Dorrell’s Record As UCLA Football Coach
It all is so right … the Dorrell era coming to an end. We will be playing in the Las Vegas bowl … the same bowl we got an invitation to the year Bob Toledo was fired. The symmetry is nice. There hasn't been this much excitement in UCLA football since 1998. People are excited about the replacements for Dorrell, vote here, and potentially heralding a new era of excellence. The money is also there to make it happen!
We will not know today about Dorrell's fate officially apparently, although we are getting conflicting reports on that score. Dan Guerrero does have plans to meet with Dorrell this morning, according to Robert Kuwada OCR. What happens next is anyone's guess, but a couple of sources have Guerrero waiting until after the Wednesday night season banquet. Waiting really doesn't make sense to us but those are the reports. There is no doubt however that Dorrell is gone.
We thought we'd offer The List of Dorrell's record as UCLA head coach, updated, just in case there are some wackos out there who still think UCLA football is where it needs to be with Dorrell at the helm (HT to Fox71 at BruinsNation, also a Bruin Ad contributor). Here it is, the final word (and we are keeping it short):
Reasons To Dump Dorrell (updated as of 12/01/07)
- 1-4 against Southern Cal.
- No Pac-10 championships.
- No BCS bowl games.
- 1-11 on the road against teams with a winning record.
- 6th best overall record in Pac-10 during his 5 years.
- 4th best conference record in Pac-10 during his 5 years.
- Average 4th in conference standings during his 5 years, peaking at 3rd and doing that only once.
- Worst starting 3- AND 4-year records of any UCLA football coach since WW2.
- 2nd worst record of any UCLA football coach in our entire history who coached more than 3 years.
- Worse winning percentage (.5645) than Bob Toledo (.603) and worst since Bill Barnes (.541), both of whom was fired.
- 5-13 against ranked teams.
- 4-9 against top 10 teams.
- Only 7 conference wins against teams who finished over .500.
- 24-18 against Pac-10 teams.
- 11-19 against teams with a winning record.
- 14 losses to unranked teams.
- Losing record after October, 7-15.
- Embarrassing losses to Wyoming, Fresno State, Arizona, Southern Cal, Utah, Notre Dame.
- Revolving door for assistant coaches (25 in 5 years).
- 4 OCs in 5 years, 4 OL coaches in 5 years.

The official press release for the LV Bowl on the UCLA website quotes Dorrell. That seems to imply that he is hanging around… at least for the Bowl game.
Tom @ 9:17 am:
Two Words…. Steve Mariucci!!!

Alright Bruins, I just submitted the above story to digg.com. If you aren’t already registered on digg you should. The more “diggs” a story receives the more hits it gets. The more hits it gets, the more people will see it. It’s particularly important THIS link gets dugg because there are 20 reasons UCLA is justified in firing Karl Dorrell and *not a single one* of those reasons is “because he is black”.
Registering is a simple process, it’ll take you less than five minutes and the payoff is huge.

And duh, here’s the digg link:

One reason other reason for not hiring mooch is he would basically use ucla as a springboard to get back to the nfl. The other reason is he would run a wco. Lane Kiffins name has been mentioned as a canidate it would take a ton of money to have leave an nfl gig to go back to college football I don’t think he would make that move. As far as Rick Neuheisal no doubt he can coach , but again he comes with a lot of baggage.
Tommy Bruin @ 10:52 am:
It’s all about Johnson.

Something in the program to get excited about now…..Now, who is the replacement? Does Walker get retained as DC, as has been suggested by the media? If so, might be a difficult sell to an incoming coach that he can’t reshape the entire staff…
jon udell @ 1:13 pm:
thank you, dump dorrell. you fought the good fight. god bless you for your efforts. my 6 yr exile not truly over until we know the replacement. and we didnt even have to buy a billboard!
Javier @ 1:28 pm:
The new coach should be allow to bring in his own DC. As much as I like Walker; he must audition for the DC job. Even if his feelings are hurt. But who knows. The new coach night already know about Walker and keeps him here.
colonybruin @ 1:35 pm:
“your next danny-boy”.com ___O K now all we need is a name change __ so how about some suggestions on our new site name __ the problem is that danny-boy has very low standards and expectations , and is paranoid about covin’ his ass ___ so we need to continue to stay on danny-boy’s back ___ so how about ” your next danny-boy”.com ?
jeff @ 1:38 pm:
Walker should stay as D.C. Ucla officials know how god he is and that’s why they want him to stay! We are ranked 30th in the natiin in total defense, and that’s with how pathetic our offense has been moving the ball and not giving our defense a rest! Can u imagine how much better our defense would have been had our offense sustained drive, ate some of the clock up and didn’t keep our defense on the field every game!? With an offense that will move the ball and keep our defense rested, our defense will be awesome for years to come! Also, the new coach should start Forcier at Q.B. We need a mobile quarterback like Cade McNown and someone who can create when there is no-where to pass! Sound off Bruin Fans!?
Bruce Nagy @ 1:42 pm:
I take no pleasure in seeing decent people fired…..but, as I wrote yesterday, I was both angered and saddened watching Patrick Cowan, Brandon Breazell and Chris Markey getting physically destroyed because of a technically unsound offense. KD will have a $2 mill check to ease his pain….Patrick will now need a second knee brace to ease his….I hope Chris Peterson accepts.
PS…..if there are any Cal fans that read this board, Jeff Tedford is being paid nearly $2 mill a year. That man is NO GENIUS….where did he get that reputation? Think KD beat him three times at the Rose Bowl!!!!!
asiansportsfanatic @ 1:55 pm:
Bruce, I agree with you in that I hate seeing decent people getting fired, but what I hate even more is seeing someone that cannot coach, coaching at UCLA. This should never ever happen.
As for replacements, please don’t pick Mariucci. He was terrible at CAL and with the 49ers. If Petersen says no, then I would suggest Slick Rick Neuheisel.
Big Moe @ 1:58 pm:
You guys have been asbolutely amazing! Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen! I did e-mail all the “higher-ups” at UCLA, per your request. I was very polite…no ranting or raving. Asked them to fix football with a responsible HC, as they did with the brilliant move of Ben Howland with basketball. This is a great day in Bruin land! Boy, what a month…Duh-rell fired & new coach coming in…fun place to go for a bowl game - Las Vegas -…and my Hawaii Warriors are going to the Sugar Bowl! NOW THAT’S AN OFFENSE THAT DUH-RELL CAN LEARN FROM!!!!

Barry @ 5:26 pm:
To instantly be able to compete with Pete, ucla should hire Rick Neuheisel. No other available ex-coach will give the program a greater shot in the recruiting game. He’ll also provide a major increase in intensity, an ingredient seemingly missing for some time.

Peter White @ 9:10 am:
As an Alumni of the University of Washington I would hire Rick Neuheisel in a “New York Second”. He got a raw deal at the U of W and was really a great coach and the players really liked him. He took the NCAA to the cleaners for false charges against him and the U of W football program. He would still be our coach if our AD wouldn’t have lost her guts and turned the gun on Neuheisel in an attempt to save herself.
