Here Are The Daily Bruin Ads: Awaiting Final Approval

Editor's Note:  We have 5 Daily Bruin ad placements.  The first ad is a half-pager on Monday. We will have ads after Oregon and after SuC. We dont want to say exactly when so that there are no Save Dorrell ads in competition. We will let you know the day before.

The Daily Bruin ads are now complete!  The only thing remaining is final approval from the editor and whomever makes the decisions on ad copy.  We got word that the draft copy was ok with them, but you never know.  There were 46 Bruin fans (make that 47 now), after some requested and received refunds, who stepped up and made this happen.  They not only talked the talk, they walked the walk.

On to the copy.  Below are 2 ad types, obviously not to scale. The first is the copy for the 1/2 page ad (the 1/4 pager looks the same only shorter and wider) and the second is the copy for the 1/8 pager.  We kept the large quote font for the 1/8 pager because it stands a better chance of getting noticed.  The DB initially wanted the same large quote font for the other 2 ad sizes but it detracted from the ad in our opinion.  Here they are, fire away with your thoughts:

Here is the 1/8 pager.

DD:

Truly excellent work!

I wonder how many of us are being solicited by UCLA for contributions? I know I am always getting hit on by the Anderson School of Business and every time I get one of those leters, the following reply gets stuffed in the SASE:

Buddy:

Fire Karl Dorrell and then I will consider contributing!

Jim @ 5:23 pm:

Rooting against my beloved Bruins is not easy. If I was assured that DG would go too, I would root twice as hard. This is called tough love.

DumpDorrell @ 6:30 pm:

William … nice!!

yooklafan @ 6:35 pm:

Seeing it how it will print gives me mixed feelings but I blame DG for that, if he had already come out and said KD was gone after the year there would be no need for the ad, it;s just having a lot of friends that have played sports at UCLA, and as a former college athlete myself its one thing to slite them online or even a billboard quite another when u see it in the daily bruin, I support the cause just kind of feel bad for these players as we must remember they are still amature athletes, but I see it is necessary just different when its actually in front of u.
I just hope this comes to an end soon for KD

Ric @ 6:54 pm:

As Dorrell would say, “It is what it is.” The ad’s just state the truth. I too hate that it has come to this point, but what other alternative is there? Keep accepting mediocrity and hope the team will improve with Dorrell as head coach while we continue to pay premium price for our season tickets? A new direction is clearly warranted.

Dolphin Deb @ 10:17 pm:

Um, do you think maybe Ben Howland can coach football too?? Probably just wishful thinking on my part.

Bailey @ 12:12 am:

You guys don’t have little to no class. Do you REALLY think Guerrero is going to make a decision based upon some newspaper clipping. His decision is completely independent from your pet project.

All you are doing is insulting a UCLA Football Alumni in Karl Dorrell. I’m not saying you all don’t have a right to your opinion and you are entitled to express it however you’d like…just do it like you would want someone talking to you or your family members…with class.

And do you guys realize that being hit up for donations to the UCLA Anderson Business School or any other dept other than Athletics has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the choices that the Athletic Dept/Guerrero makes. Why don’t Football Season Ticket Holders choose who the new Dean is of the Law School? BECAUSE THEY AREN’T RELATED!!!

UCLA Alum who is embarassed of the dumpdorrell website.

Yoyo @ 3:16 am:

Great work DD. You guys have done a fine job over the last 2 years. Let’s hope this is the final straw.

Javier @ 7:26 am:

Here is an article by Jamie Newberg of Scout.com on www.foxsports.com. A question was asked about KD. Here’s the question. “Should the Bruins keep or fire Karl Dorrell? If they fire him, who would replace him?”

“In five seasons at UCLA, Dorrell is 34-26. Sure, they beat the No. 2-ranked Trojans last year to shock the college football world. It was a supposedly statement game for the other team in Los Angeles. Since then the Bruins have lost to Notre Dame and got whipped by Utah. They are currently on a three-game losing streak with defeats to Washington State, Arizona and Arizona State. UCLA still has to play No. 2 Oregon and they finish out the season against a USC team that will seek redemption.”

“It looks like (KD) will get his walking papers after the Southern Cal game. Even if the Bruins somehow beat Oregon and USC it may just be a little too late for Dorrell.”

“While I can’t say it’s right for UCLA to fire him, this is still a program searching for an identity. After five seasons and five recruiting classes, depth shouldn’t be a problem for the Bruins. Certainly injuries like they have sustained this season would have taken its toll on just about anyone, but you can’t deny the losses. As someone said to me recently, their big wins have been overshadowed by some bad losses.”

Here is his answer about a replacement.

“I think you will hear a lot about Mike Leach (Texas Tech) and Chris Peterson (Boise State). A few that may have a chance are Norm Chow (Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator), Rich Brooks (Kentucky) and Steve Mariucci. Watch out for Leach with this job. He has done a fantastic job in Lubbock with the Red Raiders. Leach is also from California and did get a law degree from Pepperdine. He also happens to be one of the brightest offensive minds in the game. In eight seasons at Texas Tech he is 62-37.”

“UCLA would prefer a proven head coach but could possibly go for a proven coordinator like Chow. There is talk that some prominent money people from UCLA would love to make a run at Mariucci. Brooks has some obvious Pac-10 ties from the many years he spent at Oregon. He also served as an assistant coach under Dick Verneil while he was at UCLA. But I have to believe Leach has a great shot at this one and it could be a nice pairing with Leach and Walker or another quality defensive coordinator. His scheme would seem to fit in quite well in the Pac-10.”

