More Names Being Talked About To Replace Karl Dorrell
There are more and more discussions out there in the press about replacements for Karl Dorrell, even if our beat press (*cough* Brian Dohn *cough*) chooses to ignore the talk. Tom Deinhart of Sporting News leads his column today with a discussion of a few more candidates that he has heard bandied about. You might remember earlier in the week, Deinhart talked about BYU's Bronco Mendenhall and Boise State's Chis Peterson, and thew in Texas Tech's Mike Leach for fun. Today, Deinhart talks about all the replacements we have been talking about for some time:
No doubt, the UCLA job will be desirable if it opens. I would expect the Bruins to hire a sage coach this go around. How about UCLA alum Rick Neuheisel? Those close to Neuheisel have told me that he is very interested in coaching in college again.
This is just Deinhart musing, he doesn't claim any inside sources of course. It's easy to say Neu is a replacement candidate for obvious reasons, so this is not news. Deinhart does offer a little nugget for those wanting Neu to come to Westwood however:
I also have learned that at least one A.D. has checked out Neuheisel through the NCAA, and all is clear.
That should raise the volume on the Nue chatter. Deinhart offers up another name to the mix … cue the next round of comments:
I have been told that Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow is very interested in a college job — but only one where things are set up for success. UCLA is one of those jobs.
There's one more. It's as if Deinhart was throwing a bone to nearly every Bruin fan out there:
Another source mentioned an interesting name to me recently: Steve Mariucci. He wasn't that interested in coaching Michigan State last year. But the lure of staying on the West Coast and coaching UCLA may catch Mariucci's attention.
So there you have it - nearly every Bruin fan is covered by Deinhart. As for other publications, the Houston Chronicle has an entire article on the future of Big 12 coaches, and starts off with Texas Tech's Mike Leach. Figuring prominently in his potential future, according to the paper, UCLA:
Leach has flirted with other jobs in the past, including an interview for the University of Miami job last offseason, and there is speculation Pirate Mike could be a candidate if Karl Dorrell is fired at UCLA.
Leach, who is from California and went to law school at Pepperdine, is believed to have interest in returning to the West Coast. In 2006, he signed a new five-year contract that reportedly will pay him $10 million if he remains at Tech through 2010.
While our local press is making their last push to save Dorrell, other publications are talking replacements. Nice job people.

Bronco Mendenhall is actually at BYU not Utah.
DumpDorrell @ 11:26 am:
Thanks, corrected.
jeff @ 12:37 pm:
damn! there are some good names out there for shure! the top 3 should be Norm Chow! Rick Neuheisel and Mariucci. only one I would be a little worried about is Neusheisel, he has never been that dominant of a coach. and has left his last two programs in a little bit of dissarray! we gotta start hitting up Chow, very hard. if he’s interested. man! that would be an awesome coach! sound of fellow Bruins!
Steve @ 12:47 pm:
He left them in a bit of disarray, that is funny, try in a huge amount of disarray. If you want your program to get even worse hire Neu, i’d rather keep Dorrell than hire that loser.
Mooch and Chow are great choices, what about Spurrier, i would think he is tired of being a fifth wheel in the SEC.
stevek @ 1:20 pm:
Chow down on Norm !!
Diego @ 1:28 pm:
Mariucci and the Texas Tech coach are picking up steam as the early rumors.
There are going to be some key jobs opening up and some possibly opening up. This domino effect can be considerable. DG BETTER be on top of this.
Nebraska could make a big name coach shift schools.
If Michigan opens its job, Les Miles could move, which would put LSU out there.
Texas A&M is rumored to take Tommy tubberville, so Auburn is going to be shopping for a coach.
stevek @ 1:31 pm:
probably intentionally our A.D. will wait until it is too late and then use the excuse that we hired the best person available. By then, the top talent (and most expensive talent) will be gone - - saving the A.D. lots of cash - -which is what they wanted to do in the first place…like always.
Diego @ 1:42 pm:
A grim opinion, but a possible one.I hope that isn’t the case.
stevek @ 1:54 pm:
Diego, I really want to be proved wrong! I just don’t know that in the end, that money will not be the over riding concern for the A.D.
jeff @ 2:22 pm:
o.k. so if Chow is really interested in coaching college again,he should be a number 1 candidate for Ucla. but also I think Ucla should also consider Steve Spurrier, Mariucci, and Tuberville! Guerrero better not F’ck this up! Ucla fans are tired of mediocrity and having to deal with having sub-par coaching over the last 20 yrs. (excluding Toledo and our 20 game win streak) the talent is here. and if you look at Usc and all the other National Championship teams, they have a head coach who can lead us there! Don’t F’ck this up Guerrero. For your life’s sake!
