Baghdad Karl & Other Stupidity

Some quotes postgame from Karl Dorrell and some of the players have us baffled.  Dorrell's quote goes beyond the usual cliche and unintelligible drivel, beyond the master of the obvious, and beyond the sunshine reports from camp or practices.  Now Karl is starting to sound like Baghdad Bob.  Brian Dohn reporting

"We're still in a pretty good position in Conference,'' UCLA coach Karl Dorrell said. "We have to evaluate where we are. We have issues at quarterback with Pat [Cowan]'s availability and how long Ben [Olson] is going to be out. Are we going to bring back Osaar Rasshan and the quarterback [Chris Forcier] we would like to redshirt?

Yep, pretty good position in Conference … haven't played any of the top teams, we have a QB problem, we can't score 7 points on Utah or Notre Dame, but we're in good position. Ok Baghdad Karl.  We have issues at quarterback … no kidding.

"Those are some of the things we have to consider going forward. We have to get our health back and get ready to play a great Cal football team. We're in pretty good shape in conference. We have to get past this loss and find out how to be better in our conference."

Dorrell's inability to communicate well or know what to say has already infected the players like a virulent virus.  Dohn on Brandon Breazell:

I asked WR Brandon Breazell if this was a devastating loss. "Nope,'' he said. Why? "Because we're only worried about the Pac-10.''

We wish Dorrell would have told everyone the players weren't interested in OOC games BEFORE fans wasted their money and time going to the game or to a local bar or even at home.  If the players don't care why should we?!  What is Karl Dorrell doing with this team??  They were talking national championship, best defense in the nation … now … this?!  And just in case getting beat by the nation's laughing stock of a team at your own house wasn't enough medicine, Shannon Tevaga had this to add (per Dohn):

Left guard Shannon Tevaga made no bones about why he was feeling so down after the loss to Notre Dame. "That team wasn't good'' Tevaga said. "You give them props after the game, but that's what hurts most."

Yes, he gave Notre Dame their due .. in a 2-fisted sort of way.  This is EXACTLY the attitude that helps lose games for us. The same attitude that had our defensive leader Bruce Davis taunting Notre Dame's OL saying earlier in the week that they "can't block a soul (Dohn)."  Nice. Charlie Weiss apparently brought that up in his press conference and said that the OL took Davis' comments personally, per Dohn:

"Number 44 (Davis) helped them out,’’ Weis said. "You don’t think they noticed when someone says you’re a pile of crap?"

Nice.  This team has no soul. This team lacks true leadership.  It all points to Dorrell.  If you watch the entire 5:40 postgame press conference you sill see that Dorrell just doesn't have it.  The press asks Dorrell only 3 questions, and you can tell not enthusiastically, because Dorrell says nothing of substance, just the same tired cliches. The press are tired of his answers.

And finally, a little bit of humor to round out the weekend.  The fun doesn't always come from our football team. Sometimes it comes from our opponents.   Here is a die-hard Notre Dame fan rallying the faithful to the familiar, inspiring and righteous cry:

Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Damn, they pull that one out every time.  Thank you for reminding us that at least we have a UCLA education.

Trojan Slayer @ 6:23 pm:

Very well said. I read his post game comments this morning and I could swear I was in a twilight zone episode.
It baffles the mind. KD is soooo fortunate that SUC lost was well taking the media spotlight off his ass.
And another thing, whats up with Ben “chinadoll” Olsen?
The guy is as fragile as a hymen!

Trojan Slayer @ 6:56 pm:

This just in from Karl Dorrell….
“If you let me stay as your head coach all your wildest dreams will come true.”
lol

Steve @ 7:07 pm:

OMG. This guy’s idea of the WCO is playing in Fantasyland. He has got to be nuts. More like a nightmare. I think he really believes it. I will be dead by the time he wins a national title. and reborn. I will got to SC next time.

DumpDorrell @ 7:12 pm:

Trojan Slayer … hi-larious. Here’s another Dorrell quote hot off the wire:

“Do not believe what those lying television tell you. We destroyed Notre Dame. The Notre Dame players … they cry on the field and they shoot themselves. It was record humiliation … we scored 100 points and they … they scored negative 5 points. Dont believe those lying television! UCLA won!”

