Dump Dorrell

Will Karl Dorrell Sue UCLA For Discrimination??

Has it come to this?? We at DD would have never thought so before yesterday evening.  Now that Karl Dorrell played the race card and said that he hasn't "gotten a fair shake" and that he has not been given "a level playing field" he opens the possibility of suing UCLA for discrimination.

Say all you want about race-baiter and tabloid "journalist" Kurt Streeter of the LAT dressing up a potentially out-of-context quote into a race debate.  Say all you want about Dorrell possibly bettering his bargaining position with regard to his severance package or even keeping his job.  But one fact remains immutable:  Karl Dorrell ANSWERED the race question of his own accord.

We all know Karl Dorrell is horrible with interviews.  However, he has been at this job for 5 years now and he has been in college football for over 2 decades.  He has been a black man all his life.  Dorrell should know better than just about anyone that answering the race question with anything other than a "I won't go there" or "race is not the issue here" invites a debate on whether his employer has not given him "a fair shake" because he is black.  There is no getting around the fact that Karl Dorrell made the decision to engage in a destructive and irresponsible, not to mention deceitful, debate that damages UCLA.  And it is the kind of quote that leads to discrimination lawsuits (Nolan Richardson).

Karl Dorrell, as we have long said, was given an opportunity no coach with his experience deserved.  Much like Lavin, he was doomed to fail because he accepted a job he was completely unqualified for.  Lavin spited UCLA fans during his downfall but even he never stooped to this level.  For all that UCLA has done for Karl Dorrell, it is unthinkable to be seeing him go to this extreme.

Karl Dorrell needs to come out publicly immediately and quell the rage in Bruin Nation regarding his comments.  He needs to publicly state that UCLA has given him a great opportunity that most coaches would never get in their lifetime … that UCLA has given him every opportunity to succeed and that he is grateful.  Dorrell needs to remove the cloud of suspicion he has placed over the greatest legacy of diversity of any university in the world - a university that gave the nation and world Jackie Robinson and Ralph Bunche.  Dorrell needs to make it clear he is not leveraging a potential discrimination lawsuit in an ugly scornful game of bettering his bargaining position.

colonybruin @ 1:49 pm:

when talking to the media. Saying things like he hasn’t gotten a fair shake, and making obvious allusions to race are all on him. He made a comment to T. J. Simers along these lines as well.

I’ve said it before: KD is highly race conscious. He used it to help him get this job, and he’s using it in a desperate attempt to keep it. Posted by TJJ / Bruinzone

TommyBruin @ 2:12 pm:

So much for DUH-rell being a man of “integrity.” After this, the “sure he loses, but he’s a good guy” attitude definitely does not hold water. Implying that UCLA is racist in how it’s treated him makes me sick.

Doug @ 2:34 pm:

NO ROSE BOWL!!!

Why do so many KD defenders still think we have a shot at the Rose Bowl. There is absolutely no scenario in which we go. Even if ASU loses last two games, they have tie breaker since they beat us.

KD defenders are dreamers, don’t have their facts straight and continue to grasp at straws.

Louis Miranda @ 4:00 pm:

I told you guys almost one month ago that this was about race and some of you let me have it, saying I was way off base that race in this day and age has nothing to do with Dorrell getting fired or keeping his job. Well what do you say now? We may be stuck with this loser for a long long time,at least until his contract runs out in 2011. Just as I suspected all along the administration and Dan Guerrero are scared to fire this guy because he is black yet none of these writer’s like Streeter give the Ad any credit for hiring this unqualified moron in the first place. As long as black coaches threaten to sue and play the race card when they are about to be fired, then why would anyone want to take a chance in the future on a black coach if this is the possible backlash.I have no respect for Dorrell if he does sue the university but my educated guess is the administration doesn’ have the nuts to fire this loser. I ask anybody out there; What is it going to take? a 3-9 season? maybe a 2-10 season! Hey we have 5 more games with usc until his contract runs out; how about 0-5 against sc ? will that do the trick? How about it Streeter,Foster TJ Simers (the hypocrite)will that be enough for you ass-h**les?

