Sports Illustrated: Karl Dorrell Is The Worst Coach In America
It simply cannot get any worse for UCLA. Anyway you spin the Dorrell era you cannot get away from the fact that massive sports news organizations are hammering our football program … and that is costing us millions. Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel, one of the most respected college football journalists in the country, has finally tagged Dorrell The Worst Coach In The Country (HT to bruinmike88 at BruinsNation):
That UCLA is officially the worst-coached team in America. OK, Karl Dorrell — I give up. You win. I’ve given you every opportunity to avoid this designation. I threw Al Groh to the wolves instead of you last summer even though Groh’s perennially middle-of-the-pack Cavs had accomplished no less than your perennially middle-of-the-pack Bruins these past few years. I included your team in my preseason rankings because I figured even you couldn’t screw up a team with 20 returning starters and an ultra-loaded defense. But I’ve gotta hand it to you, Karl — you’ve outdone yourself this time.
Washington State 27, UCLA 7. Just stare at that score for a moment and try to make sense of it. Granted, it’d seem a lot more bizarre if not for two other scores — Utah 44, UCLA 6 and Notre Dame 20, UCLA 6 — that preceded it. Mind you, we’re talking about a team that’s talented enough to have beaten Cal, won 40-14 at Oregon State and be currently tied for second in the Pac-10. But talent alone does not a team make.
I can offer no logical explanation for why UCLA continually fails to show up for certain games (a trend that’s been true throughout Dorrell’s tenure). I find it hard to believe the Bruins simply aren’t “motivated.” A possible Pac-10 title and BCS berth provide no shortage of motivation. The reality is, the Bruins are the definition of a poorly coached team, whether they’re going into games with ill-devised game plans or repeatedly making the kind of mistakes good coaches weed out. Of all the coaches on the hot seat right now — Bill Callahan, Dennis Franchione, Houston Nutt, et. al. — none has consistently done less with more than Dorrell. (And that’s saying something considering the competition.) Here’s guessing that notion will only be reinforced when UCLA, loser to 3-5 Washington State, turns around and beats 8-0 ASU or 7-1 Oregon in a couple of weeks, just to give its fans another temporary glimpse of what could have been en route to the Sun Bowl.

I just donated to the DD billboard. Just a suggestion, why not push the date back to allow some more time? Also, why not look for some sponsors or something? Maybe a radio station or even a magazine?
Hell maybe even some type of donation thing on the campus itself or after football home games (losses)?
NWBruin @ 4:17 pm:
Yes, I think Mandel very effectively summarized my viewpoint! I really wanted him to succeed and I hate for a good person such as he is to leave like this, however this simply is not the job for him. I sincerely wish him well, but it is time for him to go.

Somehow, I wonder why I should be so surprised the Bruins are performing so badly. This is not all that new. The past few years under Dorrell, UCLA starts out with a top-25 national ranking, plays well for a few games, then the wheels fall off, the team fails to show up to play some weak team that they should blow right out of the stadium, and the other team blows them out instead (Utah, Wash St). Then the whole season goes into a steep spiral the rest of the way, ending in a loss in a throw-away bowl game against a barely-Div 1A opponent. Last year’s win over USC was a total fluke, and in no way is evidence of superior coaching. The Trojans made the same mistake last year as what the Bruins are masters at… playing down to the level of their competition, or failing to get their heads in the game at all.
Who is this Jekyll-&-Hyde team? Do the Bruins decide to take the weekend off and let the Westwood High School team suit up in UCLA blue and gold in their behalf?
How could they lose to lowly Utah with 20 returning starters? Even more, with winless Notre Dame coming to the Rose Bowl and the prospect of getting even for the sting of last year’s last minute loss in South Bend, how could they not be motivated to completely smash the Irish? “Oh, let’s get a couple of field goals, that ought to be enough to win.” I understand having to put in a walk-on quarterback doesn’t help, but 4 picks? It sounded like this poor guy hadn’t taken any snaps in practice with the 1st team at all. My God, when you have one starting quarterback down with an injury, and your 2nd QB one snap away from a dislocated shoulder, or a knee or ankle injury, you’d better have your 3rd-string guy ready to play. And your 4th-string guy, too. From up here in Northern CA, it looked like UCLA was zero-prepared for this scenario.
