It’s Done … And A New Era Begins!!
We are overcome with so many thoughts right now … we are almost at a loss. We take no pleasure in firing a good man. But Karl Dorrell leaves UCLA over $6 million richer in just 5 years. As much as no person likes being fired, Karl Dorrell and his family will be fine. We do, however, take massive pleasure in knowing that our football program is alive again! We have a chance to make it great again as a new era begins.
At times we thought we'd not see this day for 20 years. At times we believed we had a Dorrellonahue. We wanted to give it up because it took way too much effort. But we stuck with this site for 2 years, and you stuck with site … and we all together helped change UCLA Football. Dan Guerrero made the decision, but you all made the environment for that critical decision possible.
This could be a watershed moment for UCLA football. Obviously it will depend greatly on who Guerrero hires next and the structure of the deal offered. And there are no guarantees. But with the right commitment, Dan Guerrero now has the opportunity to change the culture of mediocrity that has consumed our football program for decades. This is an exciting time and we will be with you through it.
There is much to cover in the coming weeks before we shut down for good. We will address in the immediate term Karl Dorrell's statement, his tenure and other important matters. First of which is who will be our next head coach?!! Give us your vote here!!
But before we get on with that talk … here it is … wait for it … THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!!!
UCLA Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero announced today that Karl Dorrell has been released from the position of head football coach, effective today. Guerrero will be available this afternoon at a 1:30 p.m. media conference in the Press Room of the J.D. Morgan Center.
"This was a very difficult decision for me," said Guerrero. "Karl has represented this program with dignity and class. He is a true Bruin and I respect what he has accomplished in his five years as our head coach, particularly off the field. But, at the end of the day, the focus has to be on results and I felt that a change was in the best interest for the future of our program."
A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
Dorrell, 43, has compiled a record of 35-27 in his five years as head coach, including a 6-6 record this season
Go Bruins!!!

YES!!! FOOTBALL IS BACK!!! DUD-RELL IS GONE!!!! YES!!!! YES!!!! LET ALL THE BRUIN FAITHFUL MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE TO THE LORD, WHO HAS THIS DAY GIVEN US ALL A GREAT BLESSING!!!!
ALLELUIA!!

OHHH my
ed @ 2:03 pm:
Bruin football won’t be back until they hire a coach who can bring it back. And the same guy who hired Dorrell is running this search.
I’d be surprised if Walker stays as DC if he is passed over (and they need to hire a head coach I think).
I’m sorry Dorrell didn’t work out. Seemed like a very decent dude who was in over his head.
Fred @ 2:11 pm:
I’m glad Guerrero didn’t drag this thing out.
I wish Karl Dorrell the best. He didn’t get the job done @ UCLA, but that doesn’t mean he won’t elsewhere in the future. Good luck to the guy.
Now the pressure is on Guerrero to MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE!
Scott @ 2:12 pm:
According to the Idaho Statesman, Peterson was quoted as not having been contacted nor being interested in the job:

December 03, 2007
1:39 p.m. — BSU coach Chris Petersen: No contact with UCLA, not interested
Boise State football coach Chris Petersen said Monday that he has not been contacted by UCLA, and has no interest in the Pac-10 coaching position.
The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday that UCLA was firing coach Karl Dorrell, and that Petersen was at the top of athletic director Dan Guerrero’s wish list. The Times reported that representatives on behalf of the UCLA athletic department have contacted Petersen.
Petersen, speaking at his regular weekly press conference on campus, said the Times report is false.
Petersen did say that one school has contacted him about a coaching position, though he declined to name the school. He said he wasn’t interested in that position, either.
Dorrell was fired Monday, two days after losing to crosstown rival Southern California in a game that decided the Pac-10 berth for the Rose Bowl. Dorrell went 35-27 in five years as coach, ending with a 6-6 record this season. His last day on the job was Monday, the school said.
UCLA will play BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22.
A national search for a new coach has started, Guerrero said.
