Another Mistaken Plea: TJ Simers Says Mistake To Fire Karl Dorrell

You think Dorrell getting fired is a lock?!! Today we get another pathetic final plea to save Karl Dorrell. This time it's TJ Simers with an article about how it would be a mistake to fire Dorrell. What a piece of work TJ is. Just 2 days ago he calls UCLA's football program a "joke" and now, even after saying it was a mistake to HIRE Karl Dorrell, TJ says it will be a mistake to FIRE Karl Dorrell. WTF?? And you want another WTF? TJ uses the same pathetic excuse the race-baiting hypocrite Bob Keisser of the LB Press Telegram used yesterday in his last gasp plea to save Dorrell … injuries (TJ):

UCLA didn't get it right when they hired him, which wasn't his fault. Now they'll probably goof again and fire him for things again out of his control. He goes into Saturday's game against the ninth-ranked team in the nation with his fourth-string quarterback, a week after playing a walk-on at running back and a scrambling quarterback with a tender hamstring. Name a coach who looks like he knows what he's doing when armed with so little.

TJ goes on to show how Carroll has only had to deal with a 2nd string QB starting just once (which is the sole reason why he is winning and Dorrell isnt??!!) … how convenient that he chooses to overlook coaches from all the other … oh … 118 Div 1 football programs out there who continue to win WITH injuries. Say, for example, Utah! Utah, the winless team who crushed us this year, when we had our starting QB and RB and WRs and OL and DL (save one player), when Utah had THEIR 2nd string redshirt freshman QB, backup RB, backup top WR, backup OL, and basically inexperienced freshman and sophomores on both sides of the ball. What about that game TJ?? What about the OTHER 4 years of mediocrity??

Dorrell gets no breaks, predictions from the very start of doom — and his own gloom not helping — carrying more weight than any sign of progress. How many years is it now that his job has been in jeopardy — everyone eventually getting it right? And yet in this age of college football parity, Dorrell's team went 10-2 two years ago.

Oh booohooo, Dorrell gets no breaks. DORRELL GOT A BREAK WHEN HE WAS HIRED! TJ even opened his column saying that. Dorrell gets paid a cool $1 million a year for not doing his job … that seems like a pretty good break to most people. And we are supposed to take a flash-in-the-pan 10-2 season as evidence that Dorrell can coach and we should keep him?? What planet is TJ living on?

Now he's firmly in the sights of those who blog, or fill the message boards with their bombastic opinions of how the job might be done better. Throw in the media, who can't write his name without adding a comma and a suggestion the end is near, and together the media and the Internet sense a kill — making every loss or misstep read like an atrocity against mankind.

Hi-larious. Now who is being "bombastic" TJ … "atrocity against mankind?" Please. And TJ, you should check your facts. Your colleague Chris Foster says that we on the internets are "insignificant" so what we say apparently doesn't matter anyway. And now TJ is saying that Dorrell isn't even getting support from Dan Guerrero. That is not true. We have watched Dan Guerrero for over a year now very carefully. He HAS supported Dorrell in just about every way, constantly throwing positive stats to the media every week, and never saying a negative word about Karl, always saying he will give him all his support … save for one comment last week that could have gone either way. Again, talk about "bombastic." TJ Simers asks for Dorrell to be given one more year to fail or succeed … how many effing times will we have to hear this loser argument (has TJ even considered what is in store for '08?!):

He should get the chance to finish what others started — when they put him in this position of learning on the job — and return next season. Let's see what he does when given a fair and healthy chance to succeed. Or fail. What is this rush to fire folks in sports?

Dorrell HAS HAD HIS CHANCE! What … 5 years and $5 million isn't a chance?? 25 seniors and a soft schedule isn't a chance? The rush to fire is hardly that. A CEO making the same amount of money but pulling in 3% rate of return for 5 years to his/her investors would surely be fired without a single ripple of sympathy from ANYONE. Why do college sports coaches, coaches(!!!), getting paid millions, suddenly deserve our sympathy?? Demanding sympathy for a highly compensated sports coach who isn't near getting the job done after such a long time is the problem TJ. Get it right. Even Karl Dorrell isn't making the injury excuse, choosing his "fighting words" carefully:

"I'm not quitting," Dorrell says. "I'm a fighter, and I'm not about to hide behind any excuses, injuries or anything like that. I come from a military family, and I was taught to take what you've got and make the best of it. "I know what's going on out there, and I feel we need to win. But I also feel we have the players here to win, and we're really close to having a great program here. This is important to me, and I want to be here."