BuckeyeBruin @ 4:05 pm:

TJ Simers doesn’t fool me for a minute. This is the same jerk who used to call mock Dorrell and call him names every week, and now he’s championing his retention?!? He just wants to watch SC go another 8-1 run over UCLA.

Bruin for a new coach @ 5:43 pm:

Both Nebraska and Michigan will be looking for new coaches in a few weeks. The competition for a proven winner with head coach experience will be most difficult. The University of Californisa bureaucracy is slow to move. Now is the time to meet with Jim Fassel, Dennis Green, Marv S. even Rick N. Norm Chow may even want revenge.

zenbruin @ 5:58 pm:

UCLA wins the PAC-10 in a 4 way tiebreaker that’s how!!!

UCLA, USC, ORE, ASU all finish 6-3 and we would be 2-1 vs. the others along with ORE and would have beaten ORE.
SC and ASU would be 1-2 vs. the other tied teams.

And for that to happen we have to beat a Dixon-less OU team at home, SC beats ASU and then ASU loses to a charging AZ team the next week that would love to knock them out. The biggest test will be beating SUC again at their dump.

So KD can still win the Pac-10 at 7-5 and we would be off to the Rose Bowl and no way does he get fired. ASU winning one more game prevents that from happening.

JM Bruin @ 7:20 pm:

I read the article by a blood sucking Fish-Hack named Kurt Streeter. I think DD needs to go after him as well, becaues if that’t the type of BS that the Times is going to print then we need to call them out on this as well! No one here has called this a Race issue, It’s a Karl Duh-rell issue!! I think Kurt “A Smith” Streeter needs to be Fired alongside his Brain Dead Buddy Duh-rell! And my take to him and Simers and the rest of the Pencil Jockeys is that this is a UCLA and it’s Alumni and Fan’s deal! At this point I don’t want the “Outsiders” writing about it or giving their opinions, because it’s overwhelmingly appearent that WE want DUH-RELL GONE! And when you have a vested interest and have to live the Scarlet letter that UCLA Football is,… we deserve a change, we deserve BETTER, and I won’t accept 6-6 every year, I won’t except being bottom half of the Pac-10, I won’t accept anything less than being a nationaly ranked program and a threat to win it all, and if KARL DUH-RELL

But after 5 years of mediocrity and 5 years of pain, there is enough data to prove to me that he CAN’T!
So give me and the rest of Bruin Nation a new Coach, no matter what COLOR, just give me… a WINNER!

Bruski32 @ 7:53 pm:

If Dufus thinks that he has not gotten a fair shake and the playing field is anything but level all because of race, let me remind him of something. Mike Riley might think that HE didn’t get a fair shake and the HE was on a decidely unlevel playing field. How else do you explain a major university like UCLA giving the HC job to someone with NO HC expierence, none. Not at D - 1, 2,or even 3, not in JC or even HIGH SCHOOL !!! You want to play the race card Karl ? Well remeber to play it BOTH ways. I’m sure that it had a lot to do with you getting the job in the first place.
The fact that after 5 years, you have a worse winning percentage than the man you were to replace might have alot more to do with you getting fired than race. Go back to the pros and next time you come to college, go somewhere else.

Bruce Nagy @ 9:07 pm:

I realize everyone is upset….screw Streeter and Simers….I believe Dorrell needs to be dismissed no matter what happens the rest of the year…..if he loses to Oregon and USC, he WILL be dismissed. If he beats Oregon and USC and goes to the Emerald or Vegas Bowls, he will be retained. If he goes 6-6, I still think he will be fired. Then, next year, after losses to Fresno, Tennessee and BYU (44-6?), DUMP DORRELL will start again in a major way. Unless there is something going on internally of a racial fashion, all UCLA would have to point to are Guerrero’s comments after firing Bob Toledo, the white guy. Toledo performed better than KD…..by the way, I believe we will end up 5-7. Have you noticed that Toledo has taken Tulane off the 1-11 scrap-heap and could also end 5-7….with a handful of returning starters, Tulane led LSU 9-7 in the third quarter before losing!!!!!!

