Terry Donahue To The Rescue … Again
We just can't get rid of Terry Donahue, and he can't seem to stop from trying to mess things up. Now 12 years removed from driving our football program into its present state, now that he has no clout with Dan Guerrero, and fewer stooges in Morgan Center than before, Donahue is still trying to impose his views on our football program from afar. If the pompous buffoon Don Morrison is exhibit A in the trials we are facing now, Donahue is exhibit B (not in order of significance). Brian Dohn of the Daily News, writes up yet another article on the disaster that is this football season in yet another attempt to remove the pressure on Dorrell. And who does Dohn quote …. the guy who wouldn't just shut up and leave, Terry Donahue:
"I think (the injuries) have had a huge affect on the team's ability to function, and to win," former UCLA coach Terry Donahue said. "You cannot absorb the injuries that UCLA has had to absorb and expect to maintain your team's consistency, or your team's ability level. No team is that deep."
It is obvious that there is a fully organized assault on the public right now to protect Dorrell from his record so that he survives this season. We will say it again, Dorrell's firing is by no means a lock. We most definitely HAVE TO put those ads out there. As for Typhoid Terry, what a joke. A mediocre coach for most of his career is excusing the mediocrity of Dorrell with the bogus excuse of injuries. We suggested early in the season this might be the case. But what Donahue doesn't address is the debacle in Utah, and the horrible showings against Stanford and BYU where we made average and young teams look like BCS contenders with Heisman QBs at the helm. In other words, we were playing horrible BEFORE the injuries, as we pointed out after every game! Wayne Cook:
"Even before the injuries, they still weren't clicking," said Cook, who is the sideline reporter for UCLA's radio broadcasts. "The offense still hadn't found a rhythm. Then, it gets hard to get into one when you start having all the injuries."
Exactly. The Dorrell cult is trying to get him another year based on the injury excuse. That is where the battle lines have been set. Every year there is an excuse for Dorrell, next year it will be "we lost 17 starters and 25 seniors." It will be another torturous year of Dorrell giving his "growing" and "learning" excuses. And what will happen after another .500 season (his 5th in 6 years!), the Dorrell cult will say "it was a rebuilding year, give him one more year …. next year is THE year." Can you imagine?? A 7th year for Dorrell??!!! We need to keep the pressure on folks, because what we have described is a VERY real scenario.

Steve @ 10:58 am:
TD is the jerk who was fired from the 49ers for costing them millions in stupid player chioces. He NEVER had a national champ team at UCLA, or even close. Toledo and KD are his prodegies. He has done enough damage already. Get a life somewhere. Who the fk cares what he thinks? We need a Peterson, or a proven winner form a smaller school like BYU. TD slipped in when Vermeil left to the NFL and no one was available. Lucky break. Took years to jell and then not great.
Terr, get lost.
jeff @ 11:50 am:
terry dipsh’t! go f@ck off! he was soo conservative it cost us national championships and games! f’ck off b’tchboy terry. and horrible coaching lost us games against pathetic,sh’tty, horrible, teams. usc has had a bunch of injuries and look at them still. I wish Norm Chow would read the L.A.Times today and read where Pete Carroll says that “they miss Lane Kiffin the most”. and take the job at Ucla to show Carroll what he missed! Sound off Bruin fans!
mikey @ 12:10 pm:
I keep seeing the same old “injury” excuses in the MSM. Now it’s Terry Donawhore! Dumbass, the injuries are a result of POOR COACHING! (read: no discipline. no conditioning…)Not the other way around! The Bruin’s losses are caused by piss poor execution, lack of strength training, lousy practices, stupid player/personnel/position choices…All causing the injuries and all on the Doofus’ watch. Pac 10 opponents didn’t cause the Owee’s. Duh-rell’s coaching did!
loyd milligan @ 12:34 pm:
Injuries or not, this “excuse” really just skirts the issue. Let me look at this logically. We, as fans, demand a coach that consistently wins and reject a coach that consistently loses. KD consistently loses. Therefore, we reject KD. The reason for a loss does not take away a loss. In other words, KD’s record speaks for itself, no need to look further.
Pedro @ 12:37 pm:
Look, I know some of us are beginning to get rabid over this, but have some sense. The injuries have been unthinkably horrendous, and yes, most teams would have substantial difficulty with this scenario. It just hurts the DD position by insisting otherwise. Focus on the “positive” facts.
This year is no excuse for the body of work in KD’s tenure. The team was still in sound health at Utah (and at similar collapses in previous seasons), and with any decently prepared backup, including MBT, should have salvaged the Notre Dame game (ND doing everything possibe not to win). I know, KD always says we were well prepared, but didn’t execute. Hello! That’s the definition of NOT being well prepared.
