Dump Dorrell

National Signing Day

Today is national signing day, the first day high school seniors can sign their binding letters of intent to attend and play at a school of their choosing. We have verbal commits from 2 of the Rivals.com top 100 players in the country, our highest being rated #68 (Brian Price). By comparison, USC has 9 commits in the top 100, 3 of which are in the top 11 and 7 of which are in the top 50. Several more in the top 100 are seriously considering USC, including the #2 ranked player in the nation.

Dorrell apologists are quick to point out that UCLA is in the top 10 in the country in commits average rating. We have less than a dozen scholarships to give out so excuse us if we point out that’s a red herring. Had there been more scholies to give out Dorrell would loaded the recruiting class with 2 and 3 star players, bringing down that illustrious average being touted on the boards.

Karl Dorrell is being outrecruited … again. 1 5-star recruit! That’s it. What will happen next year when we will have 20+ scholies to dole out … who are we going to restock with? It won’t matter to KD, he has his eyes on something far more important .. the NFL.

joe @ 4:46 pm:

you all forget. UCLA can’t just admit anybody like USC can. Its not that we can recruit, or compete with any other school. Its the fact that we can’t admit them academically, they don’t qualify, have the grades to be accepted.

BillSouthBay @ 5:41 pm:

Joe… Therefore, making it even more imperative that the coaching talent is top drawer. The coach needs to make do with less total talent. The issue as I see it is we have less coach and less total talent, and that is a bad combination…..
Bill

DumpDorrell @ 11:09 pm:

the academic question is another bogus issue. we have athletes that can win, we nearly did many times in our history, even recently. quit giving excuses. it’s repulsive.

Yoyo @ 11:46 pm:

In comparison to the coaching he’s done his recruiting hasn’t been that bad (and you have seen through my comments here that I do not support Dorrell and want him gone). The fact that we are top 10 in average talent rating only makes it more obvious he can’t coach because we are most surely NOT a top 10 team.

Compare UCLA’s class this year with Illinois, a school with little football tradition and no record to speak of, except losing. The overall quality of the star ratings is outstanding…….. Better recruiting skills??

Peter Elliott @ 6:41 pm:

Purely hypothetically…….. What will you think of Dorrell if we win the National Championship next year?

DumpDorrell @ 8:22 pm:

Peter … we have already addressed this several times here and on ESPN and Fox Sports radio. We would shut down this site. That says it all. We have a question for you.  What would you think of Dorrell if he goes 6-6 with 17 returning senior starters, 20 returning starters total, 20 returning seniors, all our tough games at home (except SC)?  If Dorrell can’t win the pac-10 with next year’s team and schedule do you think he ever can?

Fox 71 @ 12:20 pm:

Peter - your hypothetical is meaningless, as is DD’s reply. Before you could gloat or DD could shut down the website, the world would be spinning out of its orbit and hell would be freezing over. But I wouldn’t care, because I would have been plucked from retirement to become the starting QB to lead the Bruins to this national championship.

Try a different hypothetical. Such as, “Would you call for Coach Dorrell’s dismissal if he has a season that causes no embarrassment?” (That’s as much why I want him gone as anything - it’s embarrassing watching him and the team in so many cases.)

BillSouthBay @ 6:32 pm:

ALERT!!! The coaches at the NCAA meeting have recommended instituting a play clock, after time outs, of 15 seconds vs. the current 25 seconds. UCLA will be called for delay of game many times, I predict, if this rule goes into effect. We need to petition the NCAA immediately to halt this potentially disastrous rule. With the time we use now on the sidelines, and the confusion over formations/plays/personnel, games will be at risk!!

DumpDorrell @ 8:00 pm:

huh?! Seriously? Do you have a link to this rule? If this is true you are right. We have a new OC, a new OL, and a coach that is not accustomed to getting plays in on time, nor handling his timeouts well. Not good for Dorrell.

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=ap-rulechanges&prov=ap&type=lgns. It will be a awful change for the Blue and Gold next year, just when we thought we might win 6-7 games all season…..
