We Can Still Win The Pac-10!
This is what you might be hearing the next 2 weeks before we play Oregon at the Rose Bowl. Shocking as it may seem, it still is a possibility that we can win the Pac-10, albeit at a minimum in a tie with ASU and SuC, and possibly Oregon. The tiebreaker to determine who would go the Rose Bowl is still indeterminable. It would take an incredible breakdown by both Oregon and Arizona State to close the season and an unlikely winning streak for Dorrell against 2 top 15 teams in Oregon and SuC for it to become a reality. But when has reality ever stopped Dorrell and his supporters?
We'll break it down for you. ASU has games remaining at SuC and against Arizona. They could realistically lose both games. Oregon would have to lose 2 of their remaining 3 games, with one of the losses coming against us at the Rose Bowl. The other loss would have to come against either Oregon State or at Arizona. It would be hard to imagine Oregon losing to Arizona but not as much Oregon State, even though Oregon plays them at home. Still, we would have to beat Oregon and we just don't see this happening. Add that to an ASU breakdown and the chances are next to nada.
SuC has 2 games remaining, against ASU and us. For us to be in a tie with ASU, SuC would have to beat ASU and lose to us, which would have them ending up tied for the title as well. What's crazy though is that although SuC would lose the tie-breaker to us, and we would lose the tie-breaker to ASU, SuC would win the tiebreaker against ASU, creating a 3 way tie-breaker dilemma. Assuming Oregon lost all 3 final games and is not tied as well, the next tie-breaker would be the 3 teams' records against the 4th placed team which would either be Oregon, Cal, Arizona or Oregon State. Crazy. If Oregon were also tied at 6-3 conference record with ASU, SuC and us, it gets even crazier … and we won't go there because that isn't going to happen.
Anyhow, "there is still a lot to play for." Even though we don't "control our own destiny" anymore, we still can play for a share of the title. Look forward to hearing about that the next 2 weeks. Yippee.

Diego @ 10:38 pm:
If I remember correctly, the tiebreaker has always been the team that has gone the longest without playing in the Rose Bowl. Unfortunately, ASU and Oregon have had longer droughts than UCLA. USC obviously has been all over the rose bowl the last few years, but Oregon has been since 1994 and ASU hasn’t gone since 1997. Our 1999 Trip would supplant our hopes to go to the Rose. In that tiebreaker scenario, Oregon would go. (note I’m using the year the rose bowl game was played, not the season).
Paul Stine @ 11:37 pm:
KD, do the honorable thing right now and resign!
DumpDorrell @ 11:58 pm:
Diego, that is not the rule. That was a very old rule. Here are the tiebreaker rules.

GoBruins @ 12:08 am:
If UCLA wins out, and Oregon, ASU, USC, and UCLA all finish at 6-3, then UCLA will go to the Rose Bowl.
Here are the key games:
11/15: Oregon at Arizona
11/22: USC at ASU
11/24: Oregon at UCLA
12/1: UCLA at USC
Oregon at Oregon State
Arizona at Arizona State
For all four teams to finish at 6-3, here’s what has to happen:
(1) UCLA will have to beat Oregon and USC;
(2) USC will have to beat ASU and lose to UCLA
(3) ASU will have to lose both of its remaining games against USC and Arizona
(4) Oregon has to lose to UCLA and only once more against either Arizona or OSU.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Rose Bowl Tiebreakers are posted here:
http://www.pac-10.org/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/102802aai.html
a. Two-Team Tie.
The winner of the game between the two teams shall be the representative.
b. Multiple-Team Ties.
(1) When three or more teams are tied in Conference play, if one has defeated all others, it shall be the Rose Bowl representative. If that is not the case, a comparison of the tied teams’ records against the other tied teams shall be made and the team having the best record against the other tied teams shall be the Rose Bowl representative. If two or more teams are still tied after this comparison, the appropriate two-team or multiple-team tie-breaking procedures shall be repeated among those teams still under consideration.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
If all four teams are tied at 6-3, the first tiebreaker is their record against each other, which would be:
UCLA: 2-1 (victories over USC and Oregon, loss to ASU)
Oregon: 2-1 (victories over USC and ASU, loss to UCLA)
ASU: 1-2 (victory over UCLA, losses to USC and Oregon)
USC: 1-2 (victory over ASU, losses to UCLA and Oregon)
ASU and USC would be eliminated, and UCLA would win the head to head competition against Oregon.

