Fate Taking Hold … 22 Days Left
We said yesterday that there is 21 days left in the Karl Dorrell era. The end should actually come 22 days from today, when on Monday, December 3, we expect to hear Dan Guerrero call a press conference to announce the long-awaited firing of Karl Dorrell. It would be shocking for it not to happen, and we would certainly have a response, but for now we expect it to happen. Nevertheless, our job is no where near finished. We have to make it so that there is no doubt in nearly every Bruin's mind that this is a fait accompli. The ads will go ahead.
Fate is taking hold however. Bill Plaschke, LAT:
This won't end well for Dorrell. The end seems near for the journey that has been Karl Dorrell's five-year UCLA coaching career. The end, we now know, will be sad. The end will be filled with fight, but an alley kind of fight, wild swings and pointed fingers and sucker punches … The end will be about devastated players making desperate plays in hopes of piercing the chill that has settled upon this UCLA football program like a shroud … The end of the journey that has been Karl Dorrell's five-year UCLA coaching career seems as certain as the pain in some of the final steps taken in Saturday's 24-20 loss to Arizona State at the Rose Bowl.
Sounds like a funeral. That's about as bad as it's been these past 5 torturous years. Even LB Christian Taylor is resigned to the inevitable (from Plaschke):
"Football is a business, it's not the YMCA," (Taylor) said, shrugging. "If we don't play well, we sit on the bench. You've got to win." They have not, and so Dorrell will probably pay, and they know it, their fall nearly complete now, two games left against the two best teams in the conference, a season that has mirrored an era. From the Pac-10 lead toward a possible bowl ban. From the excitement of 20 returning seniors to a silence of another losing locker room. From Hollywood to Toledo.
From Hollywood to Toledo, that's some good stuff right there. Christ Foster also sounds the final death knell:
The season's disintegration has left Coach Karl Dorrell's future in serious doubt with two games remaining — against third-ranked Oregon and 12th-ranked USC. It has been a long fall from those heady preseason days when the Bruins, loaded with returning starters and seniors, talked about winning the conference and possibly even getting to the national title game. Instead, they will now try to scratch out one more victory just to become bowl eligible.
Foster also points out that the team cut their bracelets after last weeks loss against Wazzu … funny that. The headline for our Wazzu postgame post was: "Cut The Bracelets?" Looks like the players read DD! Foster:
The bracelets came off a week ago, UCLA players no longer wearing the reminder that had been with them since Day One. Pac-10 champions. Finish.
But there is one clown out there that continues to defend Karl Dorrell, Bob Keisser - now apparently with the Daily News. Moreso to go on the attack after he had his ass handed to him last week when he race-baited in an ugly, indefensible column on saving Karl Dorrell, Keisser today calls us all out:
Kicking UCLA football around like, well, a football, has become its own sport in Southern California. But on this particular Saturday, to do so would be a crime along the lines of giving Michael Vick a litter of puppies.
Crime?? Cmon now Bob … had your feelings hurt?? We are getting the impression that those "journalists" over at Daily News are emotional stepchildren looking for scraps of respect in the dustbin. Get a grip guys. Keisser and Dohn have been outed as capricious ninnies who cling to whatever positions the winds drag in as if their jobs depended on it. Whatever. The writing is on the wall, just not at the Daily News. More later …

Why is evryone in the LA media so sad about this? He hasn’t exactly always been warm and fuzzy, like when he ditched the Loose Cannons show the week after the Notre Dame game, which he was under contract to make an appearance.
I wrote earlier this week about getting out of the box, so here goes a thought that has been thrown around the net. North Dakota State head coach Craig Bohl. NDSU is #1 in 1-AA after just two seasons at that level. They have beaten Central Michigan and Minnesota this year, and he damn near almost beat Minnesota last year when a “candidate” for the opening, Glen Mason, was coahing UM. I also like Bobby Hauk from Montana, Mike Leach, Don Brown at UMass, Randy Edsell at UConn, Jim Leavitt at USF, Brian Kelly at Cincinnati, Chip Kelly (OC at Oregon), Tim Murphy at Harvard, Paul Johnson at Navy, Larry Blakeney at Troy, Mark Farley at Northern Iowa, Ron Caragher at San Diego, or even Troy Calhoun at Air Force.
Let’s get outside of the Bruin box and get imaginitive with a new hire. We can’t do any worse than we have if we take an exciting chance this time around.

Just a list of those teams that have better records right now:Clemson, Wake Forest, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Kansas, Texas Tech, UConn, Cincinnati, South Florida, Rutgers, Illinois, Purdue, Central Florida, East Carolina, Tulsa, Houston, Navy, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, BYU, Air Force, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona State, Oregon, Oregon State, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Troy, Florida Atlantic, Hawaii, Boise State, Fresno State, and Nevada. Those are just the obvious joke programs from the past that have overtaken UCLA this year and during the last five at large. Let those names sink in and then see if you come to the realization that this is indeed that bad.
ted @ 1:12 pm:
Norm Chow for New Coach
UCLA needs a good offensive oriented coach.
