Dan Guerrero And A Dump Dorrell Reader With A Save Football Tshirt

A DumpDorrell reader who was at the game Saturday wearing his Save Football Dump Dorrell tshirt had a couple of interesting things happen to him. We will let Michael tell you in his own words (minor editing):

Just wanted to let you guys know about two things that happened in Tucson at the game this weekend. My girlfriend and I were wearing our “Save football, Dump Dorrell” T-shirts. Prior to the game we were sitting outside the stadium with a group of other UCLA fans. Two Fox Sports cameramen came up and asked everyone to do an 8-clap on camera (I’m guessing for “Bruin Rewind” since the game was on ABC). They told both of us that we could not be in the shot due to the shirts we were wearing. We explained that we were UCLA fans, just not Dorrell fans but they would not let us in the shot.

The second thing that happened is we were walking by the buses right as Dan Guerrero was outside of them. I was right next to him and looked at him, he looked at me, he looked at my Dump Dorrell t-shirt and I smiled. He gave me a nod and we both went on our way. I didn’t think it was the time or place to start any kind of banter with him. He definitely saw the shirt though. I kept explaining to Arizona fans that with Dorrell as our coach we never expect to win games. We want to win games, we hope to win games, but never can we expect a win. In any case, Go Bruins!

Nice! Thanks for the heads up Michael. Obviously, it’s hard to draw any conclusions from this about Dan Guerrero but one DD reader and Bruin fan knows what he saw. Great story.

great to hear! hopefully guerrero is feeling the pressure starting to boil! was thinking of who might be a next great coach for ucla. what do you guys think about norm chow? he would be a great coach. neuheisel has left programs in shambles and hasn’t made a name for himself as far as winning the big games! anyone think we could lure harbaugh away from stanford? maybe spurrier away from S.C? we need a proven coach! we need to start winning national titles!

  2. Grok451 Says:

Would be nice to start with Pac-10 Championships!

  3. Bruce Nagy Says:

I know that many UCLA grads and fans really want Rick Neuheisel, but he left Colorado with a looming NCAA investigation and had to forfeit all 11 of their games (believe 1997) because of use of ineligible player. Most of you know about UWA — Husky fans conplained the team was not longer physical and couldn’t run ball…wonder if he’s a god-forsaken West Offense guy….I would take a hard look at
Greg Schiano of Rutgers, Gary Patterson of TCU, Norm Chow, Steve Sarkisian….think Phil Fulmer of Tennessee may be looking to leave and of course Chris Peterson of Boise.

  4. Scott Says:

Chow makes a million plus to be the OC for the Titans, might be difficult to lure him away from that unless UCLA were to step up in the salary they pay the HC. Same thing with Spurrier, would take serious money to get him away from Soth Carolina. As far as Neuheisal I’m not necessarily sold either. Same thing for Peterson from BSU.

  5. Diego Says:

I repeat this over and over, we MUST HAVE A coach with HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE! PERIOD.

  6. yooklafan Says:

Yes Diego and we keep reading it over but yours is but an opinion, and as far as I know not any more pertinent because you write it fifteen times a day. I dont want another Dorrell but I have no objections to at least giving Norm Chow a shot and guess what else hes a minority canidate two birds one stone. There are I am sure more that one good answer to the next coaching question, but there are plenty of great coaches that got it right there first time you just gotta pluck em out of winning systems.

  7. Bob Says:

I think we should make Don Morrison our new coach. Let that crusty old dumb f*ck turn our program around. He seems inspired.

  8. jeff Says:

Me again guys! Norm Chow is the considered by most,to be the best offensive coordinator in college football history. he come from winning programs, and he isn’t just some reciever coach. he’s an offensive coordinator in the nfl. and many people have said they are shocked, that Chow has never been asked or offered a head coaching position. imagine our offense under chow? but bruin fans are right! we need someone of his caliber or just as good! the glory days are ahead of us guys and we will once again be a pac-10 and national championship contender!

  9. David Says:

just wanted to let everyone know that our painful sore is spreading up the coast. on the Murph and Mac morning show (KNBR San Francisco) they called the Bruins underachieveing and POORLY COACHED! they also listed our losses and the powerhouses (?) that have toppled the mighty dorrells.