Howland said the same once we fired Lavin I believe…
arriba ositos! @ 2:18 pm:
arriba los ositos!(go bruins) It’s time to put-up or shut-up. Are the bruins going to hire a real football coach and make ucla a football school or will they hire another nice guy like donahue. Get it done Guerrero or get lost! Go bruins
Wesley Espinosa @ 2:45 pm:
THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO UCLA IN FIVE YEARS. NO MORE B.S. DORRELL CALLS AND CONSERVATIVE CRAP. TIME FOR US TO HIRE SOMEBODY WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND SOMEBODYT WHO CAN WIN US A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. MAY KARL DORRELL’S LEGACY REST IN PEACE.
GO BRUINS
snorkeldorf @ 2:51 pm:
UCLA can make a bold statement for both its commitment to excellence as well as its commitment to promoting diversity in sport. Norm Chow has more than earned his shot and UCLA would be the ideal program.
Jake @ 2:57 pm:
To quote Gerald Ford’s Oval Office speech after Richard Nixon’s resignation, “Our long national nightmare is over . . . .”
Bruin Liu @ 3:03 pm:
Why does it seem like there is so much talk of Duh-rell being a nice guy? Lots of people seem almost apologetic that he’s gone. The standard response seems to be something along the lines of, “He seemed like a nice guy that, too bad it couldn’t work out for him.”
I don’t see why he’s perceived as a nice guy. What I see is someone who’s very quick to put the blame on anyone but himself. The last straw for me was him singling out Taylor in one of his quotes after the $c game. I’ve never seen a coach do that. Totally classless. Not what a nice guy would do at all.
DC Bruin @ 3:10 pm:
I always believed that Dorrell was our Paul Hackett - we had to go a step back in order to go two steps forward.
Angry Alum @ 3:20 pm:
All I want is to look forward to every fall Saturday with confidence, and not dread losing to whatever team the Bruins are playing.
All I want is for the Bruins to have respect in this town beyond the basketball team.
All I want is to beat the living bejesus out of that crappy school across town, or at least make a game of it, every year.
All I want is to play a real bowl game in January, not a consolation one in December.
All I want is to put that “gutty little Bruin” thing to rest forever.
All I want is for the Bruins to be in real contention for the national championship.
IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK???
Diego (aka Bluebruin) @ 3:32 pm:
I do not take joy in the termination of a decent man who is an alumnus of our fabulous institution. He is one of us, no question about it. This is the culmination of a systemic failure, and Karl Dorrell has served as the period to end the horrific sentence written by our administration.
I took joy in the termination of Peter Dalis, but I cannot replicate those feelings for Dorrell’s firing. There’s a degree of duality involved in all of this.
The duality stems from my overwhelming feelings of joy over the moment we have presented before us. What an EXCITING time this is. We’re about to topple nearly a half-century of mediocrity with the right hire. I’m excited about that. I trust Guerrero. He did it for bball; he has the ability to do it for Football. It’s all about crossing the administration, and he’s prepared to do it.
I want to extend a hearty thank you to the editors at DD. Your idea, its realization, and the manner in which you developed it has been exemplary. As a major contributor to the function of Loselavin.com, I say that your work has been impeccable! I thank you gentlemen.
I also thank all of you who posted in here, to make this community what it is- a great place for deliberation of ideas.
I want to also urge everyone to internalize the importance of what we’re facing. We cannot be complacent with the firing of Dorrell. This is all about changing the culture of mediocrity that the administration has imposed on us for decades. More attacks need to be delivered to the Administration through the encouragement of Guerrero’s efforts. I urge all of you to contact Guerrero and give him words of encouragement that will enable him to cross our traditionally cheap administration. Simultaneously, we need to contact the UCLA Administration to inform them that we support DG and that they’re to let him operate freely and provide him the proper money he will need to change the culture of mediocrity they created.
Tyler Lyon @ 3:54 pm:
My crack sources over at the LA Times just text messaged to inform me that T.J. Simers and Kurt Streeter are carpooling over to UCLA tonight to hold a candlelight vigil outside Dan Guerrero’s office. Then tomorrow things are going to get really wild. T.J. is bringing a bullhorn and Streeter will have a whipped cream pie. Once T.J. coaxes Geurrero out of his office with the bullhorn, Streeter’s going to throw the pie at Guerrero. After that, they’re heading over to the 570 AM offices with picket signs to see if they can get T.J. his radio gig back!!!