WHP '68 @ 3:20 pm:
On the subject of apologist for Dorrell, you might want to check out Mark Whicker of the Orange County Register. In his Sunday column entitled, “UCLA has lost players but not its will to win”, he becomes a sob sister supporter of the “injury theory” for preserving Dorrell:
“..You can sift through the numbers and the reasons and find your reasons for Dorrell to go.
“On Saturday you could also watch Dorrell’s football team dive into its own helmets to keep a football and a season alive, and, if you were so inclined, you could reconsider.”
Puke!
I reconsidered my position after Utah, Notre Dame, Washington State, etc. and decided that Dorrell should go on December 3rd.
..for those interested, the e-mail address is mwhicker@ocregister.com
TommyBruin @ 3:53 pm:
Why not declare Dec. 3 an official holiday in the Bruin Nation - Judgement Day, the Day of Reckoning, the day our sorrows end and our prayers are answered. Make a big deal out of it, let the media know, so that Guerrero will feel forced to do SOMETHING on that day. Hold a all-day celebration on Bruin Walk. Let everybody know that we expect something to be done on Dec. 3 (or sooner), that we’re not sad or sorrowful to see HIS DOOFUSNESS go, we look at it as a day of rejoicing and rebirth.
jeff @ 9:40 pm:
o.k. so the media is just feeling bad for Dorrell, because. honestly! he is a stand-up guy,a good human being. that being said. he was never a good head coach! he knack for talent and not having his players ready to play, and his ability to lose to horrible teams! with a new aer ahed,i have heard that Chow and Spurrier may be interested in Ucla! those two should be our top two candidates period! either of those two and we will be seeing a new Ucla football era and dominance! please lord! Chow or Spurrier! sound off Bruin fans!
George G. @ 10:07 pm:
Matt Slater should be taking back punts! Guy ties the Pac 10 record for most kick offs taken to the house with some guy named Anthony Davis. I think if the son of Jackie can take it back 100 yards, he should be able to take it back 50 yards.
Instead, we have some clowns dropping balls and fair catching at the 5 yard line. Great job KD. Enjoy your next job at San Marino High.
dustin @ 10:22 pm:
Chow is a coordinator at best. In my opinion he like Dorrell can’t handle head coaching. He was never offered head coaching positions when he left USC. I don’t think Spurrier has any interest in UCLA. Besides they won’t pay him the money he commands.
jeff @ 10:25 pm:
dude! ur trippin’ Chow is he best offensive coordinator in college football history! did u by any chance notice what he did at Usc? he would be a hell-of-a head coach! and Spurrier, from what i’ve been reading might be interested as well and Ucla can fork out the money! Read the papers Bub!
Jesse @ 10:31 pm:
This is a lost season. With 2 games left and no momentum, Dan G ought to do what he did 5 years ago. Relieve KD of his duties and begin the coaching search now so we do not lose any recruits. I like the fact that Chow or Spurrier may be interested in the job, but what to you think of Peterson of Boise State? Let’s get a first class coach in here that can recruit and win. That understands what it takes to do this at the college level and maybe Dorrell can have that job at San Diego State afterall.
Diego @ 11:41 pm:
Jeff- I like Norm Chow a great deal, and his genius is unquestioned. You must know, however, that Chow isn’t a new name or a new coordinator. He’s not the next, hot, young OC. He’s been an O.C. for nearly 30 years. There’s reason, despite his genius both at BYU and USC, that he hasn’t been a head coach. The best reason is the fact that he has publicly stated that he isn’t interested in a head coaching position. His O.C. abilities are grand, no doubt, but by HIS OWN WORDS he has said that he likes to drown himself in the offense only, and really has no inclination for other things.
When someone says something like that, why would you want to offer him your HC position?
Also, I’ve heard the argument that Chow wants to come to UCLA to challenge Pete Carroll and SUC and stick it to them. Well, frankly, I don’t want someone using my school’s football program to play lil’ child games. I don’t live and die by what’s going on over at SUC, and I don’t want someone coming here to play out his personal soap opera that took place at SUC. I want someone that’s coming here for the purpose of putting UCLA in the position that it can be. PERIOD! For nothing else!
Diego @ 11:43 pm:
yup! whicker wrote that garbage today. I sent him an email asking him where this article was the Sunday after we played Utah… Because you see, Whicker, we FOOOKEN QUIT!!!!!!!!!!!! quit!!! against UTAH! So don’t tell me that the players are playing hard, you sap! This is all without mentioning that we were at full strength against Utah.
Diego @ 11:47 pm:
George- I agree about Slater. Moreover, I believe Slater should be used on the offensive side of the ball in some capacity. He’s a back up Safety, but with the shortgage of WRs we have due to injuries (everett, ketchum, et. al), he can be used for reverses or bubble screens to hopefully break something.

UCLAownsU @ 12:00 am:
Getting Imaginative withing a new hire is what got us into this mess. Why would you want to do this all over again?
