Situation Detiorates
There are a number of reports and quotes that show the situation for Karl Dorrell is deteriorating. The mood around the locker room and on the field has definitely been affected. Players and coaches are being asked about Dorrell’s future more prominently than the next game or the next opponent. The MSM and beat press are talking about Dorrell’s status and replacements. Here is a sampling of what’s been going down:
- LB Christian Taylor says speeches don’t work: “At this point, for me, there is nothing to be said. Enough talk. It’s all about, ‘Lets go play ball.’ . . . No one needs a rah-rah speech. It’s doesn’t work. If you’re not ready yourself, you’re not going to be ready.” Dorrell’s inspirational rah rah speeches aren’t working. That right there is a significant breakdown.
- LAT Chris Foster says Dorrell must go 3-0 to keep job: “Their coach’s future is cloudy … Coach Karl Dorrell’s job appears to be on the line, with victories in the last three games — against Arizona State, Oregon and USC — perhaps the only way to earn his way back.” We hope so. It’s not a lock, so we have to keep the pressure on.
- Daily News’ Brian Dohn says Dorrell’s future on the line: “Karl Dorrell’s future at UCLA is a hot topic, but the embattled coach said he has not spoken to his team about it, nor is he focusing on it.”
- Dorrell continually dogged by talk about “status”: “Our players, they want to play. They want to win, regardless of what’s being said, and my status … What’s being said, I really can’t do anything about that.”
- Tom Deinhart of Sporting News talks replacements already: “Two names keep coming up should a coaching change occur at UCLA: Boise State’s Chris Petersen and BYU’s Bronco Mendenhall. And I wouldn’t be shocked if Texas Tech’s Mike Leach becomes a player for the UCLA job if he opts to leave Lubbock on his own accord. But if Mendenhall left BYU for UCLA, would Leach be interested in going to BYU, his alma mater?” Nice!
- Daily Bruin writer Adam de Jung says fire Dorrell: “Barring the most improbable series of events, such as the Bruins winning their last three games and winning the Pac-10, Dorrell will just about certainly be fired as head coach. And he should be … All his answers are cliches, but what more can we ask of a guy who’s probably losing his job soon?” That pretty much sums it all up.

jeff @ 12:49 pm:
so what does everyone here think of Peterson fro. Boise State? he’s already proven himself and looks to be a great fit for Ucla. Steve Hartman yesterday, said Ucla should hire Peterson immediately! sound off fellow Bruins! what do you think!?
Louis Miranda @ 1:07 pm:
I’m all for it Jeff if he doesn’ run that damn west coast offense. Hope fully he also believes in a strong deffense. I don’t know that much about him, only that his teams have played well for 2 years now, which is more than we can say for the last 9 years of zero pac-10 championships.
Louis Miranda @ 1:48 pm:
Diego,Wayne M. Cutler;where have you guys been? We miss your input. I’d like your thoughts on coach Peterson of Boise ST. Do either of you know what kind of offensive and deffensive style he uses. What do you guys think of the possibility of Al Borges returning to run the offense?
jeff @ 1:57 pm:
yeah,i hear ya louis. but I also believe toledo was a hell-of-a coach too! but that’s a discussion for another time. but yeah, Peterson takes chances and is a creative guy (for example, the Oklahoma/Boise State game). Defensively,we need to start recruiting the big defensive tackles, like LSU and Florida does. we can recruit across the nation. Toledo proved that and Pete Carroll has too. but Louis, correct me if I’m wrong!? don’t you think we should be able to average 90,000 fans a game like Michigan,or Oklahoma? we need more passionate fans, and need more fans to make the Rose Bowl the (tuffest place to play in THE NATION!) not the fans who start going to hames when they start winning! Sound off fellow Bruins! What do you think? Do you guys agree?
pinetar @ 2:13 pm:
No guarantees that Peterson era would be a replay of the success he had at Boise St (or even the bowl game vs. Oklahoma as everything went perfectly that night for Boise St.), but Peterson’s preparation, guts and vision provide for that type of success, even against a team everyone thought would be way too much for them to handle.
Pulled from a WAC web site ::
“BSU is known for its wide variety of offensive schemes, often using players deep down the depth chart for various roles. And Petersen, considered one of the top offensive minds in the nation, was the architect.”

