“We’re #4!” Billboard

12x24 BillboardWe’ve done some checking around, and the costs for a “We’re #4!” billboard around the Westside, which is where we’d want it, are pretty high. We would have to get an average $10 from everyone who comes to our site in a day (on average), or about $11,000 (including artwork), to get a 12′ x 24′ billboard for a month in West LA (example left). We can try it … but we’d like to get some opinions on this. Many people have said it’s a great idea but there would have to be a LOT of people who get behind it to make it happen.

A month is the minimum rental period for the billboard industry. It would be a great length of time and we like the idea. Is it doable though, is the question. We could set up a donation button through paypal and keep a running tally so people could see it. We could put a timetable on it as well. If we hit the mark we do it. If we don’t hit the mark, we refund all the money back. But it wouldn’t look so hot if we top out at $400. If there are any large donors out there that want to talk about this contact us directly. Fire away with your thoughts …

Andy @ 3:34 pm:

Hey DD,

I think you are wasting your money. Not because your effort isn’t noble, but seriously, there is no way Karl is going to survive this, unless he wins the pac-10. If he does win the pac-10 then you have to admit, that is miraculous and amazing and he would deserve to stay.

But we know Karl, and we know he won’t win the pac-10, and we know he sucks it up the second half of the year. This team is out of sync and sinking. Guerrero will know what to do. I would keep up the great work that you are doing (though I sometimes disagree with the methods) but keep the cost down. Not that it wouldn’t help, but for $11,000 and given the current situation, a billboard wouldn’t be worth its cost.

DumpDorrell @ 4:15 pm:

Andy, you are wrong. It is not a sure thing that Dorrell is gone after this season even if he goes 7-5 or even 6-6. No one really knows what DG is thinking. But we at DD get inside info from different credible sources of 2 varieties, those that know football is not a priority with DG and UCLA, and those that know that DG is already looking for a successor. Both sides sound credible, but its the 2nd priority people that have us scared. We need to keep the pressure on so that THOSE people and THAT side of the debate are squashed. A billboard, along with the other things we are doing goes a long way towards negating that side of the debate. It’s an age old formula, make your anger known. That is what DD is all about … organizing the faithful. The billboard is a great way to do that. There are other ways as well.

Jim @ 4:38 pm:

Andy, Do you purchase tickets at these games? The cost for the Notre Dame tickets was $300 to my wallet. This isn’t a night at the movies with the kids. This is big time money to experience a football circus under the Duhrell regime. I go to a $300 dinner and it sucks, I’m complaining to someone and demanding my money back or I’m turning over some tables. We are turning over tables here. $11000 is exactly 36 people like myself that got served a crappy meal last weekend by this idiot and we aren’t taking it anymore.

kirk @ 4:44 pm:

I’m ready to hit the button for either a billboard or a fund to help buyout KD’s contract.

DumpDorrell @ 5:48 pm:

Thinking about this more … consider the visibility this will get in LA … especially near campus and with regard to the more affluent in LA. For an entire month. It would be an awesome show of strength.

DumpDorrell @ 8:55 pm:

We just got a pledge for $250! … again, we haven’t committed to this yet, but if we get a few of these types of commitments heck we might just green light it.

colonybruin @ 9:10 pm:

I will do dud-rell for $250

colonybruin @ 9:14 pm:

Who is a pilot _ lets fly over the rose bowl, pulling a message

DumpDorrell @ 9:45 pm:

well that takes us to $500 …

OutOThsWrld @ 11:16 pm:

Is this tax deductible? It really should be considering all the money Dorrell has stolen from us. I’m willing to throw down $100.

October 12, 2007

Trevor @ 7:25 am:

colony_bruin (or anyone else interested),

for a recent reference, Arkansas fans just organized a plane banner at a recent home game. Here is the thread that made that happen:

DumpDorrell @ 9:10 am:

That takes us to $600. Nestor at BruinsNation wanted us to post this at BruinsNation.com to gauge interest there. We’ll see how far this goes. And no its not tax deductible, but it should be.

Hector Miranda @ 9:58 am:

I’m in. I’ll pitch in a hundy.

My vote for picture would be the “Save Football - Dump Dorrell” slogan maybe combined with an edited “UCLA - Champions made near here.” logo.

Steve @ 12:03 pm:

My slogan is “Champions are made about 20 miles south.”