  10. Bruin05 Says:

Bruce, I like your thought. I think it’s more productive to talk about possible coaching candidates than just bashing how horrible Coach Dorrell is.

First of all I think we need a good character guy. The only reason Dorrell lasted so long is because he’s a stand up guy, and we cannot deny the importance of that.

Secondly, we need a proven winner. Just like how Urban Meyer went from Utah to Florida and won a championship, or Tressel went from Youngstown St. to Ohio St. to win a championship. Winners at any level know how to win despite the level of competition (I’m not talking HS to College, but more Division IA or Division II to Division I).

Also, we need to consider West Coast contacts. Someone who can recruit well locally, because let’s face it, Southern Cali has tons of talent and you can will a championship just recruiting well locally.

Lastly, I think we would benefit from a younger coach than someone who’s time is setting.

On that note, I think Peterson from Boise State is a good choice, as well as the coach from Univ. of Montana who had his Masters in Education from UCLA. I also really like Harbaugh.

  11. pedro Says:

any coach is better than dorrell. i think dorrell should get some experience coaching high school football for least a dozen years before even considering head job at any major university.

  12. gb Says:

Chow looked great as the OC at ‘SC (no doubt assisted a little by Palmer, Leinart, Bush…), but the Titans overall offense is currently ranked #24/32 by espn. We need a proven head coach to turn the program around asap. Even if a guy like Chow could revive our offense, we need a balanced team to consistently compete for the PAC-10 title and beyond.

  13. pedro Says:

dont be silly…think norm chow would take a head position at ucla when his formal boss is still at …
    dream on

  14. Smbisym Says:

Norm Chow would be a great coach for UCLA!!! He almost took the Stanford job a couple years ago.

  15. Diego Says:

that’s not true about Chow. He has been offered head coaching positions, but he doesn’t want them. He has ADMITTED that he’s not a head coach, and truly doesn’t care to take on the responsibility. He wants to be able to focus on being a coordinator only. These are his words.

  16. Diego Says:

Chow only flirted with the Stanford job as a way of applying pressure on USC. Pete CArroll and Chow were at odds at the time of his departure. Carroll called his bluff on the threat to be the Stanfraud coach, and Chow folded. He ended up in Tennessee, whre he’s helping Vince Young fool everyone.

He’s just not a head coaching guy.

  17. Ric Says:

How about trying to get UCONN Huskies head coach Randy Edsall as our next HD? UCONN has only been in division 1 football 6 years and is already ranked in the top 20 on all polls. Edsall was the only coach to ever lead a team to a bowl in it’s first season at the Div.1 level. On another note, SMU has already fired it’s football HD to allow them plenty of time to find a replacement. If only we had an AD with cajones.

  18. Valencia Bruin Says:

    Ric,
we’re not hiring a coach from UCONN. gotta think bigger! he’s probably a descent coach, but not what were after. being in the top 20 this year doesn’t mean _ _ _ _! and he coaches in the big east conference (annual favorites to the pollsters). 3/4 of that conference would be doormats in Pac 10, SEC, Big 10 schedules.

    I say NO!

  19. Doug Says:

UCONN??? One wet dream year…please!! Chow, I am sorry, once a Trojan, always a Trojan. These fans who want Mariucci (after 49ers…NFL flunky) and some of the other names I have seen just says UCLA and the fans will settle for mediocre!!

Alabama..one year turn around. BC doesn’t skip a beat with a coach change. Florida coach change win BCS two years later.
Bruins fans already making excused for 3-5 yrs of misery for recovery. We need to think higher and expect more. Or just be happy with basketball. Same for Boise St. coach…look at last Boise St. coach at Colorado and ask them if they are happy. But of course UCLA fans won’t take risk on Rick..look at ASU and Erickson..not a bad decision. JUST WIN BABY!!

  20. dana Says:

I love this story cause its not something DG could ignore. Imagine if wherever DG went, he kept on seeing Dump Dorrell shirts…

Or, what if we were seeing Dump Dorrell shirts pop up on TV? I was watching the tv show “Chuck” tonight and a bunch of the actors were all wearing UCLA shirts cause their characters were supposed to have been UCLA graduates. It would have been Awesome! if you saw just saw some random character wear a Dump Dorrell shirt too.

