Does Dorrell Know He’s Back For Another Year??

… this is not over.  Brian Dohn apparently continues to think this is not over.  And Karl Dorrell … he met with all the '08 recruits on Monday and, according to Dohn, the meeting went well and the recruits remain committed:

This is a bit dated, but because of blog issues, I didn't get a chance to post it until now. Many of the committed players were on campus Monday to meet with coach Karl Dorrell and the coaching staff. From what I understand, Dorrell was tremendous during the meeting, and all the recruits remain on board. That said, the feelings of the recruits could change if there are any changes with the coaching staff.

We will work on something action oriented next week once the first ad is placed in the Daily Bruin.  We have people submitting many ideas on this, but it won't be anything you probably couldn't imagine yourself.  We will let you know how to help out then.  In the meantime, give us your thoughts and ideas on the updated draft ad copy

We should look no further than our own experience at UCLA to find solutions. Our successes at UCLA in the 2 major college sports, football and basketball, show us that hiring inexperience most often fails us (Barnes, Farmer, Hazzard, Lavin and Dorrell).

Steve Lavin was not a failure. He only had one bad season. Other than his last season, he won 20 games every year and went to Sweet 16 (or Elite 8) every year except 1999.
He was going to be more successful than Jim Harrick. But Dan’s agend for his 1st year as AD of UCLA was to fire Bob Toledo and Steve Lavin. Steve Lavin did not have the similar support Karl Dorrell had from his athletic director.

incredible!! Dohn has resorted to threating people with the recruits. What does KD need to do, lose all of this games, for Dohn to see how mediocre KD is? Unfortunately, the print media is all siding with Dohn. I’ve always felt the media in this city is pro-USC. Most of these newspapers are USC leaning, so I guess there could be conspiracy thoerists citing USC motivations behind the media’s love affair with KD’s mediocrity. I don’t understand how these people believe that 7-6, 6-6 seasons are okaky.

cliq … the first ad comes out Monday, and the next 4 ads will be spaced out.

It’s not just Dohn who is writing this stuff. Scout.com has the interview of UCLA recruits who say that they are still committed to UCLA as long as there aren’t any coaching changes or to many changes. Keep in mind that a lot of these recruits have loyalty to their position coach. Players are keeping their options open just in case their are extreme coaching changes. Keep that in mind.

Diego @ 10:38 am:

We cannot allow 17 year old high school seniors to dictate what we’re going to do with our program. If they decide to leave UCLA, it’s part of the collateral damage suffered from the firing. All firings have the consequence of losing recruits; that is not something that concerns me. To keep KD based on a recruiting class that’s merely rumored to be excellent is a practice in idiocy. We’re already guilty of this in 2004, when KD was given an extension as a way of cementing Ben Olson’s transfer to UCLA.

Besides, let’s suppose this class does ultimately become the top recruiting class in the nation; KD will need three more years to have that class realize the full realm of its potential. Do any of you truly believe KD is capable of developing this talent? I think it’s a moot point anyway, because the only reason that class is rumored to be a top class is because it’s early in the recruiting period. The big name schools make their final pushes at the end, not now.

Javier @ 11:10 am:

I agree with what you said Diego. What I was trying to explain is that it’s not only Dohn who was writing this. I know that this class is not expected to do much until 2-3 years from now. I honestly do feel for KD. I know that he has been giving enough time to make some noise with his teams. I think he could eventually be a good head coach. But he needed experience. Plus he can also evaluate and determine if this offense is the right offense to keep having players in college run. All being said; it seems that the time has come to make a change. With a young team and some experience it might be best to get a new coach. I don’t know what DG will do.

How the heck can college football increase the number of games in a season, keep the same bowl eligibility requirements (six wins), and the Pac-10 still not manage to produce enough teams to fill its bowls?

Two words, my friend: Karl Dorrell.

Diego @ 12:36 pm:

Javier- I know you were trying to communicate that. I simply wanted to write that statement to address the recruits argument that I’m sure many media members will use.

stevek @ 6:08 pm:

Read what the ASU players say about their coach.

“It’s amazing, absolutely amazing,” he said. “The atmosphere, the team, how we all feel about each other, coach (Dennis) Erickson, what he’s brought to the Arizona State Sun Devils. We’re ready to win. We expect to win.”

Forget about Erickson …. our players need a coach they can respect like that and that leads them to EXPECT success!
