A Pitch To Dan Guerrero: Interview Turner Gill
University of Buffalo's football program jumped up to Div-1A 9 years ago and have had a very hard time of it. They won all of 10 games in their first 7 years in the top division, and only 8 conference games in the Mid-American (MAC) conference in their first 8 years. Turner Gill took over the program as head coach, his first HC job, last year to help turn around the program. In his second year this year, Gill took a perennial doormat, one of the worst teams in the country, to a tie for their divisional title in the MAC - going 4-2 in the conference during the regular season. Turner Gill turned a program around in his first 2 years as a head coach.
More on his efforts this year: During the season Tuner Gill's team took on a highly ranked Rutgers team and highly ranked Penn State. They lost those games but scored a respectable 24 points on Penn State before losing 45-24. Buffalo took on big programs in their out-of-conference schedule and ended the season 5-7. For his efforts in changing the fortunes of Buffalo in such short order Gill was named MAC Coach of the Year. He has not had a winning season, but to win in his conference after a decade of last place finishes is noteworthy.
What Turner Gill did with a horrible program is worth praising. And he is going about rising through the college coaching ranks the right way - as so many champion head coaches have done - he is proving it at a smaller program first. And, it bears noting, Turner Gill is black. Gill did not automatically presume that he was entitled to a shot at a big name program for his first HC gig, like some coaches. He went out and proved he deserved a shot … and he proved it in 2 short years. That is why he is now being interviewed for Michigan's job.
We would like to see Dan Guerrero interview Turner Gill. He has earned it. It is a complete slap in the face to UCLA fans that DeWayne Walker walks around as if he is should be our next HC, when he has not proved he can coach. Now, we are not saying Gill should be our coach. But we are saying we need to talk to him. If the Black Coaches Association says that giving an interview to a rising black coach even though you most likely have someone else in mind is still very beneficial, then that is even more reason. But make no mistake, Turner Gill has EARNED a shot.

Let’s see ,Osborne passed on him and he knows him.Bad call.
jeff @ 8:23 pm:
lol! o.k. so let’s have a battle here! (and no!,i am not saying for shure I want Walker as a head coach, but maybe?) what proof do you have that he cannot coach?? I really gotta hear what you have to say about this! I have been watching Ucla F.B. closely for years now! go ahed! I wanna hear your points??????
About to Puke @ 8:29 pm:
Jeff, my keyboard doesn’t have enough keys. LOL Let me just say this:
Utah 44 Ucla 6
Washington St. 27 Ucla 7
jeff @ 8:44 pm:
oh yeah! I forgot! you are the supposed football genious! lol Utah and Wash St.? that all you got!? I mean seriously! if you were a coach “supposedly, like you say you were! obviously you didn’t seem to notice how pathetic our offense was moving the ball and going 3 and out the whole time! come on’ Puke! you gotta be better than that Bra! you gotta come strong! Utah,Wash St.??? four words for ya! Jay Norvell,Karl Dorrell!!!
About to Puke @ 8:55 pm:
Genius? Wow, you need to read my last post to Rise Up. Truthfully, I really don’t have the energy required to go over every reason why I don’t think Walker is the right guy. Can he coach? I’m thinking, hell yes he can coach. The guy paid his dues with the Redskins and New England as well as a short stint at sc and some other stops along the way.
But, do I think he is the right guy for UCLA? No.
When I see a defense that is not prepared, I know where to lay the blame. And, it ain’t on Jay Norvell….even though he needs to go, as well.
JRBruin @ 8:57 pm:
Jeff, I think the point is that we can do better than that. Why should we prove to you that he can’t coach when instead it should be you proving to us that he can. He just doesn’t have enough experience to prove he will be a successful head coach, if we’re trying to erase the mediocrity that’s plagued this program for decades, we need to do better than picking a guy because.. well.. hey we can’t prove that he wouldn’t be a good coach.
About to Puke @ 9:12 pm:
Hey, Jeff….I don’t get paid to post opinions on this site. I’m just a guy that has ties to UCLA, I know a little something about football, and I made my living knowing college football.