Steve @ 7:32 pm:

I heard an hour ago that DG is talking to Tulane about letting Bob Toledo return to UCLA. True?

Nick @ 7:45 pm:

That Breazell comment was nothing. All he ment was that they were not going to dwell on this loss (horrible, by the way) and look forward. We are still undefeated in the Pac-10 and control our own destiny. The “top teams” like Oregon and SC cant say that. Besides the QB sitruation, we will use the bye week to get healthy. Markey, Everett, Dragovic, Whittington, and Tavega will get to 100% so we can pull off a huge upset. On offense, Bell and Markey need to have big plays, and Ossar can make things happen with his legs. Also, Breazell, the best kept secret in the conference, has to get the ball more, whether it be on reverses, screens, or KO returns. Keep the faith. The D has played two great games in a row, and they will have to carry us against Cal. Cant wait for this matchup: DeSean Jackson vs. Trey Brown. Should be great. GO BRUINS!!!

DumpDorrell @ 8:19 pm:

Nick … just want to point out that you are on DumpDorrell.com .. not that Romper Room site. Everyone here is a UCLA die hard fan. We want to win every game, including against hippy Cal. We still have no faith, zero, nada, in Karl Dorrell’s ability to get our players in a position to win. You’re sunshine chant of “keep the faith” comes with a heavy dose of Karl Dorrell kool-aid that we just don’t take here. You might want to go elsewhere with that cheerleading.

DumpDorrell @ 8:23 pm:

Note To Everyone. We are deleting or not approving any comments that raise the race card. It’s absolutely inappropriate and not germane to this debate. It has no place whatsoever. Karl Dorrell is being judged by his record and performance. All comments relating to race can be twisted by anyone and is harmful to the football program, UCLA, and our cause. We will delete or not approve all comments that mention race.

DR Class of '89 @ 8:45 pm:

I had written a letter to the SD to dump dorrell after the SLC Slaughter. Now, I’m going to send it. I know it’s been said here on DD.com before, but KD’s expression on the sidelines is a cross between “deer caught in the headlights” and “I don’t know the answer to this question, teach, don’t pick me!” Imagine what this drone says in the locker room! The reason UCLA has won the games it has so far has more to with the easy schedule, bend-don’t break defense and great athletes making individual plays than a well-oiled football program. Witness the O-penalties. Witness the ineptness in the red zone. Witness the inconsistency. The schedule is just getting going. This team won’t be bowel-bound, period, with KD. But he’s not getting canned mid-season, we all know that.

October 8, 2007

wmm @ 12:01 am:

Not sure if it was intentional, DR Class of ‘89, but this team certainly IS bowel bound. LOL Dorrell has flushed our future away.

I’m keeping the faith that Guerrero will wake up and give Dorrell a well-deserved boot. The coach of halftime’s pee-wee team could do a better job. Heck, he called an off-tackle play that resulted in about a 60-yard TD.

Steve @ 12:45 am:

DD. You are being disingenuous with the race thing. KD himself brought it in when he told the press that a black coach has to be “twice as good” as non black one to keep his job. He said it first.

SD Bruin Rita @ 1:55 am:

Let me just say first that: Football is color blind. I can say this I am sure along with every other true die hard UCLA fan that it doesn’t matter if KD is black, white, asian, mulatto, pink, red, gay, tranvestite, so long as he WINS and WINS WELL without this crappy, half assed effort and attitude that the team seems to have. Nobody cares what color he is. Nobody thinks that he has anything more to prove than any other coach that has been given 5 years to show his stuff. The only person who thinks that he has to prove that he is twice as good as a non-black coach to keep his job, is no surprise, KD himself. This makes me think that really he is using this as another means for another excuse when he gets canned from UCLA. “It wasn’t that I wasn’t an effective coach, it was that I was black and there were more expectations put on me because I was black”. That is what he will say. But the bottom line is this: Karl, we have the same expectations from you as we do for anybody else that coaches UCLA football - WIN, stop the excuses, improve week after week don’t regress, and change what you are doing wrong!! If beating an 0-5 ND team is what KD considers putting on him “more expectations” than the average coach then he is on crack and crazy as hell and is living indeed in the TWILIGHT ZONE and we need him outta here even quicker than it takes “fragile” BO to get injured!

