Dorrell On Offense: “Open To Ideas” (He Is Feeling The Heat!)

With the Svoboda firing, Karl Dorrell said that when it comes to the offense he is “open to ideas.” He might be taking over offensive duties himself OR he might hire someone. And if he hires a new OC, his 4th in 5 years, Dorrell said he may hire someone without a background in the much criticized West Coast Offense. What this tells us is this: Dorrell is feeling the heat! Dan Guerrero MUST have told KD that he has to do something about the offense. How else can one explain that Dorrell is prepared to ABANDON the only offense he knows?!! Not a good sign for KD at all. Great for UCLA fans though. The end of the Dorrell era is near!!

For those who aren’t familiar with the reasoning, here it is.  ‘07 is critical for Dorrell, for his dreams of coaching in the NFL and his coaching reputation period. If he fails to win the Pac-10 stacked as the team is with 17 returning senior starters, 20 returning starters total, and with most tough games at home he will certainly not win it in ‘08 with 17 starters gone and tough games on the road. 5 years of not winning the conference or going to a bcs bowl game puts KD on the hot seat with DG, and 6 years (after ‘08) will automatically get him fired, pretty much ending his NFL dreams right there and possibly his head coaching career.  If KD has 9 wins in ‘07 he still won’t win the conference but he may get hired by some stupid (Wayno, Davis) NFL owner anyway. The fact that KD is considering abandoning the offense he knows tells us he is fealing the heat.

I cannot understand why the alumni puts up with this !

KD has given UCLA a bad reputation in football.

It has cost the school a lot of money in lost revenue.

Good players will not commit to a school with this sort of win/loss record.

UCLA’s football program does NOT include a training program for coaches !

no WCO? good. if he hires an OC with another offensive scheme then you have to ask, do we have the right players to run it. one would think that Dorrell recruited players for the WCO. if we are playing a spread next season with a new OC then we will not have the players specifically for it. also, the players will have to learn new plays. the only way out for Dorrell imo is to hire a new OC that plays a modified WCO for college. if he takes over as OC or brings in an OC that has a different offense, we will be in trouble.

Seems to me that we already are in trouble.

Very good points about the WCO vs. anything else. If KD scraps the WCO, then someone in the administration must have told him that he is in for a long time, since he will have to recruit, again, for the offense he chooses, suffering along the way (you know, we have to “learn” a new offense and “grow” into it). It makes absolutely no sense for him to change offenses this late in “his game”.
We said before that he will survive or not based on what SPJ does. Then he benches him after an injury and he declaration that an injury should not take someone out of the lineup….. it goes on and on.
