DeWayne Walker: Wow, look at me, I sound like a real head coach now
Do we need 5 more years of this:
(DeWayne Walker) also got a laugh out of reporters after being asked about the condition of offensive tackle Brian Abraham, who did not practice and was wearing a walking boot on his right foot. "Not sure," Walker said, "I’d rather not comment on that just yet." Then he added, "Wow, look at me, I sound like a real head coach now."
"Can't believe I'm the head coach … woohooo. Uh, what do I do now?!" Does anyone have any doubts that hiring Walker as head coach will be an on-the-job-training experiment again? Here's more:
For me, wanting to have that same structure with the whole team, that was something I had some dreams about last night. It was exciting, though.
We cannot make this stuff up. Yet more:
Walker noted that the major difference for him was "Just trying to talk ‘team,’ instead of just defense. I don’t want the offensive guys to look at me as ‘you’re the interim, but you’re still a defensive guy.’ I want to make sure that I spread all of the lessons and whatever knowledge that I do have, spread it within the whole team."
Has a head coach ever sounded like this? It just doesn't sound like Walker even has a clue as to what to do as interim, let alone head coach. What does Walker know about the offense … so that he can "spread all of the lessons and whatever knowledge" he has to them? Well, here's the answer:
(DeWayne Walker) admitted it had been a long time since he’d watched an offensive practice. "Basically, I’m just walking around today doing certain parts of practice, just to hear them [offensive coaches] talk and hear them teach, not that I was trying to coach any of their positions. It was pretty cool just to see how they coach."
In his own words folks. Now isn't it obvious that we simply cannot hire another rookie like Walker to learn on the job?? We might just have to take this to another level as some DD readers have suggested.

Steve @ 12:16 am:
I think we need to send a strong, clear message to DG NOW. This guy should not even be considered. Let him go coach in Div 2 somewhere. NO MORE of this bs. Golly gee Mom I’m a head coach.
Steve
Brent @ 8:38 am:
I have to admit that Ive been trying to figure out what the offensive coaches were doing all season as well.
These comments show that hes not prepared for an interview, let alone any consideration for the HC position. Just imagine a candidate whos been at the school for 2 plus years and saying to the AD you dont know anything about the offense.
That is troubling.
John W. Reagan @ 9:17 am:
I would be a better head coach than Walker. I seriously doubt DG is really considering Walker. My best guess is that Walker is getting a courtesy interview, and nothing more will come of it.
tootsiescurly @ 9:25 am:
Again, how much money do you give to the UCLA Athletic Dept? Do you really think you have any kind of real influence with DG? Did you play any sport at UCLA or do you have any power connections at UCLA? Unfortunately, that is what this selection process may be all about.
About to Puke @ 9:42 am:
Tootsie - To answer your questions:
A little, no, yes, no.
VB @ 10:04 am:
NORM CHOW PEOPLE! NORM CHOW!
He needs to be our next head coach. Mike Leach is too expensive. Mariucci isn’t interested in the job. We need to go after Norm Chow and bring that amazing offensive mind to UCLA. He developed Steve Young, Matt Leinart and CArson Palmer. Just imagine the types of quarterbacks and receivers he will bring to UCLA. Remember, USC’s offense has not been the same since he left, and imagine the dagger it’ll put in Petey’s heart when we return to dominance with the very offensive coordinator he pushed away.
NORM CHOW… NORM CHOW…
BruinOC @ 11:25 am:
Cost of Interim Head Coach - $200,000.00
Cost of Firing your Head Coach - $2,000,000.00
DG reading this quote: “Wow, look at me, I sound like a real head coach now.”
Priceless…..
MET @ 11:31 am:
PAT HILL - FRESNO ST. FORGET ALL THE OTHER PATSY COACHES (WALKER, CHOW, JONES, LEACH). WE NEED A NEW IDENTITY AT UCLA, AND IT STARTS WITH A TOUGH COACH THAT HAS A PROVEN RECORD. PERIOD !
RISE UP @ 11:47 am:
Thank you VB. Kids, pay attention to the reasonable adults so you don’t get hurt on the monkey bars.
LA_Eagle786 @ 12:02 pm:
DeWayne Walker for head coach
RISE UP @ 12:19 pm:
Hey, if you guys want to see Norm Chow in action,he’s calling plays on the picture box right now.It will give you more to judge him by and maybe help your arguments on both sides.
MET @ 12:21 pm:
LOL
About to Puke @ 12:23 pm:
Whoops, I just fell off the jungle gym.
It’s the front runner DeWayne Walker still leading by a 1/2 length, Rick Neuheisel is starting to make his move and is second by a length, Norm Chow is starting to feel the whip but is backing up, Mike Leach is getting rubber legged, Brian Kelly is flying on the rail and, oh, my God, here comes Pat Hill with a tremendous charge in the middle of the track. It’ll be a photo finish, fans.