  21. Valencia Bruin Says:

    Bruin 05,
I like your thoughts, but I think the coaching replacement needs to be modeled over the Ben Howland selection(a quick winner at the D-1 level that would jump for the UCLA job), much like Urban Meyer did for Florida.

UCLA has already taken a pretty sizable risk on KD. Do you think they’re going to do it again with a 1 year coach at Boise St, or the Montana coach. These guys are not accustomed to the pressure.

If UCLA is gonna make a move, Guerrero is gonna be very careful in who he selects, and I guarantee you, it’s gonna be a big time name (much like Howland).

  22. Valencia Bruin Says:

    Doug,
I’m with ya baby. WE NEED RICK!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Doug Says:

And if UCLA fans can’t swallow Rick…I give you another name to consider Jim Grobe Head Coach at Wake Forest. Look at what he has done with the smallest D1 school (4000 students) and been competitive in ACC and nationally. Exciting football. He has rebuilt programs twice at Ohio and Wake.

  24. Valencia Bruin Says:

Don’t know much about Grobe, but I’ll be reading up on for sure. Couple of other names I’ve heard about in the shuffle (non-blog shuffle) is Brian Kelly at Cincy and Jim Mora Jr. Any thoughts from on either of these guys?

  25. Doug Says:

Mora can’t have the job because his father cries too much!!!

  26. Valencia Bruin Says:

    Doug,
very funny on the mora crybaby thing! I just read Jim Grobe’s bio. He’s the ultimate and classy football coach. But I can’t imagine him leaving the east coast for crazy California. He was born and bred there, coached entire career there, family lives there, etc. Besides, he probably has absolutely no recruiting contacts in our backyard. Plus he’s probably older than what UCLA will be looking for.

I’d cross him off the list

  27. jeff Says:

o.k. bruins fans! so one day I will be the head coach at ucla and I guarantee pac-10 championships, national championships and heismans. but that is not for a while. seriously! you will remember the name jeff jackson. but what do u guys think about Spurrier,or maybe tommy tuberville? highly unlikey, but very interesting! sound off!

  28. dana Says:

I can’t see Mora Jr. coming to UCLA. He’s a graduate of Univ. of Washington, and Washington is his ‘dream job’. Mora got into some controversy when he said he would jump at the chance to coach Washington, even if the Falcons were still playing. And, with the way Washington is playing under Willingham, its surprising that Willingham has lasted this long and wasn’t already fired.

As for a big splashy hire, I can’t see the admin budgetting the money to do that.

  29. Hector Miranda Says:

I just want to weigh in on the Norm Chow for President conversation.

First of all, somebody mentioned it was easy to look good when coaching Leinart, Bush, and White, but you have it all wrong. He was a great OC at BYU; where he developed Steve Young and Ty Detmer. Ty Detmer won a heisman. Then he helped develop Phillip Rivers at NC State, who might have won heisman if not for: Carson Palmer who didn’t do much before Norm Chow showed up. Finally, i predicted doom and gloom for USC when Norm Chow left South Central, only to have Leinart ruin my predictions by staying another year. Now, Booty who was not developed by Chow is running the show, and the cracks are beginning to show.

I think Norm Chow would be a great coach, he is a proven big game coach. He has proven he can develop Quarter backs into great, some just good NFL Quarterbacks. And he left USC unhappy with Pete Carroll.

Granted, rumors abound he does not interview well, and the ability to run an offense does not prove he can run a football program, but he has a hell of a lot more creditentials than Dorrell has ever had. If DG where to pair this hiring with that off an equally proven DC it would be hard to match.

  30. Bob Says:

    AGREED!
    NORM CHOW! NORM CHOW!

He would be a great head coach!! Plus, he knows the ins and outs of USC’s program, so he could know how to out recruit them.

  31. Louis Miranda Says:

Doug, I couldn’t sat it any better. Bruin football fans stop being so negative and expecting a long recovery. Remember what Doug just said about Alabama and Urban Meyer at Florida. How about Erickson turning AsU around in his first year. I said earlier if we get a guy who can really motivate and discipline these player’s that are returning next year we could a lot better than we are now with all these seniors. UCLA can be a contender for the National Championship in 09 or 2010 with the right hire.