And then this total embarrassment in Pullman last night against a 2-5 team that had lost 4 in a row at home. Doesn’t the fact that UCLA has lost 5 times in a row at WSU give anyone motivation to get a different result this year? UCLA evidently wanted to keep that losing streak alive at 0-6.
I’m not big at calling for coaches’ heads, but KD, DW, and JN are not performing (read: huge, gigantic understatement of the year). I’m listening to sports-talk radio coming out of San Francisco during the day, and the picks and prognostications on this last weekends’ college games went like this:
One host called UCLA the “phoniest PAC-10-leading team” in the conference. A professional picks fellow noted that, under Dorrell in the last 13 games when UCLA was picked to win while playing away from home, as they were last week, they have not only never covered the spread, they have lost all 13 games outright.
Up here, the 49ers’ coaching staff is taking a lot of heat for their losing season after having rosy, optimistic pre-season forecasts for doing much better than last year. Sports-talk radio has maintained it’s not the fault of coaching because there is a real lack of talent on the part of the 49ers right now. And you can’t blame lack of talent on coaching, but rather on the players.
The UCLA Bruins are not lacking for talent, and I think when you do have the talent and you get beat in games that you should win, then the onus falls on coaching. And saying over and over, “This was a disappointing loss. We need to do better…”, should be followed by the AD responding, “See ya later. Thanks for coming. Sorry it didn’t work out.”
dana @ 10:40 pm:
And, pretty soon, all the stories about which coach will jump ship to another team will start..
Boise State’s Peteson is the new shiny toy at Christmas, but I think another program will pay more and go after him more aggresively than UCLA. Plus, it still remains to be seen if that was just a flash in the pan.
Despite his record at Stanford, I wouldn’t mind Walt Harris. He was able to get it done at Pitt, and his successor, Dave Wanstandt, had trobule repeating that success.
Valencia Bruin @ 10:47 pm:
Dana,
You must think bigger. Administration is not going to hire Walt Harris. They’re better off keeping KD. Harris is not the answer.
JoeOCBRUIN @ 11:44 pm:
I can’t believe Dorkell went from beating a top 10 team to losing to again… another weak team. UTAH, ND and now WA St. He’s got to go. He doesn’t get the players ready to play teams everybody knows we should dominate. UCLA has played down to their opponents all season and look where it’s gotten us. No major bowl, no Pac10 championship. Give it to D-Walk and let him get us to the next level….

Diego @ 12:16 am:
JoeOCBruin= Seriously, you and other people that feel that Dwayne Walker is a viable pick for UCLA, need to stop RIGHT NOW!! He’s an extension of KD. He’s exactly the WRONG choice. We’re not going to hire YET ANOTHER coach that doesn’t have head coaching experience, that’s going to coach at a bargain (read cheap) and whose sense of the college game is a virtual nil.
You want another guy with Zero head coaching experience to take over the team? Are you kidding me? Those ofyou that are saying that need to really assess the error the in that statement.
D. Walker is as poor a choice as KD was when he was hired five years ago.
John W. Reagan @ 6:55 am:
UCLA must seek and hire a big name coach. Anything less is an unnecessary gamble with one of the formerly “elite” programs in the country. We need to start the wheels rolling this week, and Dah-rrell should be removed immediately!
e40wadw @ 7:44 am:
Diego, you’re right DW isn’t the right choice as HC, as of now. He needs a couple of more years before he’s ready for a major market high profile job like UCLA’s. I will continue to support Rick Nuehiesel or some other proven HEAD COACH to succeed KD. Ben Howland was a high profile coach from a major conference in Bball, the BIG EAST. DG should use the same criteria when hiring the next HFBC. The BIG EAST has a wealth of talented coaches, w/the exception of the Wanstandt-Pitt.
CoronaBruin1 @ 8:28 am:
This year has become a big disappointment already . I hope UCLA continues to flop now and doesn’t become bowl eligible. What a joke Dorrell has become. Maybe this is the only way to boot out Dorrell . The coaching is terrible. Dan Guerrero needs to do something or somehow get rid of him too. I can’t take it anymore !!
e40wadw @ 8:44 am:
UCLA lost a commitment, thanks agian KD!!!! Kemonte Bates, a 6ft 176lbs wr from Crenshaw(top 10 at his position) has changed his commitment to ASU. This decision was made on saturday. I wonder why?…..Refer to SI.com-truth&rumors ncaa:UCLA ad won’t dicuss Dorell-story:ASU wins over recruits.
