More Obits: Daily Breeze, Trev Alberts(!)
Dorrell's final days are being written up by more sports columnists and dare we say even the guy who has the biggest man-crush on Dorrell, Trev Alberts. Let's start with Daily Breeze writer Mike Waldner (HT to Nestor at BruinsNation):
Coach (Dorrell) has had ample time to demonstrate his strengths and weaknesses. Not even a win Saturday will save him from a pink slip.
You should have a read of Waldner's entire piece. It is a well thought out objective analysis of Dorrell's tenure. Waldner lays out the case as to why even beating SuC is not enough:
Dorrell's run is coming to an end for a number of reasons. His body of work is below standards set by Guerrero when he was hired.
His teams are consistently inconsistent. In a season made extremely difficult by injuries, it is not possible to ignore losses to weak Utah and Notre Dame teams. His recruiting, generally ranked good, has produced 13 wins against 11 losses over the past two seasons. His constant harping on the time needed for players to understand his complex offense indicates lack of understanding how to tailor his playbook to his players. His trail of fired coordinators is a matter of concern.
Nicely done. Even Trev Alberts finally admits that "his sources" (what a joke) are telling him Dorrell is gone even if he beats SuC. Oh well, now that the Trevster is reporting it we can close up shop. But one beat reporter is not closing up shop. Brian Dohn of the Daily News is still fighting the good fight .. still trying to Save Dorrell as the bell tolls:
According to interviews with some of the (recruits who went elsewhere) and sources who asked for anonymity, UCLA was a prime choice for them. But the coaching staff had to cease recruiting them because of academic issues that would keep them from getting into UCLA.
While Bruins coach Karl Dorrell is asked to compete with USC, Oregon, Arizona State and Cal on the field, the playing field is heavily skewed when it comes to recruiting.
Give it up Brian. UCLA has had great teams throughout the years despite our academics. This is the worst attempt to save a coach in recent memory. The Streeter race-baiting piece, TJ Simers calling on Pete Carroll to defend Dorrell, and now the academic excuse. With friends like these who needs enemies. Go Bruins!!

Kurt,
I’m a lifetime UCLA fanatic and a long time sports radio host, locally and nationally.
I became a UCLA fan because my Mom pointed out at a very young age, that UCLA gave people of all races and religions a chance, while other schools did not.
The first basketball game that my dad took me to, the USC cheerleaders were all blond and blue eyed, while UCLA had cheerleaders of various ethnic groups. This instilled, even deeper, my Mom’s thoughts.
Now in my fifties, I have never wandered off that political bent…..
However, I’m sorry, but Karl Dorrell has not proven to me he is ready to coach at UCLA…You also should understand that I hounded Terry Donahue so much, he once asked me on the air at KABC,” Why do you despise me so much?”
With that said, even Donahue never lost 66-19 to USC, 52-14 to Arizona, never lost to Fresno St, and would not have lost 44-6 to Utah or would not have lost to this season’s version of the Fighting Irish..Dorrell had to have Rashan ready in that game, with Olson already out…That was simply bad management…
While we’re on the subject, where has Karl been hiding Mathew Slater for 3.5 years?
How many assistants has he hired and then let go?
Bottom line, he’s not up to the task at hand and the GPA argument does not hold water, because other coaches have also lived with that requirement.
Finally, and I wanted you to know my side of the debate, I co host Sports Overnight America, every Friday night on www.sportsbyline.com and about fifty stations coast to coast..How would you like to make an appearance tonight at about 10.20 PM PST and join John Woolard and myself? The timing is obviously perfect..
Please, let me know if you can do it..
Thanks,
Fred Wallin
PS..If you want you can ask Bill Dwyre about me…
