Detroit OC Mike Martz Holding Up Colletto Hire

Tom Kowalksi of Michigane Live believes the holdup on hiring an OL coach for the Detroit Lions is the uncertainty surrounding OC Mike Martz. Martz has his eyes on the Dallas Cowboys head coaching position and may be interviewing for it, though there are no confirmations that we can find. In any case, that possibility is preventing the Lions from closing the deal on any OL coach, including the hiring of our OL coach Jim Colletto.

That is more plausible than Dorrell’s public comments on the matter. Dorrell basically said that Colletto is having a hard time deciding between going back to the NFL and staying with UCLA under new OC Training Jay Norvell. More likely that Dorrell gave Colletto time to look for a new job and told Training Jay to help him look for his OL coach but we won’t announce any new OL coach until Colletto is set up. Dorrell most likely is either interviewing OL coaches or already has one in mind.

Lonnie White of the LAT reports that “several NFL teams” have contacted Colletto. This makes it more likely that Colletto is gone.

Signing day is Feb. 1. It would be helpful if the coaching staff were set. Since this year we have very few scholies to give out its hardly that big of an issue. Most of our scholies are called for. More on that later.