WHP '68 @ 9:52 am:
e40wadw,
Can you clarify that URL please? Doesn’t seem to work.
Thanks,
Bill (WHP ‘68)
John W. Reagan @ 10:01 am:
I love Nuehiesel as a candidate. I am sure he would be on his best behavior at UCLA, and I know he would win, he always does!
e40wadw @ 10:13 am:
WHP’68-don’t know how to connect link, but go to SI.com, Click on Truth&Rumors,NCAA:UCLA AD won’t discuss Dorell, then scroll down.
Javier @ 10:22 am:
This is what I was afraid of. We are going to start losing recruits. Here is what Kemonte Bateman said of his decommitment: “It was my first time out here,” he said. “The atmosphere was great. Seeing a sold out stadium…that’s how I imagine a college football game would look like. It was a great game and I like how Arizona State gets the wide receivers involved in the offense.” “The atmosphere, the fans, the intensity and the coaches,” said Bateman. “It’s everything I wanted.” Story from Scout.com. There are other players that are starting to change their mind. CB Anthony Dye and Safety E.J. Woods. It’s only the begining. We need a coach that can attract this recruits again.
Javier @ 10:34 am:
I would also would love to see Nuehiesel. I think he would excite the players there and the recruits coming in.
georgereyes @ 10:35 am:
48,000 Season Ticket Holders. The Second Highest Attendance Average in the Pac 10. I guess DG wants Bruin Athletics to run in the red. Fire KD!
http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/Internet/attendance/IA_AVGATTENDANCE.pdf
Don Buck @ 10:44 am:
We all knew is was only a matter of time before some of the 25 recruits would start bailing out. We need to act immediately on this coaching issue.
Gasper77 @ 12:27 pm:
We UCLA alumni and/or faithful have ample reason to be frustrated and disgusted. The KD situation is nauseating and UNACCEPTABLE. However, sitting at our computers bitching is not productive.
I am convinced our failure to quickly raise the $11k for the billboard could conveniently be utilized by DG’s office as “evidence of a lack of support” for what we all know to be widely held beliefs. DG could point to the slow (or low) collection process to support his misguided conclusion that the entire DumpDorrell movement is just a handfull of perennially disgruntled gadflys!
If we can’t raise $11k for this clever “kick-off” for our noble campaign, how are we to raise $2.05 mil for KD’s buyout?
TIME TO QUIT WHINNING. TIME TO STEP UP AND CONTRIBUTE.
GO BRUINS!!
Steve Martin @ 1:03 pm:
Give it a rest with the Nuehiesel talk. He wrecked Washington and Colorado, he is a crooked bastard and that loser Matt Stevens always sucks up to this idea, he should be fired as well.
M. Smith @ 1:03 pm:
Have you chuckleheads that are drooling over the prospect of Rick Neuheisel returning bothered to look at his record? Both at Boulder and Washington his teams performed steadily worse with each passing year. In addition, as has been well documented he is rather ethically challenged. The last thing this program needs is RN. That said…..DUMP DORRELL!!
Buycker @ 1:23 pm:
Walt Harris would be a step backward, altho Trent Edwards seems to have overcome the stigma of last year’s Stanford debacle. Neuheisel isn’t perfect, but who is? I still think John ‘Chucky’ Gruden would give the program a kick.
WileyRamey @ 2:01 pm:
Dear Dump Dorrell We cannot assume that Dorrell will be gone next year. We must focus all of our efforts on dumping him. He will not be fired so long as he has a chance to win the conference. We cannot blame assistant coaches either. Its all about dumping Dorrell.
Scott @ 2:02 pm:
From SI.com’s FanNation.com regarding the recruit switching from UCLA to ASU:
http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/ncaa Filed under ASU winning over recruits…
Stu @ 3:10 pm:
As much as I’d love to see this bilboard go up, there’s soooo many other causes to donate to that I just can’t rationalize donating more than $20 or $50 or the like to this cause.