Peter @ 3:55 pm:
Good first step DG but a system isnt corrected until there is the right solution. Pop the bubbly, but come back to earth fast, we need DG to not choke and pick the safe over the right choice. The right choice? How can we even be arguing this. BRING SKIPPY BACK. that is if he is interested.
cliq @ 3:58 pm:
Now that the deed is done, no more disrespecting Karl!
suleepropaganda @ 4:06 pm:
i had heard something about norm chow being a legit canidate for the job from a supposed “insider” down at westwood…
it’d be nice to see walker get the job and be a co-defensive cordinator…but that won’t happen and is probably not the smartest thing. we need to legit head coach, someone who’s been there, someone who knows how to win championships. someone that can put ucla bruin football back on the map, back in the national spotlight….
in a positive way.
J @ 4:07 pm:
There are really very few reasons to continue to look at the Dorrell era save to prevent a repeat of the past.
Scott @ 4:08 pm:
Why? Becasue he is such a good guy that throws his players and assistant coaches under the bus???
Daily Bruin @ 4:13 pm:
Please No Marriucci!
He runs an ultra-conservative West Coast Offense. His Offense would be worse than Dorrell’s. He Offense was mediocre with Steve Young at QB. We need to open things up on Offense.
This is not the type of coach we need!
Tom @ 4:16 pm:
I just hope whoever coaches the Bruins next year,
PLEASE CHANGE THE ROAD JERSEYS BACK TO NAVY BLUE AND GOLD!!!
IF YOUR READING THIS DG…CHANGE THEM BACK!!!
BuckeyeBruin @ 4:24 pm:
Yeah!!! Now maybe we’ll actually WIN our bowl game! I really hope our players get pumped and attack BYU instead of cowering with their usual deer-in-the-headlights look.
Dorrell and his family are set for life. They can live off the interest of their $6M (or whatever it is) nest egg.
alx324 @ 4:46 pm:
Is there anyway you guys can change the site to dump TJ Simers?
DM @ 5:01 pm:
What about Pat Hill from Fresno State being a candidate? He’s from Southern California (UC Riverside). Played Center at UCR, has been successfull at Fresno State, and has the head coaching experience. Pat’s also done pretty well against BCS teams, in non-conference play, considering the talent he’s had. It would be a perfect step up for him, and UCLA probably wouldn’t have to pay him a top rate pay. He’s also had a few Academic All-Americans during his tenure, and that goes a long way for program standards.
BruinOC @ 5:37 pm:
I saw something on eirher SI, ESPN or Sporting News in regards to Spurrier (South Carolina - SEC) being unhappy(and the school has mixed results), and a blogger wrote that the opening at UCLA would probably interest him (since he likes the sun/coast).
BruinOC @ 5:40 pm:
Again - this was taken off a blog post - then again, what does anyone know about who’s been contacted and what coaches (currently employed) feel about the job opening.
If a ‘current coach’ is interessted (but preparing for a ‘Bowl Game’), we may not know until ‘AFTER’ the Bowl Season (which is Feb. or March - maybe April)…
Tom @ 5:59 pm:
Damn…I just hope he doesn’t wait to see what DW does in the bowl game to decide to hire him…he’s better off as a DC
SMZ @ 6:05 pm:
Spurrier is a golf nut, so if we can offer him a membership at Riveria Country Club, I think we’re set. One quick note on Steve Mariucci — he’s a West Coast offense guy…. so that should rule him out. I’ve heard Neuheisal is radioactive, so he has no chance either. Now, if we could just build a stadium on campus, we could probably get anyone we wanted in the nation.
anthony @ 6:33 pm:
I had some trOJan fans come up to me today and laugh in my face, i heard things like “how long is SuC better than UCLA? 24/7″ I simply turned and smiled, said a polite “congratulations you beat a team you were supposed to who has a lame excuse for a coach, the jokes on you buddy” and walked away. A new era is coming, one where UCLA will not only be #1 in basketball, but football too. Go Bruins
Fred @ 6:40 pm:
For those of you who are sensitive to coaches who throw coaches & players under the bus, YOU DO NOT WANT Spurrier.