“The domino effect with this job could impact recruiting. The Bruins have been sitting on a top-three class since the summer. Most of their commitments are from a 50-mile radius of campus. A big reason why is defensive coordinator Dewayne Walker. If Dorrell is fired and Walker is not retained, things could quickly implode in terms of recruiting. They will likely lose a handful of kids, potentially to Arizona State and Oregon, if Walker were to leave.”

“The bottom line is this, UCLA has to make the decision it feels is best for its program. The conference is getting tougher. It’s no longer USC and nine other teams. Oregon, Oregon State and ASU are ascending while teams like UCLA and Arizona continue to underachieve.”

I hope you enjoy the article.

Jim @ 8:40 am:

Bailey, I mean Karl. We appreciate you taking time out of your hectic strategy session from next weeks game to visit the website but really Karl, you should get back to actually developing growth and skills of your team and stop surfing the internet. And by the way Karl, I do have the right to be treated with class even when I disagree with you and your Administration…just as you have the right to put a better product on the field to shut me up and make me the silent minority. Run along now Karl, I hear Dewayne yelling for you, the film from the Notre Dame game is ready.

DumpDorrell @ 11:52 am:

Bailey … Nice try Trojan! Here is what you wrote not 2 weeks ago about the ad (from the same IP address):

“The LA Times is the correct place for an ad because it will reach such a broad audience. Any UCLA student who reads the DB knows about the discontent for KD and has probably already seen this website through Bruinsnation.com. LA Times should be given preference.

On a side note, I have spoken with KD on a handful of occasions and he is really a very nice and genuine guy. Just because we would like a new coach doesn’t mean that he and his family shouldn’t be given our respect. Despite UCLA’s shortcomings this season on the FB field, he is extremely classy and is a UCLA Alum. He should always be given our respect.”

Nice. You wanted us to put the ad in the LA Times and now you are embarrassed (2 r’s by the way). Go back to Figueroa Tech!!

John F @ 5:16 pm:

Looks like Lloyd Carr is going to retire, which will give UM the early jump on the hot coaching prospects. All the more reason to dump KD now!

Diego @ 6:39 pm:

Bailey- If you are a Trojan, then like DD said, Nice Try. IF you’re a UCLA alum that’s allegedly embarrassed by us, then this should be your last post. It does make a difference what we do here. Public opinion is what we’re after with this website. Showing the public the truth about the program will ultimately hit the UCLA athletic deparment in many ways. Bad publicity hurts recruits, hurts sales, hurts legitimacy, hurts tickets sales, merchandise sales, donations (mine have vanished).

William- I’ve been hit up a bit more so than before. I wrote back telling them that I wondered if they were increasing their efforts, because everyone else was dropping their donations. I received no response.

WHP '68 @ 9:20 pm:

Bailey -

“..You guys don’t have little to no class.”

With respect, you should really get a refresher on your “Subject A” (English) course. We here don’t know nuthin about what you’re trying to say. Ask the teacher for a brush up on double negatives and sentence structure.

Syntactically, if we don’t have little class or we don’t have no class, then, we must have some class, right?

“And do you guys realize that being hit up for donations to the UCLA Anderson Business School or any other dept other than Athletics has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the choices that the Athletic Dept/Guerrero makes.”

..On the contrary, to some degree, universities engage in athletics (particularly football) precisely because it is a focal point and a source of pride for their alumni. While seemingly not connected, I am willing to bet that those Anderson solicitations meet with more approval in former bruin households after a successful season than after an unsuccessful one.

P.S. - Diego, you may not have gotten a response, but you got your message to them.

P.P.S. - good detective work, DD!

Chris @ 9:42 pm:

Hey Bruin Fans,

The Save Dorrell bandwagon is getting a little bit stronger. Kurth Streeter has written a cute little article on Latimes.com about how Dorrell needs to stay and towards the end, he plays the race card. Oh yeah, and he started a blog, dontdumpdorrell.blogspot.com. I have already emailed Kurt, and I encourage others to read his article and then fill his inbox with emails. Kurt.Streeter@latimes.com.

DumpDorrell staff, you are doing good work here!! Keep it up!!

John Morris @ 8:56 am:

Dear fellow Bruins:
The season has been embarrassing. Every team suffers injuries. KD has had the players especially on defense. Kd’s West Coast offense is a joke. It is much too complicated to run at the college level. It invites too many mistakes. If he has to substitute players from the depth chart, the in-experience deepens. Every smart analyst has made this point.

DG needs to save the reputation of the program and retain the respect of the alumni. The team’s 5 year record as posted on the DD web site is pathetic. Recruiting top coaches is the AD’s job. Let’s hope DG comes to his senses and undertands his responsibility to the program, the students and the alumni. My alumni donations are going to my high school.

Bruin Clay @ 12:35 pm:

Come on Jim… yes KD is terrible and needs to go, but how can you want DG to go. He did get Howland… and 100 National Champs! He may have f****D up with the FBall coach… but come one… HOWLAND!
GO BRUINS!

As a donor to the ad, I must say GREAT JOB!!! I only wish someone would send me a copy so I can post it next to my Troy Aikman UCLA jersey on my wall of fame.