Actually, we're glad to see Dorrell finally fight … only it's too late. And we are nowhere near "close to having a great program here" at UCLA. No where near. Any questions people on the task at hand?? This is not a lock folks. We need to keep applying the pressure!!!

Bob @ 9:50 am:

If Dorrell wins out and takes us to the Rose Bowl, he deserves to stay one more year.

DumpDorrell @ 9:56 am:

Bob … we have said if Dorrell wins the conference we will shut this site down.

Daryl @ 10:31 am:

Do these comments get forwarded to these column writers? Do they ever respond to you? I think these are well-thought responses, particularly in relation to a CEO and his perfomance. It reflects a societal problem as a whole…lets make concessions to the world. It is a no-win: 1 group will complain of not being able to be hired because of their race and then by all means it would be racist to fire someone if they are not white because it must mean an issue of their race. Personally, Tony Dungy is the top 1 or 2 coaches in the NFL, and if all of a sudden his team played sub-par football year-after-year, would his termination be an issue of race??? Probably not going to happen…Seems that concessions are another form of racism…accomodating the victim mindset.

Jim @ 10:55 am:

Excuse me TJ but KD was at full strength in Utah and he had his ass handed to him by a team that has losses to Air Force and UNLV. It sounds like you are scared and backing off fearing that you might have exacerbated his demise and you are now fearful of being lump in with everyone else when the race card is played. Let the race card be played and let UCLA find a coach, black, brown, white, or female I don’t give a sh!t. When you start donating TJ to UCLA, then we will care about what you have to say. Meanwhile go back to your rag of a paper and find some other pathetic LA team to hound, there are plenty here to be hounded.

Scott Bilo @ 10:59 am:

There must be some seriously blind and dull people in Bruinland. How, after all we have seen in these miserable five years can there be anyone left who has not seen the complete unravelling and dismantling of a once proud program? Who are you people that claim that Dorrell should be given another chance? What else do you need to see?
Let us face reality, once and for all.
Dorrell is not going to win the PAC-10. Dorell is not going to get this team to the Rose Bowl, or very likely any other Bowl. In about a month, many a Bruin fan will be lamenting the fact that there will not be any Bruin football after we are soundly defeated in these next three games. We will all be very pleased that Ben Howland and his basketball squad will be there to give us some sense of sports salvation.
A co-worker of mine here in Boston put it to me bluntly about a month ago. He simply stated that UCLA is too great an institution, with far too large an alumni and student base to accept this mediocrity, or in the current state, pathetic excuse for a program.
In closing, 5-4 is great in Conference USA. It works for Navy. It works especially well in the Sun Belt and MAC. It simply is inexcusable in the PAC-10, especially when you return 20 starters, and have 25 seniors onboard. If it is a train wreck now, what do you all think it will be like a year from now when the Bruins return two starters and lose 25 seniors? If Dorell can’t win with what he has now, than how then? Let’s end this rediculous debate, dump Dorrell, and bring in someone who has half of a chance of restoring some dignity, fun, and energy back into this lethargic program.

Jim @ 11:05 am:

Email the living crap out of TJ and make sure he knows that we will go after his ass too. A man coming from Northern Illinois University thinks he can stand here and tell us, The University of California Los Angeles, what to expect from our sports program. Does Northern Illinois University even have a corn field large to play football on.

Bob @ 11:31 am:

DD,
Even if Dorrell wins the conference this year with 4 losses? You would really shut the site down? Or does he have to win the conference outright?

tp @ 11:32 am:

yep.. the end to any arguments is to bring up the utah game. no excuses KD. hey apologists, still not convinced? watch the game again. and again. and again.

SD Bruin @ 11:33 am:

I don’t care if win the next three games plus a rose bowl by 50 points each game—DORRELL HAS TO GO!!!