A few days ago I volunteered to shut up and just monitor this site rather than post stuff that admittedly made me sound like a know-it-all. Several people asked me to keep posting. So, here I am. If my comments have offended you, I’m sorry. However, I did read a post from you a few days ago boasting about how you are an expert. It is my experience that when someone has to tell you they are an expert, they are usually pissing in your ear.
There ya go, bra.
RISE UP @ 9:15 pm:
Goodnight everybody .
jeff @ 9:16 pm:
how has his defenses not been prepared?! you all forget that these aren’t his recruits! our defense was 30th in the nation this year! considering how awful our offense was and how often our defense was on the field! so actually,we have a top 10 defense when you take that into account. our defense has had minor problems! but you are asking Walker to turn them into LSU wil Dorrells recruits! now when het gets his recruits in there, that is a whole other story! now don’t get me wrong! I think Chow would be a hell-of-a-coach as well! bit I think Walker has potential! am I worried about another assistand taking over? hell-yes! but I think Walker is different, and he is the reason for our top 5 recruiting class as well. still really no valid points though about Walker????? C’mon guys!
About to Puke @ 9:17 pm:
Night all!
Javier @ 9:17 pm:
I agree with Jeff that Walker can coach. He can coach defense. I also agree that the offense put the defense in a very bad situation in games. You all know the offense was awful. The defense was out on the field way to long. The defense was tire in a lot of the games this year. Even that being said the defense was good.
I like Walker too as a coach. But I think UCLA must look for someone that has head coaching experience first. Their are plenty of other candidates that should be looked at first.
By the way. There is no need to put down Walker because you guybs don’t like him as the next UCLA head coach. Everyone of the candidates have flaws that can be said of them. The agenda is to make sure UCLA are finding the best coaches out there to put UCLA over the top. I will keep indorsing Rick Neuheisel. I will accept him with all his flaws. Come back home Rick. Where you belong. Go Bruins!
jeff @ 9:20 pm:
lol! nit an expert! but pretty damn close! aint trying to offend you either Puke! I play football, know the ins and outs as a player and know what is true! besides what the other people see who have never played the sport! also,i am a die-hard Bruin fan and have followed them for years! so I know my stuff as well! Lol,I don’t piss in peoples ear just truths!
MME @ 9:43 pm:
Does any one wanna have a pissing contest? Oh wait, never mind. jeff, you still play football? Can you send me tickets to your next game? Are you guys gonna make the playoffs? you aren’t jeff posing as Tom Brady on Sundays are you?
Andre @ 9:46 pm:
Jeff,
Which highschool do you play for?
cliq @ 9:59 pm:
did we spend all the money? jw
Andre @ 10:00 pm:
Jeff, go to Bruinsnation.com for some thoughts on Walker.
jeff @ 10:08 pm:
I played for Warren High Shcool in downey. I graduated in 1999. was 1st team all SGV and all C.I.F. my father passed years ago and just really detered me from getting back to F.B. but am making a comeback next year! God-willing I can be a J.C. all-american. or I was thinking about walking on,but tution is freakin’ expensive! I played Middle Linebacker,am 6′4 240. Ucla would be my top choice if I got an offer. have always wanted to be a Bruin! ever since my first game that my grandfather took me too at The Rose Bowl!
FUSC @ 10:09 pm:
U guys y fire dorrell? So what he aint a good coach he is a really nice guy. Maybe WOODEN COULD COACH OUR FOOTBALL TEAM. He has as much head coaching esperiance as dorrell did and as walker does. But cerially Walker wouldnt be a bad coach but i would prefer Leach, NEUHEISEL, Mooch, or Kelly. Why not just give Rick a chance?
sevascisum @ 10:11 pm:
It’s not a matter of if he can’t coach, it’s a matter that we’re not a program where he should be given a CHANCE to prove that he can. Let him go prove his abilities at another lower program somewhere else. We’ve gone through enough to be unwilling to act as another training ground for an unproven head coach.
