carry on the tradition. Since then we have relied on my GOD John Wooden, track and field and womens sports to make us #1 in NCAA championships. Can we make football a priority?
DumpDorrell @ 7:25 pm:
Jim … that is what this site is all about … making football a priority and a success! Thanks for stopping by. Do give us the insight of your cherished experience with the great Sanders et al … please do not be shy!
DumpDorrell @ 7:26 pm:
AG … ABP is right. There is no way Mendenhall will come out and say he is talking with his bowl competitor about their job. That is partly why we believe we won’t know who our next coach will be until after our bowl game.
anthony @ 7:42 pm:
How about this? We get one of those highly touted coaches we are looking for AND Chow as OC? Maybe a bit farfetched but a bruin can dream cant he?
Diego (Aka Bluebruin) @ 7:59 pm:
Jim- A pleasure having you here, sir. I mirror DD’s sentiments; don’t be shy, post your opinions with reflections to the past. I would LOVE to read some of your material.
mark @ 8:06 pm:
I emailed Terry Bowden through the Yahoo Sports website the day Dorrell got fired and asked if he was interested in the UCLA job…and he never wrote back (no surprise). I hope these rumors are true–he would be a great choice with a big name. How could incoming recruits who committed to Dorrell go elsewhere if the new head coach were Bowden??

ryhaz @ 5:58 pm:
I am a BYU guy and I am hoping that Bronco stays here, losing him would set our program back 10 years. I also think that coaching UCLA is much more about relating and communicating with media than it is at BYU. Bowden would be great for you and us. GO COUGS