Utah, Florida State, $uc (66-19), both Notre Dame losses, Arizona (52-14), Wazzu (all the losses), Wyoming, and on and on the reasons just pile up—what the hell else do you idiots need???? 76-0 by Oregon, ASU, or $uc???

Please—fire this clown, this Doofus, and let’s bring in a seasoned head coach to correctly set this program in the direction it needs to go.

mikey @ 11:35 am:

On Keisser and Simers:
Ever notice that the likes of Keisser and Simers don’t have a background in oh…SPORTS!?
Ever see a motorsports writer that has experinced 200 mph for hours on end at 140 degrees? Or a sports beat hack that has ever “laced em’ up” and been smacked around by 250 pounds O’ meat for 4 quarters? And finally, Ever see any of these illiterate hacks make a split second, 4th and one decision that could alter the outcome of a game, a season or a young athelete’s career? NO! Kinda’ like Duh-rell, they are clueless.

Louis Miranda @ 12:30 pm:

Bob, did you and e40wada drink the same kool-aid. You are both a couple of ignorant a-holes to want this complete incompetent to con tinue to lead the football team. It’s dickheads like you that have no expectations for greatness that the UCLA administration loves. This site is for Bruin fans, not ignorant drug-addicted traitors like the two of you.

jeff @ 12:37 pm:

o.k. so if by some miracle, dorrell does win the next three games against top 25 teams,no-doubt,he should come back next year. that is a brutal 3-game stretch, and will prove how if any,if he is any type of a good coach. the pac-10 is still in our hands. if we win out-right,he stays! plain and simple. although we all know its highly unlikey. but with rashan at Q.B. I thin we have a new found offense and could win the next three. as for T.J. Dumbass! he’s just a moronic dipsh_t who is just a little b_tch ass sports writer. what no-one else cares to mention,is that dorrell is pathetic against ranked teams. so our three game stretch in the next few weeks doesn’t look good. everyone here has to admit though, that Rashan could be F’ng awesome! so we could win out! sound off Bruin Fans!

dana @ 1:26 pm:

The LATims have the most pathetic sports columnists- Plascke, Adande, and Simers. Its embarassing. The strange thing is that the rest of the paper is pretty good, including the rest of the sports section.

Boston Globe was probably the best in compiling the best sports columnists.

Louis Miranda @ 1:34 pm:

Bob, I can describe in two words. Crack Baby! You dumb jack-ass you would be satisfied with 8-4. What a loser! Pucker-up Dorrell kiss ass.

bruinz @ 1:48 pm:

bruinz @ 1:52 pm:

Unfortunately Bob is smoking crack again and this site will get a serious cash influx after this season is over with (since DG won’t have the guts or anything else to fire KD)

e40wada @ 2:30 pm:

Bob dont fall for Louie M’s inability to communicate intelligently. That in itself indicates he is not a true UCLA fan. We are able to express ourselves rationally and intellectually. I’m looking for good, well thought out feedback, not immature babble L.M.

Bob you are right nothing should be done until after the season regardless. Its only fair. UCLA has never had a rep of firing coaches during the middle of the season. Even Lavin made it through his horrific last season and it would have been a justifiable firing if DG did let him go during the season.

Johnbruin @ 3:44 pm:

Dorrell’s inconsistency is sufficient grounds for firing him at the end of the season, even if he wins the Pac-10 and the Rose Bowl. In fact, it’d prove how unpredictable the team is under him. Sadly, it would be impossible to fire a HC who won his conference title - plus he’s got other things in his favor: the race factor (which is probably over-rated); his good, clean, Bruin image; and most importantly the all-so Bruin sympathy for the underdog (Ah, those gutty Bruins).

Many ‘romantic’ Bruins would prefer an unranked Bruin team making a rare major upset (U$C in ‘06) rather than a ranked Bruin team fighting its way to a NC. Upsets are better than NC’s to fans of sports movies (Rudy or Indestructible). And Dorrell’s bipolar Bruins can serve up the drama - which team will show up this Saturday?

Some of Dorrell’s supporters still hope for a Cinderella story where he turns UCLA into a football powerhouse! (The inexperienced, gutty young Bruin overcomes adversity and hardship to become a super coach with dozens of NC’s and a UCLA football dynasty - the part of Karl Dorrell will be played by Chris Tucker) The trouble is magic doesn’t exist.