stevek @ 2:28 pm:
Jeff, a lot of the worrds have been said about the same thing for just about the quietest stadium in the country. Until the Rose Bowl is REALLY filled every week and not just in the middle of a 20 game win streak and not some lousy fake sell out number at 84,000 and not until the fans get off their butts and yell all game long like those ridculously passionate LSU fans, the Rose Bowl will always be just a “nice” place to play for any team to come in to.
Nice stadium, nice setting, nice weather and a very welcoming and nice UCLA team that will gladly make their stay as nice as possible.
To hell with that any longer! Let’s get a tough as nails coach and team and let’s make the Rose Bowl just as tough and as bad a_ _ an experience to come to as it is to go to LSU’s Tiger Stadium or any other tough venue to play in. Let’s make it THE stadium of the west where everyone knows they’re in for a beating, from both the team AND the fans. Then a Bruin Nation will emerge.
e40wada @ 2:31 pm:
I agree Jeff, UCLA should average 90k a game. But L.A. fans in general are fair weather. Remember, during the HACKETT days of U$uC the Coliseum averaged what? 45k. You win fans will come.
Recruiting 5star D-lineman is another story. UCLA’s entrance standards are some of the toughest in the country. And being an ex D-lineman myself, most of us academically are as dumb as DOGSH*T. So to compete with the LSU’s, Oregons, Oklahomas & U$uC’s, where if you can spell your name right your admitted, UCLA has no chance.
Louis Miranda @ 2:35 pm:
I absouletly agree with you Jeff, but the thing out here in Southern California is that if your team is dull and mediocre be it baseball, basketball or college football; the fans have a number of beautiful and interesting things to do. Their is no interest in being bored for 3 plus hours by a team that is going to finish the season 6-7 or 7-6. Brfore Pete Carroll came to town, attendance at Trojan games was way down. How ironic that their coach at the time Paul Hackett also employed the boring and unsuccesful west coast offense. It didn’ work for Hackett, it didn’ work for the soon to be fired Callahan and it will never work for clueless Dorrell. If we hire a real coach who has the balls to kick player’s off the team who refuse to practice hard, which is happening right now; who also instills confidence and relates to the team that he is positive and want’s them to reach and win the National title game someday real soon and of course recruits the type of player’s that can take UCLA there someday soon, not 10 years from now or never if Dorrell continues to coach; then and only then will you see the Rose Bowl filled to capacity every home game.
stevek @ 2:39 pm:
e40wada, you’re right about the LA fair weather fans. Win and they will come. But if what you say is true, we are in a catch-22 situation. If you are right, recruiting 5-stars at any position will be next to impossible because of our academic standards. How do we compete and win then? Almost any coach, even a miracle worked like Peterson will not be able to take on the big tanks year in and year out.
e40wada @ 2:54 pm:
DD, how about going after the Admin. office about lowering the entrance standards like Wies did at ND. Thats the reason why ND will have the #1 recruiting class in the nation. Also I’m pretty sure that would attract more interesting coaching prospects.
With that being said peterson, mendenhall, whatever…BRING BACK THE PRODICAL SON: RICK NUEHIESEL!
e40wada @ 2:55 pm:
See Louie great minds do think alike…
Louis Miranda @ 3:06 pm:
e40wada. If you are saying Neuheisel would be a great hire, I have to agree with you. You are right he would be an excellent choice except I noticed his teams at his last stop in Washington di not play very good defense and defense is very important if UCLA is going to start winning pac10 championships again and hopefully a National
championship. Last week you said you wanted Neuheisel to keep D.Walker as his DC and hopefully groom him to take over as HC. I just don’t think he is all that great as DC. and the thought of him coaching us into the ground in the future as HC is taking a step back.
jeff @ 3:08 pm:
that is a great thing to shoot for! lowering the standards would be huge! and especially for recruiting. does anyone agree with me here that Dorrell is a horrible recruiter!? I mean I can imagine Pete Carroll going to visit these kids at their houses.i doubt Dullard bothers with that! also wanted everyones opionion here. everyone says our defense hasn’t been as good. of course I have said that how can they be when our offense has been soo putrid and go 3-and out every series in the past, thus wearing our defense out! one thing though! these are not dewaynes guys that he recruited. we gotta note that! but,i don’t think he should be the next head coach either! and have you guys been as disgusted with the ucla passing game and their unwillingness to stretch the field and throw down field! instead of the 5-yard out all the time! great job Gay Norvell! also, why doesn’t Matt Slater start!? another great move by Dullard Dorrellism!
