Postgame Bizarre: UCLA 40 Oregon State 14
What a bizarre game. One look at the score and you'd think we dominated. And yet, if feels like Dorrell dodged one. We were down 14-12 in the 4th quarter, then a series of huge mistakes by OSU, mostly from two players, gave us amazing field position and easy scores. In fact, we had great field position nearly the entire game. We said earlier this week that the Stat of the Week would be turnovers … and it turned out that turnovers in our favor really decided the game. 3 straight fumbles, 2 lost, on kick-off returns by the same player … not sure that's ever happened before. A punter who can't punt 25 yards, and because he takes forever to get the kick off had one blocked, is basically a turnover every time he touches the ball. Those 3 turnovers, the 2 kick off fumbles and the blocked punt, led to 3 of our 4 scores in the less than 8 minutes in that final quarter.
Our defense did come through in the the last 3 quarters, finally. For the first time this year, Walker can hold his head up for the effort. Still, this was a pro offense he beat, something he is used to doing. He still can't beat a spread offense. Next week we get one of the worst offenses in the country, so that is a gimme for our defense and for Dorrell. Our offense today was average at best, gaining less than 350 yards against a tired and demoralized defense who had to deal with turnovers and poor field position all day. Ben Olson started to look comfortable there at the end, which is a good sign. But the playcalling is still mediocre at best. Often it was just plain bad. Were it not for all the turnovers we'd be getting on Training Jay's case more here.
For now, the team is still in the conference lead and at 4-1 might get voted back into the top 25. No games to really be proud of, and one game that will sour for a while, but 4 wins nonetheless. And the Dorrellistas are out in the open again. "Why can't you be happy?!" "You Dump Dorrell guys are idiots." Well, let's see how happy we are when we finally play real teams. It's September. Next up, 0-5 Notre Dame at home.

UCLA looked great in the last eight minutes on Saturday. Pat Cowan would have scored 60 points yesterday. HE is the better of the two QBs, and he plays with confidence and elevated energy. Our running game is looking great. I wonder what Bob Toledo would have done with this team. If he had won the Miami game in 1988, UCLA would have won a national championship and finally ended all the Donahue myths. We would now be the power team in LA, in stead of the Condoms.
UCLA can beat USC. We all saw a sorry performance last nite in Seattle, that was one dropped pass in the Husky end zone away from another upset on Upset Saturday. LSU will be NO. 1 on Monday. If UCLA beats Cal and USC, we could be playing LSU for the National Championship, and then what Dump Dorrell? Will Dorrell invite Bob Toledo to stand on the sideline with him?
Go Bruins!!!!!!!!!!!!
DumpDorrell @ 7:11 am:
Pat … the only reason why we printed your comment is to show all how far Dorrell cultists like you will go to support Dorrell, even if you don’t make supporting Dorrell explicit in your post.
For 3 quarters we looked like the team that lost to a horrible JV Utah squad and the team that almost lost to BYU. And because of 1 quarter, a quarter in which we saw a team implode with 3 inexplicable turnovers that lead to 3 easy scores for us, you are ready to put UCLA in the national championship game??!! You are ready to have us beat both Cal and SuC, and assume out of hand that the Oregon and ASU games are wins??!! Someone’s spiked the kool-aid.
Hey, it’s cool to want to beat everyone. We want that too. But people like you told us the same things last year when we were 4-1 and then we went on a 4 game losing streak … to Oregon, Cal, Wazzu … teams we have yet to play this year. We told you last year you were nuts and we are telling you again this year … you are nuts. We will beat an 0-5 Notre Dame team next week and dreams of a national championship will become more real to people like you. Wait until we actually play a decent team before you talk smack.
Now, it is well known to readers of DD that we went on ESPN Radio and Fox Sports Radio LAST YEAR and said that if Dorrell won the conference this year we would shut DumpDorrell.com down. We said it again this year on ESPN Radio. What about you?!! If Dorrell loses the conference will you finally join us in wanting excellence for UCLA football … finally … and in wanting Dorrell replaced by a real coach?? Not likely. You are the problem Pat. Your kind will always be the problem. When Dorrell is finally gone, you will disappear too, just like all the Lavin cultists … none of whom admit now to being part of the problem for those long torturous 7 years.
Pat … we are being generous by posting your comments on our site. Do not expect the same generosity if you come back with some of the dogmatic tripe you post on other sites. 5 years is enough time for a football coach, A FOOTBALL COACH, getting paid $1 Million per year to be a success. Do not waste our server space arguing otherwise. And by success we mean success measured according to what Dan Guerrero and Karl Dorrell himself said they expected of Karl to achieve as coach when he was hired: Win Pac-10 Championships, Compete in BCS Bowl Games, and Beat SuC (1-3). Again, do not waste our server space arguing otherwise.
But please feel free to come back and add your comments otherwise … we admire your commitment to mediocrity … that is what this site is about.