Aaron @ 12:20 am:
George, i agree with you!! and one question, why did you pick san marino high as your example? jus wondering cus i live around there hahaha
TommyBruin @ 7:19 am:
DOOFUS would be lucky to get a job as a Pop Warner coach after this. And the idea of DOOFUS as a commentator or analyst on TV is hilarious. Can you imagine his commentary: “Yes Dan, they’re down 37 points, but they’re playing hard and the coaches are coaching hard, and wow, Tedford has a really big playsheet, how does he get it in his pants?”
bruinz @ 7:40 am:
Bring on the Old Ball Coach. That would be a nice contrast to the big-name coaches flocking the Pac-10 and our big name programs.
mikey @ 8:47 am:
Couple a’ points. First… Pretty astute observations from Diego. I’ve been an OC and NEVER wanted to be a HC. I don’t think Chow has the inclination to go away from what he loves best.
Second..kinda’ referencing what Tommy Bruin said about Doofus being an on air commentator, Did anyone have the opportunity to see the CAL/USC game on ABC? Another of our past UCLA coaching failures, Steve “the loser” Lavin going on for twenty minutes, literally “interrupting” the football broadcast to give us his b’ball insight. What a joke! And that’s exactly what you’ll get when doofus is gone. A loser telling the world how smart he is.
Stu @ 9:04 am:
Aw, c’mon Diego…ever heard “My two favortie teams are UCLA, and whoever’s playing $uC?” Doesn’t the same go for coaches? (Like Norm Chow) lol!
Stu @ 9:06 am:
Hey Tommy…speaking of TV commentating, did anyone catch the $uC-Cal game? They had STEVE LAVIN of all people as a guest in the booth. Apparently he’s got a contract to be a college b-ball commentator now. HI-larious!!
Jim @ 9:12 am:
I’m torn. If we beat s.c. KD may be back. I have never rooted for so cal but that could happen. What a dilemma. DG could have resolved all this by not hiring him in the first place or axing him 2 years ago.
mikey @ 9:21 am:
Jim, Here’s another dilema for ya’. What if DG hires Another doofus. I’m not seeing JUST getting rid of duh-rell as the answer.
Jeff Westra @ 9:27 am:
I still think Rick Neuheisel is the man for the job. Why are people scared of him. He has been successful in college and NFL. He has the personality to compete head to head with Pete Carroll for recruits. He can complete coherent sentences to the press. He is an alum who wants the job! The fact that Donahue didn’t want him makes him even more intriguing to me. I really like Neuheisel.
Diego @ 9:53 am:
Mikey- ABSOLUTELY! what your last post states is right on the mark! This site is called dump dorrell, but the proble is greater than Dorrell. Our attacks are truly at the administration for its track record. We’re attempting to put a real coach in place.
Dana made a fine point by writing that after KD is fired, this site should remain to focus on the hiring of a PROPER COACH!
Javier @ 11:07 am:
I know that this website was created to fire KD but I will never go against UCLA; specially when playing against USC. In regards to making sure that DG hires a head coach with proven expirience and some success as a head coach. If DG decides to hire an assistant or DW we should protest. This website should be “dumpdan”. I know that DG has done good things with the Athletic Department but he needs to make sure he hires someone with head coaching expirience. I also don’t want a coach that they will hire only because he is affordable. UCLA needs to understand that the top football Universities are paying top $ to keep their head coach.
BruinFan @ 11:43 am:
Pressure to fire KD must persist. DG must understand the damage being done to the football program. If not, then HE must be fired also. Someone at UCLA needs to make the decision do we want a football program, or do we want only to be known as a basketball school. If you were a top high school
prospect, would you even consider UCLA? I mentioned a few weeks ago that KD has ruined my saturdays. Talking to my brother-in-law yesterday, he had 4 tickets to the ASU game and went fishing instead. The “fan base” is dwindling. Has anybody noted that when UCLA played the top drawing school in the country(Notre Dame), there were 78,000 people in attendance. The same day, the same city, USC fills the Coliseum with over 90,000 to see last place Stanford!!Hello??
Hello??? Is anybody home in Westwood????
kirk @ 4:42 pm:
I’ve been a proponent of Neuheisal for the job in the past. However, after seeing how pathetic the Ravens offense has been after RN was promoted to their OC this year I have second thoughts. Perhaps he’s not such an offensive genius after all.
Diego @ 7:44 pm:
There are other elements to consider with Rick Neuheisel. The character issues and the attitude are considerable issues.

Doug @ 2:12 pm:
I like the ad! Very to the point. Not too long at all. And not vicious. Important to be level headed. I really liked the examples of the coaches. I had to go look at John Wooden’s record before UCLA. Sure enough, it was incredible! He was proven when he came in.
Anyone else think Norm Chow would be great? Be fun to watch him square off with Carroll.
MME @ 5:11 pm:
Norm Chow is not a head coach, doesn’t want to be a head coach, and most likely would not be a very good head coach. He doesn’t like to be in the spotlight…he doesn’t give great interviews because he shuns the spotlight. He is a brilliant offensive mind and would be a tremendous offensive coordinator here at UCLA, but we need a HEAD COACH with a proven track record. I’m sure he could be a great head coach, but I don’t necessarily think he would want to be one. Let Norm Chow be what he loves to be…a great offensive coordinator.
