The Karl Dorrell Press Conference Game

UCLA Bruins football coach Karl DorrellBy now we've all read or heard a Karl Dorrell press conference or two.  We thought we'd play a game with them … the Karl Dorrell Press Conference game. Yeah, not very original sounding, but it's a riot.  It involves alcohol, because you'll need it, so you must be 21 or over to play.

Here's how it works.  We give you a quote from a Karl Dorrell presser, and you guess after which game he made that quote.  If you guess wrong, you drink. If you guess right .. you drink … because in the end does it really matter?  Karl is still our coach.

Let's start with this first quote:

"We still have to worry about us." he said. "I believe our team needs to continue to focus on how we can get better week in and week out, with the details and discipline, on improving what we need to improve. There’s still a lot for us to work on. We’re really going to be hard on the details and the discipline on how to operate and execute."

wait … what??!  Yes it's unintelligible, but when he made the quote is too obvious. Everyone drink.  We're going to make it harder now. Next quote:

"There’s a lot of work for us to be done for this team. Penalties will be addressed any which way, shape and form we can. We have to really utilize our resources in practice; we’re going to have to discipline those resources as well just to make sure we’re getting our points across."

huh?! Discipline those resources??!? Still unintelligible, but you are figuring out when he said this aren't you? You're tough … or we're making it too easy.  Anyway, everyone drink.  This one will definitely fool a few of you:

"It’s about execution, it’s about doing things that should be done in a certain way. This team has some qualities that are starting to reveal themselves right now and it’s encouraging to see that. And there’s a lot that can be brought from it. We’ve just got to continue to harp on those details and bring more and more out of it each week."

Alright .. you get the picture.  Any of these quotes could have been made at any point in the season or basically any season because Karl Dorrell says the same things every week - always devoid of meaning and mostly devoid of logic or basic grammar.  By the time we're through putting half of what Dorrell says in a presser you'd already be 3 times over the blood alcohol limit.

Coaches often repeat themselves when the same questions get thrown at them from the press, sure. But Karl Dorrell isn't trying to answer the same questions … he's trying to fool everyone into thinking he actually knows what's going on, formulating sentences by stringing together as many words as possible with long syllables so that he fills the air with something.  It didn't work last week when reporters asked him basic questions about the opposing defense, and Karl snapped back with his famous Football 101 quote.  But that still didn't stop Karl.  The quotes above were from YESTERDAY.  Yep … that's our football coach.

UCLAN @ 11:41 am:

You hit the nail on the head when you said that Dorrell is essentially just saying a lot of words that he thinks make him sound intelligent. He apparently has no capacity to actually talk about specifics like formations, playcalling or strategy. It would really be quite pathetic, except that he apparently gets away with it, as no one in the mainstream press has ever commented on it. What Dorrell usually means to say is that the team needs to improve (that’s a constant), but he wants to sound managerial, so he says all these nonsense things which he doesn’t realize actually make him sound illiterate.