If the new head coach wants to keep him on as D-coordinator, fine (Regardless of all the hype around Walker, I don’t think Guerrero is seriously interested in hiring him as head coach). If not, see ya later, Walker.
Fred @ 11:06 pm:
DumpDorrell,
This is a very strong article you have written.
I played football in the MAC Conference back before Buffalo joined. You’re right, what Gill accomplished is definitely worth noting, and bringing him in for an interview would not be a token interview.
George Bruin @ 11:52 pm:
I will take Norm Chow over Turner Gill any day. Chow could make Ben Olson look respectable. Check out his bio before you go running to these guys who have had success at small programs. Second Choice has not won a National Title since the guy left.

Fred @ 12:31 am:
George Bruin,
He said “Interview Turner Gill.” He did not say “Hire Turner Gill.” If Chow is you’re guy, cool, but do you expect Gurrero to hire the guy without doing his due diligence by interviewing other top candidates?
BTW, several top coaches have come out of the MAC conference such as Uban Meyer, Nick Saban, Bo Schelembechler, Brian Kelly, Gary Pinkel, Ron Zook, Woody Hayes, Jim Grobe, etc., etc.,etc. Keep in mind that what you are calling a small program is an NCAA FBS/Div.1-A football program, not Occidental College!
Brady Hoke of Ball State (another MAC school) is on Michigan’s interview list. Also, Ohio State’s Jim Tressell coached at Div. 1-AA Youngstown State before going to OSU, and that has worked out quite well.
John W. Reagan @ 8:34 am:
Turner Gill? No thanks! We need a proven winner, with an established track record. I like Rich Brooks at kentucky better than Turner Gill.
George Bruin @ 10:29 am:
Fred,
Turner Gill has a fine resume if you are looking for someone to revive San Diego State. This is UCLA! Buffalo is the equivalent of Cal State Northridge in athletics. At least Northridge had the stones to kill their football program. Despite the Mullets and Camaros littering the campus, U of BLo is a fine academic institution. UCLA should not bring in another Dorrell that is in over his head. If Gill was such a great coach, why did Nebraska pass him over, in a state where he is revered and loved, for Bo Pellini? I have provided you a site that will quench your taste for your Bulls.
http://buffalobulls.blogspot.com
If hell froze over and Gill was hired, I don’t want to be logging on to dumpgill.com, grillgill.com, or nilgill.com. As a taxpayer of this state, I don’t want to foot the bill for useless interview.
Fred @ 11:01 am:
George Bruin,
For some reason you cant’ grasp that the topic here is “INTERVIEW Gill.”
Secondly, Nebraska passing on Gill is no knock against his ability as a coach. Bo Pellini was passed up for Bill Callahan. Michigan State passed on Brian Kelly for Dantonio, and Kelly is a very good coach.
Also, anyone who follows college football knows Nebraska’s issue this year was A VERY WEAK DEFENSE, and with Bo Pellini being the DC at LSU, it makes sense Nebraska went with him. Your point has no merit.
Again, there are many top coaches that came out of non BCS conference FBS/Div. 1-A schools.
About to Puke @ 11:07 am:
Fred, I agree with your thoughts on why Nebraska went with Bo Pellini. And, I think Turner will eventually become a success as a major college head coach. The point to be made though was that Nebraska went with Pellini in spite of the fact Turner is black, not because Turner is black. They made the decision that gives them their best chance to win.
No argument whatsoever regarding top coaches coming out of what are now non BCS conferences. Miami (Ohio) in particular.
About to Puke @ 11:13 am:
By the way, to reiterate an early expressed opinion, I think Brian Kelly deserves a long look.
George Bruin @ 1:46 pm:
Fred,
I learned to grasp concepts at UCLA a long time ago and I understand the word “interview”. Interviewing this guy because he is the coach of your alma mater is not a reason UCLA should look at Gill. Maybe you play golf with him or he patted you on the butt at U of Blo Alumni event. I don’t know. I have nothing against Turner Gill, but he is a waist of an interview. He does not have the experience as a coach of a “relevant” program to be interviewed.
bruinbob77 @ 3:29 pm:
TURNER GILL/??!!