Anybody wonder why it is that all of our QB’s appear to be so injury prone and weak?? They can’t handle a few sacks and they go down with injuries. Has KD ever thought that maybe part of their weekly practices should involve teaching the QB’s the proper method for going down with the football, in case, (god forbid because this never happens says KD), our QB gets sacked because he has no protection?? Or maybe teaching the QB that throwing the ball away or running off the field might be a better choice if he has no open receivers than to take a sack, lose field position and yards, and risk getting injured?? Not to mention the fact that with a sack comes the possibility of a QB fumble and/or the QB throwing the ball without stability to a receiver who is most likely double or triple covered and the ball might end up getting intercepted instead?? Oh, wait, how about getting our third string QB ready for game play since our second string is injured and our first string is one little snap away from being injured AGAIN. Gee, those don’t seem like likely scenarios says KD. Oh okay, So THAT’S why they don’t practice those things with the QB. Okay, I understand now. Your right KD, expecting you to know these things is asking too much of you because non-black coaches are never expected to be able to beat 0-5 teams with the worst record of sacks and rush defense in the country. Oh wait, that brings me to another point. What about having your walk-on QB who has never thrown a pass in a college game before hand the ball off to his rushers instead of throwing it more than one of our starting QB’s throws the ball?? I mean 28 passes in 3 quarters for a guy who can’t throw for shiat and ends up with 4 interceptions on the night!! That’s smart. Have MBT throw the ball instead of run the ball against a team that can’t protect the run. Great idea! Way to build our only non-injured QB’s confidence: Let the entire nation watch on ABC as he humiliates himself and our team with a worse than Utah style loss that his parents and friends are sure to be watching at home. Boy, he really wants to show his face now for the next game. If I was him, I would break my own arm right now to keep myself out of that game. I mean you can’t put someone new like him in a game like that without being prepared in practice AND having an O-line that helps you out. Our O-line SUCKS ASS and poor MBT was doomed from the second they put him in that game. Oh wait, but they had Rashaan they could have put in as QB who was just sittin’ on the dock of the bench, watching the tide flow away who actually came into UCLA with a QB scholarship who is probably much better than MBT………….oh wait, we are talking about football, that’s right. I forgot. I think KD forgot too. Someone should remind him that we aren’t a Div 2 school because we sure look that way. At this point SDSU could beat us, heck, a good high school football team could beat us, no, wait. We can beat a good high school football team, right? Okay I know, I am being generous………..I am just trying to “Keep the Faith” like good ‘ol kool-aid drinking Nick is doing. Hey, at least we weren’t ranked #2 in the country and then lose to Stanford, right? So okay let me get this straight: We cream Stanford, Stanford beats USC, but we lose to 0-5 ND? Is that right? Is there a method to this madness? Nope. Why you ask? Because it is KD football, KD style.

SD Bruin Rita @ 2:26 am:

Let me also add that as I am aware that only 18% of the nation was watching this game - that is still 18% more than I would have liked watching this embarrassment of a slaughter over what looked like nothing more than an average high school football team. The halftime bruins had more play than we had and they were only 6 years old and 3 feet tall!!