LawrenceSFBruin @ 11:30 pm:

Everyone at DD,

Here we go… now dip—t Dorrell is so goddamn desperate, he’s throwing the kitchen sink: Threatening the $UC-O.J.- I’m a VICTIM card. Interestingly, he doesn’t seem to mention that the determining factor for IDIOT GUERRERO hiring his unqualified ass was because of race. I’ve stated this before, Guerrero thought he was hiring the “next genius black Jeff Tedford” for UCLA… but he was DEAD WRONG. (Just go back and read the Daily Bruin right after IDIOT GUERRERO made his disastrous decision.) Tedford had coached quarterbacks at Fresno State and ran the offense at Oregon; he was himself a quarterback in his playing days. Steve Gladstone, the A.D. at UCB, who wisely hired Tedford saw that Tedford was a leader, and a QUALIFIED one at that. CAL has finally begun a new golden age (yes, this year is not a good one for them), after not having one since Eisenhower entered the White House.

The point of all this is simple: Hey Guerrero, own up to YOUR MISTAKE. Fire Dorrell. Any penalties UCLA (unjustly) accrues should be paid out of IDIOT GUERRERO’s salary.

If Guerrero remains gutless, we need to do to him what NEBRASKA did to their idiot A.D. Pederson (for hiring Callahan and giving him an extension for destroying their program): Fire Guerrero. Only when Guerrero knows that he’s on the hot seat, will he finally gather the courage (out of desperation to save his own ass) to correct his own MORTAL ERROR.

Everybody keep turning up the HEAT!!!

John W. Reagan @ 9:39 am:

Race won’t save Dorrell, he’s just a bad coach. End of story. Black, white, green or purple, it does not matter. As they say, the results are on the scoreboard. If Dorrell want’s to have any kind of coaching future, he won’t even go there!

Tom Scheerer @ 11:08 am:

I can’t believe anyone reads T. J. Simers. Does he do anything other than humiliate his family members?

Phil Ruland @ 11:46 am:

I have always thought Karl Dorrell to be a man of charcter, a decent individual, however, after reading Sunday’s L.A. Times piece by Kurt Streeter, I am close to changing my mind. In taking the UCLA head coaching position, Dorrell knew that he would be expected to field a winning team. A football team that plays consistently well and that shows progress toward making a major bowl game. Well, 5 years later we haven’t had so much as a sniff at a quality bowl game. What we have had is mostly underachieving, mediocre and wildly inconsistent play. Now, for Dorrell to play the race card with Streeter is a shameless tactic. A ploy not worthy of a response from the A.D. Coach Dorrell should disavow such inflammatory words immediately if he is to have any chance of coaching elsewhere after he is long-gone from UCLA. And, believe me, he will soon be a long-gone from Bruinland.

Diego @ 1:29 pm:

If he’s goign to attack UCLA in this fashion, then he knows that he’s going to be fired. I agree that this is upsetting, because it shows UCLA in a poor light, but you kow what? Fook the lighting. I want this guy gone! anyone that knows anything about UCLA knows that we’re not a racist institution. This won’t sell at the national level. The Newspapers have always been against us, so this doesn’t bother me at all.

KD attacking the university and attempting to embarrassment is a direct attack. This only helps out our cause of removing KD!!!

Diego @ 1:31 pm:

To play the race card at this point is a sign that all forces are aligning against him at the Administration. He knows he’s going to be fired, so he’s trying to save his job any way that he can.

I see this as a bit of good news.

cv @ 1:55 pm:

Can anyone tell me how Tedford can get paid over 4 million in 2013?

John H @ 2:15 pm:

I have always felt Karl Dorrell conducted himself with integity and was overall a decent man who simply does-not have the skill and leadership ability to coach at this level.
Perhaps I was WRONG!! If Dorrell decides to play the”race
card” when it comes to his tenture with UCLA, he is not only a loser on the field, but also lacks the integity I thought he had! Anyone who has followed UCLA football over the years
can see the inconsistency in his teams, followed by lack of
intensity and excution on the road..And we can go ON and ON and ON!! Give us a coach with experience and a unyeilding will to WIN, and push the BRUINS into the elite class of college football and I don’t care what color they are, what religion they practice, what language they speak, or where they were born..Message to Karl, show some dignity and integity!!
