Dump Dorrell

Cable 2: Tom Cable Back As OC??

The possibility of Cable 2, of Tom Cable coming back as OC, appears good. Pretty fortunate for Dorrell if it happens. Cable obviously knows the offense and most of the players, and they know him. It’s an easy transition for everyone, and Cable had some success here even with Dorrell. Cable 2 is the logical choice here and we like this pickup … our brilliant evil plan to rule the football universe may work with him. But lets be realistic about a couple of things: Cable is not a guru like some Dorrellistas are making him out to be, second comings don’t always turn out as hot as they are expected to be, and Cable will bolt (again) after next season … just like Walker will (unless he is offered Dorrell’s job which would be a mistake). And the deal is not done yet.

Cable 1 did vastly improve the offense after Axman turned in one of the worst performances in UCLA history. He did have the benefit of 3 play-makers who bailed him out at the end of games in ‘05. They boosted offensive production numbers to elite levels because of the ground they had to cover to come back. How would Cable have done THIS year??! He bolted when he saw what was coming, just like he will bolt again when in ‘08 we lose nearly the entire starting team. Leaves a big question mark on his record.

What can Cable 2 do with the offense we have now? With no play-makers (except maybe Southpaw Jesus, who has no standout receivers), no big time OL, no big time RB, no big time WRs. He would have the benefit of a defensive unit with 10 returning starters that would keep the offense in games. That is a plus. But will this group of offensive players be able to get it done at the end, when it counts, like Olson, Lewis and MJD for Cable 1? Will we have a kicker that can put points on the board when we stall in the red zone or need that game winner? It’s great if you can open up the offense, but without the players to do it it’s hard to predict how good Cable really will be.

On a side note, could it be that Dorrell owes Ty Willingham a big thank you for this bit of good fortune? Tom Cable is unemployed because Ty is stinking up the Northwest. Jim Mora, recently fired coach of the Atlanta Falcons, felt comfortable enough with the heat Ty was feeling that he made that stupid comment about wanting his job … hence the firing. Tom Cable was sent packing with him. Thank you Ty, now just don’t make Karl look so bad next time we play you at the Rose Bowl.