Fox 71 @ 8:11 pm:
I don’t agree about either Mariucci or Chow. Chow has made it clear that he doesn’t want to be a head coach, and his age is such that if he took the job it would not be for a particularly lengthy stay. Then we would be right back where we are now.
Mariucci is not a particularly good coach in my opinion. I did a little looking. His first (and only) college head coaching gig was at Cal in 1996. He started off 5-0, ended 6-6, with a loss to Navy in the Aloha Bowl.
He then went to the 49-ers, where he started 25-7, and ended 35-36. Then on to Detroit where he was 15-28.
He hasn’t coached anywhere the last two years, and maybe his mediocre record as a head coach explains it. He has coached for 10 years in college and pro, and has a barely better than average record. Counting play-offs (where he’s 3-4), his total record in the NFL is 75-71. In college it’s 6-6. To me, that’s not what we’re looking for in a coach. Frankly, he seems just like the guy we have now.
Diego @ 8:24 pm:
Fox, you have a good point, but it depends how he goes about it.
consider this; Pete Carroll sucked in the pros. Look up Pete’s record in the pros.
Everyone kept telling Carroll that he was cut out for college, because he was so animated and high spirited. That’s how Mariucci is. Mariucci is a player motivator. Watch him how he was in San Francisco. The detroit lions gave him no backing to be successful. Matt Millen is one of the worst GMs out there.
it’s still a crap shoot. I agree with you on Chow, though.
By the way, when Mariucci was at CAL, Cal had NO ONE! They hadn’t won 5 games in years. That feat alone was huge.
jimk @ 9:27 pm:
Maybe can’t spell it right but UCLA should wrap up Neuheisal. He’s a Bruin and absolutely made for success
BuckeyeBruin @ 10:17 pm:
I donated last week but no one e-mailed me about anything, so I’m not sure where you’re getting you have “100% approval” from everyone who donated.
BuckeyeBruin @ 11:04 pm:
Sorry DD- I did get the e-mail and just responded. It went to a different e-mail address than the one listed here–wierd.
whp '68 @ 11:15 pm:
..is BSU’s Steve Peterson out of the hunt? Someone reported on this blog that the word on the bricks was this guy. Frankly, either he or Spurrier would be great and there’s a lot of smack out there that both might be interested.
Peterson has been absolutely fantastic at BSU and has had a consistent trail of success. He is just reaching his prime and UCLA would be a great place for him to make his mark.
Spurrier, a little pricier, is rumored to be annoyed with USC (not U$C, the one on the other coast) bouncing a couple of prospects because they met NCAA requirements but not the school requirements. But indications are he might like Westwood and a crack at the Bruins’ job.
Like others, I hope we don’t blow this opportunity and pick some fill-in flunky to perpetuate the Donahue/Dorrell commitment to mediocrity.
jeff @ 11:55 pm:
o.k.! simply put! if Spurrier is even remotely interested in Ucla,Guerrero better be calling him every F’cking Day! can u imagine Spurrier at Ucla!? with the guys he could recruit here, and with his reputation,we would be a f’ing powerhouse! Chow or Spurrier! that should be the top two candidates! what do my fellow Bruin Fans think!?

jim @ 8:33 am:
Whomever takes over — it needs to be a proven coach — I see names of some coaches who have done well in weaker conferences — UCLA needs a big name guy and the Bruins need a guy that will keep all of the recruits for the incomming class, which is not going to be easy.
If Steve Spurrier came (sounds like a dream) to UCLA, I think you would see Jimmy Claussen leave Notre Dame and transfer to UCLA. He’d have to sit out next year, but, he’d become the instant starter after Olson and Cowan are gone.
John W. Reagan @ 8:36 am:
Spurrier isn’t leaving S. Carolina for UCLA, nice thought though. Norm Chow is not a head coach, do we really want to go down this road again? I like tricky Rick or Mooch, but I think Neusheisel is the man for the job. I think he would be on his best behavior in Westwood, and he will get the kids to come to UCLA. He gets my vote for what it’s worth. I think UCLA needs to look a little higher than the BYU coach (who will never leave BYU) or the Boise State coach, what about Bowden?