The winner is:
Kevin Sumlin……..in a major surprise! Dump Dorrell site posters are shocked!
Louis Miranda @ 4:08 pm:
I hear Dorrell is being considered for the Duke opening. Maybe they will figure out his complicated WCO and find a way to go 2-10 rather than 1-11. For that Dorrell will probably get a 5 year extension. Wuppie!
RISE UP @ 4:12 pm:
C’mon now ,no need to pile on anymore. He’s gone.
Louis Miranda @ 4:18 pm:
Your right RISEUP @4.12pm. That was a cheap shot on my part. Dorrell is history and enough said about him. My apologies.
Russ @ 4:48 pm:
THANK YOU Riseup!!! Hope others stop the bellyaching and give DG their thoughts about the next Head Coach without the degrading remarks.
RISE UP @ 5:15 pm:
If you want to get excited about potential candidates, google Brian Kelly and Norm Chow if you haven’t already done so.One thing you won,t find there is the fact that Brian Kelly has had the same offensive coordinator for 16 years .I don’t know that he has served him in that position for all those years but the continuity is impressive . I found some good info on him before this season started,it was in Phil Steele’s college football preview 2007 edition. It’s a good mag. with lots of info.Check it out if you can find one.
RISE UP @ 5:41 pm:
Ok Brian Kelly’s o.c. Jeff Quinn has been with him for that long but has held a variety of positions.
Doug @ 5:43 pm:
Neuhisel is out!!..I have UCLA Alum neighbor who talked to Rick this week…he is not interested(supposedly), but also part of his settlement with NCAA was not to coach D1 for 5 years, he has a year to go. Very Disappointed.
About to Puke @ 5:50 pm:
Well, I know this much. Phil Steele operates out of Cleveland. He is a huge Notre Dame fan, and he follows the Big-10 and football in the Ohio region very closely. I would love to see what he says about Brian Kelly.
One caveat though. A few years ago, Steele was ranting and raving about Rick Minter, another Cincinnati head coach who came to Cincy after a stint as DC at Notre Dame. He had a couple good years at Cincinnati out of the six years he was there, but never quite got the team over the hump against Louisville and East Carolina.
So, as an Ohio resident, I hope he doesn’t just routinely “go on and on” about coaches in that state without good reason. Kelly seems like the real deal, though.
RISE UP @ 6:00 pm:
The info I read was mostly factual numbers and career data.
About to Puke @ 6:04 pm:
I have occasion to talk to coaches around the country at various levels of competition. Without trying to make a total mess of this search process, I keep hearing one name being tossed about.
I am not trying to push this guy as a candidate because I know next to nothing about him. His name just keeps popping up as a guy who will eventually be heard from as a head coach.
Kevin Sumlin, an assistant under Bob Stoops at Oklahoma. You don’t suppose Guerrero will hire another coach that requires on-the-job training, do you?
RISE UP @ 6:05 pm:
Also , I believe Kelly is a Massachusettes native.
RISE UP @ 6:15 pm:
While I obviously don’t know what goes on in D.G.’s mind . I would be shocked if he went in that direction.
Lifelong Bruin fan @ 6:24 pm:
Very disappointing news about Neuheisel if true.
RISE UP @ 6:48 pm:
Neuheisel wasn’t going to happen anyway. His past troubles , justified or not, made him too risky a hire for D.G.
Bay Area Bruin @ 6:52 pm:
There is a reason why DG didn’t hire any of us to do the job searching for him… I have seen plenty of coaches with head coaching experience do horribly at big time schools, and I have seen plenty of coaches with no head coaching experience do great things at big time schools. Bob Stoops was never a head coach before Oklahoma, so maybe his assistant could have the same success? I think too much is being made of demanding a coach with previous head coaching experience.
Diego (Aka Bluebruin) @ 7:10 pm:
You see, Doug! That’s the kind of double speak that Rick Neheuisel proliferates. This past week, on the Joe Experience Radio show locally on AM 570, Joe MacDonald, who’s a friend of Rick, said that he was riding in teh car with Rick (Nehueisel apparently was home for some thing, but had to leave shortly after) and Rick told him personally that he wants to take the job, but that no one had contacted him; therefore, he couldn’t do anything until he was contacted.
If what you write above is true, Doug, which it likely is, that’s the kind of attitude that Rick Neheuisel is infamous for, and is what will ultimately make UCLA shy away from him even if he wants to do the job for no money at all.
About to Puke @ 7:30 pm:
Well, let’s hold on a second. When we actually hear Neuheisel address the coaching vacancy with his voice, not through someone else, then we can make comments. Until then, please realize…..the rumor mill is hot and heavy. Not just in LA. I’m hearing rumblings from all over the place.
