Stoops Beats Dorrell In Monster.com Bowl, Gets Another Year

Hi-larious … and you thought we were making this stuff up for kicks. We told you all year that the Arizona game was going to be this year’s version of the Monster.com bowl where the game’s losing coach would be looking for a job. In last year’s Monster.com bowl Arizona State’s Dirk Koetter lost to Dorrell and then promptly lost his job, as we scripted. In this year’s Monster.com bowl, Mike Stoops coasted his Arizona team to a victory over Dorrell and what does he get for it??!! He gets another year, according to Tom Deinhart of Sporting News:

Mike Stoops will be back at Arizona next season. That word comes from Arizona’s school president, who on Monday night ended speculation there could be a coaching change in Tucson.

We print it here, it happens there. Too funny … wait a minute. If Stoops is back next year … then … Dorrell is …

The worst part for me about the Dorrell talks is the possibility that a win over SC could save his job. I would never root against UCLA against SC, but lately i haven’t been watching, almost rooting for a loss. The game last was one of the most memorable days of my life(I’m shameless), but i don’t know if I can root for UCLA if I know it means Dorrell will be back.

I feel your pain. However, how is it even possible for Dorrell to keep his job with a win over SuC? If he loses 2 out of 3 that puts us at 6-6. After starting the year ranked in the top 25, even Dorrell supporters have to see that he has not show progress. Lucky for us, that win over SuC won’t happen. It’s away (which we’ve had trouble with), it’s in SuC’s house, AND Cheaty Petey is going to be looking for redemption after what happened last year and this year.

Stu @ 3:46 pm:

I agree…while the loyal Bruin in me ALWAYS wants to beat $uC, I cannot fathom another year of KD. Best case scenario is the UCLA does JUST bad enough for DG to say bye-bye to KD, but no so horrid so as to scare away more prospective talent then needed to get KDR in place.

Louis Miranda @ 4:01 pm:

I really don’t care about the seniors as much as the kids that are left with this mess. Tthe sniors in my opinion haven’t stepped up except for Christian Taylor. Ther is enough talent left over that with good coaching can have a decent record next year and set the tone for 09. Remember Ohio St. with Jim Tressell won the title in his second year. Same goes for Bob Stoops at Oklahoma and Pete Carroll in his third year. We have had this coach for 5 years now- zero pac 10 championships of course no Natinal Championships 1-3 against USC 1-3 in bowl games against inferior teams the worst blowout I have ever witnessed in 42 years against USC 19-66 in 2005. He should be fired before the next game we play before his loser’s disease infects the younger player’s permanently.

Louis Miranda @ 4:33 pm:

Stu, don’t worry about scaring talent. As soon as we get a coach that is proven maybe Chris Peterson; recruits will definetly set their sights on UCLA. To his credit Dorrell has gotten more than a few 4 star player’s. Can you imagine how many more 4 and 5 star player’s UCLA will get with a competent coach in charge. USC will get some serious competition finally when it comes to recruiting.

Louis Miranda @ 5:07 pm:

By the way Bob, I’d love to put on tne gloves and box for a few rounds. At the end of the exhibition you would be looking up at me as I ask you to stand up and take a little more of a beating. I trained with former heavyweight contender Eddie the animal Lopez. Great guy. Taught me quite a bit about boxing.

Hector Miranda @ 5:42 pm:

BOB - not that Louis and I or related (we’re not) or anything, but; you do know you are at the DUMP DORRELL website, don’t you? If you’ve been at the website long enough, you’ll know that Dorrell being allowed to finish the season is a given, and most of here have chosen to concentrate our energy on getting a good if not great replacement.

I cannot fathom your reasoning. Do you not watch our Football games? What makes you think another year or two is going to improve things one iota? I have to wonder if you would recommend a buddy of yours stay with a two timing girlfriend, or a bipolar manic depressive, or what have you. At what point do you not just admit you have seen enough and walk away?

Also, I have to agree with Louis’ comments vis-a-vis the boxing. I’m pretty certain you would never utter those fighting words to another human being in public. What makes you so comfortable saying them here?

Bob @ 5:47 pm:

GIVE DORRELL A RAISE! HE IS DOING FINE! WE ARE BASKETBALL SCHOOL ANYWAY MAN. WHO GIVES A SH!T ABOUT FOOTBALL!??

Louis Miranda @ 6:26 pm:

Judging buy the way you continue to unravel Bob; It’a time for you to consider seeking a mental health specialist. You are obviously insane.

DANA PT BRUIN @ 6:29 pm:

BOB MAN………YOU ARE SO SELFISH. PLEASE GROW UP. WE ALL WANT TO WIN ….BASKETBALL AND YES FOOTBALL. DUMPING DORRELL IS GOOD….

Kai Class of 86 @ 6:37 pm:

Because I actually attended classes with the man, I felt that I just had to give him a break. Well, break time is over. It is pretty obvious that something isn’t right with UCLA football, and whenever it comes down to fixing a problem, there is only one place to start: The Head Coach. That would be Karl Dorrell. If you cannot beat the absolute worst Notre Dame team in 44 years, you cannot nor should not coach at UCLA. Period. There isn’t anymore to say on the subject. I know that we are going to close out the season losing to Arizona State and USC. I know that. Let the man finish out his season, then just end it.

Kai Class of 86 @ 6:43 pm:

I think that Bob is either Karl Dorrell, or a senior on the team.

former Bruin @ 7:57 pm:

Everyone is entitled to their opinion when it comes to athletics in the public sector, but I find it absolutely despicable that someone who would call themselves a fan would quit rooting for their team so UCLA may acquire a new coach. That is exactly what is wrong with fans in Los Angeles and why the crowd at the Rose Bowl the first of January 1999 was 50-50 red to blue. Bruin fans selling their tickets to Badger fans because the bandwagoners fell off after a heartbreaking loss at the Orange Bowl. Stick with a team through thick and thin or get off the bus.

e40wada @ 7:46 am:

Bob, you’re right UCLA is a basketball school, but it has the resources to be both. Given what Tim Floyd is doing across town is proof. U$uC has a great recruiting class coming in next yr on top of what they have this yr(which includes probably the number 1 or 2 pick in the NBA draft next yr, in O.J. Mayo), which will hopefully create a national interest in the rivalry like Duke v. UNC. I truly believe the reason U$uC was able to afford Floyd was because of all of the BCS bowl payouts they have received since Carol arrived.

So if U$uC can hire a top notch coach & recruit strong in Bball in an attempt to emulate UCLA’s success, why can’t UCLA compete with U$uC on a yr to yr basis in Football? Lack of concern or poor management??

DANA PT BRUIN @ 8:52 am:

A BACKUP PLAN….ASU VS UCLA. I just joined the DUMP DORRELL group. This Saturday I want a win soooo bad. But we have to be real in life. So I am packing my car and ready for some fun and sun at Lake Havasu. I just can not take a HARD LOSS like last weekend. I will be at the Rose Bowl Saturday….but with any Dorrell Depression…I leave for the river. Hope for a victory, but had enough bad news this season. I need to smile, laugh, and a positive energy weekend. One way or the other I will get it, I hope at the Rose Bowl.