JM Bruin @ 1:14 pm:

How about this slogan -
“Karl Duh-rell Football, Destroying a Program One game at a Time.”

Doug of '89 @ 3:27 pm:

I’m having trouble with the “We’re #4″ bb. We want a public rebuke on KD, not on our athletes. I see “We’re #4″ bb as bad for athlete morale, bad for recruiting, bad for image of UCLA football, etc. We don’t want our athletes to feel responsible for this reign of mediocrity that we’ve all suffered through. We’ve got great athletes! Let’s show how supportive and classy UCLA fans can be even when we’ve got a lame leader? Why not take higher road? Don’t quote me, but something like, “Go UCLA Football!” with the DumpDorrell.com logo in the corner. While being supportive of the school and athletic program we LOVE, believe me, the message will be recieved that people are fed up with the KD reign. If we go the less snide and more positive route, I’m down for $400.

DumpDorrell @ 3:41 pm:

Doug … appreciate your point of view. It is shared by others. But we disagree with it. And the majority of comments we get in email, on here and on BN all say that we need to be strong in our words. It is a FACT(!) that we are #4. It the team has a problem with the truth than we have a bigger problem than just Dorrell. We think everyone knows this is about the coach and not the players, and certainly the players should know that. We are DumpDorrell … not UCLAplayerssuck.com. The losses we are enduring for so long have a bigger affect on player morale and recruits than anything we can do. What Florida fans did in Florida, flying a banner at games, etc., however ended up being very effective. Zook was gone after just his 2nd year. We are on year 5 with Dorrell. Its time to do something. The pain and damage of going through a change at head coach is short term and doesnt compare to the pain and damage of losing consistently. We are not going to achieve 100% consensus here, and that is not our goal. Reasonable people will differ. But we can’t be paralyzed by differing views either. We recognize that you have a valid point, but we are going to have to disagree, and see if we can still move forward.

Steve @ 3:47 pm:

Sorry Doug, but the players must bear the burden of the coach.
Sad, but true. When the players lose confidence in KD, that will be the knockout punch we need.

JSBFORUCLA @ 5:04 pm:

Add it in the Times, it would be cheaper, and more people would see it. It also could be much more detailed.

JohnBruin @ 10:35 am:

I oppose taking this public. A single billboard or ad won’t change anyone’s mind, plus it isn’t very classy to air dirty laundry in public. We may come across as spoiled whiners who can afford to complain on a billboard (how U$C). We don’t want to hurt our schools rep just to DumpDorrell.

Besides, the athletic department needs to hear many voices! How about inundating them with thousands of DumpDorrell.com postcards? We can use a variety of the proposed slogans and art work (and copyright is less a concern in postcards). The mail sorters will see the message and having to deal with *thousands* of them will show we’re not just a handful of wealthy whiners.

Also, we can continue sending postcards if Dorrell gets a lucky break this season.

DumpDorrell @ 10:53 am:

John … We hear you, and we disagree. Most avid fans want something. We cant get paralyzed by finding something everyone agrees with because there is no such thing. Unfortunately, the worst bit of bad rep is our consistent embarrassing losses and mediocrity. Also, our fans are booing AT the Rose Bowl DURING games. There is no nice way to fire someone, especially someone so visible and who is a “nice guy.” But it has to be done.

Your idea is interesting. But we need boldness now. Many schools have employed similar campaigns … Florida … and some people didn’t like it. But they were effective. Image is huge, and we want to push the image that Mediocrity is NOT ok. What is classless is putting that crap on the field and asking people to pay hundreds of dollars for it, asking great athletes to give up their futures for it, asking families of athletes to have their sons give up development and growth for it … etc. etc. At a $1 million per, we can do better. We are UCLA. This too shall pass, and hopefully, with a great coach this will all be forgotten.

Louis Miranda @ 12:46 pm:

Karl Dorrell is a nice man and I really wanted him to succeed.
five years later it is very obvious he cannot coach this team to excellence and ucla should always be a top ten team. Because he is african-american I wanted him to succeed even more.

John Bruin @ 2:47 pm:

I agree 100% that Dorrell must go. I just think that Bruin fans have a good reputation (better than fans of some schools) and we may sacrifice that reputation just to drive a point home - a point which may not need making (Dorrell may be gone already)

Doing a billboard or an ad in the paper will make us feel good but will it influence the powers that be? Would they do a 180 degree reverse from supporting Dorrell to firing him because of a Billboard? (Assuming they aren’t ready to give him his marching orders)

We don’t know what is going on behind closed doors so bringing this out into the streets may be an unwise move.