Oh, and the thing that irritates me the most about this loss is the players and coaches attitudes after the game about the loss. “We are only worried about the Pac-10″. What a bunch of bullshit if I ever heard any! So we went from National Title contenders to who cares about everyone except for the remaining games against the top teams in the nation?? So the games against crappy teams like Utah and ND don’t count because losing to them will “inspire” us to dominate Cal, ASU, Oregon and USC?? Riiiiiiiight. Just like Karl said, “We are in good position” for these remaining games. Only the best teams in the nation left to play and your right Karl, nothing to worry about. It doesn’t mean anything that we couldn’t beat an 0-5 ND team or Utah. It doesn’t mean anything that the only reason why we beat OSU is because they fumbled the ball away 4 times in the last 5 minutes. We didn’t EARN any of the points we scored against OSU - they gave us those points with their own mistakes. But hey, that was a great game, wasn’t it Karl? We could only score on OSU in the last 5 minutes of the game, and only because they fumbled it away to us 4 times, but we are in good position aren’t we to play our remaining schedule against mostly all highly ranked teams. What CRACK is he smoking?? Does he even believe the crap coming out of his mouth right now?? How does he sleep at night?? How does he wake up in the morning?? What planet is he living on?? We have played bad football all season with the exception of the Stanford game who just beat a team that will probably blow us away at the end of this season. Go figure. I just can not believe the attitudes that the coaches and players have! I totally agree with DumpDorrell that why should we care about watching or going to the games if they don’t care about playing to win them or even care enough to show up to play?? What a waste of all of our time and money. I spent a lot of money driving up to Pasadena from San Diego, staying in a hotel, gas money, food money. I wasted a lot of my time and money to go to this pathetic joke of a game to watch this pathetic joke of a team and coaches play some amazingly pathetic football!! As a season ticket holder I told my husband going to the UCLA games is not fun anymore. I told him I don’t want to go to the games for the rest of the season just to watch us play some half assed football. I told him it isn’t worth it. I would rather watch it on TV and then turn it off when it starts to get nasty. Why spend hundreds of dollars to go to the game when the players don’t care enough to make it at least semi-enjoyable for any of the fans? I mean it looked like they didn’t even try!! I mean it is not like I live in LA and the Rose Bowl is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from me. It is a huge hassle going to the games, it costs a lot of money, I am always super excited to go, and then half way through the game I get disappointed. I always stay till the end but this time the hilite of the game was watching the USC-Stanford game in the pressbox. I didn’t even care about the UCLA game by that point. I was just happy that USC lost. How sad is it when now the only thing keeping me happy is knowing and hoping that USC can continue to lose so that they have no chance of playing for the national title game or a BCS bowl hopefully. I figure, hey, if UCLA is gonna lose at least USC can be losing too.

DumpDorrell @ 6:33 am:

Steve … we dont care if Dorrell brought it up, we arent going to have that on our site.

Trojan Slayer @ 7:00 am:

Bruin Rita,
If half the Bruin Nation were as passionate as you are about this team, I assure you KD would be applying at the local Walmart as we speak. Just forget about the entrance greeters position Karl, you need some type of personality for that gig!

Steve @ 7:37 am:

DD: You are right. At this point we should just focus on getting rid of him because of his failure as a HC. That is enough.

Tommy Bruin @ 7:42 am:

Why can’t DUH-rell get as fired up about the team as Rita is?

whp '68 @ 8:06 am:

“..This team won’t be bowel-bound, period, with KD. But he’s not getting canned mid-season, we all know that.

Au contraire, the team is already bowel-bound; it’s definitely bowl bound.

Scott @ 8:26 am:

How sad is is that I now hope we lose the rest of the games in the hope that it somehow gets duh-rell fired…..

Buycker @ 8:42 am:

I’m sure most of us think KD is a decent, God-fearing guy, but he is very similar to Glen Mason, the ex-coach of the Minnesota Gophers: beat some great opponents and then lose to the bad ones. No consistency. Their fans got fed up too, had a website similar to this one. The kicker was when he gave up the largest lead in college bowl history and lost to Texas Tech. He was fired the same day. But then they went and hired a tight ends coach from the Denver Broncos and they aren’t winning squat. We need to be sure DG doesn’t make the same mistake. And please don’t bring up Bob Toledo. Entertaining BUT..been there, done that. What really are the chances of getting Neuheisel??

Bruin Physicist @ 9:56 am:

‘Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?’

That’s a quote (more or less) from Animal House. It may not have as much literary merit as Jane Eyre, but that movie’s still an important part of a college education.

“Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.”