The bigger issue for DG to consider is that roughly the same healthy talent produced a mediocre season last year. Does he now want the Bruins to face the loss of 24 seniors next year, so we can then hear the excuses about having a young team? DG gave DD the opportunity to grow on the job, yet it still looks a lot like year one in years four and five. This season is a lost cause in all ways. Focus on the (no) growth of the Dorrell program over five seasons.
Diego @ 12:45 pm:
DD- Donahue, TJ and Dohn are precisely the reason why our ad needs to go from the Daily Bruin to L.A. Times. Every Bruin Fan that reads the Daily Bruin, reads the L.A. times, but not everyone that reads the L.A. times reads the Daily Bruins.
Right now, Donahue, TJ Simmers, et. al are receiving more attention than anyone that has written on the Daily Bruin
This post you’ve made about Donahue is the very reason why we have to attack the L.A. Times.
Stu @ 1:14 pm:
Another reason we’ve been getting injuries (particularly at QB) is the team not willing to play hard for KD…the OL last weekend especially seemed to be like “oh well” and that was letting Zona t-off on the poor kid. I was thinking during the game “DUH-rell’s going to ruin any potential NFL career for Cowan!!” Sure enough, next play, he got a concussion and a collapsed lung!! NICE GOIN KD!!
Curly @ 1:22 pm:
How about the conditioning? Anyone thought he might not be very good?
Louis Miranda @ 2:15 pm:
Terry Donahue, the coach who had Ken Norton Jr., Troy Aikman, Gaston Green, Dennis Price, James Washington, Daryl Henley, Carnell Lake etc. basically a team full all ameicans , first team pac 10 and many more stars who went on to the NfL in the years 1987&88 and this loser couldn’ win a National Championship or even beat Sc those years to qualify for the pac 10 championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl. Not to mention all the other years he had outstanding talent and got the absolute minimum out of them. Who cares what this Bonehead has to say. If Guerrero is that stupid to be swayed by TD then maybe we should be calling for him to be fired as well as Dorrell. Unf#kn believable.
Louis Miranda @ 3:30 pm:
what you said about the player’s not trying hard for Dorrell during practice and workouts Stu is squarely on the shoulders of Karl Dorrell and his staff. The player’s obviously have no respect for the staff, but in their insubordiation it also illustrates the player’s lack of character and pride. Shame on all the player’s who don’t give it their all. If they get a new coach; my sincere hope is that he can motivate the malcontents that will be around for 09. I know a good coach will either get them motivated or throw them off the team, which is what they deserve.
Louis Miranda @ 3:53 pm:
I want the younger fans who don’t remember Terry Donahue’s 20 years as coach 1976-95 to know tha he is the architect “commitment to mediocrity. Tons of talent for 20 years - net result 3 Rose Bowl appearances o National championships. Inherited the talent of our last great coach Dick Vermeil who definetly would have won at least 3 National titles had the cheap administration given him a small raise. Instead they insulted him and he left for the NFL. He wanted to stay here. Anyway donahue inherited this talent and took the team to the Liberty Bowl when he could had them with all their talent, playing for the National Championship. Bottom line he is a loser. I just want all of you to know that his opinion should be meaningless based on his 20 year commitment to mediocrity. Only Dorrell could do less with more talent tha Terry Donahue.
WHP '68 @ 4:22 pm:
“..I know, KD always says we were well prepared, but didn’t execute. Hello! That’s the definition of NOT being well prepared.”
Pedro, that is a salient observation — as is the one about the team’s performance before the injuries. In fact, one of Dorrell’s problems is that he is not organized. Think back to the beginning of the season (or back to Spring football); there was originally one of those hoary quarterback controversies, a contest between Cowan between and Olsen, wasn’t there? Also, when Cowan went down, do you remember how muddy the QB depth chart got? I mean, we had Bethel-Thompson and then a guy who was moved to defense and a another guy who was a red shirt.
But the line of succession, if you will, was not clear…and phooey on those who ascribe his poor season to the loss of both quarterbacks. Didn’t both Cowan and Olsen have physical problems from previous seasons?