He’s thrown asst coaches, QB’s and other players “under the bus” on many occasions during press conferences @ S.Carolina.
Trojan Buster @ 6:41 pm:
Maybe it’s time to tender Pete Carroll an offer? Wouldn’t that be good? Seriously, Dorrell will most likely take another job with a less prestigious program, take his licks and learn so he can rise again somewhere else. He came in with little to no experience and did a decent job, but when you are at a big time program in the national spotlight like UCLA, learning on the job is not going to cut it. I wish him well as he did run the program very respectfully and was competitive, but he couldn’t put us in the elite, where a school like UCLA should be, year in and year out.
Trojan Buster @ 6:52 pm:
Steve Superior? No way. I don’t think I could look at myself in the mirror as a Bruin fan and want that. He’s a douche. I would look to a mid-major with a coach with a good track record and a proven ability to win. Maybe the guy from App State would be a good choice? To go to the Big House and beat Michigan? Sign that guy up.
Miles @ 6:57 pm:
Is it safe to assume that Norvell will be gone with Dorrell?
Nick @ 7:05 pm:
I AGREE!!! People always make fun of UCLA for not picking one shade of blue. I think we should go w/ navy blue all the way!!
Tustin Bruin @ 7:07 pm:
I sure hope so Miles, what a brillant hire that was!!! WCO coordinator from Callahan’s Nebraska. This was one of Dorrell’s biggest mistakes, let’s keep replacing the OC each year.
Bruins095 @ 7:21 pm:
It’s finally done!!!!!!! Shut it down.
BRUINWOOD @ 7:25 pm:
We can all breath a sigh of relief that DG had the sense to admit his mistake in hiring KD, even though many people who knew KD before he became the Bruins HC said that his personality was not suited for the job 5 YEARS AGO!!
HOWEVER, going from the frying pan into the fire will backfire on everyone–fans, alums (I have 2 UCLA degrees which I value for their recognized academic excellence), and DG himself. Whoever becomes HC must be able to recruit players who might not meet the increasingly higher standards that the ivory-tower types want to impose on UCLA athletics (without intending to boast, my BA was given Summa Cum Laude so I am strongly committed to a quality academic environment but am realistic about the players needed to run a top-notch Div. IA program).
A friend and former UCLA starting defensive player circa the early 90’s (under TD) has told me that M. Lynch and D. Jackson would have come to UCLA but for the overly stringent academic standards that kept them out and led them to Bezerkly. A new coach who cannot get the players he needs, will not turn the football program around, let alone compete with you all know who across town! So before the reveling dies down, consider addressing this issue to the “suits” at UCLA, particularly in the Chancellor’s office.
NOTE: when the Chancellor at Bezerkly changed a few years ago and the decision to recruit and retain Tedford was made, the Bezerkly chancellor was fully behind seeing Cal football flourish (unfortunately for the Bears, the flourishing has floundered).
In short, we need to start getting the best players not only in SoCal but across the country and give them the opportunity to play for and study at UCLA so the new coach ??? has the tools to work with.
GO BRUINS!!!!!!
Real USC Fan @ 8:16 pm:
This Web Site made the difference. Congrats to you all and now us SC fans will have to worry about UCLA again!
T.T. @ 8:25 pm:
Get Norm CHow
Bruin Elite @ 8:40 pm:
Now all we need is a a big name coach big QB recruit who is not 28 years old and washed up then we can make it all happen
Steve G. @ 9:31 pm:
Can you say Larry Coker,a big name with serious credentials. He has a national championship under his belt and is available.Keep coach walker as defensive coach hire a new offensive coordinator and we are off and running. Back to the Rose Bowl and finally to a national championship and in Bcs chase every year.
GO BRUINS GO BRUINS GO BRUINS

Perhaps now I’ll hold on to my 7 season tickets, but I think I’ll wait until the new head coach is announced.