Diego @ 3:14 pm:
I like Neuheisel, but I just don’t know if our administration wants that.
alternatively, I would like a coach that has extensive college experience that entails winning. IT doesn’t have to be at the Division 1 level; it can be in 1aa. A coach of a program that has proven to be a winner. A coach that has cultivated an attitude of preparation, Football IQ, expectation of victory, effort, etc. This is how Jim Tressel arrived at Ohio State without having coaching in the top division. He was at Youngstown St. He took them to two national titles. That’s a coach that knows the college game, that knows how to win as a head coach at the college level. Tressel knows how to prepare his teams, his coaching staff, his entire school. It was clear that he was able to transfer the same attitude to the Buckeyes. All he needed was the resources at his disposal. At OSU, the resources are there. At UCLA, the resources are present, but the administration holds them back. If the Administration steps back and allows our school to no longer be the most underachieving program in college football history, a savvy coach like a Tressel would make the Bruins into the national title contenders that Dan Guerrero promised!
Marcus @ 4:44 pm:
Dennis Green? What do you think? West coast ties, college and head coach NFL experience, passionate and currently available. By the way, he website indicates that he is really up to speed on college athletics.
Jim @ 5:26 pm:
To Stu. This is the most critical issue in the world. What is more important curing cancer or getting rid of KD? That should put things in perspective. Getting rid of KD of course.
mark @ 7:15 pm:
Rick Neuheisel is the choice. He’s spent his time in purgatory. He’ll put the program back on the map!
Bruin 19 Row 72 @ 7:46 pm:
Here is the solution: Dump Dorrell and hire Norm Chow. He still lives in his house in Manhatten Beach and has 3 national championship rings. Not to mention he knows how to beat USC and would love the chance! Karl has no emotion and no leadership skills. Hire Chow!!
starman @ 8:15 pm:
Dorrell’s complete downfall was when he brought in his new dough head of an offensive coordinator! Loose the glasses, loose the West Coast offense, get up in the box, and call the plays! Stop roaming the sidelines with your head smothered in your play sheet.
Robert @ 8:23 pm:
Stop complaining. Dorrell is what he is. 5 years now, and nothing has changed. Dan Guerrero thinks he is doing a great job. It’s not time to get rid of Dorrell, but time to get rid of Dan. If Dan can not see the problem, then he is the problem. Want to make changes, then let’s protest to have Guerrero removed.
My choice, How about Steve Mariucci. Coached in the PAC 10 and in the pro’s. Evil nation accross town has done good with a coach that did not make it in the pro’s. Plus, HE KNOWS THE WEST COAST OFFENCE.
Jesse @ 11:20 pm:
Robert, I agree with your comments that Steve Mariucci would be a good choice for the head coaching position. The problem is that if we wait until after the season is over with, then we roll into basketball season and everyone will get a good feeling about the Bruins basketball team and forget the mess that is the football team. I have been patient long enough. Fire Dorrell. I have been a fan for almost 40 years, when they had owrse teams than this team, but at least they were competitive. This team looks like the scarcrow from the Wizard of Oz on some days—NO HEART. And this lies at teh feet of the head coach. Maybe we can get back at Sc and even hire Norm Chow. Or bring in the briefcase of Tommy Prothro. That would be an improvement over what we have now.FIRE DORRELL NOW!
StumblingCat @ 11:45 pm:
Mariucci would be a great fit at UCLA. I agree that Dan Guerrero is killing you guys by keeping Dorrell in place, makes you wonder what the hell he’s thinking…
StumblingCat @ 11:47 pm:
Then again, Norm Chow would be a great fit too. Really, a number of guys would do a better job than what is currently going on at UCLA. Dorrell makes Toledo look like the second coming of Pop Warner. Good luck with your quest guys!

Anthony Santos @ 12:25 am:
Dorrell is the worst coach in college football. He is the reason why we keep losing big, why we are so inconsistent, and why we are a second rate program. I know alot of bruin fans who are actually rooting we lose just so we can achieve a greater good by firing this “coach”. This guy has no fire in his belly, no passion, no desire to win, no game plan, and will for the fight. Dullard, if you are reading this, you should be a yoga instructor, not a head coach of a football program that should have a top 20 football program year in and year out.