UCLA'02'04 @ 3:19 pm:
Chris Petersen is 21-1 as a head coach. Pretty Impressive. He should be the top candidate UCLA pursues.
Louis Miranda @ 3:36 pm:
Jeff you are right about Dorrell as a recruiter. Only 1 five star player in 5 years as coach. Many of his 4 star players are not even first string! He misuses his talented player’s such as Matt Slater who obviously has talent. Why is Dorrell so unimaginative to not use this playmaker on something other than special teams. I cannot imagine even small thinking Terry Donahue being this stupid! Speaking of play calling, I don’t think i have ever seen a more pathetic uninteresting offense ever!Dorrell is so inept congress should investigate! Just kidding about the last part.
jeff @ 3:46 pm:
its absolutely correct. I’ve never seen an offense that has absolutely no-confidence in their quarterbacks to throw the ball downfield! and they also are so prediactable with the lay-calling as well. we know when they are going to run,as well as when they are going to pass. if we know it,imagine what teams who study hours of film see? and we have guys like Terrance Austin, who are fast as hell, and Gay Norvell somehow can never get them the ball,or uses them. also, why does DT 6′4 320 Lb. Darious Savage not start at defensive tackle!? ARE YOU F’ING KIDDING ME!???????
dana @ 4:21 pm:
e40wada,
No, Weis and ND did not lower its entrance requirements so I have no idea what you’re talking about. Instead, it was Urban Meyer who wanted some athletic exemptions before he agreed to coach at Notre Dame. Meyer had previously said ND was his ‘dream job’, but when ND did not agree with lowering its entrance requirements, that’s when Meyer decided to accept the coaching position at Florida.
stevek @ 4:36 pm:
Dana is right on the ND entrance requirements angle, Urban Meyer and all. Can’t see us lowering the requirements either.
We know we need a top coach, but if the recruiting standards will always force us to settle on 4 star recruits who can hack the books versus 5 stars who are dumb as rocks, then we need a coach who can lift the 4 stars beyond themselves and make them play like 5 stars …like Peterson does.
As conservative and cautious as AD Guerrero is, does anyone really belive that AD Guerrero would really chance it on Nuehiesel?
Diego @ 4:38 pm:
I like peterson and have endorsed him in the past. He is becoming the popular choice, but I never know what the Administration is thinking. When I finally have them figured out, or so I think, BAM, they go another direction; usually a terrible one!!
Diego @ 4:41 pm:
The only issue with Peterson is whether it’s him, or it was Hawkins. Hawkins built Boise, but he hasn’t done anything at CU. I’d like to think Peteron helped build it, but rumors are that Hawkins was more of the architect of the Boise State system. If that’s the case, then Id on’t know where that leaves us.
I’m somewhat torn between a builder and a winner. There are coaches that are great at building the program and can create the culture and expectation of winning. At the same time, there are those that come into a place that has massive resources, take full advantage and impose their winning ways (Carroll, Erickson, to name a few). Both are effective and both are out there.
I think, given that UCLA’s resources are already present, a winner is the best option to choose.
Diego @ 4:47 pm:
Louis, some times, life gets in the way. LOL
Tustin Bruin @ 4:54 pm:
I totally agree. The naked bootleg that was called at our own end in the Notre Dame game was the most stupid call I have ever seen. What’s worse is that Ben Olsen got hurt on the play. I will forever be upset with Dorrell for the Notre Dame loss. We only get a chance to play them every 40 years. We should have won last year’s game as well as this year’s I just wish that Osaar Rasshan had played in the game. We would have won.
Louis Miranda @ 5:01 pm:
Hey crack baby bob, you continue to kiss Dorrells ass and you rant with such sexually explicit profanity that we are all now convinced that you are a homosexual. Though I’m straight and have been married to a beautiful woman for 8 years doesn’t mean I have any animosity towards gay people.