Given that, any head coach (like a chief executive or general) would have had contingency plans in place and, at the very least, organized his resources to best deal with the situation. Instead, we were treated to a walk-on who had practiced so little he still had Spring football helmet rash during the Notre Dame game — and a very talented player who came to UCLA as a quarterback but was put on defense. I may have some wires crossed here and a lot of this has been written before, but this is why Dorrell is not a good head coach.
jeff @ 4:28 pm:
Donahue was too conservative and chicken sh’t! he was a p’ussy, and afraid to take chances and go for the win! that’s why we had not national titles and few pac-10 titles! imagine if vermeil came back to coach the bruins again!? that would be f’ing awesome, but highly unlikely. as for the injuries,i blam E.J. kreis ucla’s strenght & conditioning coach. I read that he has a history of his players getting hurt a lot, under his guidance! his fault for all those injuries!
yooklafan @ 5:03 pm:
Whatever Terry, and maybe these excuses could work abit with the PAC10 competition, but come on u can not fekin use those excuses for Utah and Notre Dame, sure that doesnt have to do with a Conference title, but its frigging shamefull and bottom line had everything to do with coaching or lack there of, there is no case to be made with being the only team not to beat a team all season, and getting blown out by another bottom tier team. I guarantee you the loss Michigan suffered in its first game pales in comparison to not one but two, or possibly three if you count WSU, there is no reason to make excuses just walk away… walk away.
Diego @ 5:19 pm:
Another reason we’ve been getting injuries (particularly at QB) is the team not willing to play hard for KD…the OL last weekend especially seemed to be like “
This is a valid point, but I dont believe it’s related to the players not trying, necessarily.
The O-line, a senior laden one, I might add, has played poorly the ENTIRE season. A key reason is the West coast Offense. In the west coast offense, O-lineman have SEVERAL more reads than they do in a regular offense. In addition, the plurality of formations make the O-line tentative. Linemen are either confused about where they’re supposd to be, or they’re concerned about false starting.
We’ve had more procedure penalties than ever, and the catalyst has been this offense. When you factor this issue, you can see why our QBs are in danger. When the Lineman are hesitating due to confusion, then your QB is going to suffer. The next three games are going to be brutal for any QB that can’t run around, because the D-lines and LBs we’re going to facre are going to be very good.
this speaks well for having Osaar back there who will undoubtly run for his life, but let’s hope that our offense’s confusion doesn’t cause him to be hurt, too.
Stu @ 5:56 pm:
Louis…I think you give more credit to the players then they deserve. I assume you’ve seen some of the ultra-conservative play calling, right? If you’re an offensive player, KD is calling you out REAL big and clear that he doesn’t think you have the ability to move the ball at all against some of the worst defenses in the country. That’s got to be SOOO much of a letdown. Imagine your boss telling you to your face that you’re an awful salesman, and he keeps you off the sales floor as much as possible…how motivated would ANYONE be in such a situation?
Louis Miranda @ 6:32 pm:
wWell put Stu.that makes a lot of sense. Yet another reason to fire Dorrell. He has no confidence in himself and as Stu just said, Dorrell has no confidence in his player’s. That equals a total LOSER!
Valencia Bruin @ 11:58 pm:
Jeff,
I agree with the Donahue scheme…kick a field goal to tie and don’t go for the win. Definetely his M.O.
But you gotta back up some stats on the strength and conditioning coach. You sound like a bad fan!
November 9, 2007
Valencia Bruin @ 12:12 am:
Louis,
I read your blogs. Can’t agree more. Dorrell is a product of Donahue. Do you see any resemblence?
John W. Reagan @ 8:04 am:
This is Alice in Wonderland. If the UCLA athletic department keeps Dah-rrell around another year it will take several years for our lowly program to recover. I have been saying this for years. “Coach” Dah-rrell is systematicly destroying UCLA’s football program through his incompetence. Injuries? What college football team doesn’t injuries in November? Oregon is missing three starters on offence alone, yet they are positioning themselves for a run at the BCS. I really think Dah-rrell’s rein at UCLA is over.
CoronaBruin1 @ 12:06 pm:
Dorrell should have known that Osaar Rashan was MORE capable then Bethel-Thompson in that ND game and put him in the game .I think the outcome of that game would have been different. Osaar has had one more year in the program that Bethel-THompson . Instead, Dorrell moves Osaar to receiver earlier in the season. Are they not evaluating player athleticism ?? This shoud be done regardless of age. THe Arizona game displayed Osaar’s abilities . I think Dorrell has weighed Ben Olson’s highschool resume too heavily . Olson telegraphs his passes and is immobile. As we have seen , we need a mobile QB to spark this pathetic west coast offense. Doesn’t Dorrell see that our O-line struggles every week.
THe coaching suck and it starts and ends with Dorrell.
stevek @ 1:28 pm:
Forget about the quality of our QBs for a moment, our QBs are NOT West Coast Offense QBs.
You either recruit to fit the system or change the system to fit the recruits. KD does neither. It’s always a square peg in a round hole.