OK. I admit it - *I* liek a good underdog story, like the 1980 US Olympic Hockey team. But stories like that stand out because they only happen a few times a century … and also we got there through good players and coaching, not magic.

Louis Miranda @ 4:05 pm:

e40wada, you call yourself intelligent but like crack baby Bob you continue to think Dorrell is worthy of finishing the year and you show your true kiss ass nature by hoping D. Walker is groomed for the job. You stupid whore of mediocrity.

jeff @ 5:59 pm:

o.k. so everyone here. what do you think should happen, should dorrell win the next 3 games, and a number 3 recruiting class lined up for next year? stay still? or go? doubt he will make it happen. let’s say he does though? what then? what bothers me the most,(and fellow briuns,i want ur opinion on this) is that natonally, Ucla is has no respect in college football and is an always an afterthought. and that comes from dorrell and his teams losing to horrible teams! I heard the two guys on here arguing and you both have great points! Ucla, with our tradition, prestige, and athletes we should be able to recruit,we should be competing for the National Championship every year! just like USC. I hate the F’ing trojans, but make no mistake! they have one of the best coaches ever in C.F. history. there is no-way in hell!,we should have lost to any of the 4 teams we did,and we should be ranked #1 or #2 right now. another example of horrible coaching. dorrell goes with Mecloud Bethel Thompson againts N.D. he throws 28 passes, which Olson or Cowan hadn’t even done,up to that point, and ND is giving up 210 yards a game rushing! that was un-f’ing believeable! if rashan was in there,we win by 30 or more! another (worst moment in dorrell coaching!) And can anybody! somebody please! TELL ME WHY MATT SLATER DOESNT F’ING START!???? F’ING UNBELIEVABLE!

David @ 6:13 pm:

If Dorrell’s team was so great when they went 10-2, why did they get crushed that year by SC? How many more years of this do we have to endure? UCLA football is unwatchable. Did we REALLY lose to Notre Dame this year? Navy beat Notre Dame. Delaware beat Navy! Could Delaware beat UCLA? Maybe. Can we just fire him and get it over with? Puhlease! I’m going crazy. It sucks but I root for UCLA to lose so that KD gets fired. It’s come to THAT! Anyone else here in the same boat?

Bob @ 7:35 pm:

Miranda,
What were you expecting from our football team at the beginning of this year? A national championship? A pac10 championship?

You are probably one of those unrealistic, pu$$y ass homers who thinks we are going to win it all every year, and want to fire someone whenever it doesn’t happen.

StumblingCat @ 8:33 pm:

As an un-biased observer of UCLA football, I can say with all honesty that you need a new, better head coach.

You really put UA fans in a bind by losing to us last week. We’ll suffer another 4-8 season and be stuck with one of the most incompetent AD’s and head coaches in the country for another year minimum. My question, how do you lose to Notre Dame and somehow beat Cal? If I was the coach and this $hit happened to me, I’d cut the entire team and recruit a bunch of walk-ons who are actually proud of the school.

Here’s the link to our continued suffering:
http://www.azstarnet.com/sports/210148

Don @ 10:25 pm:

I’m interested in what Guerrero will do after the season. I mean this fiasco begin with him. Over the last five years there have so many stupid mistakes made from the a.d. to the water boy what can we expect? What good is the number 3 or whatever class if the coach can not coach them. A program at a school like UCLA doesn’t get to where we are now all because of Dorrell, he’s had a lot of help! Like a O-line coach who can’t devise proper blocking schemes, that’s why we are down to third and fourth string backs. Well here’s some advise for KD.
1. Move Slater or Austin to running back.
2. Go with Rashan
3. Blitz, Carpenter is not that fast
4, Please no more field goals inside the 20. Go for it, you have really nothing to loose.
5. No matter what don’t put Bethel - Thompson in.

Gary @ 11:04 pm:

Guerrero should fire Dorrell NOW so that we can actually root for wins versus ASU, OREGON and SC. If we win any of those games, Guerrero will use that as a reason to bring him back. If Dorrell doesn’t go now….I am rooting for us to lose out…it’s the only way that idiot will ever have the b*lls to make the move he should have made last year after the Notre Dame goof in South Bend.

