Winning Ugly: UCLA 27 - BYU 17
Why does this feel familiar??!!
This was closer than the final score looks - we looked awful in the second half - for an uninspiring typically mediocre Dorrell win. BYU, were it not for a bad fumble call against them down in the red zone, and a series of bad penalties (11 in total!), could have gone ahead late in the game. And with this coaching staff … does anyone really have confidence that we would have come back and won it? This an ugly win plain and simple. We got lucky. We came out like gangbusters as we expected against a young and inexperienced offense. But we never got anything going in the second half. Nearly 400 yards passing given up to the inexperienced BYU offense now solidifies the fact that our secondary and our defense in general has problems. We have not "grown" or gotten better in that regard at all, even with all our returning starters and seniors. It's a shame too, we should have and could have dominated this game. Instead, we have given every future opponent ammunition to attack us effectively. For all those Dorrellistas out there happy with beating the spread, we have a problem!!!
BYU had 23 first downs to our 16. They had over 400 yards offense (436 yahoo sports) to our measly 235 (only 126 in the air against last years #65 passing defense in the nation, and barely 100 yards on the ground). Training Jay has earned his nickname today. Today was the wake up call, if there is going to be one this season. We were at home!!! How does this happen?? We will tell you how … COACHING. The 3+ in the turnover margin is what saved us. That is exactly the number we predicted … which doesn't make us geniuses because it was obvious that a veteran defense was going to take the ball away from an inexperienced offense, including a first year starting sophomore QB:
We think there will be as high as a +3 turnover margin potential for us.
This game was a disaster really for our offense, which really lost this game. Without the 7 points on the pick 6 from Trey Brown, we win by a field goal … but we all know that wouldn't have been the final outcome because without that the final touchdown we would have been down by 4 at the end of the game. Had we needed to score a TD to win the game. Does anyone really think that Dorrell, or Training Jay, would have called the game properly??? Not likely. Their sphincters would have tightened more than the most wives' during a divorce. Did you see how Dorrell had that constipate look on his face almost from the start of the game?
This does not bode well for us when we play better teams. Troubling signs abound. Stanford was a patsy and BYU was in rebuilding mode so there is no comfort in our wins (despite the NUMEROUS times Versus pointed out that BYU owned for a moment the nation's longest winning streak). When we play real Pac-10 teams our coaching staff will be truly tested. It's not looking good, we will say that. We will come back tomorrow with our Plays of the Year candidates and Guerrero Grades for the game. More later ….

Disappointing performance !! They have Seniors , but are not getting better as a team. It all comes down to the QB (Olson) and the play calling. I don’t think he is mobile enough. I would take my chances with Pat Cowan when he is healthy any day. He would fare better out of the shotgun. Why did they run a play to the shorter side of the field that was so obvious and therefore stuffed rightaway ??. They can be so predictable .It drives me Crazy to see them stagnant and not developing the offense !!

I don’t think you’re giving BYU enuf credit. They will probably win their conference and the bruin blue jumped out to a 20 point lead. It did take a gutty performance by Davis, but he said they put 3 guys on him and it didn’t stop ‘em. I think your giving up way too soon on “touchdown or Southpaw Jesus”, (although I personally don’t like the moniker). BYU is a smart group with many elders, i.e. Olson. He’s got great touch…savy will come with a few more wins. Win is a win. We’re not talking Heismen, yet. But progress will come. it’s still 2-0, right!

Disclaimer - I don’t have time for spell check.
Ok Duh-rell is 2-0, but the problem is, Stanford is horrible, and the offense is predictable again. If any of you noticed… Big Ben is slow! I was a big proponent of putting him in over the DO 3 years ago, but when you look at him play his release looks slow and deliberate. It looks like he’s throwing an anvil to his receivers. I hope it’s just rust, but the play calling is unimaginative and and that’s Duh-rell’s fault! Anyone who watches football, or any other sport for that matter of fact, knows when you have an opponent down you go for the neck and choke them out. When you have a 20 point lead you need to extend it to 30 and finish the game… Duh-rell hasn’t learned this over the 4 plus misrable years he’s been here. That’s one of many problems he has, and he has no clue… kinda like a Greasy Scumbag who used to coach basketball for us, NO IDEA OF HOW TO RUN AN OFFENSE. NO IDEA HOW TO PUT TOGETHER A COMPLETE TEAM, just gives you flashes every now and again to keep his job.
FIRE DUH-RELL…..FIRE DUH-RELL…..!!!

McNown was slow and had bad wheels. Bruin Blue was one bad day away from the national title game. ( really couldn’t Bob T. have scheduled it the following season?)
You can’t lay that play calling on Duh-rell, he’s Training Jay in the booth now. it comes down to execution and it seems that the only who gets it is Bruce Davis.
btw, Lavin….more sweet 16s than the Wiz!
JM Bruin @ 5:11 pm:
I gonna post this garbage on every bruin board out there, and you’ll be blackballed along with “The Greasy One”
“btw, Lavin….more sweet 16s than the Wiz!”
You just discredited everything you’ll ever say!!
Sweet 16 banners belong in the gym of Middle Nowhere State… not UCLA. Just like your head coach Karl Duh-rell!
There’s a difference between being a program, and being a paper thin 9-4, it’s a fine line you don’t seem to get it.
BTW - Who hired Training Jay?

Here’s next year’s marketing slogan:
“Bruin Football: Better than Stanford . . . for now.”
JM Bruin @ 9:43 am:
Get the bus started and get the word out to all of Bruin Nation, FIRE DUH-RELL! Just like Lavin did to basketball his BROTHER DUH-RELL is doing to Football. For anyone who doesn’t have their T-shirt, get them, and get the campaign in full stride cause anyone who isn’t embarrased, and disgusted by what happened on Saturday must either be a Trojan, or a sick bastard!! Karl Duh-rell proved once again that we are nothing in football and like the season he won ten games his team was a joke. Hey DUH-RELL MAYBE AL DAVIS WILL HAVE A JOB FOR YOU NEXT YEAR BUT GET THE HELL OUT OF WESTWOOD! DON’T EVER COME BACK EVER!!!!!
