It Gets Worse: Drugs Found, Accessory Charges Possible
It is now being reported by the LA Times that a “large quantity of narcotics” was found at the scene of Eric Scott’s burglary arrest in addition to the gun mentioned earlier. The Scott arrest is really going to take some time to work itself out. It does not appear that “it’ll go away” as Karl Dorrell said to the media in an informal break out session after Media Day yesterday. To recap, there are now drugs and an abandoned gun involved somehow in the investigation of the alleged burglary by UCLA’s wide receiver’s coach Eric Scott.
And there’s more. Scott’s alleged accomplice Jesus DeAlba admitted to taking things from the house, according to Scott’s own attorney (nice job defending the accomplice). The Times report states that the house was DaAlba’s cousin’s, according to Scott’s attorney, but that his cousin was in the house at first then left … that is when the alleged burglary occurred - after the so-called cousin left. It’s getting a little sordid now and harder to explain away. Even Scott’s attorney could not explain the drugs.
But the drugs and gun are going to ensure that “it’ll (NOT) go away” soon like Dorrell had thought. As the LA Times points out, “a legal source warned the coach remains subject to an accessory charge.” Still, it could emerge that the story of Scott simply sitting in the car while his friend went into his cousin’s house is the true story and Scott will be absolved. We hope that is the case.
Although Dohn is adamant that UCLA did not know of Scott’s priors, it appears that Guerrero and Dorrell knew something:
UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said, “You make judgment calls on everyone you hire. This was a person who had already spent a year in the program as an intern, so you go back and look at a number of factors there.
“Clearly, we knew where he was coming from as a person. Karl felt that he was a person who would help our program. In any program, you’re going to have transgressions.”
Little weak and disappointing response from Guerrero there. But he does put this on Karl. Dorrell would not answer LA Times reporter’s question regarding whether UCLA knew of Scott’s past, but Dorrell said that HE knew about some of Scott’s past (huh?):
UCLA Coach Karl Dorrell has acknowledged that he hired Scott knowing some of his past. “I believe in second chances,” Dorrell said. But when asked whether the university encountered any red flags during the hiring process, he added, “I can’t speculate on that.”
Most likely Dorrell is following HR guidelines of not discussing employee cases. But Karl Dorrell is going to have to at some point come clean with what he knew and when. Nevertheless, it is emerging that Scott’s troubles are far from over and that Dorrell and/or Guerrero will have to do something sooner rather than later about Scott’s tenure with the program. According to his lawyer, Scott apparently is “depressed and anxious.” Expected that his counsel would say that but how could it not be. We hope that he really wasn’t involved in anything and this doesn’t lead to conviction so that he can go on with his life. But we believe he cannot be a coach at UCLA.
