It’s January: Who Will Dorrell Fire, Who Will Dorrell Scapegoat?
It’s another January and it’s that time again for Dorrell to look for scapegoats. He usually fires assistants at this point in the year, usually in the next couple of weeks. It’s obvious where the firings are going to come from this year … the offensive side of the ball.
Jim Svoboda has basically given up his job already, having to disappear from sight since the Cal game when Karl Dorrell took all the credit for an outbreak in offensive yardage against the 92nd ranked defense in the country. There was jubilation in the loss because Karl called 25% of the offensive plays. Most of our scoring and yardage came in garbage time in the 4th quarter but the beat press went gaga despite the big loss. So, Svoboda is out after only 1 year as OC (where are the Dorrellistas to argue for giving this guy time?). Look for an announcement in the next couple of weeks. Too bad Dorrell is able to do easily and without criticism what Dan Guerrero can’t do.
The next to get the ax will be OL coach Jim Colletto, again after his 1st year. We have no inside knowledge of this but it would have to be since the OL performed well below expectations this year. Colletto has been fired from nearly every job he’s had and he is partly responsible for the early problems Ben Olson had. He has been saved somewhat by the scrambling ability of Pat Cowan. But our rushing hasn’t been altogether impressive behind the OL play and the penalties racked up by the OL have to be near the tops in the nation. So, Colletto looks gone. There should be more on the offense, but we will stop at the obvious choices.
There might be a surprise or two on the defensive side of the ball as well. After having his name thrown around head coaching jobs and ESPN top 10 plays, DeWayne Walker was taken down a step or two with the embarrassing performance we had against FSU in the Emerald Bowl - against a guy who was FIRED prior to the game by his own father. Given the precedent Karl Dorrell sets, it would come as no surprise if Walker looks for a scapegoat too. Any coaches involved with the secondary could get booted. The next few weeks should be interesting.