The mos t insulting thing about you Bob is your lack of class and your total stupidity. Please stop fantaszing about me and some of the other writers you disagree with in such obvious perverted language. Go to a gay website, which I’m sure you visit and stay off this one. We all find you ignorant and sexually disturbed.
Bob @ 5:22 pm:
You have to admit though that our head coach does have the nicest a$$ in the nation. I just wanna mount that thing and take a ride…
Bulldogs 4 Bruins @ 8:56 pm:
Gotta agree with Diego, what has Peterson really accomplished? He inherited the program and the team. Granted, he is a good OC, but how much of an impact did he have in establishing the program or recruiting? At least he was smart enough not to change what he inherited.
Someone mentioned UCLA recruiting, while they on paper have done well, it would be interesting to see how the recruiting has gotten better or fallen off since Eric Bienemy (sp?) left the program.
My one last add, Who is in charge of conditioning these players? It sure seems that they are so very brittle, look at them and they on the D/L.
jeff @ 9:20 pm:
interesting that you mention the conditioning and injuries bulldog. I was reading about the hire of E.J.”Doc” Kries,Ucla’s strength and conditioning coach. and granted he has won about 5 NCAA S. & C. of the year awards. it is also noted that some of the programs he was at,had problems with injuries and such when he was the S.& C. coach. so maybe it could be “Doc” Kries’s program getting our players injured?

dana @ 12:24 am:
Diego,
Your point about Hawkins and Peterson is something I’ve expressed before as well.
For one, we have no idea how well Peterson’s success will translate outside the WAC. A coach with a small school might need to do different thigns than a coach with a larger school with more talented recruits.
Hawkins, his predecessor, also enjoyed great success with Boise for a number of years but hasn’t found the same success at Colorado. (If the BCS had changed their rules to allow schools like Boise get into a BCS bowl earlier, then Hawkins might have been the one who could have scored a great upset at a BCS bowl game and enjoyed all the ensuing fanfare.)
Also, ideally, I’d like a candidate with more experience to give us a larger sample size to judge from. There have been other coaches who came in and also had immediate success, but couldn’t sustain that without their predecessors’s recruits- Seifert in the NFL, Coker at Miami, Rick Nieuhiesl at Colorado, etc..
But, UCLA is never going to lay down the cash to go after the ‘perfect’ candidate so its best, cheaper option is to go catch a rising star.
e40wada @ 8:01 am:
dana, you’re right. Sorry I misspoke about ND lowering entrance standards for Weis. Which is even more damning to UCLA’s program and KD given that Weis has pluck a few 5star recruits from So.Cal. Given the geographical location and advantages(beaches, mountains,Mexico all within a 2hr drive & sunshine 350 days a yr), plus the coed’s, why would anyone in their right mind choose to go to South Bend Ind. v. Los Angeles.
This in itself says a lot about KD and his recruiting abilities. At the same time does anyone know what resources($$$$) are available to KD compared to Weis or Carol for that matter, when it comes to recruiting? Its seems everytime I read or hear something regarding both ND&U$uC they are always on the recruiting trail.
I rarely hear anything regarding recruiting trips with KD’s group.
John W. Reagan @ 8:38 am:
The Bruins will lose to ASU this weekend, and will end all hope of a decent bowl bid. Not such a bad thins sice Dah-rrell would only lose tthe bowl game anyway. Anyone remember the Las Vegas bowl and losing to Wyoming? You have heard it here first, ASU easily 45 - 24. Also, UCLA will be crushed by Oregon and Suc Cal to finish the Dah-rrell era.
Diego @ 10:19 am:
Dana- my sentiments are similar. UCLA’s obtuse outlook when it comes to its football coach is the primary reason why II contributed coaching options like Jerry Moore of Appalachian St or Jim Leavitt. Moore is interesting, because he’s at the lower level, much like Jim Tressel was. He’s established, respected and he has built his program around success and a sense of winning. I dont’ know how he’d be able to perform in recruiting, but what I can say is that he’ll have all resources at his disposal. Additionally, the option of hiring a known, former star player on your staff that will help you recruit (read Ken Norton for SUC and Bienemy formerly for UCLA) is present at UCLA.
I know that UCLA won’t spend the money, so a well established coach in 1aa is a strong option; not unlike Jim Tressel proved to be for Ohio State.