Firing Karl was the first step for a solution to our problem which, for this’77 grad and LONG time UCLA fanatic (my 3 children still refer to usc fans as “trojan dogs”) was that our FB games simply became no fun. The last 5 years of idiotic coaching decisions, boring playcalling and inexplicable, humiliating losses drained me of formerly easy retorts to SC neighbors, co-workers and, yes, family members who didn’t have the grades to get in.
I am sick and tired. (My ‘41 chevy still bears the “8 str8″ plates!) Are we serious? Turner Gill??!! Just 2 years ago at age 45 he was “director of player dev.” for the packers! He was 5-7 this year beating Akron and losing to the likes of Ball State! Ridding ourselves of the Dorrell experiment is only step one. His replacement will be here for at least 5 years, so we must be prudent and colorblind!
I am mixed over Chow bec he has been passed over so many times there must be a valid reason (no personality??!). I would love to have Rick back, but fear the current adminisration is relunctant (see my prior post that, unfortunately, he is not an option).
Which brings me back to JUNE JONES. I initially thought there is no way he would leave Hawaii. Then 12/10 Press Telegram says he “has put out feelers” and DD reported (via CBS Sports) that he is Hot and Heavy for the job!! WOW! run and shoot offense!! Productive and fun to watch! A contributor suggested he is not an option because he gave Colt a “2nd chance” given his drunken 18 yr old trespass… No one knows a “2nd chance” better than Jones who almost died in a car accident in 2001 and has obviously re evaluated his life goals. It would be a mistake of huge purportions not to get Jones or Neuheisal. Energy, intelligence and enthusiasm. We would florish..we deserve it.

Fred @ 10:11 am:
George Bruin,
If you actually read what what I said you’ll notice I stated that “I played football in the MAC Conference back BEFORE Buffalo joined.” So how do you gather that i’m a UB Alum? Again you make another baseless point.
Clearly you are more interested in winning an argument than addressing facts. I’ve pointed out several top coaches that have come from the conference and a current coach in the running for the Michigan job. I’ve pointed out THE FACT that Nebraska went with a defensive minded coach to address the weakness in their program, and you still don’t get it!
DumpDorrell has demonstrated an understanding of how a program must evaluate coaching candidates, in this article. You are clearly running off of emotion and convoluted logic. I pray Guerrero isn’t processing things the way you are. If so, expect another 5 years of mediocrity.
George Bruin @ 11:59 am:
Fred,
I am secure enough to give my opinion without boring the readers of this great site with the details of past football glory in the mac conference. Thank God Dan Guerreo graduated from UCLA as I did. Praise to God for not letting Dan Guerrero attend a MAC school. If you read my posts, I include a thing called “links” to coach’s bios. Try it sometime and you might form a valid point and even change my pov. I have provided a link that may help you form constructive arguments. Take a class or 20.
http://www.uclaextension.edu
Fred @ 1:24 pm:
George Bruin,
If you were so “secure” you wouldn’t need to play the “I went to UCLA” card to support your non sense. Typically, people who approach facts with attempted insults are incapable of defending their points. It’s the easy way out.
Clearly your emotions have retarded you ability to sensibly debate this issue with maturity, so I’ll let you off the hook and move on.
Bluebruin (aka Diego) @ 1:34 pm:
Gentlesirs, I visit other forums on the Internet where there are constant exchanges about what has been written. I enjoy my time there, but I do enter this particular site with a different mindset. I don’t begrudge differences of opinion, but I do wish we’d all focus on the imperative task at hand. Side banter of a personal nature will most certainly undermind the deliberation needed to arrive at a well founded list of candidates, or a single candidate, we can all endorse.
This is a critical time for thinking, not fighting.
Tom @ 1:41 pm:
Wow Jeff…With all things aside, you’ll be what, 27 next year? You think you can still make it in CF? Not trying to put you down, but if you can go for it. I was actually thinking of trying to go back to school and try out myself.
