Monday Morning Labor Day Roundup
It's Labor Day .. everyone have a good and safe one. Today we will have a speed post, and get to BYU tomorrow:
- Ben Olson National Player of the Week? Ben Olson has been named one of 4 candidates for national college football Player of the Week selected by ESPN, according to Brian Dohn, Daily News. The other 3 are Hawaii QB Colt Brennan, Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards and wide receiver Tiquan Edwards of Rutgers. Congrats to Ben for making the list. Read the article to see how you can vote for Ben.
- CBS Sportsline's Dennis Dodd flops again: There aren't many sportscasters these days that have much credibility in this over-hyped era of sports and media, but Dennis Dodd is among the worst journos out there. After calling Ben Howland an "a-hole" and saying he treats his players "like dogs" Dodd came on local radio and changed his tune and said it was all a joke. This past week he picked Stanford to beat UCLA. Now, he changes his tune again and ranks UCLA at #12 in his power rankings (there is still a top 25 game to play today!). From a loss to the worst team in the nation to now top 12. What a tool.
- Rodney Van ok. Rodney Van hurt his ankle in the game Saturday. Brian Dohn is reporting that Van's ankle is ok and he will most likely play this Saturday against BYU.
- BYU has Pac-10's number. BYU handed it to one Pac-10 foe Arizona 20-7, not letting Arizona score until the last minute. We saw parts of that game and not thinking much of Arizona we weren't all that impressed with BYU. Sure, they tore up Oregon in the Vegas Bowl last year, but they lost many senior starters. Chris Foster of the LA Times noted Ben Olson's former BYU history and had this to say, "Olson was trying to head that off at the pass. When asked about his former school, he said, 'I spent a little time there, but it has been such a long time ago, it's just another game.' Olson just flunked Bulletin Board Material 101." Ben's going to have to control those outbursts. Note to Chris: that isn't exactly BB material.
- Bozworths getting attention. It is painfully obvious how much sportscasters want to fawn all over the Bosworths. Its just too easy and juicy a story for them. Korey had a great game with 2 sacks in a backup role to Bruce Davis. We hope that this attention isn't going to cause any unnecessary stress in the locker room. It's totally uncalled for, but you know that is the story the media is going to go after.
Hilarious promotion at Colorado. Normally we don't go for toilet humor at all, but Denver Water came up with this promotion in the image to the right to combat running toilets … obviously for water conservation efforts. They had someone dress up in this toilet suit and run onto the field in the 4th quarter of a tight game between in-State rivals Colorado and Colorado State and had a security guard tackle the "running toilet." The picture says it all. Clever campaign … you're not going to forget it now are you?! In case you're wondering, Colorado won in overtime 31-28.