DumpDorrell @ 3:09 pm:

John … our athletic department’s funds come from football, for the most part. We choke their revenue source by taking our message to the UCLA public. That will get them to listen. Again, it worked for Florida and Notre Dame very well .. and of course, it’s worked through US history. Besides, its not just the billboard, it’s everything. Booing at the Rose Bowl and chanting Fire Dorrell at home games, two things that already are being done, are other ways to turn up the heat. Bringing this out in the public is the only way to make change happen. This happened with Lavin if you dont recall … there was the Lose Lavin campaign that was VERY public, although they didnt buy a billboard. No one remembers that now because we have a great program under a great coach. This site is a very public demonstration against the status quo. That is the entire point of this site. Your passive approach will affect no change. Sorry, you are preaching to the wrong choir.

JohnBruin @ 5:12 pm:

Fair enough. I’ll stick with my ‘passive’ letter writing campaign and wish y’all the best of luck with your billboard - we are after the same thing: UCLA Football to be contenders for the national championship.

Andy @ 10:28 pm:

I’m a season ticket holder.

October 18, 2007

dana @ 2:44 am:

I’m not a big fan of the “we’re #4″ billboard because most people won’t understand what that means. By the time you explain it, people will have driven by the billboard.

I like the idea of a billboard instead of something like sending letters or emails to the administration because the administration can easily just ignore or delete the latter. But, if we did it right, we could attract attention from the media and make it something that the administration could no longer ignore.

You want something credible, short enough to remember, and memorable.

Just off the top of my head, how about a satiric billboard in support of Dorrell from a pseudo-SC fan? You know something’s wrong when your arch rivals want you to keep your coach…

Diego @ 8:20 am:

As a former participant of the LoseLavin campaign, I fully endorse a billboard. JohnBruin, if you’re a season ticket holder and/or and alumunus of UCLA, then you’re keenly aware of the “speak no evil” approach the UCLA administration has had toward football. The truth is, the UCLA administration does not support football. Much of that has to do with the reality that the administration is filled with intellectuals, and not people that truly care for sports (by administration I refer to Chancellor, Dean, President et. al).

What we want to do is bring attention to an inept coach and a football program that has perpetually been ignored by its own administration. What better way to do that than by grabbing headlines. With the LoseLavin campaign, were the flashlight that illuminated former Athletic Director Pete Dalis’s bumbling decisions. What the guys at DumpDorrell are doing is BRILLIANT! WE MUST bring as much attention to our dire situation as possible. National attention is key, but having a local group of people applying constant pressure is the best approach. We need to DRAG the Administration out if its typical cocoon, and the best way to do that is to publicly embarrass them.

On a side note, I have to agree with Dana: A billboard with We’re #4 is pretty damn confusing. I like her idea about having an SC fan advocating for UCLA keeping Dorrell. To add to the ideas, maybe we can have a billboard of Dorrell wearing a crown that says, the King of Mediocrity! A picture of him with one of those stoic looks he always gives would be perfect.

If there are too many legal ramifications involved in using a picture (it could be libel), then here’s another idea:

A skyblue and gold sign that says…

MEDIOCRITY LIVES HERE!

UCLA football

Diego @ 8:29 am:

Just remember; A billboard is all about grabbing someone’s attention for one second! The entire message needs to be delievered on the board. We’re #4 is very confusing.

Now that I think about it, writing MEDIOCRITY LIVES HERE… ucla footbal

would definitely do the trick.

DumpDorrell @ 9:41 am:

Dana … we’re not going with “We’re #4!” on the billboard. We had a vote at BruinsNation and will go with something else, more like End UCLA Football’s Commitment to Mediocrity. There are a couple of other ideas. Your idea actually is pretty good. As for We’re #4, what’s confusing about it? It’s a mockery of one of the most iconic slogans in all of American culture. No one needs to know that we’re actually #4 in the Pac-10 to know that the slogan is a play on the We’re #1 slogan, mocking it. But your point is well taken, and you are not the only one to make it, as Diego’s comments prove.

Anyhow, we have not made a final decision on going with the billboard or what will be on it. So your idea should get some consideration when we do green light it, which may be after a bad Cal loss. Thanks for your input.