Troy A. @ 12:52 am:
Saw a few “Dump Dorrell” shirts at the game today. IF KD doesn’t scratched at the end of this season, you can start selling “Dump Guerrero” shirts as well.
Diego @ 12:53 am:
DD- Did you read the very last line of the tie-breakers?
here’s what it says
If a tie remains, the teams most recently earning Rose Bowl or Bowl Championship Series automatic selection shall be eliminated.
Diego @ 12:54 am:
Of course I understand what you’ve written. Basically, it won’t reach that point, or at least it shouldn’t. Although with that many teams in a tie-breaker scenario, it is possible.
Diego @ 12:56 am:
Oregon did have a Fiesta Bowl in 2002, so that would mean ASU would go to the Rose, if all the tie-breakers produce no single team.
DumpDorrell @ 10:16 am:
Diego … good catch.
tobe @ 10:30 am:
I was in my dumpdorrell t-shirt and didn’t get ANY negative responses from UCLA fans, whether i was sitting with my parents in section 20, or in the student section above tunnel 7. While tailgating a lot people walking by clapped and said they liked the shirt and asked where they could get one.
JB GRIFFIN @ 11:13 am:
A change in the direction of the UCLA Football program needs to be made.
Why:
1) Players lack of Discipline on the field
2) Poor Offensive/Defensive Play Calling Strategies game plans
3) No teamwork evident
4) Lack of Direction on both sides of the ball resulting in too many mistakes
5) Lack of Strong Leadership / Control from the coaches / The players are pretty much on their own on the field
LA_Eagle786 @ 12:13 pm:
basically…..there’s no chance of a Rose Bowl
Jim @ 12:19 pm:
Maybe we can make this a different DD. A double dump. KD and DG.
Diego @ 8:58 pm:
I live in Laguna Beach, Orange County, and out here, in the OC Register, Whicker wrote an apologetic article. I emailed Whicker and told him that his article was irresponsible and obtuse.

As a die-hard Bruin fan who has transplanted to AZ - I still made the trip this weekend - dressed in blue amongst a plane of Devel fans - hoping that the team would rise above Karl Dorrell and take matters into their own hands - maybe even changing plays in the huddle to what they thought wouyld work - showing total disregard for Dorrell. I don’t think that happened - because we lost yet again. We need to look ahead to 2008 when we will have lot’s or recruiting opportunities and a new head coach! Yeah baby!
yooklafan @ 4:51 pm:
It makes me sick to my stomach to picture the Pac10 champ with five losses, thats an embarrassment and would just lead to more voter contempt in the future it is best for all, the respect the pac10 deserves and the future national championship hopes of UCLA if this doesnt happen, and I know it won’t, I wouldnt root against it, but I do see UCLA beating Oregon and then getting housed by USC. No way a Pac 10 team will get to play in the championship even though it is by far the best conference.
I was actually laughing at KD this last game so predectable, so pitiful so gosh darn laughable.
Jim @ 6:54 pm:
We can’t just rely on womens sports, soccer, volleyball and
men’basketball to make us the NCAA top winning school. C’mon Dan get us a top notch football coach for a top football program

yooklafan @ 12:37 am:
I think you meant mens volleyball buddy. mens volleyball is the winningest program at UCLA thank Al Skates unfortunately I had to play against them at SDSU but alot my buddies played at UCLA they would be insulted.
Wayne M. Cutler @ 5:02 am:
No matter what happens in the last two games, DG should fire KD. Forget the wins against USC and Cal, remember the losses to Utah, Arizon, WSU and ND. Don’t forget that the first half of last year’s Emerald Bowl, UCLA was kicking FSU’s ass and then came the second half and disaster.
UCLA should not go to any bowl game this year, even if they qualify. If they do get a bowl game, it would probably be against the Sisters of the Poor and UCLA would lose that too. I think that only teams with at least 7 wins go to bowls. Of course, there are so many bowls these days that there might not be enough teams with 7 wins.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that UCLA loses to Oregon and USC to finally convince DG that KD has to go. And yes, I feel that the only way for UCLA to be a BCS contender is to get an experienced head coach who has turned losing programs into winners. Oh yeah, and UCLA has to realize that winning costs and to pay a coach.
Just a few more weeks and hopefully this disastrous season is over.
