Sunshine Reports
In case you were looking for a reality check on our football program, don't go looking for much in the MSM. Now that Dorrell had his "gut-check," "character," "bell-answering" rebound win against Washington, much of what is being written this week is Sunshine Reports. Today's example via Brian Dohn:
UCLA responded with a very good Tuesday practice with high energy.
"I like our focus right now,'' UCLA coach Karl Dorrell said. "Everybody's chirping on each other to improve. …I was really encouraged with how hard everyone was working." QB Ben Olson looked good, throwing quickly and accurately.
Frankly, is this report necessary or warranted (without criticism)?? Yeah, yeah, "what do you expect Karl to say?" "Improve, learn, grow, step it up, take it to the next level" would all sound good if it actually happened during Dorrell's tenure. It gets tiring reading these Sunshine Reports week in week out while we put up losing efforts against BYU and Utah. Seems like all we do is go through the roller coaster ride of a Dorrellian year where one week everything is good and the next we have to "turn the corner, step it up, learn, grow, take it to the next level." Why can't it be "watch some tape, game plan and prepare for our next opponent, fix some things here and there, or work on some things here and there, introduce some things for the next game, etc. etc." There is a huge difference. One mindset is based on having excuses for the past, the other mindset is based on a constant search for excellence. But that concept is lost on Dorrell, and it appears, on our beat press (not to single anyone out).