Gary @ 11:06 pm:

Dear Pu$$y Bob…

We should expect NOT to lose to teams with losing records….we should expect to not be the only win for a horrible team like Norte Dame this year who even NAVY beat IN SOUTH BEND…open up your eyes idiot…Dorrell is the reason for the demise of this program.

Gary @ 11:09 pm:

Hey Bob…

Does Dorrell have pictures of you with a donkey or something. Get real dude….there is NO WAY we win out. We will lose the last three games by a combined total of a minimum of 85 points. Dorrell must go so that we can recruit better talent and then put them to good use in game situations. Back away from the crack pipe Bob….it’s time to take your dose of reality

Jesse @ 11:11 pm:

Bob Keisser article was joke and then some. As an Afro-american UCLA fan, I am pushing and pleading Dan G to fire Karl Dorrell. I even got ecited to hear that the Boise State coach could be a candidate if Dorrell is dumped. Fire Dorrell and bring in a coach that can win. That is all we ask.

Jesse @ 11:13 pm:

Sorry, in my haste to get this done before my computer started to give me problems, this is what I should have said:

Bob Keisser article was joke and then some. As an Afro-American UCLA fan, I am pushing and pleading for Dan G to fire Karl Dorrell. I even got excited to hear that the Boise State coach could be a candidate if Dorrell is dumped. Fire Dorrell and bring in a coach that can win. That is all we ask.

Thanks and Fire Dorrell.

DumpDorrell @ 11:23 pm:

Gary, Bob, guys … lets keep it cool here. We dont want to have to moderate every comment. That would suck. So just bring down the volume on the rants.

November 7, 2007

Gary @ 12:42 am:

DD…

Sorry…I just can’t imagine how anyone but his own mother could stand up for Dorrel…as a season ticket holder, it is embarassing to watch. Honestly, he should have been canned last year.

Don Buck @ 10:37 am:

This comment is not specifically related to answering any of the above comments but bothers me a great deal.
1) Has the medical staff at UCLA delved into the specific causes of knee injuries and concussions happening to our Bruin squad in huge numbers this year. For example, is the confusing west coast offense three step drop enough space for an immobile QB to survive hits to the knee; is the head gear sufficient etc. We seem to have more than our share of specific injuries.
2) The LA Times and LA Daily Press printed articles recently that Raashan would start at QB this weekend and Dorrell was quoted as saying he will “scale down” the playbook. Now that’s a laugh if ever there was one We have the most predictable and dull offense in D1 and Dorrell’s statement is a huge hit on his confidence in Osaar and the offensive line.
3. If Dorrell is released can we afford ($$$$$$) the dollars necessary to get the type of college coach we need; one who relates to college kids; and one who lives and dies on winning not just seeking week to week minimal “fourth quarter improvement”.
Enough said today.

Louis Miranda @ 12:00 pm:

Bob I don’y expect us to win a National Championship every year ,but lets be realistic even if in the unlikely event they win their last 3 games and finish 8-4 with the pac-10 championship that is good- but why in the world would you want a coach so obviously unprepared who cannot consistently have his teams ready from one week to the next rewarded with yet another year of the same dissappointments we have all had to endure for 5 long years. He’s not going to get any better and for you to call ypurself a fan and be satisfied is beyond me. No one team can win the National Championship but were never even the mix with a possibility to play in that game. UCLA should have a coach that will give the confidence that we can not only compete for pac-1o championships but every now and again has a good chance to win it all. If Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC Lsu.etc can do it why Bob do we always have to settle for no way, not us.

Louis Miranda @ 12:06 pm:

What I meant to say was no one team can win the national championship every year !

Louis Miranda @ 12:32 pm:

I have a possible scenario here. Ther is talk once again about Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville not being around next year. Maybe our next coach or gulp Karl Dorrell can see the wisdom in bringing back Al Borges as OC. He did a great job here and has done a very good job at Auburn. I believe under his system not only will Ben Olsen play to his potential, but the other QB’s will improve and understand his offense opposed to the stupid wco Dorrell continues to employ. Further proof that Dorrell is an idiot is that after 5 years of this complicated offense that is difficult for the kids to get used to; he is unwilling to change it to a pro-style or power I which no doubt would get better results.