Javier @ 8:52 am:
If Spurrier was interested in the UCLA job he should be the #1 candidate. Just like the previous person said though; will UCLA pay the money it takes to hire a great coach to be the best. I honestly don’t think so. Peterson also sound like a great coach to have. I would of love Norm 10 years ago. Just because of his age. As much as I like Neu; he has a lot of baggage that comes with him.
Can someone please tell me where they saw Spurrier was interested. I would like to see that. We need a coach that will help UCLA achieve excellency. Hiring any of the coaches that we have mention (Spurrier, Peterson, Chow or Neuheisel) would attract other top notch recruits and will help keep the recruits that are committed to UCLA. We need the newspaper and radio stations to start mentioning the names of these coaches. I am asking everyone to pitch in and start contacting your local radio station and newspaper. Contact National sports radio and newspaper. Help plant the seed about I like Neu; he has a lot of baggage that comes with him.

P.S. Hey DD, I am not asking you to choose a coach. Just in case you were thinking I was asking you to choose a coach. LETS GO BRUIN FANS!!! LETS MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!
Scott Bilo @ 10:41 am:
What in the world has Neuheisel ever shown any of you to make you think that he would be the guy to lead us out of mediocrity? He was nothing but mediocre at Colorado and Washington, and Karl Dullrell was on his staff at both schools!!! He is also a Lou Holtz clone in that he never ever leaves a school without a trainwreck being in his wake, a trainwreck complete with orphans, puppies, and incinerated pony remains, in other words, exceptionally ugly.
Spurrier would never come to UCLA. End of story.
The original list consisting of Mike Leach, Chris Peterson, and Bronco Mendenhall are the right road to travel. Throw in Montana’s Bobby Hauk, and you have a hell of a list.
Let’s go people!!! Let’s get outside of the box and show some freaking imagination!!! Being inside of the box is what’s gotten us into the situation in the first place!
Jim H @ 6:13 pm:
These are the coaches you suggest? These are an improvement? These guys die when they lose? Try again - more mediocrity. Take a look at Jim Grob at Wake Forest, Greg Schiano at Rutgers and Jim Leavett at So. Florida. All have had winners on the National stage and all have been consistently ranked in the Top 10 multiple times. Go big or don’t go at all. Let’s not get a guy we “think” might improve the porgram. Get someone who has been there before and can handle the pressure.
Jim H @ 6:21 pm:
Let me set you Spurrier fans at ease. Being an East Coast guy, you need to know he has a daughter at So. Carolina now and has membership to three golf clubs in the SouthEast. Outide of coaching, he does nothing but play golf. He aint goin West no matter what you think or hear. Also, the UCLA payroll restrictions because it’s a state job, would not even get him to return a phone call from Guerrero
Big Al @ 10:49 pm:
I’m trying to give my tickets for the oregon game away and no one wants them. If KD is still the coach next year I’m gone. I would rather see CLU football then UCLA. Please fire KD our progam is so bad that my blind friend does not want to go to a game.
Bluebird @ 11:15 pm:
I’ll take the Oregon tickets. Let me know if they’re still available.

bruinbob77 @ 10:47 am:
Lets add June Jones to the list of potential replacements. Kids love the “run and shoot” and it is entertaining to watch. Jones has consistantly won at Hawaii with the tv time zone limitation. Google him for consideration. We should take a hard look and not rush to judgment.
Kevin @ 5:53 pm:
Spurriers a long shot because he always coaches SEC teams. Mariucci & Mendhall are both mediocre coaches. Chris Peterson is a prototypical college football with trick plays and developing players. Norm Chow is a great quarterback coach with his record of : Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Ty Detmer, Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Vince Young. I’m not the biggest Mike Leach fan because #1 you never hear about Texas Tech players in the pro’s and #2 his high-profile offense always sputters….anyone remember Tim Couch? Last, Rick Neuheisel is the WORST candidate. Have you seen the offense of the Baltimore Ravens…there is no offense. Just because hes an NFL coach doesn’t mean he knows jack s**t. Just look at Mike Nolan of the 49ers. If you ask me you’d have to aim for Peterson or Chow….no excuses Guerrero. I would recruit a coach that uses an offensive system according to our recruits especially at the QB level. NO WCO (west coast offense)! It can be done….just not with a big arm QB like BO.
Restless Bruin Fan @ 6:46 pm:
Mariucci is definitely the golden nugget of all of the potential replacements. But there is also another coach who once held a position in the 49ers organization (much like Carroll and Erickson) interested in coming to the college game…Jim Mora Jr. Remember, how he wanted to take the UW job? Without question, DG needs to go big on this hire and fetch some talent with serious NFL experience.