Steve Bebic @ 6:58 am:
By Dorrell’s own admission in the L.A.Times he admits its the coaching. Why doesn’t Mr. Guerrero, admit this guy is not a head coach. He recruited the players and hired the asst. coaches and they do not perform so it’s time to go.
How about Ken Norton Jr. as a replacement?
Boycott the Rose Bowl maybe that will send a message.
Chuck B @ 12:10 pm:
My recommendation for the next Bruin coach is successful, respected and affordable - Pat Hill of Fresno State.
ted @ 12:23 pm:
Norm Chow was available before.
and probably he still wants be a UCLA Coach.
He was the reason USC got Two great QB. Now,
he’s gone. USC QB became nobody.
whle UCLA has DIII QB.
Need Chow right now.
Also he has a motivation Carrol.
Carrol got all the credit before.
Great UCLA vs USC rivalry.
Javier @ 2:19 pm:
This is what I don’t what to hear about hiring a coach because he is affordable. This is part of the problem of why we are were we are with KD. UCLA needs to start opening the bank and start paying for a good coach.
Chuck B @ 2:44 pm:
Being affordable isn’t the primary reason for hiring Pat Hill. He’s a proven winner with minimal resources. Eventually, he’ll make it to the Pac 10 and be very successful. Since the Bruins aren’t going to get Steve Spurrier, Urban Meyer or Bob Stoops. Hill is a very solid choice. Remember he came very close to beating the Reggie Bush / Matt Leinert Trojans.
BuckeyeBruin @ 2:52 pm:
I’m an Ohio State alum but I worked at UCLA for years and the Bruins became #2 in my heart. I’m sick and tired of feeling sick and tired before, after, and during UCLA football games. It’s a buzz killer even with the success of Ohio State under Tressel. Of course I don’t want UCLA to steal Tressel but he’s the kind of coach that’s needed. A real leader who has proved he can win championships (even if in I-AA). I backed Dorrell for several years figuring it would take time to right the ship, but CLEARLY the program is headed in the wrong direction. I’m making a donation to the billboard.
Jim D @ 3:11 pm:
I have been a UCLA fan since 1974. In 1985 I moved to Florida. I have been embarrassed of the program since we have hired Dorrell.
Most if the people here are SEC fans and know nothing about UCLA because we no longer get any air-time, ink or word of mouth.
We all ought to be embarrassed with a sub-standard program with such a great fan base, and being such a great sports college.
And for heavens sake hire a coach that can keep other teams offenses under 500 yards a game…………..
Wayne M. Cutler @ 3:45 pm:
Remember how quickly Guerrero got rid of Lavin and Toledo? How come he sits on his ass with Dorrell? Oh yeah, he likes Dorrell. I make a motion that if Guerrero doesn’t get rid of Dorrell after this season, we go after Guerrero. I don’t think that Danny Boy would want to lose his job because of Dorrell’s ineptness.
Robert @ 7:28 pm:
Sorry Steve, but Ken Norton? This is what got us in trouble in the first place. Assistant coach alum with no head coach experience. Don’t want to do that again. Than again, I do know an assistant pop warner coach looking for work.
October 31, 2007
dana @ 2:25 am:
Chow may be the greatest OC of all time, but that doesn’t necessairly translate into a great HC. Look at all the great co-ordinators who failed to make it as coaches- Dave Wandestat, Norv Turner, etc..
From what I’ve heard, there are concerns that Chow wouldn’t be a good recruiter. I admire what Chow has done, and he defintely deserves a shot at a HC job. But, he needs to work his way up. Be a HC at a mid-tier program, and prove all the doubters wrong. And, then move on to a top tier team like UCLA.
Pete @ 7:23 am:
Where are we at on the Billboard front. I really hope Bruin fans step up and pitch in to support this worthy cause. It’d be the ultimate expression of fan frustration and DG would have no choice but to get rid of Dullard once and for all.
DumpDorrell @ 7:46 am:
Pete … we are near $2,000. We came out strong and since have slowed down. We have until Nov 12. We put it out there because people wanted it. Lets see what happens after this Saturday … maybe we make another big push.