Dave @ 10:00 pm:
Why anyone would press for Neuheisel is beyond me. In his 3rd season in Colorado he had as many losses as any of the previous 10 years at that school. It was the first losing season at Colorado since 1983! And that 5-6 season ended up as 0-11 since they forfeited all their games due to an ineliglible player. Sure, he went 8-4 the next season but only 4-4 in conference. Is that what would pass as acceptable? And don’t bring up Washington, his last two seasons were 8-4 then 7-6 (with a wonderful 4-4 record in conference again). That guy was on the hot seat in Washington, betting or no betting.
His overall record is good, but look closer, every team he has coached was on its way down when he left. We didn’t suffer through Dorrell just to get average.
wmm @ 10:06 pm:
All I can say is thank you, DumpDorrell.com. Without you there would have been no way that Morgan Center would have understood the depth of the dissatisfaction.
You actually had a game plan; you executed it; you used the calendar wisely; you spread the field; if circumstances changed, you were adept enough to make halftime adjustments; and you used your passion to inspire the team. Why, I think you’re our 2007 MVP.
buycker @ 10:37 pm:
All the comments are well taken. But now we are bringing Mike Martz and Mike Shula into the mix? They were busts at their last jobs. I could see Don Shula before son Mike. If we can’t get someone in his prime, then let’s at least get somebody on the way up, rather than on the way down, like Mooch…before you know it, someone will suggest Lou Holtz.
Jeez, guys…
Redman @ 10:48 pm:
Alas! But it never should have taken this long. I said it the day Dorrell was hired — just like running a multi-faceted business enterprise these days you never ever ever never never ever give an inexperienced unproven person a key leadership role. The result is nearly alway failure. And. The person who gave that job away to is the REAL PROBLEM. UCLA’s Althletic Director must also be FIRED! If this is not done more horribly costly mistakes are bound to happen. Fresh blood yes, but Experienced Blood, A DEAD Reckoning
buycker @ 10:50 pm:
Coker is a doof. He can’t even wear his hat right. Or he can’t figure out the right size.
alx324 @ 11:23 pm:
lets not suggest that Mike Martz is a coaching canidate. he’ll get the QB killed just look at how many times Kitna hits the turf.

Larry Levit @ 12:26 am:
I was a camper at Bruin Woods during week 2. Karl showed up right after he was hired wearing a Maroon golf shirt
We chanted Take it off He had no clue what we were saying and someone ran to the Store and got him a Bruin Woods t shirt
He was clueless It was a sign
Dorrell Hates Me @ 4:26 pm:
All good points on the Mikes.
It just occurred to me that Jeff Tedord is the guy. Tedford!!!!!!
Cal stinks and will always suck because its Cal. The Tree Huggers are getting in the way for new facilities.
Here in the Bay Area press, they have always expressed concern that Jeff would leave without the resources and facilities. Guess what Jeff??? We got them!!!
Jeff, trade in your Prius for a Hummer and head down Highway 5. If you need encouragement, just think Dorrell beat you.
Tom @ 4:35 pm:
Martz is an idiot. He makes nothing but stupid decisions.
About to Puke @ 4:46 pm:
It has become increasingly clear after monitoring this site all day that virtually every coach candidate we mention has a downside as well as some positives.
I guess the best we can do is hope Guererro makes an informed decision with establishing a winning program at UCLA as his primary goal.
Let’s hope the right decision is made. I’m getting too old to wait much longer to see that scrunched-up look on Carroll’s face as we kick his ass.
Billy Boy 72 @ 11:57 pm:
Mariucci would be a Massive Mistake. Here in the SF Bay Area, he destoyed the Bears, created pandemonium in the 49ers, and went to Detroit to continue his incompetence.
I’ll never forget in a 49er playoff game, 43 seconds before 1/2 time, 49ers down by 7, good field position, 2nd and about 5, and what does Mooch do? He decides to forget the first half and runs to the locker room.
You want a coach like that? Really?
Forget about Mariucci. We 49er fans are still trying to.