DumpDorrell @ 10:18 am:

Bruin Physicist … that makes sense. Thanks for the heads up.

Scott @ 10:35 am:

It’s possible that the school would shy away from Neuheisal due to the bagage that he brings with him…

JM Bruin @ 10:48 am:

Is there any way they can strike every game from the record that Duh-rell has coached. Maybe the books can be modified to say that UCLA didn’t participate in Fooball for the last 5 years. They can report it as it is, a HOSTAGE SITUATION. Karl Duh-rell held UCLA HOSTAGE, like Castro in Cuba and we’ll just wipe it from memory, just like what Lavin did to basketball. I still firmly will acknowledge those years, as even exsiting per his stupidity. You have to take the same stance against Duh-rell. F-him and that game.

Thanks to ND FOR being a little less Shitty than Karl Duh-rells Football team. Go Cal then Wazzu!

Can someone please go over where the team walks in and VERBALLY BLAST DUH-RELL AND LET HIM KNOW HOW WE FEEL!

David @ 12:15 pm:

I’ve come late to the Dump Dorrell frenzy, but I’m now firmly in that camp. I kept thinking that he’d pull it together, get tough, show some enthusiasm, inspire his team, demonstrate consistency, cut down on penalties. While he’s shown glimpses here and there, the only time he sounds authoritative is when he’s defending the team’s poor or lacklustre performance. Well, that ain’t cutting it, Karl! Avenging last year’s loss to Notre Dame (and I was there) was huge. To excuse Saturday’s loss by saying that UCLA is positioned well for the remainder of its PAC-10 games is just a pipe dream.

While we’re dumping Dorrell, I’m not seeing much from Norvell, the offensive coach, either. As for replacements (please, God!) Toledo is a bad idea; Neuheisel, who has some serious integrity issues, is a worse one. Guerrero needs to find a great, proven college coach who would welcome the chance to make one of the great academic and athletic institutions in the country a true football powerhouse.

I’ll still watch the Bruins as they finish out an embarrassing season, because I’m a diehard fan, but I’m REALLY looking forward to basketball.

Steve 2 @ 12:37 pm:

Nick must be on crack!
It does not matter if you get all those guys back, UCLA has no play calling ability and no heart.

Editor: The name of poster has been changed because there are too many Steve’s posting here.

Joe @ 12:54 pm:

Lets face it guys, karl cant recruit and what ever good he has, he cant coach. When are the bruins going to get a real QB? USC is deep at every position. Why cant the bruins get some good recruits? It must be karl duh. Cmon guerrero, do your job.

mikey @ 1:07 pm:

Just a note to those out there that think calling for Dorrell’s ouster is coming from a bunch of know nothing football fans just looking for a goat. Judging by these e-mails I’m inclined to think you are all pretty damn knowledgable and are right on the mark. Take it from a retired football coach. It’s pretty obvious where the problem is at UCLA.

BLUE BOB @ 1:38 pm:

SEPERATED AT BIRTH………
KD AND ART SHELL.

DAN G., PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING.

Chuck B @ 2:49 pm:

None of this would be happening if Karl Dorrell was still alive. Also, Ben Olson is a loser. Instead of cheering on his teammates after Saturday’s injury he was sulking at the end of the bench and in the locker room. I expect more from a team leader.

Chuck B @ 3:15 pm:

And another thing. For too long I have heard the Bruins won’t pay enough to get a good coach. With the way things are at USC, I would have brought in Steve Spurrier when he was available. Under Pete Carroll the Trojans have increased their home attendance by more than 20,000 per game. The attendance increase more than covers his salary. If the Bruins don’t want to compete, quit playing football.

Hector Miranda @ 5:25 pm:

Great call Chuck B.
I have no idea what our attendance numbers look like, but I consistently sold out Rose Bowl would have to be a serious income generator.

Buycker @ 6:01 pm:

Neuheisel has been vindicated. And he’s a Bruin. Besides, What majorly great coaches are out there anyway? Frank Solich perhaps, or how about Jimmy Johnson? Mike Price? They all have some baggage. (DO NOT even mention Glen Mason.) UCLA won’t pay the mega-bucks to lure away some mega-star. So Rick is The Man, and he’s young enough to last a while. And DG can probably get him at a bargain price. I rest my case.