if there is a way for a team to escape with a 24 point victory, then we just witnessed it. that was one of the weirdest games i have seen in awhile. . .
that being said, this is a huge victory for Olsen. the bruins have sucked on the road under Dorrell, and this is really Olsen’s first win where he suffered any type of adversity. i think a lot of the grumbling for P Cowan to start in place of Olsen stems more from the fact that Cowan won two of these type games (wash last week and of course the terrific USC game) than the two QB’s actual performances. Cowan has stunk it up in just as many games as Olsen (FSU, the 4 game losing streak last year) but he earned a cache of goodwill for his two gritty victories. Olsen now has one to his credit, and with the “gimmee” against Notre Dame coming up, he is in a good position to get another quality win against CAL at the Rose Bowl . . .
of course, as Petros Papadkis suggested in the fox telecast, this team’s offense smacks of the delightful USC teams under the great Paul Hackett (best Trojan coach EVER). Carson Paler looked mediocre for 3 seasons under Hackett, and one lesson from those teams should be written on a stone tablet and thrown off a mountain top at Dorrell’s head. Has anybody at UCLA ever heard of the K.I.S.S. rule???? (Keep It Simple Stupid)

. . . and to Pat M:
Olsen might have led this team to 60 points yesterday if the O line would have sown up for the 1st quarter or if Dorrell had this team prepared for crowd noise and gave them some composure (i can’t remember the last time I saw any team have back to back penalties more than once in a game). A lot of scoring opportunities were missed that didn’t have anything to do with Olsen. As far as I’m concerned those two would be in a dead heat, but Olsen has the inside track now because of Cowan’s injury. . .
DumpDorrell @ 9:06 am:
Jake … nicely put! Escape with a 24 point victory … yep, that about says it all right there. We are probably going to use that.
Steve @ 9:07 am:
UCLA did not make a first down until the middle of the 2nd quarter!!?? Please. FIRST DOWN. Then only could get 2 FG in red zone with the #1 HS pick.?? How about passing to TE in endzone? Madden loves that. The #1 problem, other than KD being still unqualified after 5 YEARS, is his choice to use the West Coast offense at the collegiate level. Doesn’t work with an inexperienced QB and others, and takes too long to learn. Paul Hack-ett had the same problem at SuC, and he had Carson Palmer. Chow then made him look like John Elway. False starts, 6 men on line, and delays of game are typical of this. Why do these morons want this guy still? Jeez. There are so many good guys in the wings. Cal will win. UO will win, and SuC will def. win at home. Haven’t lost there in a long time. I predicted (still do) that UCLAme will end up in the middle of the PAC, go to a #2 bowl, and lose there to a Wyoming type team. Very clear.

It’s all about consistency. Each game, each season builds on the one before. Most of us probably wouldn’t be haunting this site if Karl Dorrell had shown even an inkling of an ability to achieve consistency and an upward arc for the UCLA program.
Instead, all Bruins fans get are platitudes from Dorrell about how we ARE improving, growing, developing, learning. But the words belie the results on the field and what we can see with our own eyes. The record speaks for itself, and it’s one of mediocrity.
The first three quarters of the OSU game were emblematic of Dorrell’s tenure. We looked unprepared, unfocused, clearly frustrated and woefully ineffective, against a largely one-dimensional team. All the talent in the world on the field but a coaching staff with no grasp of how best to use it. Finally, in the fourth quarter the players put it all together and stepped up — taking advantage of the Beavers’ generosity as much as anything. But good for them; they deserved it.
I would love nothing more than to have yesterday’s fourth quarter be the turning point for the season, the program and for Karl Dorrell, and especially for this senior-laden team. Forgive me if I’m skeptical and more than a bit cynical after observing countless turning points these last few years. As I said, it’s all about consistency.
