About Last Night & Other News
In case you missed it, The Bruin Show radio program that had its inaugural run last night is available to listen to at any time with a click of the mouse. We had some audio problems at the start of the show that we didn’t have in our test run a week ago but they should get worked out by next week’s show. Next week there will be a lot of talk about the Stanford game so if you have take on it get on the air and let the Bruin Nation hear it.
On to the news:
- From the Shooting Fish In A Barrel department (HT to Nestor at BruinsNation): As you may know now, #5 safety Christian Ramirez, a RB in high school, was moved to tailback due to the injuries to Carter, Williams (out for career), and Moline. Dohn reports that Dorrell gave Ramirez the wrong playbook, the Fullback playbook, to study for practice giving Ramirez the impression that he is going to play FB. But when Ramirez got to practice he was put at TB. Ramirez: “I don’t know if (the coaches) were talking to me or Fred, but (the coaches) said just to learn all the fullback stuff,” Ramirez said. “So I went in there and studied all the fullback stuff, and I came out to practice and I was lined up at tailback. I was like, `OK.”
- The first Pre-Season college football BlogPoll, a poll of blog “experts” across the nation, is out. Mgoblog has all the cool details. Note that our poll ballot is in the top 5 of ballots closest to the BlogPoll overall ballot. Shows that we are locked in to the blog universe … or whatever.
- Stanford is running into injury problems as well, as Perelman LAT reports. Vegas oddsmakers have been pricing that into the line, which started at 14 and now is at 16.
- Training Camp ends today. Perelman quotes Dorrell as saying that its been a “really good camp.” Moreover, “We’ve been able to do a lot more early; we’re further ahead (than) we’ve ever been as a team; that’s a good sign.” Really good camp, been able to do a lot more, further ahead than they’ve EVER been. Great signs. No Excuses!!!
- A day after telling the media that he was making injured players and players at new positions unavailable for quotes, Dorrell flip-flops and makes the players available. Maybe the brouhaha that Dorrell caused made him reconsider. Just another oddity of the strangely unfolding season.

You see, when the players are not available and then available, this is part of the HC academy that UCLA has been running for the past 4 years. This is like hitting your head against a wall several times, and then when you stop, boy does that feel good!!!

NY Post college football special today. It has Bruce Davis as college football’s defensive preseason player of year and ucla as #10. Cal is #19. Hysterical Bearwear shlock catalog features as its annual coach modelling clothes none other than Eric Scott. BTW, catalog pushes many 100 NCAA win items. The 1954 football championship is not included among the listed 100.

Jon -
That’s because the 1954 football championship is not part of those 100 championships. No NCAA football championship is. Why? Because according to the NCAA, there is no Division I-A football champion. They don’t count. For anyone.
You other point is cogent, though. I saw the Bear Wear catalogue for this year and about laughed myself to death.

I’m aware. However, any (contrived commercial hype) “100″ list not including football has no validity to me. It is just a way to sell shirts, caps, banners etc. I would trade many of those 100 for a football championship = 1954 method (polls)right now. that’s the way they did it in those days, and believe me it counted for us fans back then as a national championship.