TommyBruin @ 8:28 pm:

DUH-rell is an idiot. Losing to Utah, ND, what kind of position is the team really in going into conference play? Demoralized, injured, expecting to lose. Yea, they’re in great shape.

I love UCLA football, I’ve been taking my son to games since he was a toddler, now he’s in high school playing safety. DUH-rell destroying the team and even worse, not giving a damn, feels like he is taking away something that my son and I had together. I can’t really root for a team that’s led by an incompetent clown. Looking at the Bruin bears that play the fight song we used to take to games makes me sad now.

Steve @ 8:56 pm:

Rick Neu won in court. He did nothing. We had an ASSistant who had 2 felonies. So what about RN?

colonybruin @ 10:02 pm:

is anybody a pilot _ how about flying over the rose bowl with a big DUMP DUD-RELL sign

Dave @ 11:54 pm:

As a hippy Cal fan who appreciates competition within our conference, I would strongly agree with the folks that support Neuheisel on this site. You Bruins would be fools not to hire a WINNER like Neuheisel, who has a national title on his resume and probably would have had another had he not been undone by events that had nothing to do with his on-field performances. And especially because he is remembered so fondly as a Bruin player for his heart and courage under fire, he would turn UCLA around just like Tedford turned Cal around. When I was a student at Cal I suffered through all five ghastly years with Tom Holmoe, when we were the Stanfurd of the Pac-10. The moral of the story is that I appreciate winners like Tedford. And Neuheisel belongs in that elite category of coaches. Neuheisel has turned around every sad program he’s been involved with. He is an absolute steal for you guys, and still young to boot. Desperate to be given another chance by a major program… What a great Hollywood story — Neuheisel returns to Los Angeles after years of wandering in the desert and re-establishes the UCLA dynasty Pete Carroll-style. Like anyone really cares about Neuheisel’s “character” issues… stop being so pious Bruin fans! What he was accused of (and acquitted from) was pretty tame anyway. Remember, Jim Harrick certainly had some character issues, but nobody cared when he was winning the national title! Neuheisel would steal the spotlight from Carroll and be a celebrity in Westwood. Bruin fans, step off your high horses and hire a guaranteed winner while you still can WHO WANTS TO BE HERE… and make things interesting in SoCal again.

October 9, 2007

Buycker @ 8:47 am:

Well said, Dave! At least there’s two of us who can see the light.

UCLAN @ 11:13 am:

Dave, what national title was that? Do you mean when Bill McCartney was the coach of Colorado, and Neuheisel was an assistant? I thought that the folks in Colorado were actually glad to see Neuheisel leave, after a 6-5 season.

Neuheisel is a pretty good coach, but hardly a great one. His defenses are never very good. He would undoubtedly upgrade the program here, but who wouldn’t? I’d much rather have Chris Peterson, who showed me a lot by winning a BCS Bowl game against Stoops, and who actually appears to be able to coach defense at a school which never played any.

Jim @ 11:35 am:

I cannot even imagine how ugly it will be against Cal. Boo and boo often.

Chuck B @ 11:41 am:

Hiring Neuheisel would be a huge mistake. Wasn’t Dorrell’s predecessor fired for character issues and losing control of the team? Neuheisel (an attorney) is a master of breaking the spirit of the law while not actually breaking the law. Also, he hasn’t demonstrated the ability to behave himself or win games on a consistent basis.

Steve @ 12:27 pm:

Neu had several lousy seasons at Wash. too. 7 wins and 8 wins

October 10, 2007

Buycker @ 10:13 am:

UCLAN, do you mean Chris Peterson the actor, or Chris Peterson the coach?
Either one would be better than KD.
And Jim, Cal’s not invincible. This just might be one of the big upsets of KD’s inconsistent coaching career.
Wins another big one and saves his bacon. Isn’t that the story of Karl Dorrell?
