Big Joe McDonnell: Strong Movement To Save Dorrell
There are a couple of media notes of import today. The first: Jim Rome, as DD reader Jeff noted yesterday in the comments section, ranted about what a horrible mess our football program is and that Dorrell should go. This Rome radio rant was reported on other sites by other posters as well. Rome went on to slam Breazell for throwing his teammate under the bus and for our embarrassing losses to Notre Dame and Utah. We have not heard the audio, and Rome charges people to listen to it, but since the reporting on it is wide and consistent we have to believe it's true. And so, Karl Dorrell continues to hurt our program and university nationally.
Contrast that bit of sad but unsurprising news with our second media note: Big Joe McDonnell on AM 570 last night had a long segment in which he noted that there was a "strong movement" to save Karl Dorrell. We did not catch who he said was responsible or how this movement was manifesting itself, but we have already pointed out how the beat press is campaigning for Karl. So Big Joe asked callers to weigh in on the subject, but not before he rained down a long list of Dorrell's failures to get the battle started. There were callers in support of Dorrell, though not nearly as many as those who wanted him gone.
What's important to realize folks is that this movement to save Karl Dorrell is REAL. Given Oregon's loss yesterday due largely to the injury to Dixon, the movement to save Dorrell just got a boost. The injury excuse just got a boost. And our chances of beating Oregon just got a boost. We have our work cut out for us. This weekend we will be coming up with a strategy to keep our movement momentum going. Nationally, we are winning the battle, locally there are challenges. Be sure and come back Sunday evening to find out what we are doing to keep the momentum going and what you can do to help.
Our first 1/2 page ad goes in the Daily Bruin on Monday … we will start our campaign then!

I was the one on the radio show last night! battled a pro-dorrell caller and kicked his ass! his points were horrible and I demolished him! I think honestly though! I think that a bunch of callers were USC fans, and ofcourse!,they want dorrell to stay. honestly though,i don’t think dorrell will be coming back next year! plus the ur putting out in the daily bruin,is shure to get radio attention and guerrero’s attention! there’s no escaping it! on another note! we need as many D.D. callers as possible, getting on the radio and voicing their opinion! its not that hard to get on the cannon’s or the joel mc’donald experience! c’mon fellow Beuind I need ur help! we need u to sound off!

The Ducks losing Dixon will not save Dorrell. Oregon’s program is head and shoulders better than UCLA’s program, and it should not be that way. Oregon will be prepared for UCLA, it will be much closer without Dixon, but Oregon will find a way to win.

Today’s LAT missed an obvious point in its story about verbally committed Bruins recruits having backup plans if Dorrell & Co. isn’t back. Are these kids having second thoughts because of the uncertainty surrounding the coaching staff or because they — and their parents — realize UCLA is nothing but mediocre under KD’s so-called leadership? These are all-star kids; it’s not like they don’t have options and pressures from programs that are on the ascendency.
One encouraging thing is that several of the kids quoted talked about the education, and how a UCLA degree means something. Chris Foster did have that angle covered, and it’s an important edge.