Norm Chow has a system and knows how to recruit the right QBs and other offense talent to fit his system.
e40wada @ 1:45 pm:
Stevek, you need more than just a qb to be successful. What about lineman?? Defensive & Offensive. Did you hear what WSU coach Doba said about UCLA’s lineman “Big and bulky but cant change direction”. A qb and rb can only be productive if there’s time and space. Same for the Dfense. A cb and lbr’s best friend is an effective pass rush.
We need someone who can recruit the HOG-MOLLIES. Thats why I beleive if KD is replaced it has to be with a big name experienced HC to attract the BIGBOYS. It also has to be someone who can attract the type of 5star players that handle UCLA’s academics. What current top 10 school have the same standards for admission that UCLA has in place????
I beleive none, so who would be the best candidate to handle both, top 10 consistency while not compromising the academics standards???
stevek @ 1:59 pm:
e40wada - you’re 100% correct. I was only pointing out just one problem that persists with Dorrel at just the QB position. The QB position issues are just so visible and garner all the press. The same problem exists with all those you listed, on the BOTH the offense and defense. You’re right. We need the whole thing fixed by someone who can. Just hope to heck that we’ll spend the cash to bring someone in that can do the job.
e40wada @ 2:10 pm:
100% correct Stevek!!! It all boils down to whether the A.D. is willing to pay for the type of coach and coaching staff UCLA FOOTBALL deserves. Considering they paid HOWLAND & staff I don’t understand why not. Look at his accomplishments, if it were football those 2 final fours equate to 2 BCS BOWL payouts. PAY ATTENTION DG, PAY ATTENTION!!!!
stevek @ 2:37 pm:
e40wada - you nailed down the issue well!!! Pay attention DG! Will he?
It all makes economic sense too!! Look what happened with Howland. There’s even talk about refurbishing Pauley that was not really getting the prime time discussion before Howland (and his successful teams) arrived. Why? The on floor success brings in cash in many ways, including TV monies. Something we don’t get near enough of because we are usually not Nationally televised on the football side becasue we aren’t part of the BIG game schedules. Sorry FSN, you’re not ABC or even ESPN. Add in the BCS Bowl payouts and DG could find ways to CONTINUALLY fund the program that he cannot imagine today.
AD Guerrero !! Are you listening ??
Diego @ 2:55 pm:
well, let’s do the game notes in here, since there’s no topic for it.
Who’s going to be at the game tomorrow? I’ll be there, as always.
Tomorrow is going to be a tough one to watch. Those of you that Like Osaar and dont’ believe his inaccuracy is going to hurt us will have to pay attention tomorrow. personally, given that they just faced Dixon, ASU is going to be prepared for a running QB. Very simply, ASU should look to keep Osaar from running and make him pass. I hope that his severe inaccuracy doesn’t hurt us that badly.
I say we stay conservative, play defense and win it that way.
stevek @ 3:45 pm:
Will be there. While Osaar brought some excitement against Oregon, for the reasons you said, you know that ASU will be on the hunt for Osaar from the opening kick-off. Add ASU’s coach’s desire to win that DOES “transfer” to the players where KDs does NOT, and the fact that ASU must win to stay in the PAC-10 championship/Rose Bowl hunt, we’re in deep
$#!+ if they don’t play smart and conservative. Problem is, will there be any running game whatsoever? Should the running game not be in play and Osaar’s lack of accuracy continue, it’ll be a long day.
stevek @ 3:46 pm:
Sorry, meant to say Osaar brought some (emphasis on only some) excitement against Arizona !!
Diego @ 3:59 pm:
What you write is pretty much true, Steve. It will fall on our defense again. Does anyone know when Harwell will return ? Part of the reason our secondary has been ripped is because we haven’t had the pressure we’ve needed on the QB. Davis has had to do the bulk of the work, but there hasn’t been any consistent pressure. Harwell is the second biggest loss we’ve suffered this season, behind QB
BruinsMaul @ 7:36 pm:
e40wada you are a dumb ass muther-eeffer..It is not DG’s fault, its not the players fault, ITS ALL KD’S FAULT! And if you would remove your fatass lips off his blackass you would realize it!!!!
November 10, 2007
Jim @ 9:50 am:
BruinsMaul. You are the dumb ass. If it wasn’t for DG we wouldn’t be having this web site. He hired someone without head coaching experience. Also rembember, he hired Lavin with no h.c experience. I feel sorry for K.D. We should be demanding D.G. be fired.
BruinOC @ 12:09 pm:
College Game Day - During this mornings program on ESPN, Kirk Herbstreet (or however you spell it) stated that UCLA is the most disappointing football team this season. He stated QB injuries aside, the ‘D’ and how the team has been inconsistant this year are the reasons why.
Chris Fowler also reported that he saw a Fire Dorrell hat in the crowd.
Just a FYI
Bruins 27
AZ St. 17
Go Bruins!!!
